This experience was an absolute dream for me. I had a tattoo I was very unhappy with from a different shop and got a cover up with Jen and it was absolutely everything I wanted. First - the space is so comfy. The waiting room is cozy and the room where you actually get the tattoo done had everything you could need, homey touches but still extremely clean. There was soft TV playing in the background that you can easily ignore OR pay attention. Second - the art was just amazing. I've had two half sleeves done by Jen over a span of years and she's done a spectacular job but recently I referred a law enforcement friend for a tattoo and after a few brief interactions on design she refused to do his tattoo and even discus it with him on the phone. She cited she couldn't produce what he wanted and wanted to do her own version. I'm not sure if she is anti law enforcement but it's very disappointing that she was unwilling to give the customer what he wanted and only do what she wanted. read more

I've been to the shop twice and then have emailed several times. Each tattoo was done by Tom Butts, who was highly recommended by a coworker. The first round was to get my first tattoo in January 2019 and then the second round was July 2019 for my second tattoo. The staff members were friendly, informative, and timely with their responses. Tom was awesome both times. I love his style/work. One of my tattoos was a custom design. I sent Tom the ideas I wanted incorporated and what style I was looking for. When I arrived to the appointment, he showed me the three that he came up with. After selecting the design, we gave me tips on placement. It turned out better than I ever imagined and I'm happy to see it on my arm everyday. My second tattoo was selected after spending far too much time on Tom's Instagram. It was a shark design from his flashbooks. A couple of emails later and I had an appointment booked. This one went really fast. It's only been a few days, but it is healing nicely. I'm getting ready to leave Rhode Island for Illinois and the two things that could prompt visits back are: my friends and getting more tattoos here. read more

I got a tattoo here 5 years ago and I am making a point to check in and review now for 2 reasons; My tattoo, although small, has held up beautifully over the years, including the small detailed writing. It's still legible because I was given helpful instructions on how to take care of my tattoo, and the products they sold in store truly worked, and because Anchor truly puts in the effort for each piece regardless of size. Amazing work, Jen drew out my sleeve and was great to work with. I had been referred by someone at my gym and I was wowed by how great the color was. The detail was amazing and she even able to add my newborn daughter Malia's name into the sleeve halfway through and made it look like it was part of the design. Super comfortable private room for the tattoo sessions with a nice comfy chair and Netflix on to pass the time. I plan on going back again in a year or so and having Jen design a sleeve for my right arm to match my left. I got my first tattoo here and I can't wait to go back and see what else Pete can do. Couldn't have asked for a better place to go! It's been just under a week since getting my tattoo on my ribs and it is healing wonderfully. The tightness of the lines for the words is just fantastic and is just clean and neat - couldn't have asked for anything better. Though I was warned my placement would hurt a lot, Pete was so great and it didn't hurt AT ALL. Though they may be a little pricey-er than other shops around, the quality of work and professionalism makes it completely worth it. This is a review on the tattoo service and not the piercing service. This is a great Tattoo shop. I have only had work done by Jen, and she did a wonderful job on my tattoo which was pretty much an entire back piece. I believe she has been a tattoo artist for about 15 years and you can see her years of experience in her artistry. Jen is very nice and she works fast, but is very attentive to every detail. On the day of my consultation, I let Jen know what I wanted in my tattoo and she put everything together beautifully. She also made sure to contact me via e-mail to update me about the progress of her sketches of my tattoo. You have to put down a $50 deposit when you schedule a consultation which goes towards the cost of your first tattoo session. The artists all have their portfolios of their work out on the front desk and you can also see their work on their official website. They have a really great tattoo salve that helps keep the tattoo moisturized and helps with the healing. This is an all natural product that is made by Jen herself. Also, if you have already used their Tattoo salve and you don't know what to do with the container because it is difficult to recycle that type of plastic, I heard that you can return the containers and they can recycle it for you. In addition, the place is very clean and Jen tries to make you feel as comfortable as possible. She usually has the T.V. on so you have something to watch during the whole process. read more

