This is a great tailor and men's clothing store. Definitely a store with old-time excellent customer service. Like another reviewer, it had been a few year since I was in the store. But with a new job and a few extra pounds, I needed a number of suits quickly. Even though I came to the store close to closing time, they stayed to fit me and had the first two suits expertly tailored the next day. Anatoly's prices are outstanding considering the quality of their clothes. Suits are moderately priced and much better than Macy's at the same price point. And it would be insulting to compare Anatoly's to the big box men's clothing stores -- there is no comparison. Anatoly's has always done great package deals - a shirt, neck tie or belt thrown in for free or a significantly reduced price. They even had a new (to me) points system that rewards your purchases. I'm looking forward to a free custom-made shirt I earned by buying a number of suits. There is also a watch repair service in the store. The gentleman embraces old-world values of craftsmanship and honor. My wife and I brought in 6 or 8 watches for batteries and other repairs. He quickly serviced everything, and did not charge us for some of the minor repairs. He brought one or two watches back to life we thought would be lost. Anatoly's has been a fixture on Piedmont Avenue for years now and Tony is without a doubt one of the finest tailors I've met in my 20 years on the West Coast. His prices are very reasonable and his work is impeccable. There are plenty of people out there who have sewing machines and sew a straight line but Tony's an artist! I needed to have a dress mended, and the place down the street was closed. So I decided to give these guys a try. I needed a rush job, so they said I needed to pay up front. It was Thursday, and I had forgotten my wallet, so we agreed that I would come in to pay the next day and though they were very busy, they would try to fix it for me by Saturday. Well, life got in the way and I never made it in on Friday. When I came in Saturday afternoon, I expected that my dress would not be fixed. But I was wrong. My dress was already repaired. Fair and honest, good QPR, great tailor. If you want to buy a glued (fused) suit from a big company that spends megabucks on branding (i.e. the thing that keeps your attention away from the inferior quality of their garments), shop elsewhere. For your $800-1000, you will get a glued together suit made in China. These brands include everything at Mens Wearhouse minus 2 (Hickey Freeman (which you can buy for $369 on sale if you can find one in your size at the Livermore, CA Saks Off Fifth) and another), Hugo Boss (minus their top end line), Armani, everything in Macy's and Bloomingdales, everything but one line in Brooks Brothers, etc. You'll pay $1000-1500 for the same construction in a suit that Anatoly (Tony) carries for a fraction of the price (though he does carry cheaper assembly line fused suits at a great price). I have personally seen one suit line he carries at a well-known menswear store in Walnut Creek for literally 3x the cost. I saw the same suit I purchased from him in J. Barbaro in San Jose for $1000 (that store is making at least $750 profit). He will tailor a suit to fit perfectly and help you every step of the way. Like another Yelper referenced, Tony will fight for what he believes is best, and always with good reason. I wanted a bit more tailoring taking in the sides of my jacket under the arms to achieve the look of a modern, Italian fit; however, with the suit I chose, it would have significantly reduced my arm movement. I bought a half-canvassed suit under the Mattarazi Uomo label, which is the same as M.Valentino that TheWizardofAahs online on AskAndyAboutClothes (AAAC) has successfully sold for years. It is vetted by people on AAAC and StyleForums who know tailoring and fine menswear. It is a no-name brand also carried under various other names, but It is my opinion that you cannot find a better suit firsthand for your money in a solid business color without a ridiculous amount of work. The suit looks as good as a $1500 Canali from Nordstrom (which, really, is a middle-of-the-road suit quality-wise, but with superior fabric). I recommend Tony highly from his expertise in tailoring to his ability to help an informed customer. His sewing is top-notch, and I had a decent amount of work done on my jacket. Hint: he doesn't like to bargain. You will get the lowest price if you ask for it. Once. If he tells you his best price, that is going to be it. I know this because I heavily researched value-branded half-canvassed suits before stumbling upon his store and his pricing is quite reasonable. I watched multiple customers whose cultural backgrounds disallow them from his type of honesty ("this is my best price"). They ended up paying literally hundreds of dollars more for my exact same suit, all because they couldn't buy something without bargaining him down and pissing him off. Their loss. I've had many suits tailored by various tailors over the years. Tony's work is the best. Highly recommended unless you are shopping for a fully-canvassed suit. read more

