First time and I'm impressed. If you're looking for bar pub pizza, this is similar to Lynwoods. In my opinion, the pizza is similar in price and size; however, the crust is the key. Lynwood's is more like a pie crust- more dense and crisper than Amvets which is similar to bread dough. I prefer Lynwood's simply on that point. However, Amvets is better for atmosphere. Great bar and it has live music. Also takes credit unlike Lynwood's. read more

True Score: 4.5 Stars A VFW that serves great bar pies. Oh AmVets, cheap drinks and a lively crowd. A big bar with the decor from 1988. Now for the most important part, the bar pizza. Of all joints on the supposed "South Shore" this is probably the most underrated. My favorite part is that they always cook the pizza correctly, crispy. Great fresh toppings and fresh dough cooked to order. You do have the order the pizza at the counter not the bar. I would give AmVets #3 on my grand bar pie rating list. If you know all of the great spots out there that means it's pretty damn good. Throw down a couple of hard drinks while you wolf down the pizza and you have a big winner. We were here on a Sunday afternoon- bar was crowded, but there were plenty of tables with TV views for the football fans out there. We did secure two seats together at the bar after a person was nice enough to move. The crowd wasn't overly friendly, but warmed up to us as our time there wore on. The bartender brought out cheese, pepperoni/salami and crackers to offer to the bar patrons- which was a bonus. Everything is cash only- so hit the ATM prior. The beers were mainly your usual suspects, but they had a few local craft beers- at GREAT prices. The pizzas (or food) are ordered from a window, but they give you a number- and bring it to you when it's done. I got extra chez and my husband got the Hot Hawaiian. We traded one pieces so I could try. My pizza was delicious and his was hot, but the flavors together worked really well. He enjoyed it and I was glad I tried it, but 1 or maybe 2 pieces is all I could handle. AmVets will certainly be in the rotation. read more

AmVets is a good place for cheap beers and live music. The building is old and dumpy, but they do have a decent outdoor area. Hoey's is the Pizza Place that operates out of the AmVets. Dennis (the Owner) is a really good guy! Unfortunately, the staff has gone downhill over the years, and so has the Pizza. They're still better than a lot of places, but not as good as they were. read more

Delicious pizza. Got the bean special and a hamburger and onion. I was shocked when they said it was $30. I am taking off a star because of the pricing. None of the menus online reflect the latest pricing and the bean special was $12 and is now $16. I walked out thinking I was over charged but after searching the web I found a photo with current prices. People don't seem to mind as they were walking out with stacks of pizza but I thought that was sticker shock! The hamburger pizza was bland but I loved the bean special. read more

You'll probably come to Hoey's for the Pizza. There is a wide variety of Bar Pies to Choose from. We had a Buffalo Chicken, a Potato & Bacon and a Hamburg & Onion. Unlike other reviewers I didn't find the Pizza greasy. All the crusts were crispy & chewy and the ingredients were tasty. Add some Pepper to the Irish Pie as it was a little bland. Greek Salad was a happy surprise. Packed with the standards but with the welcomed addition of Celery & Carrots in the mix, this Salad was a real gem. The environment was unique. An Amvets Post with a great cast of characters. A large room with some dated furnishings but everything was clean & comfortable. A 16 oz Be Hoppy and a Kahlua & Milk only set me back $8 combined. Great pizza. Really, better than Town Spa and Linwood. Old school, cash, bar sized pizza; thin crust. Parking is a mess, be careful if you park on the street or you'll get a ticket. Personally, I'd call in an order 90 minutes in advance and drive over and have some one run in and pay. read more

Man, their recipe's a winner! I haven't had a pie like this since I was a kid, growing up in NY State! Most of the others I've tried, since relocating to MA in 1998, have tasted like they came from the frozen foods cases at Shaw's, but not this! Take a second and say hey to the big dude with the bald head and beard. I think he's the owners son. He's a good guy and will treat you well. We used to go to Christo's in Brockton for the best bar pizza...but no longer! My husband's work hosts many gatherings each year, here, just to have fun. I went with him once and...O.....M....G. Best Bar Pizza EVER! Worth the wait! The bartender, while a Dolly Parton throw-back, is heavy handed, and is willing to send the kitchen a round if you're willing to buy it. Simply the best. The Burner, Meatlover's, and Buffalo Chix are standouts, but you really can't go wrong. read more

As long as you like toppings the pizza is delicious. Unfortunately, I screwed up and ordered a cheese pizza, BIG MISTAKE! The person that I was with ordered the buffalo chicken pizza, and somehow I conned him into trading half of my cheese for half of his buffalo chicken, SCORE! The buffalo chicken pizza was awesome. I can't wait to come back and try more pizza. Although, I cannot choose Amvet's over Lynwood's(yet), but they definitely give them a good run for their money. We visited Hoeys Pizza / Randolph Amvets a few times. It was quite an experience. You order your pizza from a little window in the entryway. Then you can find a table in the bar area / function hall. Somehow, when your pizza is ready, the Hoey Pizza guys find you to deliver the pizza. I was doubtful, but they found us. While the pizza is ordered via window service, Amvets does have roving waitresses who take drink orders. Or you can walk up to the bar yourself and get drinks that way. Depending on how busy the place is, the waitstaff service can be hit or miss. The first time we visited there was a band playing and people were dancing. It was definitely a mixed crowd in terms of ages, styles, personalities etc. I had a great time. Hoey's pizza is excellent. I think it's as good as any bar pizza around. I plan on returning. read more

Usually order Amvets a couple times a month and are pretty systematic on what we order for pizza Cheese, sausage, Pepperoni... never got a pizza that we didn't like!! Always AWESOME, Hot and SUPER TASTY!!! This place can be a bit hard to get to if you don't know the area and there is plenty of parking!!! There are no adjectives good enough to describe this pizza. It is the best I have ever had in my whole life. I was back home again last week and it was literally our FIRST stop. We were all foaming at the mouth eating it. UNREAL. While Lynwood is a townie favorite it's not this townie's favorite... The Amvets has a much larger selection of barroom pizzas so there is something for everyone. I can't say I have had them all but the ones I've had (which is a lot) hit the spot. The family favorites are the pesto chicken and the hawaiian. The price is a little high but if you give the Amvets a chance and you will not be disappointed. read more

Yes, I rate this 5 stars as I did with the Lynnwood Cafe. I'm also a member of the Post. As commented by others, the menu offers many more choices than the Lynnwood. It also offers fresh custom-made salads and calzone. The bar also has a friolator that can make chicken wings, fingers, FF's or onion rings. An excellent choice for a cheap night out. Live bands every Fri/Sat nights, and a C&W band on Wednesdays, that turns into an open mike session after an hour. It can get noisy, but well policed by the bartender and staff. read more
