First of all, the station itself is really cool. It's tucked up near some beautiful hills and the trees surrounding the picnic area provide lovely shade and make it a picturesque place to kill a little time. Inside, there is a little waiting room with super cool art and signage, and in the back there is a cozy pub with a great beer selection and even a food menu. They have WiFi that they freely share, and that afternoon there was a guitarist playing mellow tunes while folks just hung out. I'm not sure how I got so lucky to find such a gem of a place to post up; I spent much of the time marveling at my good fortune (and drinking a tasty beer). As cool as the station is, the real find was the people who staff and patronize it. You couldn't ask for a more welcoming or warm group of humans. As soon as I asked the station master about alternative modes of transit, my plight made the rounds. Before I knew it I had complete strangers offering me rides to various points so I could meet up with my friend. And while that at first might sound a little sketch, I can honestly say that it was just well-intentioned kindness. There is a palpable sense of community that permeates the entire place, and one can't help but soak it up. I ended up accepting a ride from a lovely gentleman who was on his way north with his college-aged daughter. What could have been a stressful travel delay actually ended up being an unexpected but wonderful mini adventure, and I managed to discover a magical little realm in a small train station seemingly in the middle of nowhere. Lessons (less learned than) reiterated and reinforced: the journey is just as important as the destination, accept the kindness of strangers and then turn around and offer it to others, and when possible, stop and have a beer and a chat at the Amtrak Lamy Station.

Clean restrooms and the volunteers help you with your luggage. Nice folks. Historical building and there is even a brewery in one end of the building. Pretty new and since I don't drink I didn't try their brews but pretty impressive they have such a facility in a one horse town. The picnic area outside, under the shad trees, was quite nice and we had our lunch out there. Great experience.

I waited here for the rail runner train to Albuquerque, which arrived perfectly on time, and was painless to figure out even for a visitor like me. You just wait based on the schedule, it shows up, and you can buy your ticket online or on-board. You can also buy a day pass, which is worth it if you plan to ride more than one way, a significant savings. This stop has a large parking lot for commuters, and bike lockers for those who routinely would bike to and/or from the stop. It's right in the heart of the downtown area of Santa Fe, and there are plenty of places to eat, drink, and shop nearby while you wait. For me, it was an excellent junction point for my trip. Served it's purpose, this public transit is GREAT, and the ABQ/Santa Fe area is lucky to have it.

Driving over to the station off of US 550 road we relatively easy. Once you got within a block of the station, there was a sign showing you where to turn. The entrance is off the main road and behind a few buildings so it can be a little tricky, hence my 4/5 rating. Once at the station, there is covered parking for most of the lot. It's a simple 5 minute walk to the train platform. The train was on time and we had a great trip up. It was nice to see the scenery that you usually don't get to see from I-25. Also, we saved some money on gas and wear and tear on our vehicle. Overall, the station made it easy for us to have our day trip without having to go downtown to the main train station and deal with larger crowds. I definitely recommend!

He charged us $40 per person!!! $120 total for a trip into town that Uber or Lyft does for $19-$39! AND he spent the whole trip telling us that he was doing us a favor! My husband gave him the physical address of the hotel we were staying at, but he drove in the opposite direction downtown and then claimed he had another fare, and since he did us a favor by driving us without a reservation, he was dropping us off MILES from our hotel and that he'd come back 30 minutes later to get us! He claimed that "every hotel in Santa Fe is the Santa Fe something-or-other" and that we told him the WRONG HOTEL. WE DID NOT! We booked an Uber out here for our return trip for $19 TOTAL. Buses in Santa Fe suffer from lack of funding and an apathetic public, who supposedly care about…read morethe climate but who drive doggedly no matter how awful the traffic or foul the air. The best way to illustrate the problem is to point out that Santa Fe Airport is an international airport, but none of the Santa Fe Trails bus routes go there--at all, ever. You see gloriously happy people hiking and biking on the wonderful walking trails, but when it comes to grocery shopping, appointments, school, work, etc. the middle class simply gets in their car and drives. If you live near Route 4, which is reliable and useful, you are fine. But most of the city of Santa Fe is simply inaccessible by public transportation, and they do not care.

