My fiancé and I had her first date at the anchor bar six years ago and it was amazing. I haven't been there since but I decided I would pick us up a couple burger baskets for our children and us for dinner. They didn't tell me when I ordered dinner they only take cash I packed up my toddler with my heart husband at home excited for burger baskets. I got into the busy bar and the very rude blonde over tanned bartender so rudely ignored me for a good 15 minutes all their staff five people behind the counter and not one person help me nor was anyone else being waited on until I called out and said excuse me ma'am you have my order in your hand she said when I handed my credit card For payment we haven't taken plastic since 1976 and threw my food on the other side of the counter. My crying baby and me practically in tears walking out of that bar will never return for any business ever again in fact it was the rudest help I have ever witnessed in my young 36 years. read more

Burgers are the best in Superior. Definitely a hole in the wall- typical dive bar but wonderful food. They do have an atm but bring cash. Great seating area outside in the summer. But no matter when you go- prepare to wait for a seat. They are popular! And for good reason! read more

Every time I've come here I've been impressed with the staff and the burgers but yesterday I took a couple of friends from out of town who had never been but had heard all about this bar and their amazing burgers. We sat down and before we even opened the menus the waitress was pushy with our orders and seemed like she really didn't wanna be there. My friend ordered and when the waitress asked if he wanted French fries with his order he said yes please extra crispy fries. She responded rudely and with an eye roll "crispy what"? He said fries, please. She asked my other friend what he would like to drink he asked what do you have for diet? She rudely responded, "diet what"? The food is fantastic and the staff is really kind and it's a really good price for the portion they give you the fries are homemade not out of a frozen bag and you can tell when you bite into them and the burgers are really good and juicy the cooks know what they are doing I just wish they had more for appetizers but that won't stop me from keep going back there read more

Anchor bar is one of those old-school restaurants that has all kinds of crazy items on the wall. It really gives you that old tavern feel. I will say that if you read any other reviews you'll find out quickly that the service is sub par but the burgers and the price easily make up for it. I didn't go with the giant 1 pound burger but I did end up going with the jalapeño cream cheese burger which was phenomenal. Fresh beef patty, fried onions, jalapeños, and cream cheese! I will admit I have never had a burger like this but it definitely was awesome! Myself and another guest each had burgers, fries, and two cokes and our total bill was $16! Came on a Sunday night. Burgers were good, service was not. We waited a good bit because the server forgot to come back to take our order after dropping off our drinks. Looked forward to the fries but they were soggy and bland. Burgers weren't anything special but they weren't bad. When we were ready to leave, we had to walk up to the bar to ask for the check, she brought out the check then neglected to come back to take our payment. If you want a bar with outstanding North Shore atmosphere and terrific food look no further than Anchor Bar and Grill. With the best burgers around, everyone in the area knows this place. One step inside and you will fill like you entered an old ship, with a darker lighting, nets, fishing line and anchors hanging from every nook and cranny, you will never get bored with the surroundings. Anchor Bar is a definite favorite to many Superior locals and students in the area. I normally try to go by myself or with only one other person since it is a small place and there is limited seating. The amazing burgers are very affordable (my favorites are the Ruben burger and the buffalo/blue cheese burger)! Of the many times I have been there I have only had my burger a bit over cooked maybe twice.. but still good for the price. The beer is also extremely well priced (welcome to Superior where beer/booze is insanely cheap compared to many other cities). The decor is amazing and there is so much to look at on the walls and ceiling. They do have takeout as well. The only reason I'm not rating this a 5 is because its hard to find seating sometimes, especially if you have more than two people, cash only (they have an ATM), and the few times I had a crispy burger. Overall definitely worth a stop! PS most of the staff is notorious for not necessarily being overly friendly, which is fine, it gets very busy and they are direct. I like to be left alone and relaxing by myself so this is not an issue for me. read more

Out of the over 100+ restaurants we've eaten at this has to be #1 for worst service. Blond waitress was rude, non-responsive, had an attitude, never came to our table to check on food quality or need for anything else. We had to ask for our bill and then when asked if we paid her, she acted like it was an imposition to take our money. The food, in my opinion, does not warranty the 'Triple D' endorsement and was nothing special. We asked the waitress if the Bacon Burger was good and she said, 'I don't eat hamburger'. Then why do you work at a hamburger place, if you can't recommend the food? After seeing this place on TV, we were excited to go there as it is close to us, but after eating the food and the waitress with the attitude will not be back. No service + no beverages + no food should = no stars. After several suggestions from family members to check out the burgers here we decided to give it a try. Hearing that it could be busy I called ahead and asked how long the waits might be for our party of five. "Your guess is as good as mine" was the terse reply. Should have made a note of that. Drove over from Duluth and found parking right across the street. As we entered the front door I was greeted with exactly what I had been told to expect. Lots of folks enjoying lots of burgers and lots of beer. (It was really hot out.) We waited patiently in the entrance trying to determine who might be the next table to leave. Several groups of patrons at the bar took the next two tables and as we were beginning to get a little discouraged we noticed a group coming in from the patio. We went out and took the only empty table remaining. Settling in and pleased to have a seat we pushed the empty beer steins to an open spot on the table and began to plan our orders. No one came out to serve us. So we waited...... and waited...... and waited..... nothing. Several times baskets of food were delivered to other tables on the patio and each time eye contact was made with the server. She returned inside the restaurant and never came back out to our table.. After 20 minutes (30 including time spent inside) I went in and asked the bartender if anyone was serving on the patio. "Someone should be." Exactly. "I'll send someone out." After another 10 to 15 minutes of waiting we realized, after other patrons told us of 30 minute waits for food after ordering, that we would try our luck down the street at the Thirsty Pagen Brewery with some highly rated local pizza. On the way out the bartender and a server saw us leaving. "Don't worry about it" I said. "Don't worry about WHAT?!?" the server snapped back. So off we went to the Pagen where we were greeted, seated and beveraged in less than 5 minutes after walking through the door. Went to this place after seeing it on "diners, drive-in's and dives" with my parents while visiting the northwoods. Disappointed doesn't quite get across how bad we all felt upon leaving. Sure it was cheap, but it should be, as it was the worst burger we ever had, all 3 of us agreed. I had the mushroom and swiss, parents each had the anchor burger. They were over cooked to say the least...no flavor. Meat tasted like dishwater :( Not to mention the waitress asked us each if we wanted fries or chips as though they were included in the price, which they weren't. One of the bar tenders/servers was so rude I thought it was one of those places that was nasty to their patrons as a joke (I don't believe it is, but am still unsure). A quaint little bar that serves burgers. Packed full of antique items related to shipping, boats, etc. Cool looking and it has its place for those occasional bar crawl nights. The juke box is packed with cool selections, and the graffiti in the Men's Room never fails to disappoint. Definitely an institution, although I think it's food is way overrated. In a nutshell, the burgers are cheap and greasy, and I've seen enough of their little kitchen to know I don't want to eat there often.
