This place is legit! The pit beef might be my new favorite...perfectly cooked (still a little red in the juices) and with just a hit of fat to make it even tastier. Coleslaw was outstanding. Greens and beans were both excellent. Pulled pork and turkey were both flavorful as well. Oh, and the mustard, standard, and pig dip sauces were all fantastic as well!! My first time trying Andy Nelson and it didn't meet my expectations unfortunately. The Sides were pretty good for the most part, but the Ribs and the Beef Brisket were very underwhelming, and the meats are the most important part of the meal. They also forgot my Cornbread, but that's ok. The food wasn't worth the price imo, especially doing delivery. Since I did delivery, I'm not sure about the service, but I'm sure it's good, especially considering the reviews about service, and the ambiance is pleasant because of the location. where do I begin. probably one of my favorite southern food stops on the way to Towson university. Please sit outside you won't regret it. Whoever decorated the inside and outside sitting areas knew exactly what they were doing. Always wanted to try the #1 BBQ place in America. The inside was so cute albeit could use some cleaning on the ceiling tiles. The staff were nice and accommodating. A huge variety on the menu. I had the brisket tip sandwich with tater wedges and Mac n Cheese. There was no way you could call what I had tips. They were ginormous! It was way more than 6oz as advertised. The flavor was deep and meaty. I couldn't hardly make a dent. The tater wedges lacked any seasoning not even salt. Salt would have helped out tremendously. The Mac n cheese was a huge disappointment. The noodles were mush, cooked way too long. And again no flavor. I didn't taste cheese, milk or butter and no salt or pepper. The prices were fantastic I just wish the sides were better. I tried my wife's bbq chicken sandwich and that tasted delicious. The baked beans were too vinegary. The coleslaw was fine. This was a nice find while driving up to Lancaster. We enjoyed the wings as well as our sammies. The pulled pork was dry but they had good sauce options, I liked the hot sauce, hubs enjoyed the mustard based bbq. The mac n'cheese was good as was the coleslaw. Hubs enjoyed the potato wedges. It's an order and pick-up place with some seating. Menu is on chalk boards over the registers with a view of the food prep. Laidback, no frills. Yum! The Dry Rub Ribs are to die for! I'm a "slather it in all the sauce" kind of person and didn't need to do that because they were so flavorful. I mean, I still tried all the sauces, but honestly these ribs were just perfect as they were. The coleslaw and cornbread were really good too! The only thing I wouldn't order again were the beans - too much green pepper kind of killed them for me. Just not a fan of that flavor profile. It's a bare bones kind of place but I liked all the football memorabilia. Fun to read! The server behind the counter was kind of mean, but the guy working the tables was super nice, so I guess the service averages out to...average. Wow...it's been a while since we've been back. My wife and I stopped in Monday noontime to return a couple of large catering boxes from a birthday party our son hosted on Saturday and to pocket a $5.00 coupon for returning the boxes. The natural thing to do, of course, was to also get lunch and use the coupon. We did carry out. I went with one of my favorites, burnt tips and my wife, pulled pork. Both were sandwiches, but I just took the big chunks of beef and pulled them apart and ate them with the juice that came in the container. All pretty good, maybe a touch too much fat with them both...but good. Nothing else to add to my previous reviews, except to say there is no table service. read more

I've been to Andy Nelson's perhaps a dozen times over the last decade or so, but not since the pandemic before yesterday. My 2014 visit remains accurate. "... Walking into Andy Nelson's is like stepping onto the set of Diners, Drive-Ins and Dives. The host and crew of the show would leave happy and sated. The nouveau-riche, intellectually self-impressed and well-dressed may feel a tad out of place by the exceedingly casual decor and aesthetic. The place is not for them, for it lacks tablecloths and other trappings of fine dining. If you like to wipe your greasy and sauce-covered hands on your own sweatshirt and jeans, however, Andy's is for you...." I would not change one word of my description of the ambience. As for the food itself, usually I order "Sammies" (i.e., sandwiches) and often the "express", which adds two