Having lived in Union 20 years ago and coming back to New Jersey for a visit I kept thinking about the big balls of fresh mozzarella. I used to get at this deli. We stopped on the way down to Central Jersey from the airport and I went into where I thought it was. These guys said that they bought it from the original owners maybe 10 years ago, but the fresh mozzarella was just as good and the bread just as crusty as I remember it. To be honest my wife hooked me up on this place. I forgot my lunch and was going to settle for something close to my job. However my wife surprised me with a Uber Eats delivery. The driver came with an sandwich that was The Italian. Well I fondant was able to dig in later in the day. The sandwich was fantastic. I went with prosciutto, salami, roasted red pepper, arugula and balsamic glaze. Chef's kiss! Don't sleep on the baked goods either. The cookie dough stuffed oreos were indulgent. My husband went with the house made truffle chips and loved them. Sandwiches are big, and a small is more than enough for a meal. Needed some meats for charcuterie board and they helped me greatly from choosing to slicing them. Their sandwiches were so stacked it was amazing! Cheeses could have been cubed but it worked. I got the cookie dough bites which were not the freshest so a bit disappointing on that. There's ample parking and lots of other stores to shop from in the area which was nice. Heard NJ had some good Italian delis so was in the search for one nearby this weekend and it was a pretty good find. Very homey vibes as soon as you walk in. Staff was friendly. We were the only ones there upon arrival, less than an hour before closing on a Saturday afternoon but shortly after they had a mini rush and some locals picking up a catering order. We ordered a half and full but the half was a decent size so don't be fooled. Two sandwiches, a lasagna roll up and two bevs was about $31 total, I would say pretty affordable. I would return and maybe create my own. The Italian was delicious, def recommend. I got the Chicken Avocado BLT, tasty but not sure I like the fried avocado. The meatballs were decent and the only thing I could actually finish eating, though the sauce tasted a bit sour. The baked ziti was just okay - nothing I'd recommend. Since everything was premade and sitting out, the food probably would've been better if it was fresher. More concerning was seeing one of the workers grabbing shrimp from the display with his bare hands and eating it, which wasn't sanitary at all. Doesn't look like much from the outside but this place packs a punch. It gets lost in the strip mall but glad I found it. The eggplant parm was delicious especially with the marinara sauce on the side. The turkey meatballs were unique and consisted of a different blend than your typical meatball. I would have to say 3.5 stars for me. Not sure how I feel about this place as the pictures from the owner look amazing, but when you walk in this place doesn't look to have much action. Deli's need to have a lot of activity in order to make new batches of food items, and this place lacks that. I would look closely at the salads, and baked goods that are out already before making the purchase. On the other hand, the sandwich I made was HUMUNGOUS! As to the PRICE-to-SIZE ratio you are getting a great deal, and a lot to eat depending on how hungry you are. You have 2 options: club & hero. BUT, they have this bigger loaf that they sell separately. I asked if they would be able to make a sandwich out of it, and they can accommodate that. Worth the try next time, but definitely needs to be shared. The fresh made-to-order chicken cutlet was very tasty! Big size pieces, and they sell by the pound. Only thing is you have to ask for it by the piece, and pay per pound. I noticed a freezer with some good eats if you're interested in buying frozen meals. Also, they have assorted flavored potato chips (actual potato slices) that taste great. Not sure if it's homemade, or locally bought. Overall, I recommend buying items that are freshly made or cooked. And, you won't be disappointed in the size of a sandwich here. I just wish there was more of an option. My son attends Kean U. I came out from Seattle to hang with him for a couple of weeks as he recovers from ACL surgery. I have come to realize my visit is one picking up one meal to the next. Before surgery a teammate of his, will call him JAMES took us to Hoboken to his "secret, fun spot." He found the ONLY BYB restaurant with no patrons. Poor James will never be able to get married because he will never impress a date with such lousy food. So today when I was given directions where I was going I thought, I wonder what the place will be like. My son Griffin said, "James is here, will both have the Chicken Alfredo." I said great I'll three, one for each of us." Seven minutes from campus, I pulled into the parking and placed my order, I said, "I like to order three to-go orders of Chicken Alfredo." The man said, "That's not possible, it's a