Hands down the best Mexican in Boston. Fresh, authentic and made from scratch with love! I have dined at Angelas at least ten times and have never gone wrong. Favorites include: sopa poblana, sopa azteca, guacamole, gorditas (hand made), pozole, mexican meatballs, and of course, the enchiladas. The pozole is absolutely perfect on a cold night. Cold Wednesday night, East Boston streets littered with dirty frozen snow, and heaps of trash. My g/f has a craving for Mexican food, so we decide to drive out to Eastie to check this place out. First, it seems that they don't have a heating system, or they don't like to use it. We get the table by the door ... I'd rather wear my coat, thank you. The cold air blowing under the door chills our paws, and the mood. We order the obligatory guacamole, some steak tacos, tamales, shrimp tostada, cactus salad, a margarita, some beer. Half an hour later (!) some of it starts arriving ... hmm, the tacos don't seem to have all the advertised ingredients? Oh, and thanks for the water we never got :( The food is best described as taste-free diet food. Nothing has any particular flavor, and it all feels a bit too much like overpriced Taco Bell. We eat our mini-sized portions with no complaints, pay, and leave this place behind. On the way home, we stop by El Triunfo taqueria in the South End, for some tasty Mexican take-out. read more

Had a reservation for tonight 3/15/14 for a birthday party. The guest list was a surprise to the birthday girl until our table was not ready and the entire group of 14 waited outside for 25 minutes. 5 minutes before our table was ready, the manager sent a waitress out to take drink orders, no apology given. The waitress was lovely and very kind but put in a position that should have been handled by a manager. When we were invited in the nice young waitress, to no fault of her own, sat us at two separate tables. When I approached the manager about this, he claimed that he "he didn't take the reservation" so he didn't know. My wife had made a reservation 4 days before and confirmed a day ahead to make sure they could handle a reservation this large. I was also told I "should have addressed the space problem when You arrived". When I expressed my dissatisfaction the manager, who had yet to apologize, he offered free guacamole to resolve the problem for a party of 14. If I could right a review with 0 stars I would. "Im sorry" goes a long way. A manager looking to blame his staff and the customer along with failing to apologize is unacceptable. I'm in a service industry and can deal with a lot but this guy alone ruined this place for me forever. read more

Another gem in Eastie! Walked over for happy hour with coworkers on a Friday after work and shared a couple pitchers of sangria, guac, and a quesadilla. It's an intimate setting with only a few tables, and friendly service. The pitchers are generous, allowing for about 5 full glasses of drink, a great option for groups if you can all agree on either margaritas or sangria. The guacamole is an avocado lover's dream, by deceptively large. Our group of four quickly devoured every bit of guac in the molcajete. My coworker had a bowl of the sopa Azteca, which smelled and looked delicious and hearty. I will definitely return to try the margaritas and more food options! read more

I grew up in Texas, so I know Mexican and Boston has horrible options all over the place. This one is a diamond in the rough of East Boston. The restaurant is quite small. The food is pretty darn good. It's not quite good as back home, but it is good. They get bonus points for how fresh and homemade everything is at Angela's. The prices are fantastic too! Was there for lunch -- overpriced and over rated! The food was flavorless and more than boring. The presentation was, well, there WAS no presentation. I can't believe some of the reviews. There are several Mexican style restaurants in Boston (nothing like Mexico, or L.A.!) that are far superior to this one. Disappointing !!!! Ate here a couple of times, every times a bit worse ! No chips this time . Queso fundidio peppers had brown seeds like they were going bad. Super greasy taco . I heard and read stellar reviews of the place and was somewhat interested but once my sister and her husband glorified the place and went to days back-to-back I had to check it out for myself. Maybe it was 'cause it was so hyped but I thought it was just "eh." I mean, yeah, the ingredients were fresher than area Mexican joints and the guacamole (which was a whopping $9!!) was as good as I make at home, but I felt the portions were too tiny for the price tag. Expect to pay $9 for apps and $15 for entrees. And don't go there if you're craving a burrito because you'll be disappointed. This place serves legit Mexican and not what most here are accustomed to. REAL TRUE MOLE Subtle, layered, rich. It's a rare treat to get real mole anywhere, especially in Boston. These guys are the real deal. We tasted "Puebla" in our dishes and asked and yes, they are from the charming town of Puebla. This place is a hidden gem. The prices are reasonable (for Boston) and the food is delicious. The guacamole is as good as it gets at a restaurant. Came here with a large group on a Sunday. Staff was very attentive and friendly. We all agreed that this was one of the top breakfasts/lunches we have had in Boston. Start with the chips and fresh guacamole dip, you won't be disappointed. You could see and taste the fresh chunks of avocado in it, it was sooo good. I ordered the rancheros...I am a sucker for Huevos Rancheros (that's what she said?), and they served up one of the best version I've ever had. Our table split a stack of dulce de leche pancakes (dulce de leche is kind of like a spanish version of caramel). We were all fighting to get as much of those pancakes as possible, think of that Hungry-Hungry Hippos game but with forks and pancakes instead of hippos and marbles. I would definitely order both of those dishes again. My friends recommend the Horchata drink (rice and cinnamon, and I think milk), and any of the enchiladas or tamales plates. The food at this place is unbelievable. So good I had to write about it. I had the Enchiladas con Salsa Verde. Honestly the best I've ever had. The guacamole is indeed very good, and my mole enchiladas were also quite tasty, but not extraordinary, except perhaps in the context of the generally awful standard of Mexican food in Boston. The desert crepas were competent, but in hindsight I could have taken a pass. I live in Eastie, so will probably come again, but I wouldn't tell friends to drive to Eastie just to come here. There always seems to be a problem when a restaurant from the other end of East Boston opens up a second one in the Orient Heights area. The food is never as good, and it is always more expensive! This is the third restaurant that's open in the same spot! I've eaten in their first Restaurant down the other end of East Boston. The food was okay, but really very pricey for Mexican food. How much does it cost to make re-fried beans, mole and rice? The portions are rather small, so you will have to bring lots of pesos in order to get satisfied ! Does anyone really want to spend over 20 bucks for a couple of enchiladas with a drop of mole on top? I don't care even if the mole is home made! Lastly, not too many Latinos eating here, I guess only the gringos can afford such high prices, and probably don't know the difference between what's good Mexican, what is just average. read more

