I really really wanted to like Amy. I just moved to NYC and booked an appointment with her after reading all the positive reviews on Yelp and was so excited for my hair appointment. I waited over 2 weeks to get an appointment. I think she was OK. Not bad by any means, but just OK. My huge problem was - She definitely showed signs of impatience when I asked her opinion multiple times. This is what I don't get -- Aren't hairdressers used to clients asking for opinions more than once? I was a little indecisive - by no means excessive, but she clearly showed signs of impatience and told me that I shouldn't expect to look any different if I wanted to keep my length. So I asked her what kind of cut would she recommend if I didn't care about keeping the length - and she came up with the exact same recommendation she did when I said I DID want to keep the length. So, basically, she didn't have a new idea and just wanted to pin it on me. I wasn't a 100% satisfied with the cut, and she knew it too. I definitely liked the haircut, it wasn't bad, it was just meh. I think she is a nice enough person to chat with, but she wasn't great as a hairdesser. I think one of the most important qualities in a hairdresser is patience coz no one wants to end up looking hideous if they go out on a limb, and hairdressers play an important role in talking you through it. I sort of forced myself to say I loved it coz she was showing signs of irritation and I just didn't want to walk out in an off-mood. I found her through luck and someone mentioning her name and Yelp and she took me in last minute for an up do and makeup for an important event. She listened to me, she was very open to my vision but also very willing to use her own and make it happen. When I moved to NYC 5 years ago, I had a helluva time finding a stylist I liked. After many, many failed attempts with stylists around the city, I got lucky and found Amy. It's not easy to find a stylist who can give a killer short haircut. Amy is so precise and patient. My hair looks great for a lot longer than any other stylist I've ever had. She's always coming up with new ideas for how I can do my style and color. Although I love her original creation so much that the most she's been able to do is talk me into a "longer short hairstyle" ;) And because I'm platinum (natural, of course ;) ), my hair can easily get damaged over time. Amy was incredible! I called her on a referral from a friend less than 3 weeks before my wedding as this was the ONE thing I just could not get my act together on re: planning (and had had a BAD hair trial from someone else... I looked like Martha Washington.... for real!). Just my luck, Amy was available and able to fit me in for a trial before the wedding as well! I met her at her adorable studio on the UWS and we talked about what I was looking for - wasn't sure if I wanted my hair up or down (actually knew I wanted to wear it down but my hair is NOT weather or humidity proof by any stretch and we were having nasty, humid, rainy weather at the time). She suggested we go with an up-do for the time being and then I could always decide day of. Immediately, she went to work. Within an hour, I had a FAB up-do. My biggest issue HAD NOTHING TO DO WITH AMY'S WORK, I just really wanted to wear my hair down. So day of, by the grace of something, we had decent weather (a rainbow in fact after some showers) and Amy did my hair in curls down but away from my face. I L-O-V-E-D it! It was everything I wanted and more... She also did my mom's hair without a trial beforehand as my mom lives out-of-town and her hair looked to die for! Truly a pleasure to work with Amy. Would recommend her for ANYONE looking for a savvy stylist who is sweet and funny and does great hair no matter your hair or weather situation. Excellent experience....nice quiet, relaxed atmosphere. Amy is a wonderful hair stylist. She knows hair, gives advice, and styles/cuts to suit the needs of the client and the hair on the client's head. My hair not only looked good after the appointment but it felt soft and healthy....not an easy feat with frizzy, curly hair on a day with 100% humidity. I have yet to try Amy out as a colorist but will surely do that the next time I return to NYC. Amy has been cutting my hair for a few years, now. She's the only stylist I trust completely. I could literally fall asleep while she cuts my hair and be completely confident that I would wake up and have a great haircut. Amy is very responsive to all the quirks in my hair. She's very good with wavy hair. She's taught me how to style it and she's shown which product works best to maintain a style throughout the day. She's helped me work with all those little imperfections in my hair so that it always comes out looking good. In addition to her abilities as a stylist, Amy is simply wonderful to me. Sometimes my schedule is hectic and she's always flexible with her time. She's got a very calming energy. I have been going to Amy for years! She is the absolute best when it comes to coloring. I don't know how she does it. She truly listens to what my expectations are, provides guidance and always delivers beautiful, natural highlights. I recently moved outside the city and decided to try a new colorist in my area. I got a million compliments from my guests on my hair and makeup. Amy is fantastic! This was the first time I had a hair cut in new york since I moved here from Boston. I asked for an appointment on such short notice and she was able to fit me in at 8:30 am even though she was completely booked that day! When I walked into her studio I found her place beautiful, clean and she was very welcoming and friendly. When I went there, I had incredibly LONG flat boring hair and I showed her some old photos of some short hair cuts that I had in the past. We talked about what I wanted (which was a short fun kinda spunky hair cut with a length that was somewhere in between the photos I had shown her). She listened to everything I said and was able to give me the cut I wanted. She's very talented and knows how to cut hair in order to flatter someone's face shape. Went to Amy for my wedding makeup. After looking for someone that did good job (at a reasonable price) I came across her name I was a bit nervous because most of her reviews were based on hair, but she was great! Would definitely recommend and go back again when I need makeup done! Despite my not-too friendly reply to one of her emails ( I misunderstood something she said and was very embarrassed afterwards) she was extremely professional, put if behind us and did an awesome job with my makeup. After 35 years in LA I came home to NY. When I moved I was still trimming my own, never processed hair. Jacki took me from '60s hippy straight to '70s perm, to 80's spiral perm, to soft straight high lighted hair. In NY I went to a highly rated place for highlights and flew back to LA the following week for Jacki to figure out how to minimize the bleach damage done to my baby fine hair. And budgeted flying back to LA for hair care for next two years . Then I discovered Amy Gerber. Amy is the best. I needed a new stylist on the UWS and found Amy on Yelp. Her reviews were fantastic so thought I would give her a shot. With only a couple of days before I had to leave town for the holidays, I thought it would be a long shot, but she gave me an appointment on a Saturday night! I also came to find out she works late on week nights - perfect for someone like me with an insane work schedule. I didn't quite know what to expect given the location of her salon in her brownstone apartment. But it has all the equipment you would expect a salon to have, in a very charming setting. Amy impressed me right away with her diagnosis of what had been done to my hair. She noticed things I had completely forgotten I had done. Clearly an expert of her trade. She took the time to talk through my options and went to work. In the end I got a single process on my roots and natural highlights around my face, plus an expert cut - exactly what I asked for. She uses good products and really cares about the health of your hair - even went the extra step of putting oil on my ends while my color processed and adding oil to the bleach used for my highlights for extra nourishing. She is also just a really sweet person. I enjoyed getting to know her over the 3 hours she spent with me. i would also add her prices are very reasonable. I am someone who is very particular about my hair so am so relieved to have found Amy. I will definitely be back and will refer my friends. read more