cater only item." I said thank you, I need to call my son and see what's up. Sharing the conversation with my son, he said, "That's weird, we order it all the time after practice." I'm hot now, they're not serving "tourist" local cuisine. I walk in and go up to the counter and say, "I just spoke to someone about ordering three Chicken Alfredo's" and he said, "It's a 20 minute wait as everything is cooked fresh from scratch." I think to myself I'm on vacation, I replied, "That's fine." I sat down and watched the operation, eyeballing the guy who took my order. He walked out twice and picked up fresh supplies from a nearby vendor. "Fresh?" I laughed internally, Italian in our neighborhood is Olive Garden and no I stopped going when my boys got older. I realized his hesitation in preparing the meal. People come into the store and are leaving with their freshly made order every two minutes. This place is fully staffed back end and front end. I love the vibe of the place. And yeah I stood out like a sore thumb. Tall, old white guy with faded denim pants. East coast people don't do faded denim. Will make a mental note when we come back for May graduation. He returned from the back with three to-go orders. I said to him, "Who owns this place?" Quietly he said, "I do." I reached my hand over counter and said, "Thank you for making the meals, I love your place, how long have you had it." "Eight years." I left. Dropped off the cuisine to Griffin and James and left back to my BnB as I was starving. The reason I'm writing this novel is I have never tasted, no EXPERIENCED such a great Alfredo in 64 years of living. I have never tasted given a food review, never. The Owner, his staff, if you live in Union Township go order it. Just to rattle him, tell him you want the "Seattle Chicken Alfredo". He's a good Brother, tell him you're happy to jack up his entire staff for this gourmet meal. And ladies, if you ever go on a dinner date with James, tell him to come here. This is the only place near my office that I genuinely get excited to come to for lunch. Their kale caesar salad is one of the best. I feel like they make their own caesar dressing - & I'm talking about REAL caesar dressing with anchovy paste, egg yolks, etc. Also, the croutons are so buttery & garlicy - I'm assuming they definitely have to make these in house. I also tried their fried zucchini & mozzarella item and asked them to heat it up very hot. It was SO delicious. The zucchini wasn't soggy/mushy and the mozzarella that they use for this was also amazing. So far, everything I've tried has been delicious so give it a try! Great place for a quick lunch. I wanted some greens in my life so I stopped in and ordered a kale salad( sorry it didn't make it for the photo:) and a turkey club and I'm glad I did. I came here with a work buddy for lunch. We planned on going to subway right next door but I made the executive decision to try here. We ordered the our subs to-go. I got the Venda which has chicken cutlets with fresh mozzarella, red pepper, lettuce and tomatoes. I got the large for $8.95. Very affordable cost considering Italian subs I'm used to are easily over $10. Cc accepted. They have that Square thingy. I was lucky my buddy paid for lunch so I left extra happy. My buddy also purchased fresh potato chips with her sub. I forgot her sub's name but it had prosciutto mozzarella and broccoli rabe. The chips she bought were too thin. I was reminded of this amazing little deli market this morning and I just HAD to write a review for it: 2 years ago my brand new husband and I were driving to our honeymoon and decided we ready for lunch as we were passing through NJ - I quickly googled Deli and we decided to give this place a try - oh my goodness we were both so glad that we did!! From the outside, this little gem doesn't seem like a whole lot but the instant we walked in we were immediately affirmed we made the right decision. There was plenty of seating which was perfect because we didn't want to have to eat in the car, there were display cases that showed off the delicious looking made-from-scratch food that all looked mouth watering. The menu on the back wall was all handwritten on chalkboard and it was just a very welcoming environment. I believe they had a refrigerated/freezer selection as well so you could take some packaged food home with you - but since we weren't local and passing through, I didn't take much notice of that. I decided to get the Romano Sandwich and my husband decided to get one as well- except I got mine without the vinaigrette because I'm not a huge fan of vinaigrettes on sandwiches. The sandwich is delicious. I mean it definitely hit the spot - the flavors, the proportions, the fresh mozz, it was perfect. My first impression of the place was how clean and spacious it was, but my attention soon zeroed in on the food. Many of their Italian specialties are displayed inside or on top of the glass shelves, while the salad and sandwich menu is handwritten and hanging on the wall. -1x Large