I've seen several hygienists in the last few years, and Shoichi exceeds all. He's extremely thorough and detailed and yet not rough on my teeth. He points out where and how I should better floss/brush and provides free sample tools specific to my needs. He takes the time to answer my questions and never rushes me out (even when we drift to discussing films we enjoy!). This last visit, he took the extra time to clean my bite guard. The clinic is not in my insurance network, but Shoichi is well worth the 'co-pay'. Denice (front desk) is a jewel. She's very competent and warm and has years of experience. She took the time to point out insurance options (that my insurance broker did not mention). Dr Donnelly is very gentle and caring, important qualities where potential pain is involved! read more

I have been a patient here for many years. Dr Donnelly and her staff have always been helpful, professional, and given my teeth good care!

COVID made almost everything worse. It had the strange side effect, however, of improving my dentist-appointment waiting-room experience. Don't get me wrong; Dr. Donnelly's waiting room is comfy and pleasant, if a little bit small. I tend to get to my appointments early, so I've spent plenty of time here reading. It's fine. But when Dr. Donnelly's office finally opened up again for regular cleanings in 2021, they no longer allowed you to wait in their office waiting room (and they still don't--you call when you arrive, and they call you back when they're ready for you.) I skipped some important stuff. Dr. Donnelly's office is located in this kind of ridiculous tower on Van Ness with ritzy (I'm assuming) residential units on top and all kinds of medical offices on the lower floors and a shipping store on the street level. Anyway, her office shares the main floor, which isn't the lowest one, except for when you're coming from the alley--it's way too complicated too explain easily--with the residential tower's lobby, so there are real-life security guards waiting at a desk (but they won't hassle you) and all kinds of really comfortable chairs an couches to sit in and read. The people-watching in this lobby is divine, especially if you're sitting near the elevators. They get so much action! Most of the residents seem like friends of the famous San Francisco twins who dressed alike their entire shared lives, plus some random rich immigrants whose parents insisted they get a safe place to live. It is safe, but the funny part is it's technically not secure at all, because you can walk right into the building without anyone ever looking twice at you. That's why I like waiting here so much. There are other good things about the lobby as well, but this is a five-star review, so I should get to reviewing. I've never had a truly negative experience here. From the front desk to the billing to the dental hygienists to Dr. Donnelly herself, everyone is kind, friendly, and totally professional. It's a five-star operation all the way around. I've had two or three regular hygienists. I don't remember the names of either of the first two, but both were very good. Shoichi has been my regular hygienist for a few years now, and he's spectacular. He's friendly and will talk if you want to, but he never asks questions when you can't physically answer, and he never allows talking to get in the way of efficiency. I had to reschedule a visit earlier this year, so I didn't get Shoichi. The hygienist I got, whom I'd never had before, was rather rough with the cleaning, but I had also had a pretty stressful eight months and probably hadn't been taking care of my teeth as well as usual, so it was partially my fault. If you have a choice, though, ask for Shoichi. Oh, and this most recent appointment, he didn't tell me I hadn't anything to improve! That's the first time in my life that neither the dentist nor the hygienist pointed out anything I was doing wrong or neglecting to do. Dr. Donnelly is super sweet and thorough. Overall, the office is very efficient with the way they do scheduling. If Dr. Donnelly won't be there when you're supposed to have a yearly exam, they'll let you know beforehand so that you can change your appointment to when she'll be there. Their scheduling texting can border on the extreme. However, if you do miss an appointment, it's definitely your fault, because it means you ignored five or six texts, starting the week before your appointment. It's not the cheapest dentist's office, even for regular cleanings. They've always accepted my insurance, but when I first started coming here, I'd owe like $40 or so even after my insurance kicked in since they charge so much more for cleanings and x-rays than most places do. I've since rectified that with my employer, but it's something to be aware of. If you're looking for a permanent dentist, you should give Dr. Donnelly a try. Street parking isn't as difficult as you think it will be, as long as you park west of Franklin Street. It's also close to public transit. The 49-Van Ness/Mission runs right out front of the building on Van Ness, and the 38-Geary isn't too far either. read more

