Service was great, and the food was delicious. We started off with the calamari and I had the spinach stuffed ravioli in Alfredo sauce with chicken. It was the best dish out of everyone's meal. The portions are huggggggggeeeee. Two people can easily share one entree and still have some left over. I'm giving the place 4 stars because of the limited space. Seating is cramped, and they had us seated in the back right next to a station where they prepare desserts and coffee, and near the restrooms. Tried to get moved, but they said they had the rest of the place reserved for a larger party. Not the most fun when you're trying to eat but have other people's elbows in your face. We had the calamari to start and it was delicious, tasted so fresh and fried to perfection- a bit on the spicier side cause of the peppers but it gave the dish great taste. We had made reservations at the front table (best seat in the house!) however a party was taking a long time at the table when we arrived and they offered to seat us elsewhere. Andino's is an establishment in Providence, which is steeped in Italian cuisine. I'm from Philly, which is also a mecca of Italian food, so I am a tough critic. My son and I were in Providence for an ice hockey tournament, so when in Rome right!? I rated Andino's on two factors: the food and the service. I gave the food 4 stars. We ordered calamari, chicken parmigiana and chicken marsala. The calamari was delicious - mixed with pickled jalapenos and served with homemade marinara. The calamari was golden brown and crispy. My son had the chicken parmigiana which was served with vegetables and potatoes. He loved it. The chicken was lightly fried and smothered with homemade marinara and cheese. I had the chicken marsala which was served with penne with pesto sauce. The marsala was well balanced and the pesto was unique in that it was a mix of olive oil and leafy basil and parsley. The only reason I didn't give the food a five is because my dish was lacking in salt, so it was kind of bland. The portions are huge and you definitely won't leave Andino's hungry. Now, the service I gave 2 stars not because there was anything wrong with the service per se, but it wasn't particularly friendly. It felt very transactional. When I go to a restaurant, I want it to feel warm and welcoming. I didn't get that vibe from Andino's. Maybe it was an off night. I know that restaurants are going through a tough time right now with staff, but the service is a big part of the experience of going out (or maybe that's a thing of the past). My meal was delicious! I had the chicken Marsala and loved every bite. I got it with carrots and a potato and the carrots were hard as a rock, oh well. My dad had the chicken parm and it was cold. Trust me I tried it. We didn't feel like complaining because the sauce was hot, but the chicken under it must have been made in batches because it was ice cold. Upsetting for a $22 plate. My wife and I have been to many restaurants in the past 20 years. Yesterday, we were fortunate that Andino was doing take out during these difficult times. We got the chicken parm and it was the best I have ever had. Usually, I would not eat a portion that large, but it was so good I could not help myself. The bar and restaurant were beautiful. I got to meet the owner and he was extremely nice and he showed me the wonderful outdoor patio. He informed me he has a valet parking across the street. Wow. Called 10:40am. On Saturday February 28, women answered the phone. We will NEVER eat at this place because of her phone etiquette. Rude rude rude. I asked her "are you serving right now?" Stop acting like your from Jersey. Really it's pathetic. This was the one place we wanted to try on this dumpy hill... *the response from the person who did this is TOTAL NONSENSE. We have a new favorite Italian restaurant. It's called Andino's. We had just had an "Uhhhh... not happening" experience at another place up the street. We left there before being served, and the difference between that kitchen nightmare and Andino's was night and day. Upon entering, the hostess smiled and greeted us as if she'd been expecting us. We got a seat by the window, and enjoyed the enthusiastic Valentine's decorations while we got settled. Our waitress' timing was impeccable, she was charming and engaging, and had us convinced of a drink special almost immediately. The mango bellini - so good! The menus were clean to the touch and very manageable. Only a short deliberation was needed, and soon our "appetizers" (I use that term loosely, at least in my case) arrived. A cup of beef stew for my boyfriend, and for me a platter of fried calamari with pickled hot peppers. It could have fed an army, and they would have loved every bite. I made a small dent but lamented getting an appetizer, especially since we had just admonished ourselves the night before for the same mistake. The calamari and the stew, aside from being delectable, were the perfect temperature. Our entrees came shortly thereafter. These were not human-sized entrees. I wonder what genus of giant dines here on the regular, because they obviously expect large stomachs to be parked at their tables. My dish of gnocchi in pink sauce was a stadium of deliciousness. The gnocchi were tender, almost melting in my mouth, and the sauce had such a fresh, creamy tomato taste that I almost died in my chair. Five bites later and I had to stop myself to be able to walk home. My boyfriend's Ferdinand al fredo with peas, bacon, and prosciutto was a delight. He also stopped himself after a couple bites, and we both struggled to finish his beer. Why four stars? I have a hard time complaining about a generous plate of food, but we