I found Anatoly's when I moved to Oakland 3 years ago. I was looking all over for a good tailor and discovered them through Yelp. I first brought some pants in to be hemmed and Tony turned them around quickly and altered them perfectly. Next I brought in some shirts I wanted tapered for a more tailored look, and Tony also executed those alterations perfectly. Soon enough I became a regular. Tony's alterations have meant that I could reimagine my wardrobe - his work has enabled me to reinvent pieces of clothing and subsequently prevented me from getting rid of old items and replacing them. All in all I've had Tony hem pants, take in shirts and jackets, sew new buttons on my pea coat, fit a classic overcoat that was two sizes too big for me, taper jeans, adjust sleeve lengths on suit jackets, and even tailor a pair of sweat pants. His ability to perfectly tailor every piece of clothing I brought to him convinced my wife that she should bring her clothes to Tony for alterations. He took in the bust line on an expensive dress for her and even redid the lining of her favorite coat. Beyond all of Tony's technical prowess, he and the guys in the shop are all as friendly and helpful as can be. Their customer service is second to none. I appreciate all of them so much that when it came time to purchase a suit for my wedding I decided I had to purchase it through them. I bought a beautiful blue plaid suit that Tony made minor adjustments to. The suit came out awesome and it's easily my favorite of the suits I own. I've also purchased shirts and sport coats from Anatoly's. All the guys in the shop have an eye for style and have never lead me astray. Anatoly express altered my tux pants for a party the next night, picked it up the next day hours before the party, took it home and tried them on again, they seemed a little too long, called him up said so, he told me bring them back and he fixed them to perfection because I actually brought the shoes I was gonna wear to the party, and this was one hour before the party started! I gave him a little extra money, but I just think it was very nice and great for him to have done that for me, I don't think any other place would've done that, because he seemed pretty busy otherwise, and I was very happy and looked great for the party, whereas if he didn't do that I would've been uncomfortable and the tux would've looked a little off. If you don't accept what he tells you without asking questions, you'll be turned away. That's what happened to me when my husband and I went to him for a difficult tailoring job on a vintage tuxedo. He's egotistical, with a heavy dose of chauvinism - as I suspect he objected to the fact that the questions were coming from a woman. Ironically, my questions were educated questions based on recommendations from vintage clothing experts, a lot of research, and the advice of a much better tailor than Anatoly. So, if you are a guy and you are interested in doing exactly what Anatoly says, you'll be fine - though you may get an inferior alterations job in the end. read more

I did the free in store tailoring for the suit I planned to wear on my wedding day (and it was actually still $50 at Macy's). The tailor there cut the pants way too short without any tapering- so they looked like some horrible mashup of Hammer pants, bell bottoms, and slacks. I've been buying my suits at Nordstrom for over 20 years....until yesterday. I had heard of Anatoly's through a friend so decided to check them out before buying my next suit. I was greeted by Kirill who was extremely friendly and helpful. I let him know my budget and that I was looking for a suit to wear to a formal wedding. I was immediately shown several really nice styles and cuts. Tony, the master tailor, came out and also suggested a few suits that would work well with my larger frame. I couldn't help but notice that even though Kirill and Tony were the only two in the store, every customer that walked in was greeted warmly and received the same excellent attention that I was getting. Kirill made it a point to show me suits within my budget, and never once made an attempt to try and get me to stretch my limits. That alone was so refreshing and made my experience so easy and pressure free. After I made my decision on my suit, Tony took my measurements and Kirill rang me up. They even told me to pick out a tie to go with my new suit as a thanks for doing business with them. What really sealed the deal for me, was after learning that I lived more than 30 minutes from the shop, Kirill offered to deliver my suit to my home when my alterations were complete. Had an amazing experience buying my first suit from Anatoly's. Ended up buying two suits because of the quality and excellent tailoring. Kirill and Anatoly were very friendly and professional. I asked for a minor adjustment with the tailoring and they had no problem making the adjustments to ensure I was satisfied. Kirill also provided helpful tips on color schemes for shirt and ties that would match well with the suit. I went into the store at around 11:30AM and left by 12PM having bought a new suit. I brought my beloved 1960's vintage military trousers in to have the waist and seat taken in. They fit like a glove now! I literally can't even tell they've had any work done, the alteration is so perfect. they took the seams apart and re-sewed everything exactly how it was. LOVE Anatoly's! I've been going to him for all my dress alterations. You can call me the real life 27 dresses, I swear my part time job is being a bridesmaid! Needless to say, I need dresses altered constantly. Anatoly always provides quick and professional service. I stop in for a quick measurement in my dress and he has it completed within a week. He's done it all for me- hemming, taking in, to completely changing the look of the dress! Prices are beyond reasonable especially for the turnaround time. I've shopped around a lot for alterations, but not after I found Anatoly! He's my go to for every wedding now. Anatoly and everyone there is always so sweet, they make me feel like family. Despite that, I am loyal to Anatoly's and went with them. Come wedding day, ALL DAY every bridesmaid was pulling and re-pinning their dresses to keep it up...except for me. By the reception, some girls were just sticking pins everywhere without caring how it'd look out of frustration that they had to keep messing with their dresses and there was still the whole night ahead. These guys were true professionals dealing with a tricky situation in a short amount of time, right before my wedding. They did an excellent job shortening the sleeves on a couple of shirts, as well as some darting in the back.