I'm so incredibly unhappy with the care I received by Dr. Donnelly. I had switched dentists and was informed that there was a 50 percent chance that I would lose several teeth. Dr. Donnelly never even mentioned the issue or the fact that they were deteriorating, and the issue is not correctable. Yes, Dr. Donnelly is very nice but she apparently has an issue with delivering news that isn't positive. I was also told I had significant bone loss which, again, Dr. Donnelly never mentioned...and this issue could have potentially been addressed by a specialist. I was referred by a friend and have had nothing but good experiences. I've probably been to the office four times now. When I first visited, Dr. Donnelly was actually on maternity leave and the doctor who covered was great. Everyone has a really pleasant demeanor, lovely bedside manner, and just overall seem happy to be working there. Had my teeth cleaned today in a dry (no polish or water-spray) due to the pandemic and I honestly preferred that to a typical cleaning. The hygienist was extremely thorough. Dr. Donnelly is just wonderful. She is patient and kind and understands anxiety about going to the dentist. Melody is a wonderful hygienist whom I have the pleasure of seeing for teeth cleaning. I was a patient of Dr. Donnelly's for several years while I lived in San Francisco. She and Shoichi were always wonderful. When my new retainers broke due to nighttime grinding, she called my old dentists in Michigan to find a new manufacturer and made me a replacement at no additional cost. I feel that she was always honest and caring with me. I have unfortunately since moved so have been looking for a new dentist. However, it has been difficult to find one who won't recommend useless procedures to make $ like Dr. Donnelly. She has given me a second opinion when requested, helping me avoid hundreds of dollars in dental procedures that I don't need. This dentist is tops. Going to her for 15 years. Started with her when I first moved to the city and was referred by a friend. Back then it was just one chair in her place and she and I. Since then she's grown her practice and her family. The same amazing personal treatment and customer service remains. Ann and her staff are warm, caring and gentle! I was looking for a new dentist 1.5 yrs ago and a number of people on NextDoor had highly recommended Dr Donnelly, but before I officially became her patient I had an urgent dental need and called her office in need of help and hoping to get squeezed into her busy schedule. Her wonderful staff, Denice and Arlin, were so helpful, but what really took the cake was Dr Donnelly taking the time to call me to ask and answer questions about my situation and we hadn't even yet met. I've seen her twice now for treatment and she is knowledgeable, thorough, patient, so caring and personable. I've never before felt that level of trust with a dentist. Okay, so Dr. Donnelly is great. No complaints with her as a dentist, however I called today to see if I could reschedule my appointment because I'm 32 weeks pregnant and woke up with an awful cold (therefore the thought of getting myself ready and driving into the city is not what I want to deal with today). I gave them 5.5 hours notice and asked politely if I could reschedule and the receptionist's response was that since I didn't give 48 hours notice I'd be charged a rescheduling fee of...get ready...$100!!!!! That's crazy! I understand a $25 fee, or even a big fee if this is a reoccurring issue with a patient, but seriously?!?! Dr. Donnelly and staff, you should keep in mind that you are charging this ridiculously high fee to peole who are already your patients, who out of all the dentists in the Bay Area chose to come to you. read more