sides and a drink. In 2014, I wrote that "... The down-home southern cooking is nothing short of delectable, the menu represents both diversity and value, and service is excels in its prompt perfection...." On this most recent visit, my wife ordered the brisket tips, which seemed tasty but tougher than expected. My pit beef sandwich was perfection as always. I ordered the baked beans and collard greens. Don't turn your nose up at the collards - Andy makes them yummily caloric. Sandwich fixin's are minimal: horseradish, raw onions and an assortment of sauces. You can have any kind of bread you want, as long as its hamburger rolls. Be prepared to carry your own platter back to your picnic table, and to bus your own dishes. Certainly an experience not to be missed, but I'm withholding a star because in 2024 I want more, fresher and sturdier, bread choices, more fixin's, and more tender brisket tips. Been awhile, eh Andy? I was supposed to meet a buddy for some music but have, to this point, been ghosted. Well, live music put on hold due to rain. So, I ventured inside to order and eat. There two Nelson's team members taking orders in the counter area. Kinda hot in there. Karen S took my order. She's very pleasant, poised and professional. I had meat on my more specifically, pit beef. I ordered the jumbo pit beef Sammie and decided to go EXPRESS and got two sides (incomparable Mac n cheese and baked beans) and a fountain drink for just six bucks more. What a score! I ate in the dining room. Pleasant and older decor. The food? Forget about it. It's great. I killed the sides first and then tackled the sammie. Yum yum yum. Plenty for my tum. And. The food ran just south of $17. I presented a 20 and left the rest as a tip to a deserving crew. I promise to visit more often, hopefully with company. read more

(Purely my personal opinion) I feel like you can judge a restaurant by their cornbread and Andy Nelson's has bomb cornbread. (I also love Boston market cornbread, but would put Andy Nelson's comfortably ahead). Really enjoyed our meal here! The ribs are perfectly seasoned and falls off the bone. Potato wedges is worth every carb calorie it's got! Our party had a great time and looks forward to coming back. If you plan to bring a large group it's probably best to call in advanced. More than 8 can be problematic in the winter time. But in the summer time they have seats outside which is perfect! Or the bar area. There's three building, one for catering, the middle one for main dining and then the other was the bar. The main dining is small with limited seating but this place is packed during lunch! Okay so we LOVE the food. A certain staff member did have an odd attitude the last time we were here. We make a point to be extremely kind to service providers so I'm not sure what her deal was/is. Anyways, back to the food. It's delicious. You are given so much meat, neither of us could finish our food. We absolutely did take it home to eat. We don't dine in especially now so the ample outdoor seating was great. I cannot wait to come back, I'm actually thinking about driving down today. Although it has been some time, we've been to Andy Nelson's a couple of times before and finally writing a review. Visited on a Friday night and we ordered for pickup. Called earlier to confirm hours and got an answer but when I called around 5 didn't get an answer but no worries as they were taking walk-in orders also. We ordered a full slab of the Ribs wet and a Jumbo Brisket sandwich. Ribs were excellent with a nice smoke & the sauce added a nice balance. As a Brisket lover, I had high hopes for the sandwich but was disappointed. Unfortunately, the Brisket was dry and I really didn't get any of the smoke and seasonings flavor I was expecting. Tough for me as I've had some of the best in Texas. Nelson's version is ok if you add sauce but brisket done right doesn't need anything except sides. Speaking of sides, we ordered the potato salad which got thumbs up as well the Cole Slaw was very good. I asked about the bbq taters which ended up being large seasoned potato wedges. (Not tater tots). We weren't sure if they were over cooked or if this is normal as although they were seasoned, the wedges were quite dry. We wouldn't order this side again. Servers at the counter were friendly and helpful. I see they have many awards and would say they are one of the top options for bbq in the area. My daughter and I were in Hunt Valley back in April for a convention and I was looking up a place for us to try for dinner. I googled the best bbq near me and Andy Nelson's popped up. We were not disappointed, the