could have spent even less ($65 for dinner for two is really not bad) and gotten portions we still would have been more than happy with. I am not exaggerating when I say that I have 4 meals leftover between my appetizer and my entree. That being said, I'll say this: Andino's is a shining jewel, a shrine at which to worship Italian food in the heart of Providence's Little Italy. Bueno. Bueno. Bueno. I am an idiot. I can not believe that I have lived in Rhode Island for nine (count 'em, 9) years and have never been to Andino's on Federal Hill. This place is old school charm, ambience with just enough rat-pack flavor mixed with an amazing red sauce that is perhaps the best I have ever tasted. Calamari, friend mozzarella, fried ravioli followed by a light salad then chicken parm and tiramisu. The chianti was flowing. What a terrific time. Let me start off by saying I really like the food at Andino's but the service tonight was bad. Our waitress was not friendly, she was actually quite rude. The dinner service started out alright but after our food arrived (by another waiter) she never asked us if we needed anything else or how are food was instead we had to ask another waiter for utensils, plates and extra cheese. She later removed the Parmigiano cheese from our table without asking us. She moved in so quickly we didn't have time to protest! I was shocked because we were not done using it. On top of that our drinks were never refilled. Her whole demeanor made us feel uncomfortable and it really put a damper on our evening meal. I don't think she wanted to be there. Neither did we... I'm not sure if we will come back after this experience as we were quite embarrassed in front of our friend from out of town (Texas). I wrote the waitress a note to inform her nicely that she was not friendly but I wish I made her a short list of all the things she did wrong. Andino's was the second restaurant I've been to on the Hill and it was just as amazing as the first. I started with a sangria to drink, it was strong and I could tell it was homemade. We ordered toasted raviolis for an appetizer and I had the Saltimbocca for an entree. It was the first time I've ever had Saltimbocca and it was incredible. It is now, easily, in my top 5 list of favorite dishes of all time. We finished with tiramisu, which was just as amazing as all of the other food. FOOD: I've been to Andino's many times and it is my favorite restaurant in all Providence. Their Italian food is excellent. You know you are in for a treat when your bread is served with olive oil instead of butter. My favorite dish here is the chicken parmigiana because they have mastered the challenging task of creating a crispy batter for the chicken, a flavorful inside, and cooking it appropriately so that the tomato sauce penetrates fully. They also add a layer of fresh mozzarella to the exterior of it which goes great. Every other dish I've ordered has been prepared with similar attention to detail. Their pasta is dry (not watery). Everything here is first rate. 5/5 SERVICE: Restaurant service has generally been good when I've gone here. Wait staff are very professional, and don't make mistakes, and when they do they apologize quickly and fix the situation. The only downside is the parking in the area (Federal Hill is very crowded), but not to worry...Andino's provides valet parking so nothing to worry about. However they can get crowded so you will need reservations around dinner times otherwise they cannot accomodate you. But if you get in, it's great. 5/5 AMBIENCE: Very nice, traditional, elegant restaurant decor. My one complaint is that some of the tables in the main dining area, it is very dark after the sun goes down. If you can go to the back to the patio, it is wise to do so for a more fun filled ambience, but the main restaurant is more elegant, and possibly even romantic too. 4/5 PRICE/VALUE: Andino's is surprisingly not that expensive if you do not order wine or other fineries. If you do, however, it is easy to run up a high bill, but you will not worry about it much once you are rubbing your stomach with satisfaction. Their chicken parmagiana is a slice of heaven. Also be sure to try their calamari, you will enjoy that as well. I rated them "spendy" because I think one does not go here to just get a main course and that's it. Doing so is short changing yourself a great dining experience. 4/5. Decided to give this place a try as I had seen a few positive reviews and our favorite place to eat in the area had a very long wait. We were seated fairly quickly and the service was adequate. Started with the fried mozzarella which was soggy and just average. Moved on to the Cavatelli with red sauce" which was also pretty average. I did not finish it because I found out quickly that their "red sauce" is really not a true marinara or pomodoro sauce because it had MEAT in it. That's right, the waiter told us that none of the pasta dishes which would traditionally be considered vegetarian actually are. There is basically one sauce in the entire restaurant that is considered vegetarian and it was a disgusting mess of oil, herbs and tomatoes. I could barely eat three bites of it when they brought that as a replacement to the "meat" marinara sauce. Aside from the fact that this restaurant was incapable of producing a marinara sauce without meat in it, I would say the food reminded me of run of the mill fare that you would get from an Italian chain restaurant. read more

