I love Andersen's. I live a few blocks away, and probably visit this place once a week or so, so my toddler can visit his animal friends. Everyone is so nice, even when we're just window shopping - and employees are always friendly and helpful when I do need to purchase something. I've purchased bird feeders and food; dog accessories, food and treats; and I have always been happy with their prices and my purchases. I also have my Pomeranian/Chihuahua groomed here. They do a fantastic job, and the price point is actually lower than the other places in LA that I have gone. No matter what my question, or need - I always feel like I am being accommodated. read more

Always very friendly staff (you can tell they genuinely care for all types of animals). They sell quality products and are always well stocked. We are usually in and out in just a few minutes. Great location with good parking. They also assist if you need help loading your car. Excellent food is also close by (within a couple blocks). I'm usually known for my nasty negative reviews but I have nothing but praise for this pet shop. I came in here looking for a birthday present for my mother. I picked out a beautiful stainless steel cage and a bird and asked if I could pick them up in a few days. One of the owners (I assume) said it was fine. I went in yesterday and decided to exchange the cage because I felt that it was too small and the lady was more than happy to accommodate me. It turns out my mother wanted a bigger budgie so we stopped in and they gladly exchanged birds with us. Everyone in the shop was very helpful and their birds are of good quality. This is a great gem in Montrose and I would highly recommend it to everyone! :) Cheers! read more

This pet shop has a lot of great & healthy pet products. I come here to get raw goats milk for my puppy (he loves it) I like that they offer a lot of healthy treat options for my baby. The only downside is their grooming options, they are very pricey --- and very basic. They don't really offer any special grooming packages, so their prices for grooming really aren't worth it. All in all though, it is a good pet shop for basic needs, like toys, treats, food, etc. read more

Overall, I like the small town feel of a pet shop. However, this place can be a hit or miss when it comes to a friendly staff. Sometimes they seem friendly and other times not so much. The prices are a little high. But I still like Andersen's and will still go in and look at the fun stuff they have in their that the larger chain stores don't have. I should also mention the grooming staff always looks at me like I have just asked them to sign their lives over to me. Geez, I asked how much for a nail clipping and the male answered me in an angry tone. $12. The vet charges $10 and Petco I believe is only $5. read more

DO NOT GET YOUR BIRD GROOMED HERE. For almost 4 years I've been a visitor of Anderson's Pet Shop. Finally, last Christmas, my mom purchased me an English Budgie from their shop. After about two months, he had settled in and was eating, drinking water, climbing his ladder, singing, and acting as a happy bird would. In June, we noticed that his nails and wings were growing out. We called Anderson's and asked if we should come in to get him groomed; They said yes and set up an appointment for us to bring him in. When we brought him in, I was more than comfortable with letting one of the employees groom him, as I knew that this particular employee has been working at Anderson's for a very long time. We left while the bird was getting groomed and returned 15-20 minutes later to pick him up. The employee told us that our bird was one of the sweetest birds he's groomed, so we assumed everything went well. We took him home and placed him on one of the perches of his cage, only for him to immediately fall to the bottom. After inspecting him, I noticed that his wings were cut strangely and sloppily. On top of that, his toe was bent weird, pink, and swollen. His toe was broken, as he could move other toes on the same foot, but not that one. Our bird refused to stand on that foot due to the broken toe and would not perch. We contacted Anderson's about his toe and the employee that groomed him got upset and denied any chance that he may have caused the bird's injury. I was a little suspicious about the way the employee reacted to my accusations, but I let it be and researched ways to heal my bird. Luckily, birds' toes heal pretty quickly, and after a month of special care for my bird, his toe was better and he was beginning to act normal again. He started climbing again, perching, singing, until about 3 months later. Around late September, my bird starting acting strange again. He's not a biter, but he bit me very hard a couple of times during the strange mood he was in. I noticed that his wings weren't growing out at all, which is strange considering his wings grew out pretty quickly initially. His wings were cut too short, and because of it, he appeared to have gotten an infection. He grew sick, sleeping almost all the day away, not opening his eyes, not eating/drinking, his color began to fade, and he was hiding at the bottom corner of the cage. I researched things I could do to help him, gave him treats/snacks to interest him in eating, and rubbed the back of his neck to calm him (he always enjoyed being pet behind his head). This morning, however, I went to uncover my bird (I cover his cage overnight while he's sleeping) and discovered him lying dead at the bottom of the cage. Anderson's employees don't know how to clip the bird's wings and it will likely cause an infection if they are trimmed incorrectly. Due to just one employee's incompetence and inexperience, my bird died. I apologize for the long explanation, but it was so unfair that my bird had to suffer an illness and die so early in his life. I have no others words than: do not trust Anderson's Pet Shop with your bird. read more

