I visited Badmaash with a friend on a weekday night. Parking was fairly easy to find around the corner, though walking around at night might feel a little sketchy. We had their Chicken Tikka and Butter Chicken with Basmati Rice and Naan. For starters, the food was amazing, and the service, too, was amazing. Both easily ranked at the top of what I've had. The pricing, however, is definitely steeper. Most Indian food spots serve complimentary naan or have rice included or at a small surcharge. Here, however, it's like $6... each. And this is on top of a price that is already above average. Outside of the nickel-and-dime pricing, the ambiance was nice and quiet. My wife ordered the Daal Makhani bowl (24-hour slow-cooked lentils and kidney beans, ginger, garlic and plum tomato). Both bowls had substantial amounts of food and were flavorful, filling, and freshly made with fresh ingredients. An absolutely delightful experience! I was a bit nervous after reading some of the reviews, but we left with both our hearts and stomachs completely satisfied. Even my 17-year-old, who usually only prefers homemade Indian food loved it. Here's what we ordered and my thoughts: Papri chaat - The papris was out of this world, with the perfect crunch and a rich, buttery flavor. The chutneys, potatoes, and chickpeas complemented it beautifully. The only small downside was that there could've been a little less yogurt. The sweetness level of the yogurt was just right, but it slightly overpowered the dish. Maybe a thicker drizzle of yogurt would balance it even better. Tandoori wings - Yum, yum, yum! They were perfectly seasoned, spiced and not dry at all. A couple of pieces were slightly overdone, but we didn't have time to think about it because they were so enjoyable overall. Everyone at the table loved them. And a special mention for the cilantro whipped cream, oh my what an unexpected concept! The flavor was a solid 10/10. The texture took a moment to get used to, but once I did, I couldn't stop eating it. Onion bhajjis - We ended up ordering these twice, which says it all! My son couldn't stop eating them. He's never even had pakoras before so these were an absolute hit!!! Chicken tikka masala - The best I've had in a long time. great balance of tangy and spicy flavors without being creamy. Generous portions of chicken and it was tender. I could've happily kept dipping my naan in the sauce all night long. Naan were alright! Slightly flat and overdone, but great with the sauce. Chai - we loved it so much we ended up having 3 cups each! Perfectly spiced and just the right amount of sweetness. Poutine - A bit underwhelming overall, but the masala potatoes were delicious. Honestly, I might have enjoyed it more without the gravy and chicken. Seekh kebabs - kebabs were tasty, but the sauce didn't quite work for me, it was salty, thick and didn't complement the already rich kebabs. I would've preferred them with sweet and green chutneys and maybe a pinch of chaat masala on top. Parle-G & malai kulfi - More than a perfect ending to a big meal. We did not know about the rule at the time and a polite explanation would've been nice, but the interaction left us feeling embarrassed and uncomfortable. He hardly spoke to us after that and we felt unwelcome for the rest of the visit. A 20% large party fee was added even though there were only 2 of us. First meal in LA...could have been five stars, but there were so many own goals that spoiled the experience. We had just come from a fantastic visit at The Broad and were in great spirits when we arrived hungry and ready to dig in. We were the first reservation of the night, and there were also a couple other tables coming in around the same time, and how many folks were on the floor? ONE. Yes, a single human being doing everything: greeting, seating, menus, ordering, bar, etc. Insane! The poor guy was frantic, and while he did a great job considering the situation, what terrible awful management. Are you seriously that cheap and willing to sacrifice customer satisfaction?? The one-person staff meant that you couldn't order a cocktail until 6:00 pm, "when the bar arrives" (!!), so there went that revenue. When the bar guy showed up early for his shift 30 minutes later, we were told that we *could* get our drink, but were then told 15 minutes after that, once he had set up his station, that they didn't have the ingredients to make the drinks! What a JOKE. At that point, 45 minutes into the meal, we had almost all our dishes on the table and no drinks. Unreal. It's a real shame about the aforementioned fouls because the food here is pretty incredible. We loved almost every dish that we ordered. The samosas (chicken tikka and potato) were crispy and flavorful. The pickled veggies were a nice acidic palate cleanser, and the cucumber raita went well with everything in that regard as well. It's ridiculous that rice isn't served with the mains you order (hate this money grab), but we're glad that we had some--as well as the rosemary naan--for the lamb sausage dish, which we would have ended up licking with our fingers it was so good. The only dish that fell flat was the chana masala...way too watery. For dessert, we shared the cutie ice cream sandwiches that weren't exactly smart (all the ice cream smooshed out of the side of the hard cookies) but tasted great. So, we're landing on three stars because of the ridiculous staffing decisions here that tell the customer: we could care less about your experience. It's a real shame. Hopefully others will have a better time if management pulls it together. read more

I wouldn't say it blew me away, but it was solid. If you're craving something hearty, it'll hit the spot. Onion Bhaji - These were the MVPs of the night. Super crispy, perfectly spiced, and the sauces they came with? Obsessed. I kept dipping them in everything. That sweet tamarind chutney and herby green sauce were both amazing. I was actually really excited to try this spot after hearing really good reviews and it being very popular. Unfortunately I do believe the service was really slow and although the food came out fast we felt rushed to order and then neglected when trying to leave. The food while unique didn't really feel as fusion as I had hoped. The flavors were balanced but didn't keep a majority of the culture that supposedly inspired these dishes. We had the Samosas (3/5) - huge but dry and overpriced Butter paneer (5/5) Chicken tikka poutine (3/5) - the idea was fusion but really all I could taste was the fries which although well made couldn't deliver the chicken tikka flavor I expected Sausage (2/5) - sausage flavor was overwhelming to the rest of the sauce underneath Clams (5/5) - probably the best thing we ordered. More than enough clams and the curry sauce was a competitive pick Overall while the food was alright the service was what really did it for me.
