MUST-READ - I RECOMMEND THIS BUSINESS! Let me preface this review by saying that we are going through some uncertain times. COVID-19 is not something that I take lightly and it has been difficult to find a reputable dentist that takes the virus as seriously I also do. Dr. Tara Johnston made me feel very comfortable being there and went above and beyond her call of duty to provide stellar and professional dental services. For example, before I even sat in the chair, they required me to wear a mask before even entering the building. Once I was comfortably sat in a chair, the very kind folks checked my temperature with a non-invasive and contactless thermometer. After they ensured I was not running a fever, they asked me a series of 4-5 questions about if I had been experiencing any symptoms related to COVID-19. I mentioned to them that I had not, but nonetheless, I was impressed with their carefully thought out protocol. I could tell the second I walked into the door that I was dealing with experienced industry professionals. I also must let you know that I am a big baby when it comes to going to the dentist. I'm the kind of guy that literally faints when someone wants to draw blood or give me a shot - let alone be around any sharp utensils that are going to go inside of my mouth. In fact, I hadn't seen a dentist for several years before my visit. This uneasiness was immediately calmed and entirely diminished when I interacted with Dr. Tara Johnston. Her kind and professional demeanor made me feel at home - she listened intently to my needs and did everything to make the cleaning as comfortable as possible. She would read my body language and give me the opportunity to take a break if I need to. I recently saw Dr. Johnston for a cleaning and filling and she was absolutely wonderful. She made me feel at ease and thoroughly explained the procedures. It was my first filling, so I was feeling a little uneasy, but she made sure I felt comfortable the whole time and I barely felt a thing! Terrible customer service and mistreatment of new patients. I had an appointment as a new patient a couple of months ago that I could not keep. Called 24 hours before and canceled. Just contacted them to make that appointment now. Their receptionist "Kevin" said they have archived me as a patient and no longer wish to accept me as a patient because they required 48 hours notice for canceling which was not beknown to me. Very rude and non customer friendly policy. Which I am glad they showed so early on. Who knows how they would have treated me down the road. read more

I have had nothing but positive experiences visiting Dr. Hallisy's office--all of her staff are very kind and helpful. Before I visited this office, I had not been to the dentist for many years because of previously horrible experiences I had with other dentists when I was younger. I had some anxiety at first, but this went away as soon as I saw Dr. Johnston. She had a way of putting me at ease and I felt comfortable through-out my initial check-up/cleaning appointment. After our former dentist relocated my wife and I started going to this practice - Just got back from a filling procedure by Tara Johnston DDS - wow did not feel any pain what so ever even though it was for a deep cavity - hardly even felt the lidocaine injection - a "Pro 's Pro" - she and her assistant were very professional and friendly at the same time The whole premises are kept clean and pleasant - Joy, the receptionist, is a "Joy" as a scheduler and more - my wife sees Julia Halllisy DDS and also is very pleased with her - if the need arises for the "dreaded dental visit" go see them you will come away "wanting to go back" (a slight exaggeration) - but you get the point - they do make it "painless as possible" - the only problem which one to choose ? read more

I had a very upsetting and awful experience as a patient at Julia Hallisy's dental practice located in the West Portal neighborhood of San Francisco. You will need to pay for metered parking if you want to park close-by. The receptionist stated prior to me coming that all staff wear 2 masks and a face shield, but the person who did my x-rays barely wore her 1 mask as it did not cover her nose.She did not wear a face shield. The dentist office itself is adjacent to another doctor's office and the two offices share a waiting area. The shared common space with the doctor's office is very busy, so I would expect others in the waiting area. I was also given incorrect information about general dentistry. The dentist told me cavities are reversible. This information is false. I also told Dr. Tara Johnston (the associate dentist at Julia's practice) that my teeth did not feel as clean as when I normally do my routine cleaning. She refused to take a look at my teeth again. I am guessing because she is lazy and did not care about me. Dr. Tara Johnston demanded I take off my face mask well before she put on her own face shield. I wish this dentist would care more about their patients as well as take all health precautions more seriously. I am extremely disappointed by this dentist. read more

