Saw this place on and the great reviews on here and figured we'd give it a shot 2 hours before a hockey game in Providence. When we walked in, it was quiet--3 full tables. We sat down, looked at our menus, and about 10-15 mins later we got our waters. When we ordered our food, I asked if they had capellini for my Chicken Francese. Our waitress responded, "No, we don't, but the closest thing we have to it is linguini...but we also have angel hair, penne, and spaghetti." I was a bit confused; capellini is much closer to angel hair than linguini! Same with spaghetti! Brushed it off and my BF ordered a chicken piccata. Couldn't help but notice that the 4 people behind us (who were there before us) didn't order their drinks or food until about 10-15 mins after us, but they got their food 35 mins BEFORE us (we actually started keeping track, we were there for 45-50 mins at this point). We got our food and my boyfriend was very confused because they delivered a chicken Marsala instead of his chicken Piccata; I didn't even notice. He only orders chicken piccata from one other place, so it took him a minute to realize what he had been served... he tried it, thinking that we could just wrap up our experience since we were already running late, took 2 bites and said it wasn't something he liked so he put it at the end of the table. Unfortunately, I had already finished my meal by the time the waitress came over to check on us. No apology for messing up his order, but a, "oh, would you enjoy this?" My boyfriend was stunned. The piccata came out 15-20 mins after this interaction. I enjoyed my chicken Francese and he enjoyed his picatta. Luckily, our shrimp cocktail and peroni were comp'd but I'm not sure why they couldn't just take the meal off at that point -- it was like $4 extra for something that we didn't order in the first place. We were about 30 mins late to the game that we planned well ahead for. Maybe it was a bad night, but this was not a good first impression. TLDR: Service was horrible, food was good. read more

Eat Like You've Got an Italian Grandma So here's the scene: my buddy's in town, I'm the new kid in Providence trying to make friends (and avoid cooking), and we somehow stumble into Anthony's Authentic Italian Cuisine -- a small, cozy little gem tucked into Federal Hill that smells like heaven and olive oil had a baby. Our server, Mina, deserves her own Michelin star. She was patient, funny, and treated our table like we were her long-lost cousins. My buddy -- who is basically a professional food snob -- grilled her with menu questions like he was interviewing for "Top Chef." She answered every one like a pro. He went with the chicken alfredo and practically gave it a standing ovation. Said it was "light years ahead" of what he's had anywhere else. I mean, I half expected him to ask for a passport just to move into the kitchen. I had the shrimp scampi, and when Mina brought it out, it was steaming hot and smelled like angels had just sautéed garlic themselves. The flavor? Incredible. My only complaint? I only got three shrimp, and when they were gone, my pasta felt lonely. (I literally whispered, "I miss you" to my last shrimp.) Then Mina found out we'd never had a cannoli -- and without hesitation, she brought two to the table like a dessert fairy godmother. They were crispy, creamy, sweet-but-not-too-sweet perfection. The bathroom? Small but spotless -- which honestly tells you everything you need to know about how much they care. Bottom line: 5 stars for Mina, 5 stars for flavor, and 100 stars for making me feel like I belong in Providence already. The ambiance of the restaurant is small but cozy. Dimly lit so nice for a date night. Our waitress Mina was amazing and very kind. I went with her recommendation of the shrimp scampi with a replacement of Alfredo sauce and it was absolutely delicious and just what I was looking for with angel hair pasta and creamy rich sauce. Everything is made fresh so it does take a little while after ordering to actually get your food but it well worth the wait. The reheat value for the pasta is actually pretty good as well as the sauce doesn't separate when reheating. This is my new go to spot for pasta in providence. Great place to stop for lunch. Parking was easy as they have their own lot. For 17.99 you get a large salad or cup of soup, a main dish and a dessert. This place has been at the end of Federal Hill forever. We finally got here! We came a little early for dinner, since we didn't have reservations, and didn't know if we'd actually need them. There is a small, tight parking lot on the side of the building, as well as on street parking. This is a small restaurant, with a huge bar on one side, and tables on the other. We were offered outdoor dining, but opted to sit inside. Our server, Alessandra, was awesome, calm, and easy going. As the restaurant filled up, Alessandra and the only other waitress we saw took care of the entire restaurant! There was the bartender, too, even though Alessandra made my drink! That, was delicious! Limoncello Spritz! We started with a special appetizer of stuffed zucchini flowers. They were delicious, and so was the sauce they were sitting on. What was disappointing was that there were only 3 flowers in the order, and 1 was pretty small. They were pricey for 3 flowers. For dinner, I ordered chicken Capri with homemade pappardelle pasta. I thought that the chicken, made with artichokes and red roasted peppers, was delicious. It would have been nice to have more of the peppers, tho. The pasta was a bit gummy, like it needed another minute to cook. It was a bit bland in the wine sauce the chicken was cooked in. Next time, I would get it with red sauce. My husband had the chicken Parm, which he said was good - pounded and cooked crispy. Just enough cheese. He would have preferred more sauce. He had rigatoni pasta with it. I recently dined here with my family and had the perfect dinner. The ambiance was great, just how I like- quiet, peaceful, beautifully decorated with warm hues and neatly set tables. The staff was very friendly and our waitress friendly, warm, prompt. We had fresh bread with roasted garlic and olive oil to start. We had salad which was delicious, fresh baby spinach with the perfect compliment of shredded veggies for color. The house Italian dressing was so good- I say this bc I usually don't order Italian dressing but here I will- it was light, freshly acetic with a hint of sweetness. The entreés came promptly hot and smelled delicious. I chose the chicken piccata which melted in my mouth. Just the right amount of capers with the light buttery lemon white wine- yes perfect for dunking my fresh Italian bread in. My side of penne alla vodka was hot, just perfectly fresh basil cooked aldente with a not-heavy pink sauce that smelled sooo good I could've just eaten that for dinner. My Mom chose the chicken francais which she said was delicious. She also enjoyed her freshly sauteed green beans and creamy buttery red bliss mashed potatoes. My son chose the steak which he devoured and said it was the best steak he ever had. My husband who can eat for hours, enjoyed the salad (finished mine), had veal parm which came out hot and perfectly plated and disappeared quickly. He also enjoyed a side of ravioli which was the perfect side for him. The dishes were quite large with the portion sizes very generous. Also the beverages were served ice cold in large glasses which I prefer which minimizes the number of refills. Now my favorite part- dessert- I am very picky about my chocolate mousse. It was decadent served in a large dessert glass and perfectly stuck to my spoon when held upside down. Yes I notice these things but moreso, the taste- perfectly chocolate with that bittersweet hint of what? Idk, I think it may be strong coffee or espresso- the perfect consistency- not creamy like pudding, not fluffy like whipped cream, not cakey, perfectly airy-dense leaving your tongue wanting more and more. The Spumoni was very tasty too. Our waitress was so sweet and checked on us to make sure we had everything we wanted throughout our meal. Everyone needs to come here to eat- so many choices on the menu and easy to find- across from Holy Ghost Church. I loved the chicken escarole soup, full of vegetables and pieces of white chicken meat in a savory broth, a bit salty for my taste, but I added some water and it was perfect. The Shrimp Fra Diavolo was really good. Three large jumbo shrimp pieces on a bed of pasta...I asked for the sauce on the side, since I don't like pasta too sauce nor too salty...the dish was really delicious and tasty. For dessert, I got a ball of cookies and cream ice cream...delish. Along with my meal, I got a glass of their house wine, a cabernet from Sycamore Lanes and I was pleasantly surprised at this inexpensive California winery that delivers a nice smooth and robust glass of wine. One of the many Italian restaurants in Fed Hill, Anthony's has a more laid back vibe and feels a little more family friendly, similar to Angelo's. The many has plenty of options, and the food is good. I had the gnocchi special in vodka sauce which was wonderful. They also have a decent selection of wine and cocktails, and have a few cans/bottles of beer but nothing on tap. The bartender was very friendly and attentive, although I did go on a particularly dead Monday night. I do think the prices are a little steep here, they seem to be more in line with the fancier places on the Hill. All in all, a good place to get Italian food on Fed Hill, especially if you're looking for a more relaxed atmosphere or to avoid the busiest part of Atwells. read more

