A little underwhelmed given the reviews here. I echo the previous reviews to warn that this place is small, dining capacity is about 20 people. Came for a Saturday lunch, and there was a slight wait. The service was so-so; it took about 45 minutes to receive food for 4 people, though our order was relatively simple, just tacos, gorditas, some soups. When the food arrived, some of it was cold. Otherwise, the cafe is cute; some bright spots in terms of food included the freshly made tortilla chips, steak/pastor tacos, and chorizo gorditas (some in our party thought the pastor wasn't the most authentic compared to "back home"). Pozole soup was pleasant. No rush to go back to Eastie just to visit this place again, but it was worth it to try once given the dearth of authentic Mexican in this city. read more

Tried their entire offering of appetizers yesterday for late lunch, SOOO happy I did, all the other reviewers are dead on, this is 'chocolate-cinnamon' mexican at its best, ( as opposed to salsa and Monterey Jack Mexican) Tacos Arabe are truly fantastic! The ONE thing no one has yet mentioned, is the BYOB policy, which is 'no problem'. Luis informed me he will be applying for a beer and wine license in the next month, so take advantage of it until then! It's a tiny family owned place, and it's well worth the drive into East Boston. Coming from California, I've been on the eternal search for authentic Mexican food, and Angela's has it. The mole is amazing and tastes slow cooked, complex, slightly sweet, and authentic. I love that it's served over chicken breast. There are always specials, depending on what Angela feels like making, and it sounds cheesy, but you can taste the care and love put into the food. Guacamole was fresh when we went, but that may depend on the seasons. The menu also has some random breakfast items, but I've only gone for dinner. It can be a bit cold in the winter, but the food will warm you. I'm all for the family run businesses in East Boston! read more

I'm from CT where we don't have many great Mexican restaurants. After spending a night partying in Boston, I woke up with a hankering for chilaquiles. My boyfriend and I immediately searched google and Angela's was the first place to come up. It took less than five minutes of me looking at the menu to know this is where I wanted to go and boy did it not disappoint!!!! The chilaquiles were cooked perfectly along with the eggs, over medium and a bit runny just the way I love. The green sauce had a little bit of heat to it so that I didn't even need to add any hot sauce. The avocados were so fresh they looked fake on the plate. Even the refried beans has a delicious flavor. The coffee was fresh and the servers kept refilling my cup at any chance they got. Such a cozy and good vibes kind of place, on the corner of an adorable street lined with different colored houses. Next time I find myself in Boston I will most definitely be coming back here! WARNING: The restaurant is a lot smaller than it appears in pictures!!!! They can fit maybe 30 people into the restaurant when all the tables are packed. Good mexican food, guacamole and margaritas. I love their mole. Haven't had breakfast, only lunch and dinner. They have mexican sodas, including coke products and jarritos in the glass bottles. The wait staff is excellent. One lady saw that I was so disappointed that I couldn't finish my mole, and was licking the sauce off the edges of my plate just to taste the yummy goodness, that when she packed up my take home box she scraped ALL the sauce from my plate into my box! Cozy place in East Boston. I came in with 4 others on a Friday night. We started with guacamole which was awesome. I got the tilapia tacos which were also delicious. I also tried their spicy beer (clamato juice, corona, hot sauce, spices). It was shockingly palatable although hard to drink a whole one. I loved the atmosphere and the food seemed fairly authentic. Well, I was definitely on a hunt for good Mexican and thought I'd give this a try. I work by the Seaport, so I hopped in my car and tried to locate this place. I will say, it was extremely hard to find and I don't know East Boston at all, but I did finally find it! Parking was easy on the street to find, but it was lunchtime during the week, so not sure if that affected it. At first we were given the normal menu and I was like, where's the Mexican food? She could tell we were puzzled so she asked if we wanted the other menu and we said YES! The service was GREAT, she was so friendly and sweet. It is a small place and you can see the kitchen. She convinced us to get the guacamole and it was definitely worth it! Very tasty and freshly made which is awesome! I got the enchiladas and they were good although I wished they were a little warmer than what I got. I'm not a fan of mole sauce so I didn't have that. But I thought the food was delicious and fresh and the chips also were really really good! I also loved that they had Coke in bottles, I love that! glad we took a ride over to Angela's for a dinner on a friday night...the restaurant is smack in the middle of a neighborhood....we had a reservation (glad we did as it is a small place), the owner sat us, he was very nice and made us feel comfortable like we were coming in to his home. We had the guacamole and chips, which was very good, but somewhat too acidic, and our preference was for thinner chips but they were still good. I had the chicken enchilada which was excellent, chicken was great, the rice was fresh and the sauce and avocado was superb. My wife had the fish tacos, which she liked as well. Best Mexican food I've had on the East coast (lived in NYC for years as well as Boston now). After having lived near the Mexico border in Texas for a time I was spoiled rotten by great Mexican food. We were a little surprised by how small the place is the first time we went. About 10-12 small 2 person tables. This food is authentic, you can tell it's fresh and homemade! We started with the guacamole which was on point. The Chilaquiles is AMAZING!!!! I also had the Tinga burrito and tried my husbands poblano chorizo burrito. Both were simply awesome. The salsa's some would consider hot so if you've got sensitive (read wimpy lol) taste buds steer clear of those =) I hesitated to even review this because I don't want to have to deal with long lines every time we go ;-) Trust me, this is as good as Mexican food gets unless you have an grandma from the ol' country slinging it on the stove at home =) read more