Is it weird that I look forward to going to the dentist? Today she told me that I needed a crown...alas, I knew it since I had a crack the size of the San Andreas Fault down my tooth...but when she confirmed this, she actually sounded sad for me. It's been about three years since I've been going to Dr. Donnelly and I've been so pleased with her work that I've recommended her to my best friend, my best friend's husband and my best friend's other best friend! I have never liked going to the dentist before. Bad habits combined with bad genes and an out of control sugar craving left me needing an unmentionable number of cavities filled a few years ago and I finally got hip to the fact I need regular 6 month cleanings. I went to a few dentists to fix the cavities and had some minor cosmetic work done. All good work but never good experiences with the dentist or their staff. A friend referring me to Anne after I recalled the experience I had with a dentist whose hand shook in my mouth. I called to make an appointment and they had space for me within the few weeks. Anne is very personable and sweet. She seemed genuinely interested in my dental health and wanted to make sure all my concerns were addressed. I never felt talked down to or judged, and actually in fact I felt respected and like I had just met another awesome human being. I left and realized - WOW. I am in a really good mood! I have only had one appointment with Dr. Donnelly since she took over from Dr. Doyle and she was very thorough and nice. The dental hygienists are AMAZING and deserve five stars unto themselves. I had a bad experience recently though when Dr. Donnelly's office scheduled an appointment for me while I was on vacation. They called me and left a few voicemails with questions about what I want to have done at my appointment and specific claims that I had confirmed the appointment, which I obviously didn't. Then of course when I missed it, they called about that as well. When I returned, I called to explain the situation and they never even apologized! But hopefully you're getting the picture. My point is this - you can take everything you've ever known about dentists and throw it out the window. There is nothing pretentious, stuffy, awkward, or aloof about Dr. Donnelly. Going to see her is like going to go see your friend. Your super, awesome, really fun and funny friend. Your friend who you just happen to trust enough to tilt you back in a chair and put sharp objects into your mouth. I personally tend to feel a little awkward and uncomfortable in one-on-one situations where people are tending to me in some way, but Dr. Donnelly totally puts me at ease. I'm one of those crazy people that love going to the dentist. I've been like this since I was a kid. It may have been all the cheesy toys they offered when I was younger. So being unhappy with my past dentist, I knew something was up. This did not feel right, I'm supposed to love my visits, not dread their calls and unhappily skulk over to their office. SO, I just had my first appt with Ann yesterday and I am so happy I switched dentists. I was always a little iffy with my past dentist, she was great at what she did, but her staff was a bit off, would call me about the same things I already discussed with the dentist, made me feel uncomfortable when I asked about the bill and certain charges, AND I came to later find out they had been overcharging me. Plus they asked for yelp reviews, which I found a bit off putting. If I feel you warranted a yelp review, I'd give you one. Which brings me to this review, completely warranted and not prompted by anyone but me. I walked in for my appt fifteen minutes earlier like they had asked so I could fill out some paperwork, and by the time my appt time rolled around, there was Ann, greeting me right on time (unlike my past dentist who would keep me waiting up to half an hour past my appt time sometimes.) Ann was ridiculously nice and I felt completely comfortable with her poking around my teeth. Not only was she nice to me, she was also really sweet with her staff (unlike my past dentist, which also made me feel very awkward. You can't be short with your staff and turn to me and be nice, it's just wierd). My appt was just a routine cleaning, which gets a bit painful sometimes with other dentists that are a bit too aggressive with the evil scraper, but Ann was gentle and did an awesome job. I flashed my teeth at the boyfriend when I got home and he said they looked whiter, woo! Another great thing about Ann is she didn't try to push things on me like my past dentist, who convinced me to remove my silver fillings for the tooth colored ones. She also told me one of the other silver fillings had a crack in it and I would have to get that replaced soon. I asked Ann and she said she saw nothing wrong with the filling. I feel so duped by my past dentist, but I'm so glad I got out in time to rekindle my love with dentistry. read more

Dr. Donnelly provides great service, she cares about her patients, and is ethical to boot. I found Dr. Donnelly a couple years ago after almost being price gouged at Dr. Debbie(?) Piccolati's practice in Union Square. Dr. P. gave me a workup plan that involved fillings I didn't need and overpriced xrays that I already had. I confirmed this report by seeing a doctor at my cousin's dental practice in LA. .When I returned home, I wanted to find a trustworthy dentist in the Bay Area. I scheduled an appointment for an exam with Dr. Donnelly and she agreed with my cousin's diagnosis-that I didn't have cavities! In addition, she was communicative and supportive. I even asked her about veneers to whiten my teeth and she said that they would not be effective enough for what I wanted to accomplish. Imagine that! A dentist who isn't out to rip you off! When later that year, I did need a crown, her prices were reasonable and the staff was cool about payment, however, most importantly, her work is great! She is also one of the nicest, honest, and most friendly (but not in a fake way) dentists that I have come across. read more

Who reviews a dentist? I do and I am not the first! She is great, friendly and a pleasant demeanor. She really explains what is going on and the procedures if any. I went after year of being in college and just never making my appointments back home. I had an appointment way earlier in the year where I was warn that I had 3 cavities (without insurance, after 4 years eh not bad). I joined Aetna, which she accepted and scheduled an appointment. Everything when nice and quick and truth of the matter came out it was only 2! All in all a great experience both times, as I just had my second cleaning... can I say looking forward to my next appointment? read more

I recently moved to San Francisco and got a referral to Dr. Donnelly. I was impressed with how quickly they fit both me and my boyfriend in for new patient appointments. During my visit Dr. Donnelly was attentive and spent a lot of time with me (unlike other dentists who might stop by for a moment and seem rushed). The other staff in the office were great as well. My boyfriend came home from his appointment and told me that Dr. Donnelly was the best dentist he'd ever had. We both have nothing but great things to say about our experience with her practice. I normally hesitate to give 5 stars, as there's always one tiny little thing that will set a business or person down from the full 5. But not with Dr Donnelly! She is a great conversationalist, and very funny. She cleans teeth wonderfully, and sympathetically. She will pre-authorise treatments so your bills aren't a shock. Even her office staff are practically jubilant to see you when you walk in - I often think that Brad Pitt must be standing behind me because they greet me so enthusiastically!