ribs were amazing. All the staff were really nice. My dad is a die hard Colts fan and loved his Baltimore Colts so it was awesome to see all the old Colts memorabilia all over the walls. My fiancé and I recently bought a house and still don't have a grill. So, on Memorial Day we decided to order out and get some bbq! We ordered pit beef and brisket. For sides we ordered cole slaw, cornbread, and baked beans. Meat wise, I really enjoyed the pit beef! I would have liked it a little more rare, but I'm not sure if that's an option. I didn't indicate anything in my order though so can't fault them! The cornbread was really good. I was a little disappointed in the size of the sides for the price. So after a feel weeks of my buddy Alex talking about BBQ from Andy Nelson's we decided to check it out today, OH wow can I say BEST RIBS ever?? Yes I'm going to say that. So I had a half rack of ribs dry rub and a beef brisket sandwich with cheese and wedges, can't go wrong with the brisket sandwich, very tender and u can taste the smoke pretty much. The cornbread was super moist and had just the right sweetness (Just how I make it at home),Mac n cheese was so cheesy and the collard greens were tender and seasoned very well. After years of hearing people tell me that Andy Nelson's BBQ was great, it was the best in Baltimore, we decided to go there for dinner last night. My husband ordered the put beef with baked beans and corn bread. I ordered the brisket sandwich with an order of potato wedges and pickles. Usually at bbq places, you can ask for things like slices with not much fat (or, for some people, lots of fat), slices from the ends or with the more burnt areas of the beef. The cashier told me that they don't do that. You just get what you get. OK. We came to Baltimore after decades living in Texas, so this wasn't our first rodeo, so to speak, especially with brisket. My husband liked his meal, though he told me he had eaten better put beef elsewhere. I had a bite of the cornbread, and it was really good. For my meal, however, I thought about giving it a one star. I'm a fan of the bbq brisket in Central Texas, so I was excited to try the brisket at Andy's. The order came out quickly (in less than 5 minutes). My husband's bun was filled overflowing with the pit beef, but when I opened my bun, there was nothing there, just three big blobs of brisket, two of them were 1/3 fat (on the end). The meat was tough, and I had to try to slice it with the plastic knife. The brisket had a nice flavor, but chewing through gristle defeats the purpose. The potato wedges were cold and tasteless. They charged $1.79 for the pickle spears, which I feel is a bit of a rip-off. Not to say that Texas is better (because, as a state, it is not), but for bbq brisket, that's kind of their thing . Most people who have eaten at Andy's have probably never had Texas barbecue, just like most people here have never tasted real Mexican food, so they're happy with substandard Tex Mex - it tastes different, and that's what they enjoy. While I'm at it, a couple other complaints. No jalapeños on the side, pickles are not included, and, though it's unhealthy, it would be nice to have plain white bread for the sandwich. If Andy's were new, I'd say, they can improve, but they've been around a long time. Still, there's always time. Just don't make your customers slice their brisket to make a sandwich. read more

I am often disappointed by barbecue joints. Dry ribs, mushy ribs, too-chewy ribs, achingly sweet sauces, bland pulled pork, uninspired sides - you get the idea. I've gotten a bit jaded. When I hit this place today, I was so pleasantly surprised! Everything was delicious! Get the ribs dry "Memphis style" - they're fantastic - then add sauce. The pulled pork is lush, with a perfect hit of smoke. A squirt of the vinegar-based "Pig Dip" makes it sing. The pit beef was lovely, perfectly done and moist, but the purist in me was wishing for some horseradish. We loved the collard greens, the baked beans, and the cornbread. We sat at a picnic table in what looks like a bar / event space. It was a pleasant setting for some fine barbecue on a beautiful day. Thank you, Andy Nelson's! read more

Does anyone else remember when this place used to be good? Back around 2003, we would drive two hours up here to get the best barbecue in Maryland. Then something happened. I end up giving it another go every five years or so and am always disappointed. This time, Jake's on Falls Road was closed and we decided to try Andy's again--smaller portions, higher prices, mediocre barbecue, and sides we ended up throwing away.