Hard to believe that Boston has a Mexican restaurant like this - the price are very reasonable, the food is as good and as authentic as it gets, and the service is very good. Family Mexican as good as any that you'd find in Dan Diego or L.A. I had a tamale with salsa verde and chicken as well as two tacos - one steak and one pork. All were A+. Had a great late meal 1st night in Boston at this little joint with the family. I couldn't decide what to eat, so it was suggested to try the appetizer for 2 as a meal. I was able to try the mole poblano, the sweet steak and pineapple taco, the rolled pork/chile taquito and another chicken, bean tostada. I really enjoyed it. I could not have ceviche, so they kindly substituted one of the taco samples for me. I left it to their discretion and I was very pleased. The fish taco's and the enchilada's were delicious and the correct size portions. I hate Mexican restaurants that try to make up for quality with quantity. Angela's is not one of them the food is served hot and quickly. Service was fine. Enjoyed a side of guacamole and an al pastor taco which was tasty. The main dish, mole poblano with chicken, was dry and the sauce outside was just ok. For dessert I got the mango and ice cream which was fairly good until I reached the center where the mango tasted spoiled. I frequent here for the authentic chilaquiles, la sopa Azteca and tinga. But everything is delicious. It's not only authentic, It fails to conform to the American ideals of Mexican food. Everything about this place is great! I'm pretty picky about my dining experience. Places have to strike the right balance in terms of atmosphere, food, waitstaff, etc. Angela's does that. It's not fancy, but it's warm and friendly. Regulars come. People smile and say hello but aren't intrusive to your meal by trying to have a full conversation. And the people are VERY diverse - which I find dreadfully lacking in most Boston places. The decor is funky mom and pop. They played a good mix of music distant enough in the background to not be distracting. The waitstaff was friendly. The tables and chairs are simple, but clean and appealing. The point is - this place has character without being some gross/weird bohemian mess. The food - omg. Delicious. I honestly almost licked the plate. It was so good, I told the waitress that the place made me want to move to East Boston! I almost hate to say how good it was because its a tiny joint and if all you yelpers start going, it won't be as cool. So check it out a few at a time please :) read more

I had heard about Angela's from some neighborhood friends, and decided to try it one afternoon when I happened to be walking by. I don't normally like eating alone, but they have a small bar space that makes it feel more comfortable for lone eaters. I had the chicken mole plate and loved it. I'm a big fan of mole and I tend to try it at any restaurant that has it on the menu. I haven't been there enough to know whether it's consistent, but this was probably the best that I've had. The chicken was good quality and the sauce was perfect for my tastes: a little spicy, and not too sweet. The rice and beans on the side were also tasty, though the portions were a little small. A few other customers got the fresh guacamole, and I'll definitely try that when I go back with more people. read more