This is a follow up to my review of 2/2/2019. After I published my review (4 stars) of Dr. Julia Hallisy's associate dentist for giving me a routine exam, Dr. Julia Hallisy Sent me a letter saying that she did not want me as a patient any more as a result of my review in Yelp. Since I was in the process of moving at the time, I knew that I would need a dentist closer to where I was moving to, so I did not protest her decision. I thought it was very unprofessional of Dr. H. to dismiss me as a patient as a result of my review of her associate dentist. Furthermore I still gave the review 4 stars for the office as a whole, and not just for her associate. I was not a new patient and had been seeing Dr. H. for several years prior to this incident. For a professional dentist to reject a patient for giving a less than stellar 5 star review is, in my opinion, unprofessional. She was within her rights to reject a patient for any reason, or even to reply in Yelp to my review, but in my opinion you should be aware she may retaliate against you if you give her or her associate dentist anything less than a 5 star review. Let the buyer (or reviewer) beware. read more

I've been going to Dr. Hallisy since high school and she always does me right. Aside from being a kind and gentle dentist, the general feel of her office is very inviting. The receptionist is super nice and everyone there just seems happy. Since she started working with Dr. Grayson Pierson, it's been even easier to get last-minute appointments. The only bad thing about Dr. Pierson is that she recently informed me that I'll be needing to get my wizzies out. Not that it's her fault. I always like to choose female doctors not only for the comfort level and all, but also to support their work in the medical industry. I was very nervous getting my crown done. I have serious anxiety when seeing needles especially big ones! Dr. Hallisy made me very comfortable and I barely felt the injection. I have had great dentists and I have had awful dentists, so I was pretty nervous about a new dentist when I moved to San Francisco. Fortunately, I received a referral from a neighbor and it was a great referral. Dr. Hallisy is a Super Dentist with a flying cape! Friendly, patient, knowledgeable and thorough. When she couldn't identify the source of my pain, she referred me to someone who did. When I told her my autistic grandson was about to have his first dental appointment, she made me a gift bag of Elmo Goes to the Dentist, toy mirrors, toothbrushes, etc. to get him used to the idea. Who does that??!! Dr. Hallisy does. She is a gift and I am grateful to know that never have to experience an awful dentist again. She is my dentist for as long as she is in practice. I was originally referred to Dr. Hallisay's office to receive a crown for my dental implant. She is super friendly, knowledgeable, and thorough. After seeing how great Dr. Hallisy's office was, I also started to go to her office for my regular dental cleanings. I have been going to her office now I think over 2 years and I am so excited to finally have a great dentist that I know really cares! This is the type of dentist who actually gives you personal attention and intelligent one sided conversation while she works on you. Always making sure you are comfortable, she does not leave some random hygienist (although her hygienist was very cool too) to do her dirty work and you feel so welcomed by the whole staff when you come in. I also like Dr. Hallisy because she does not tell me I need some expensive sleep guard that insurance would never cover and she is not into pushing unnecessary services like many dentists do today to make extra bucks. I've gone to Dr. Hallisy 3 times over 1.5 years. I meant to write a review when I had my semi annual cleaning in August. I appreciate Dr. Hallisy becuase 1. she does her own "final" cleaning after her technician does the initial cleaning. I think this is rare for the dentist to do any of the cleaning. 2. I've gone because of specific pains in my teeth. Every time she's deferred treatment because she thought I might not need it, and that the problem would go away. She's been right! I never thought I would say such a thing but I LOVE MY DENTIST. Dr. Hallisy is super gentle and knowledgeable. She is really kind, informative, and genuinely cares about my dental health. She takes her time when cleaning and examining my teeth and doesn't make me feel like she's rushing through our sessions. I would give her practice 5 stars because usually my visits are superb. But, my experience today with her new dental assistant made me knock off a star. When she polished my teeth, it hurt, she was sloppy and got polish all over my face. When she rinsed with water, it dripped all down my neck. When she applied fluoride, she was super sloppy and got it all over my gums, lips, and chin. (Before, a dental hygienist usually applied it for me and she only applied the fluoride on my teeth). All in all, I highly recommend Dr. Hallisy to anyone who's looking for a new dentist.