I met up with some Eastie friends for breakfast at Angela's this morning, and it was pretty good. I got wooed by the strawberry pancakes with dulce de leche sauce, but then accidentally ordered the strawberry french toast (it was early; I was tired). It was ok. I bet the pancakes would have been better. It was cheap though, which is a plus, and the coffee wasn't bad. I'll be back, but probably for dinner. The best mexican i have EVER had. This place is absolute gem. Anything you order will be delicious. My favorites: chicken poblano and the deluxe rancheros. The chicken poblano contains the PERFECT mixture of spice and cream (but not too heavy) which is provided in abundance to cover the delightful chicken and the plentiful shrimp. Deluxe ranchers are cooked to perfect with amazing, flavorful chorizo, perfectly cooked egg, DELICIOUS sauce and ALWAYS FRESH avocado. Drinks are pretty good too. Service is quick, friendly and helpful. Place is small so you may have to wait a little, but they are quick so shouldn't be too long. read more

2 minutes from my apt so I ate here all the time. Often went to pick up fresh squeezed orange juice. Breakfast is a bit expensive and generally good portion and quality. Lunch and dinner are a lot better. When possible, I order Mariscada (seafood platter thing) or the classic Mole Poblano de Angela or pork loin in their special chocolate sauce. Sometime they overcook the pork and it can be too dry for certain taste, so you may want to let them know your preference. read more

I have heard so many good things about this hidden gem and boy was everyone right! I went here Sat for an early dinner and had the freshest guacamole I have ever tasted - made to order and served in those fun stone authentic bowls. AMAZING! Then we ordered a bunch of $2 tacos which were plenty filling after 2 or 3. Both the chicken and steak were so fresh and tasty! Affordable, authentic, great service, and cute and quaint. The word authentic should be reserved for foods like these. Angela's Cafe is my favorite Mexican restaurant. There are plenty of safe options on the menu, but if you nudge yourself just a little bit to try something new, or something familiar with a twist, your willingness for adventure will be rewarded. BTW, I am vegetarian. There are some veggie options on the menu, but if you just talk with the server, they will nearly always modify any dish as best they can. This is an amazing little cafe in the middle of East Boston. What a find. Three of us went for dinner and our food was delicious. I had a NY strip with all the fixings. It was made just the way I like it. My daughter had a Mexican dish. My husband had a quesadilla, which he thoroughly enjoyed. We had a guacamole appetizer which was outstanding. If you like guacamole definitely order it. We went back today for brunch and all of us we're extremely pleased. All of the food is homemade and supervised by the owner. FOOD CRAWL PART I: to get an idea of what happens on a food crawl - 17 of us each put in $20, we order a couple dishes to pass at each restaurant, and we eat til the money's gone. i went on an east boston food crawl with 16 other people (17 of us in total), and even though our group essentially took over angela's, they still accommodated us just fine. we had the best guacamole i've ever encountered - lots of lime and lots of salt - very very fresh and perfectly seasoned. house-made chips, tortillas, and queso tided us over until the star platters came out - a giant sampler of tortillas with cactus, poblanos, chicken, pork, and shrimp. Try the pork tacos, mole, and the specials. You can never go wrong with ordering their specials. Sometimes it sounds a little too much for my taste but I love it as soon as I eat it. The mother Angela is their early in teh day it seems and her son Louis runs it the rest of the time. They are so nice. Only set back is in the winter the door opening causes a draft in this little restaurant so come prepared! read more