We went for a late lunch to Andino's & loved it! What we had: Bacala salad (salted cod fish salad) Fried calmari with hot peppers Hot antipasto (with clams casino, clams genevese, & stuffed portabella mushrooms) Cheese tortellini with pink sauce & portabella mushrooms Eggplant parmigiana with ziti The bacala salad was interesting- a bit salty & tough for our taste & we probably would not get it again. But the calamari made up for it. I get fried calamari almost anytime I see it on the menu & this was among some of the best I've ever had. There was way too much though, even for our party of three The hot anitpasto was also great & the clams weren't overly breaded, but the clams genovese was pretty garlicky. Finally, the entree's: delicious! Again, A LOT of food. We split two plates between 3 people and still took most of it home. The eggplant is also a favorite of mine & it was cooked to perfection here by not being too greasy, dry, soggy or over-breaded. For dessert we had a pineapple sorbet which was a great pallet cleanser. And to top it off, out waiter, Scott was a dream- outgoing & attentive. This would be a fabulous place for a date, especially during the holidays because of the Christmas lights and greens they have around the restaurant. Andino's is fantastic -- after my most recent visit to Providence it is easily my favorite restaurant in Federal Hill. I visited twice, both times for lunch. The atmosphere and the service is totally friendly. The first time I visited (late lunch on a Tuesday), the bar area was unexpectedly packed by a bunch of old guys talking loudly about their golf games and cars. The second time (early lunch on a Saturday), the bar area was packed by young guys recovering from hang-overs. Maybe the latter group will one day become the former? Probably. The fried mozzarella is delicious, although the portions are huge. I would recommend tackling this with at least three people. I also tried the linguini with anchovies (healthy amounts of garlic and olive oil), and a house chicken dish with loads of tomatoes. The complimentary bread is served with an olive oil side that's probably more garlic and seasoning than olive oil (which is a good thing!). Hard not to eat a whole basket by myself. I'd definitely recommend Andino's for a Federal Hill lunch or dinner. There are plenty of large tables, but the bigger groups all had reservations, it seems. The best part of the meal was the olive oil with red pepper and garlic dip with the bread. I had the calamari which was ok. No crisp though. Then the ziti with sausage came out. That was the worst part of my meal. Perhaps I order the wrong thing on the menu. The pasta was too soft. The sausage was very dry. How do you mess up sausage?! Meatballs? Correction: meatball. Singular. Tasty and flavorful, but I would have enjoyed a couple or a few. Prices on the lunch menu wasn't terrible. It ranged between $8-$17. I'm grieving over the mango sorbet. For $9, that was basically the price of my lunch plate, was the worst sorbet I've ever had. For $9, I expected fresh, rich, smooth and creamy. My friend and I decided to try out Andino's for lunch and let me tell you how much of a mistake it was. I was very disappointed and as was my friend. We were both excited to try it since they had very good reviews. I ordered Linguini with Clam Sauce and Chicken Escrow Soup. My friend ordered the Fettuccine Alfredo. She says her entree was decent, but it wasn't very good. My soup was enjoyable, I loved that, which is the reason why I'm giving this 2 stars instead. My pasta was disgusting. The clams were super chewy and I couldn't take more than 2 bites since I was scared I would get food poisoning. The entire entree was so bland. I asked for lemon and added more salt, pepper, and crushed red pepper and it ended up okay, but I still couldn't get over the clam chewiness and ultimately gave up. The service wasn't the best either. Lauren was not very attentive and it was honestly disappointing. If the food was bad, the least you could do is have some good service. Ultimately, it felt like we weren't even taken care of. Lauren never asked us how we were or anything and the hostess (at least we assume she was the hostess) had to come and ask us if we wanted our food wrapped up. I found that to be super frustrating, why can't our waitress just be more attentive? Overall, we have decided to never go back and would prefer something else on the Hill. No real complaints about the food - classic Italian fare, nothing really different than what you find on every menu in Federal Hill. My big problem with Andino's is the extortion you get charged if you make any substitutions. Went there last night and switched out the normal pasta for cavatelli. To be fair, the waitress did say there would be an additional charge for that and I said "ok", but I thought it would be only a couple of dollars. Turns out it was an extra 8.95. On top of that, I missed the fine print on the menu regarding substituting sauces, and the waitress didn't mention it when we all went with something different than the marinara and by doing so added another $16 to the bill. So, I'll take some of the ownership, but the prices to make the switch are highway robbery - just a lame way to make some extra money of their unsuspecting customers. read more

There are so many wonderful options on Federal Hill for a good Italian meal. You can't go wrong with a trip to Andino's. I definitely recommend getting a reservation and if it's a nice night, requesting to be seated on their outdoor patio. We love their calamari and their pastas always have wonderful sauces. Every time I have been here, I've received wonderful service from the valet, host, server, manager, etc. On our most recent trip my indecisive husband decided he wanted to make his own pasta dish (adding sausage, onions, peppers and melted cheese to a dish of penne) and they were more than accommodating with his request.