Great team and very caring. They really love their job and all the animals

Really nice people, they made sure I had everything I needed to take my new hamster home. They let me pet the hamsters and gave background on where they came from and how old they were, including their life span. Their Syrian hamsters (teddy bear hamsters) cost a bit more than at other pet stores (petco , pet smart) but I think that it is worth it because my hamster is really friendly. The man told me that they were hand raised which is probably why they were so relaxed and chill. I would defiantly recommend going here and checking the place out yourself. It has its own parking which is great because parking on that street is pretty crowded sometimes. Also their rewards program is really helpful. If you give them your email they will send things like ' 3 dollars off a purchase of $30 or more ' or something similar which was helpful for me because we saved about 5 bucks while buying everything I needed for my new pet. Great spot for hard to find items for your pets. My wife and I got a Great Dane a few months ago and had him on a pretty popular brand of food, but after feeding it to him for two months, the company changed their recipe and it wreaked havoc on our pups stomach. Great Danes, like a lot or Large/Giant Breeds, need a food with low calcium and phosphorus levels to help with their naturally quick growth. We had struggled to find a food that we thought would work for him, but Andersen's carries Fromm, a great brand that isn't available in the local big chain stores or on popular websites. I spoke with the woman who was working the cash register and she also made sure to sign me up for Fromm's rewards program, so I can cash in on my free bag of food after purchasing 12 bags. Now I call in a week before it's time to restock and they always put two bags on hold for me and for our blue Dane Jameson. Great shop. read more

The cleanest, friendliest pet store I've been to in LA. This place has an awesome (and expensive) finch selection as well as a decent variety of all household pets --i got my hamster here and he's very healthy. On weekends dog rescues come and try to find adoptees in the parking lot. read more

This pet shop is very close to our house. We had to get rid of our cat due to allergies and many people with children recommended a bunny. You can train them to go potty in a box, they are so loving, they play with toys, etc. $300 later we were driving him home from Andersons. The bunny was very very mean from the start, but I knew that they could feel a little intimidated in a new place so I did some heavy research on bunny bonding. I was home after a surgery with nothing to do but read and knit for almost three months and spent hours every day with it in a quiet house gently waiting for it to approach me, giving it toys, appropriate chewing treats and quiet training activities. At the end of three months we still were not able to pet it or go near it and it was so mean that it would run full speed and jump as high as it could to bite people on the legs. If it jumped on the couch, anyone that was sitting on the couch would scatter in fear of being attacked. My first job was at a pet store in La Crescenta. I worked there for over 2 years and had a lot of contact with all of the animals and met many of the breeders that supplied the store. There are only three scenarios to explain this situation: Bad breeder, bad pet store or both. I wrote them a lengthy letter and if course they ignored me. I strongly discourage anyone from purchasing live animals here. read more

Unlike my high school Spanish teacher, I prefer to "round up" the number of stars when splitting hairs. This would preferably get 2.5 stars. Why? It would get 2 if it weren't for the ONE young follicular-challenged man who was helpful and friendly. The dog grooming was average (actually a friendly reminder was needed to get the Frontline administered last second) and nobody gave us either a greeting or good-bye. Why patronize a mom-and-pop store anyway? Petco and PetSmart assure that standard friendly service and don't have owner which seem to need a bite of their store mascot's Prozac-and-bits 'cuz a downer attitude in a slumping economy won't be what turns around your business. Prices are a bit high but there's nothing to make you feel special and want to return to this place...unless they turn into a charity and you can get a write-off. read more

I went here last week, and the staff is really friendly. I love that they have a parking lot too. I haven't taken my puppy to get groomed there, but the prices seem to be quite reasonable ($38 for a schnauzer cut). So maybe I will in the future! They have a great selection of pet food also. But it's a bit disorganized in there, so I had to ask for the price of a bag of food because it wasn't listed on the product or on the shelf. read more