Romano Sandwich ($8.95): The sandwich was flavorful and made well with fresh ingredients, which all tasted great together. It's large enough to share with another person, which ended up being the case. Our sandwich came with soppressata, capicola, fresh mozz, roasted peppers, shredded lettuce, sliced tomatoes, and a tasty vinaigrette. -1x Truffle & Parm Chips ($2.25/ea): Great side to the sandwich. Each chip had a nice crisp to it and were the right thickness; they were also perfectly salted. Other chips available include spicy BBQ, salt and vinegar, and their regular homemade chips. -2x 4-Cheese Rice Balls and 2x Vodka Sauce Rice Balls (both $2.50/ea): I've never had Arancini before, so I went ahead and tried the two kinds available. The exterior was crispy, while the middle of both rice balls was a molten core of rice and cheese (and vodka sauce for the other). We were given a container of marinara, which added extra flavor. While I love a few items on their menu, their Janelle salad is crack! It is the perfect blend of savory and sweet but not too overpowering. I am allergic to goat cheese so they swap it out with blue cheese and man is it YUMMY! I could eat this salad every day and never get tired of it. Their homemade Italian vinaigrette is so good. As for their sandwiches, I get a custom grilled chicken with fresh mozzarella and roasted peppers with balsamic glaze that is delish! Their Italian BLT is also good when you want to indulge, however it can be a on the salty side. Those homemade chips by the front door make a great compliment to anything on the menu. Definitely worth visiting if you haven't. Prices are fair for the quality you get. A small is very satisfying. I always end up saving half my sandwich to eat later. Maybe we arrived late and all the good food was gone?? Best thing we bought was the fresh mozzarella. It was fresh, creamy and delish. Everything else? Not good. Roasted peppers- the seeds were never removed and they were very bland. Broccoli rabe- slathered in garlic and tasteless, although cooked properly and tender. Macaroni salad- average, could have been purchased at the local grocery store. Rice balls- heavily breaded and had absolutely no flavor. He's basically the kind of person that makes the restaurant business awesome. His wait staff doesn't lay far behind-everyone always has a smile, learns your name and the way you like your food prepared! The food is no joke-from salads to sandwiches, just delicious. Everything tastes fresh and homemade. I love the Janelle salad-little tip: switch out the goat cheese for feta and it's betta! (Please say this is Linda Belcher's voice). The Asian salad-try having it with arugula instead of the lettuce & try it with shrimp if you're feeling bold-you'll thank me. Absolutely try the BLT if you like them. This is made with prosciutto and geeeze. So yum. The eggplant Parmesan, the zucchini cakes and the zucchini roll up-try these if you're in the mood for something a little heavier and comforting. And THE OLIVES. HAVE THE OLIVES. They're so addicting, I'm having them every day and for my coworkers hooked on them-one didn't even like olives before that! If you have a sweet tooth, you must have one of their little Oreo or Tiramisu desserts in the individual cups. The only bad thing about them is that there isn't more in that little cup! I will start by saying that I am big on supporting local businesses. A few months back I went to Constantinos to get a sandwich, I arrived 25 to 30 minutes prior to closing, however the crew was in the process of cleaning. When I asked for a sandwich, the guy looked at me like I had 5 heads, walked over to the back kitchen area and I overheard the owner say "Just tell him we don't have anymore bread". I walked out without any issue. After that experience I honestly did not return to Constantinos for 2-3 years. This week I decided to be the bigger person and give them another try. I walked in asking for a sandwich, again the guy looked at me like I had 5 heads, the guy was startled and just said "We don't have anymore bread". He was cleaning about an hour prior to closing so I believe he just did not want to get things dirty since he started the cleaning process. I will never go back to this business. Sandwiches are good, however the best sandwich spots in the area are Mr. Subs, Union Subs and Mossimo's in Kenilworth. I defaulted to Constantinos simply because I am in that area often. Their customer service is not good, and they lie to their customers about not having bread when they simply are cleaning despite the fact that they're still open for business. I will never return to this location especially since we have a lot of other sandwich spots in the area that are actually better. My advice to the owner's of Constantinos, treat your customers good, don't lie to your customers, we are able to hear what is being said despite the fact that you are trying to be discrete, and stop using "not having bread" as an excuse when you actually do have bread. read more