The air in Santa Fe is fabulous and one a 2 seated open air, human powered tricycle this is the only way to go. I stopped by one and struck up a conversation with 71 year old peddle/driver, Pete, by asking if Pedicab was hiring. Great guy, originally from the NYC area and transplanted to Santa Fe only one years ago. His knowledge of the area, rich history, and it's people was most impressive. We talked for roughly 20 minutes and his vim and vigor for life, health, and continued gathering of knowledge was inspiring. Imagine, 71, yes a former biker & runner, but able to a 21 geared tricycle with as much as 350-600 pounds of cargo is jaw dropping. Remember, when you accept a ride, please, generously tip these bubbly tourist driven enthusiasts.

Once I checked out of my hotel, I needed to kill some time before I got on the Rail Runner train. I had seen a colorful Pedicab earlier when I took the city tour and it looked like fun. So after that tour and a visit to the Crepes Shop nearby, I was feeling pretty good but not like I wanted to hike all the way down to the Santa Fe Depot for the train. That's when I saw a blond guy sitting in a Pedicab parked in Santa Fe Plaza. I asked him how much he charged and it was one dollar per minute, That seemed affordable so I hopped on. Soon we were passing through the beautiful Plaza and on our way through the Railyard District. It was so nice taking in all the sights from an open air carriage. The driver was nice enough to stop while I admired and took pictures of a church with a lovely rose garden. Soon enough, we had arrived at the Depot and the ride was only $12. The driver had used his little step stool to help me get down and forget to take it when he left. So I called the Pedicab office and told them I was leaving his step stool with the Tourist Info office there. The gentleman did come back to fetch his step stool. This company does an excellent job, hire wholesome, honest-looking drivers and give visitors a fresh air way of enjoying the sights. According to their website, they also do "tours of Canyon Road Galleries (many of the drivers are artists), the Railyard District, and tours of nightlife hotspots (some of the drivers specialize in nightlife). Tours can be of any length you choose." Santa Fe Pedicab operates from 9 am to 10 pm seven days a week from May to November. Call for a reservation or ask your concierge to make arrangements. Usually there is a Pedicab somewhere around the Plaza area, which is where I found mine. 5 YELP STARS for environmentally-friendly pedal power in beautiful Santa Fe.

When Los Alamos County decided to start taxing the Atomic Energy Lab that is based within their…read morejurisdiction, a whole bunch of new tax revenue was suddenly sitting prettily in their city coffers. Which is why the Atomic City Transit is such a nice bus line. While visiting Bandalier National Monument and enjoying lunch in the picnic area, I noticed these colorful buses that appeared regularly in the parking lot. They were the Atomic City Transit buses, which operate from 6:00 a.m. - 7:00 p.m. Monday - Friday except for holidays. It is important to know that during the summer months, you cannot drive into the park between 9 and 3. The reason for the shuttle is that a fire and subsequent flooding in the area made this necessary. It's only a 20 minute ride on theshuttle bus. The free shuttle runs from White Rock Visitor Center, about 8 miles from the park entrance. It runs every 20-30 minutes. If you're hiking a distance, you can drive into the park before 9 am and park at the lot by the visitor center. There is a $12 fee. When I tiptoed down to feel the water in Frijoles Creek, (freezing!) I stopped to admire a bus that was on a scheduled break. The Los Alamos buses are clean and neat. They do not look like any of the hard core buses you see in large urban areas. Even better, ACT actually brings you to the local Airport at your request! According to the ACT website, "ACT Route 2 serves the airport (LAM) upon request. Riders should advise the Route 2 driver of airport terminal building destination when boarding the bus. Riders should call 661-RIDE (7433) to request a Route 2 pick-up at the airport terminal building." Imagine that! Calling your city bus to come get you at the airport or drop you off at your request! Even better--ACT has an ACTracker which links to the bus line's real time route information site. Click on this link from any computer or mobile device for route maps and estimated arrival times. You can also create an account and sign up for service updates. Yes, this is a great transportation system! 5 YELP STARS!