This is a pretty nice pet store. Despite being open on a limited schedule, the quality and selection of pet supplies seem to me (a dog and cat owner) to be pretty nice. The main reason I like them is the pet adoptions they hold. One day when I was 10, my mom and I were walking down Honolulu, and we saw this dog they had in a cage out front of Andersen's. We ended up getting him thanks to the adoption drive they held, and that dog became my best friend! My pup had a huge positive impact on me growing up, and I just wanted to thank Andersen's for making that possible. It's great they help animals find their forever homes; if only there were more stores that did as much. read more

Last weekend, my friends and I went on a hike with my dog, Cal. After the hike, we decided to go to breakfast on Honolulu and bring Cal along. Well, it was a bit chilly out & Cal, being a shorthaired dog, was cold. We decided to go over to Andersen's to see if we could find Cal a sweater. Not only did we find the perfect fleece sweater for Cal, but the owners were very helpful in the process of selecting the product and having Cal try it on. Moreover, Cal loved the complimentary doggie treats and samples. We will definitely be back. :) read more

Andersen's is definitely a high quality pet store. I live nearby so it's extremely convenient. Their prices are pretty high compared to large, chain pet stores, but they're independently owned and I enjoy supporting them! I buy all food for my two cats and dog from Andersen's as they carry a large array of healthy, natural food and employees will always help you choose which type is best for your pet, (they even gave my dog a yummy treat on-the-house last time, and helped me out to my car). The owner has been extremely helpful to me several times, and I can tell he really does care about the well-being of his customer's pets. For instance, when it was discovered that Science Diet's food (which was manufactured in China) was contaminated he stopped carrying it and won't carry it to this day. He's willing to stock the store with food that is a little more expensive, for the health and safety of our animals (though it's not THAT pricey). The few times I bought any accessories (leashes, toys, etc) here I realized the price was a little too high and I now go to Petco for these kinds of items. Long story short: Buy your pet food here, anything else that doesn't affect your pet's health you can buy at a large pet supply store for less. I fell in love with my cockatiel here. She's dancing and walking back and fourth in the glass cage every time she sees me. She's the most friendliest of all! I talked to the lady and she told me that the cockatiel is raised by the staff (owner, maybe). A cockatiel can't be that affectionate if he/she does not receive unlimited love and attention! I've got a cage with the cockatiel, and the lady helped me carry the cage to the parking lot a block away. Yes, the prices might be a little higher than a bigger chain store, but people should know it's worth it to keep places like Andersen's around for everyone to enjoy. The staff is very friendly and will answer your questions, some more readily than others depending on how busy they are at the moment. I've come in with different questions about all sorts of animals and they have always struck me as not only knowledgeable but concerned for the pets as well, I have a feeling they want to make sure their pets are going to homes that have done their research. (So do your research! There are lots of pets out there looking for a good home!) One of the co-owners(?) runs the Glendale Humane Society, I believe - so they really do care about animals. It's not just a business so much as a community-invoved neighborhood gem. I like to pop in with my kids on Sundays during the Farmers Market and talk about the animals and see all the different sections. And it's a great place to just grab a quick bag of birdseed for your backyard feeder! :D read more

My dogs really furry and I've been to 3 other groomers before this and they always end up shaving him even though I say not to. Frank will keep your doggy cute! We bought a cockatiel that was hand-raised by the owner, Tom. We started visiting the bird when it was just a few weeks old (too young to come home) and about a month later brought it home. The bird is exceptionally friendly, calm and very good with people - even our 3 year old (who doesn't get to be alone with it, of course). We visited several other big chain and privately owned pet shops in the area and Anderson's is by far the best place for birds that have been properly raised and cared for. No overcrowding, very clean cages, the birds get lots of handling and there's plenty of room for flight in the aviary. We spoke with different employees during various visits and they were all knowledgeable and helpful. I agree the store is busy so you can't always get someone to help you the moment you want them. However, this is a *good* sign, not a bad one. I'd much rather go to a store where I wait my turn while the qualified, long-time staff help the person before me than get instant service from the kid making minimum wage at the Pet Smart. read more