This was our first time coming here and I have to say it was a great experience. The restaurant was quaint with a homey kind of feel. Also, food was phenomenal! We loved seeing fried smelts on the appetizer menu, made us think of growing up in our Italian households. My husband had the veal chop valdostana which was wonderful and I had the veal Marsala. Had not been to Anthony's for a number of years, but enjoyed the interaction with really wonderfully kind servers. It is quite a small restaurant and on a Friday evening, it was extremely busy and loud. Starting with a soup appetizer, my cup of chicken escarole was excellent and my husband loved his bowl of pasta fagioli. The entree of my choice was chicken piccata , chicken breast lightly coated in flour and sautéed in shallots, butter, lemon sauce, white wine and capers served with mashed potatoes and plain broccoli, was good but I should have chosen the Chicken Francese as that was egg-battered and would have been more to my liking. What was very good was the entree special my husband chose - lasagna filled with vegetables and covered in a bolognese sauce - it was quite novel. read more

We found this place through Yelp and we are so glad we did. We went twice in 3 weeks and it's an hour from where we live. We sat inside the first time and outside the second time. They have an adorable outside area along with a great singer! As for the food, don't pass up the stuffed artichoke appetizer. It is so tasty and is perfect for sharing. I got a tip the other day that the artichoke is the grandmother's recipe. Trust me, that woman knows what she was doing. We ordered different pasta meals that were very tasty and the presentation is done well. Very affordable bottles of wine which we partake in. They have their own parking area which is key on Federal Hill. It's not large but we've gotten a spot there both times. Now that I'm writing my review I want to go back and soon! We met our friends from Plymouth here as it's a good half-way point. I liked that the restaurant had its own parking lot which is a selling point on Federal Hill. We were the first ones to arrive at noon on a Wednesday. What a quaint place! Very authentic decor! We were seated by a most pleasant waitress who might also serve as bartender as that's where we found her. After being seated, we were immediately brought water and the menus. We were pleased to find that the weekday lunch specials offered choice of soup or salad, an entree, and a choice of desserts.... All for $17.95. Boom! I ordered the chicken escarole soup and I'm glad I did. It was delicious. Don had the pasta fagioli which he said tasted just like his mom's. Our friends ordered the salads which were enormous and looked fresh and crispy! We all liked our entrees. I had the shrimp fra diavolo. It was great though I shouldn't order red sauce out since it's always sweeter than I like. Don said the same about his bolognese. He enjoyed it but too sweet. The chicken Milanese and the fettuccini Alfredo were the way to go! The desserts were also generous and delicious. Choice of mini cannoli, which were freshly filled, and cookies and crème gelato which was so good! All were served with tiny Italian flags. We stayed over two hours and weren't hurried along at all. It was a very pleasant afternoon and I'd be happy to return another time. read more

This was the first restaurant we visited when we moved to Providence. The calamari we ordered as an appetizer sealed the deal - so fresh it made us think they were still out swimming that morning. They have a rotating risotto special - our favorite being the pesto seafood risotto, the mushroom chicken being a close second. We've tried a variety of their entrees, all delicious and good portion size. Service always pleasant, good recommendations from waitstaff.