I found Anchor Steam through Yelp, and I always intended to write a review. I wish I could write a 5 star review about my awesome new tattoo. However, I had a 1 star experience. I ended up not getting the tattoo, so I don't think it's fair to give that low of a rating based on my limited experience with the work product. Additionally, nearly all these reviews are about Jen, and when I dealt with her at the very end she was exceptional, just like her portfolio. Frankly, I would highly recommend this business as a whole. However, I worked with Kevin. He has a good portfolio and can clearly tattoo well, but I can't recommend him for creating a unique design. It seemed the extent of what he could "create" was trace over found images cobbled together in Photoshop. When I worked in production in Hollywood, the worst kind of artists I dealt with were those who couldn't accept their first submission was anything other than perfect. Great artists know their first draft is never good and always needs revision. Criticism shouldn't hurt. When I told Kevin an element of the piece, a rifle, needed to face the opposite direction, he said that was not possible to get in a tattoo. His response was clearly a reflexive reaction to feedback, as what I asked fully took in his concern that a top down view of a rifle would be too narrow. In more than adequate description, extensive correspondence, I explained I wanted a side view like it was currently, just facing the other way like a flipped image. After several weeks of back and forth, with him clearly venting to the shop hands, I ultimately had to drive to two different stores to take pictures of what I wanted. When he saw the pictures, he finally took in what I was saying and said, "Oh, I can definitely do that!" It was the same thing I had been trying to get him to do for weeks! Then he photoshopped together the different elements and made the first drawn draft. Except, he just traced the underlying images without any modification, leaving the resulting image disproportionate with, for one example, my bulging forearm from the pictures I sent him set on top of a much smaller frame female figure. I brought this to his attention, which he fixed, but I also noticed the rifle was completely a 2 dimensional straight on view. I asked if he could give it more of a 3d box look. "No, that's not tattooable." was again the response. "Depth will come from shading." To make sure I wasn't crazy, I consulted with some of the tattoo artists I knew in DC who confirmed what I was asking was completely doable, so long as it wasn't at a sharp angle to accomplish. Then Kevin said he was wasting too much time on the project, I could keep the sketch he had done, and he would keep the deposit. Um, thanks? To her credit, Jen offered to refund the deposit, but there was never an acknowledgement of how much time Kevin wasted on this project being defensive rather than trying to understand the concrete feedback given. I wanted him to do an inspired piece of his own creativity, but what I saw was a rushed work of traced over source images, and his frustration when I wasn't ready to get that tattooed permanently on my body right away. I'm not really about trust when it comes to tattoos and the source material I'm being shown has clear mistakes, even if minor ones. Ultimately, Kevin seems like a really nice guy, but he can only get you what you want if you come in with the image already done. If he had been receptive to the basics I was giving him, we could have probably gotten an awesome tattoo worked out in a couple weeks. Instead, he wasted over a month of both our time, and it was important to me to get a tattoo while in Newport. A saved round, I found this shop to have very reasonable pricing contrary to some of the other reviews. I am used to having to pay MUCH more for my tattoos that are of comparable quality to what I saw in the portfolios. read more

Couldn't be happier with how the entire process went! I emailed reference pictures and size/location requests, was sent a sketch and set up with an appointment within 24 hours. I had to move my appointment at the last minute (3 days before) due to a schedule change at work, and they were SO nice about it - got me quickly rebooked and set up on waitlists for days I was available. Day of, my appointment was super easy and fast, and the tattoo is beautiful - exactly what I pictured, and I've been getting compliments on it daily! It can be a bit of a wait to get an appointment right now, but it's worth it. The staff was so incredibly kind and the piece is perfect. read more

The quality and expertise of Jen's work can not be matched. Her personality is sure to hook you in. Never mind the narcissistic jaded tough guy bullshit of shops in or around Boston. The shop is impeccably clean and modern. Any scheming idea you have for a tattoo can be easily matched. Every tattoo I've come for has greatly exceeded my expectations. Check the website for some portfolio photos. The prices may seem higher than some of your local shops, but in retrospect, it is equivalent to any tattoo parlor of legitimate work. You pay by hours for larger pieces or by flat rate for flashes. The staff are knowledgable and inviting. An older friend of mine who decided on a back piece was reduced to a 6 month old child's pain tolerance, endlessly crying. Staff came and talked with him and tried everything to help ease his worries and help him through. Once you stop by Anchor Steam Tattoo, you will never go to another parlor. I drive 1h 45min every time for a reason. Go and find out why. read more