The rumors are true! Angela's is the best Mexican food in Boston. The ingredients are fresh, the margaritas are strong, and the staff is friendly. I wasn't sure how I would fair at Angela's considering I went here during a "vegetarian" phase, but I was blown away by the veggie enchiladas. They were stuffed with sauteed mushrooms, spinach, onions and peppers. The guac with homemade tortilla chips was perhaps the best I've had. Something about watching them mix it up in a molcajete right in front of us (we sat at the bar) made it even tastier. Bonus: If you are like me and are hard-wired to hate cilantro, everything is made to order. Make the trek to East Boston and give it a try. You won't be disappointed. read more

Love. It! The food was incredible, and the desserts are handmade by the daughter. I had a Mexican-style tiramisu and it was one of the best desserts I ever had! Went here one day after a long day at work and didn't want to cook dinner. Small cozy restaurant in the heart of East Boston. Very friendly staff, enthusiastic about giving suggestions from the menu. Ordered the taco al pastor which was delicious! An excellent mix of flavors and the pieces of pineapple really made this taco stand out. The gordita with chorizo was also very tasty; not too spicy but enough to heat the mouth. The corn tortilla it was served on top of was nice and thick - helped balance out the spicy topping. We are one of the obnoxious Californian transplants who have spent their first year complaining about bad so-called Mexican food in and around Boston. We ventured out to Angela's after a friend recommended it and were relieved to find it's actually good! Fresh not-from-cans food, yummy mole, actual spice in the food, and still options for my childrens' hopelessly gabacho tastes - plain cheeses quesadillas and bean/cheese burritos. Last night we had an early dinner with some friends at the quaint Angela's Cafe. We didn't call ahead but just made it for the last open table for 4. Our full party wasn't there yet but the still allowed us to sit. It was just in time too since everyone after us waited about 30min. We started off the meal with a nice pitcher of Sangria. They have since updated the way they serve it, now with large martini glasses filled with ice and fruit. (much better than the wine glasses before) I have to say I downed the sangria like I was dying in the desert for water. It was that good!! Then we ordered a large fresh made Guacamole and a large Angela's Favorites platter. The owner/waiter took his time to explain each appetizer on the plate down to the type of tortilla it was on. (corn tostada, home made gordita, or flower tortilla) There was 7 types on this platter so it was nice to know exactly what we got. I dove right into the shrimp ceviche tostada with queso fresco and avacado on a corn tostada..... I was expecting a lemon fresh shrimp with a kick... but no... just tasted like plain shrimp cocktail... So I moved on to the pork mole wrapped in the flower tortilla with a side of chipotle sauce... THIS WAS AMAZING!! For my meal I had the Enchiladas rojas with chicken... The dish was great. had a slight kick to it. I'm starting to enjoy the spice of food and am able to go spicier and spicier each time. I would definitely recommend this place and it is worth the drive to eastie.. especially for breakfast. The steak and eggs is to die for!! a nice 10oz helping.... I would say no for young kids since I have been there with my nieces before. (too small) Groups of 6 or more are okay but just call ahead since the place only seat around 25 including bar seats. read more

The food is great, but for a price. Angela's Cafe is a quant, mom and pop style 10-top Mexican restaurant. Similar to other reviewers, we also found that the restaurant "nickel-and-dimes" its patrons. For example, after ordering the $18 Angela's Mole, their specialty, we were asked if we wanted corn or flour tortillas. Later, when the bill came, we realized the tortillas came at $4 per person, on top of what we were already paying. While it is pricey, the serving sizes were average and satisfying. I found my sirloin steak to be large but a good portion of that was fat. Overall, I will return to this restaurant, but be warned you must be careful of what you order as it will cost you. read more

A family owned restaurant, Angela's brings authentic Mexican cuisine to East Boston. All the ingredients are fresh and, when possible, sourced from Mexico. Joe, one of the owners, spent a lot of time explaining their dishes to us and recommended we try the house special, chilaquiles. It was off the hook. Very pleased to have found this place. read more