Totally worth it! Amy is amazing and I am extremely grateful! I went to her after I had a disastrous experience in Washington Heights. I have very dark hair and wanted my hair to look slightly lighter with soft brown highlights for a natural look. I was given uneven, blonde chunky highlights that created a sharp contrast with my dark hair and looked as if they were done by someone who had no idea how to do highlights. Amy is a color genius. I went to her for a color correction after receiving a terrible dye job at a different salon, which resulted in my having maroon-colored hair. Amy sat with me and looked at the nearly dozen photos I brought her of colors I liked. After several clarifying questions, she figured out the color and tone I was really looking for, and got to work. Some highlights, lowlights and a little toner later, and my hair is exactly what I was envisioning (no easy feat, given what Amy had to start with). read more

I was a client of Amy's for single process color for a couple of years, and she is in general a very good colorist--but if that was all it takes, I would have given her four or five stars. Our immediate reason for separating was because my hair is changing (likely from hormonal changes) and this time she did a terrible job on it--it was extremely brassy (brunette) two weeks after she colored it. When I asked her to correct her mistake, she re-colored it and afterward (with no advance notice) presented me with a bill for $80. When I told her that it was her job as colorist to look at and understand my hair and color it so as not to be brassy whatever condition it's in, she said it wasn't her fault my hair was changing and fired me, ie told me not to return. I should add that when she corrected it, she did a great job, which says to me that the brassiness was truly her error--i.e., she knew how to do it right. I have never had a colorist who tried to charge me to correct her/his mistake. This terrible experience prompted me to write this review, and I'll be comprehensive. Over the time I was with her, I noticed that she doesn't dialog about what she's going to do. She'd often charge different amounts each time I went. I didn't understand why and would have to ask. One time she charged $20 extra to dye my eyebrows when coloring my hair. If you have single process done you probably already know that absolutely NO ONE charges a penny for that--but even in eyebrow salons, coloring eyebrows is far less than $20. She doesn't itemize or disclose what she is charging for when she collects money. I did not like her haircuts at all--in my opinion she's a poor stylist as far as cutting. When you book you have to be very specific as she tends to book for haircuts automatically without asking, and I simply did not want her to cut my hair at all, ever. When coloring, she may or may not put a toner in--you have to ask to establish this. I had highlights done at another salon and she covered them without telling me she was going to do so. In short, she's not a great communicator concerning your hair. I never loved her personality either, but that is so NOT RELEVANT to hair--if someone is good, you go. And she is indeed a very good colorist, but if she screws up she will not stand behind her work, or at least she did not do so for me. read more

Amy was absolutely brilliant. I travelled to NYC for my wedding in Central Park so had no opportunity before the wedding to have a hair and make up trial. I showed Amy my dress and some pictures of various hairstyles I thought might look good but had no real clue as to what would suit me or make the most of my dress. Amy was fantastic, she used her obvious experience and talent to create a truly amazing look. She created a stunning 'up do' on my normal fine and limp hair that lasted the entire day .... incredible!
