We are new to Bayonne and our eye doctor and a couple of people I met at a local gym recommended Angelina's. I was a bit hesitant to try despite the strong positive reviews, because I also read reviews about it being hard to get a table and they can be rude and its a whole thing and blah blah blah. I am glad I didn't listen to those reviews! It was an amazing experience and Angelina and her son were so nice to us. Yes you have to call up a couple of times to make a reservation and put in your food order, but trust me it's worth it. The decor is nothing like any other restaurants, and the whole experience is nothing like another restaurant. The decor is loud, American and flashy, with an undertone of warmth given by the red and Christmas lights strung everywhere. 4th of July meets Christmas meets Election Day, also somehow it evoked a feeling of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation. Over the bar area a TV was playing the football playoffs and also a radio was playing jazz and swing music. It's literally like going over someone's house. In a really good way, you feel welcomed and taken care of. Angelina's son pours your glass of wine to the brim and refills your sangria at no charge. He even taught us how to eat the stuffed artichoke after he saw us scooping it on our plate. Instead he said just take a leaf off and suck everything out. Which actually made so much sense and made the experience eating the appetizer much better. I never had a stuffed artichoke before so I can't compare it to anything, but it was a really fun experience eating it and was buttery and delicious. Food came out pretty quickly. The artichoke came out probably just 15 minutes after we sat down. The meals seem to range from 20-40 dollars a dish. I assume the prices fluctuate more than your average restaurant. Which is fine to me, food is more expensive nowadays and these portions are huge and delicious. It's family style! The artichoke was $22, the eggplant parm $30, lasagna $38 and the chicken marsala $40. Glass of wine $10, Sangria $13. Cash only I believe. 3 people could probably share one entree and feel content enough to go home. But we got 3 entrees and an appetizer for 4 people. We have dinner for the rest of the week! Prepare to overeat when you come here. The Eggplant parm was stand-out for me. It was my favorite. The sauce was sweet and light, and the eggplant was crispy and flavorful. The lasagna had a different tomato sauce on it, also good. The cheese in the lasagna was really good as well. There was also a side of pasta handed to us, not sure which dish it was supposed to accompany. It also had red sauce on it, but tasted different from the two other red sauces! That's a real level of detail, make 3 different red sauces when you could just use the same. It's just such good quality food. The bread that was brought out was very good as well, soft, - a good dipping bread! Ask for dessert because the Cannoli was delicious! I want to come back and try tiramisu if they have it. We spent 2 hours here. There were only 2 other tables on a Saturday night. I don't think it's as coveted as it used to be, it's easy to call her. Just find it on google maps and press the call button. I called when the place is closed (before 4:30), because I assume she is busy cooking and attending to the guests during dinner time. Then you just reserve a date and time. She messages you the menu. Though for some reason the text never came through on my phone so I called back and asked if she can send it to my husband's phone number. She did, and we got the menu. I called her back up told her our food order and a week later we sat down and enjoyed our delicious meal! This place is the best, and a really great place to go when your new to the town. Been waiting to try Angelina's for a while. Finally made it here!! First you have to call and make reservations months in advance due to their popularity. You also have to order your food weeks prior. We walked in and were greeted by JonPaul. Only 5 tables but they have staggered seating due to the food being cooked fresh. Ms. Angelina cooks everything herself. The restaurant looks like we stepped into a Quentin Tarantino movie. You have to see it in person to know what I mean. Freaking awesome!! Blue sangria!! We ordered the Tomato and mozzarella salad and Stuffed artichoke. Both were equally delicious. Very large portions. The artichoke was huge!! Escarole and bean soup was very, very good! We ordered the Veal Parmesan , Chicken Parmesan , shrimp scampi and broccoli rabe with sausage pasta. Not realizing how big these portions are.. we left with half the food. Both parmesans were tender, flavorful and had a nice crisp to the outside. Shrimp scampi was delicious, lots of shrimp and had a great scampi sauce. Broccoli rabe and sausage pasta was excellent. My friend and I have a years-long tradition of going to throwback Italian-American spots in the metro area. We have a spreadsheet and track notes and thoughts of our experiences. I recently became aware of this place, and to say we found it intriguing would be an understatement. I've been here twice now, and I can honestly say that the food is great and the experience is one-of-a-kind. You call and make a reservation, and yes, you order ahead of time after they send you a text of the menu. No walk-ins. Angelina makes the food fresh and it arrives fresh. Mama don't play games. The decor ... yanno what? You could say a lot of things about it. I for one like when places are unique. This place is certainly unique. If the decor doesn't meet your liking, my advice is that you mark that as part of your experience, and move on. The food is worth it! Over my two visits there so far, I have sampled the lasagna (one of the best I have ever had), veal marsala (deelish), linguine with clam sauce (phenomenal), chicken parm (fantastic) and of course their standard pasta side (perfectly cooked and sauced) and their bread (insanely good). But the lobster bisque steals the show every time. I can't not get it when I go. Ever. It's a whole lobster tail in a delicious soup. Unreal! I can honestly say Angelina does not EVER cut corners in her cooking and it shows. Get yourself here, whatever it takes. Angelina's is one of my top picks for girls night dinners! My girlfriends and I love coming here for a long, leisurely dinner with some of the best home cooked Italian food that we have ever had. Angelina and her son run the place and Angelina is the one and only chef! She scratch makes everything to order, and the food is delicious!! The restaurant is small, only about 6-7 tables, and once a table orders, their food is prepared to order. Some might not like this because orders don't come out in minutes ... but good things take time! While you wait, you are given delicious warm bread and (if you choose) hearty pours of wine. Most people that come here are frequent visitors so it's not uncommon to get into a friendly conversation with another table. The food is beyond !! Portions are massive, literally. Wow. That's all that needs to be said about this place. Came in here with my family for dinner on a Sunday and it was unbelievable. It's a very small place but we made reservations. We were actually the only people in the entire restaurant. The owner does everything here, not one other employee working in the place; she's the waitress, cook, and even the bartender. We got a salad family style and and it was delicious and everything was very fresh. I got the veal parm dinner and it was even better. The serving size was MASSIVE. I took over half home but was absolutely stuffed, and I can eat a lot of food. Everyone had about two drinks, the salad and their meals and with a nice generous tip it came out to about 65 a person, but it was very worth it. We walked in and No one greeted us for at least 5 minutes. The place only had seating for about 30 guests. Then a lady (probably the cook) came out and pointed to an open table. We waited several more minutes for someone (ANYONE) to acknowledge us as we sat and watched a man, around 30-ish, dressed in a black jogging suit and a flat top cap. He appeared to be a server as he was carrying plates and serving others. He completely ignored us whereby after several minutes I waved to get his attention and finally came over with a menu the size of the Magna Carta. It was entirely written in long hand with NO prices anywhere.. He asked what we wanted to drink and we ordered 2 glasses of red wine. He returned with them promptly but they were ICE COLD so we couldn't drink them. Finally after several more minutes, I flagged him down again and asked if we could have some bread or something to eat. He then wanted to know what we wanted to order. I asked about the price of the Veal dish and he said around $30. And it was CASH only. We wanted to leave as we were not prepared to pay cash. He was very belligerent and made a coarse comment to us. This place is a NIGHTMARE!! AVOID IT AT ALL COSTS!!! Angelina's is basically a one woman operation. There is "limited help" from a family member. It's a dark, uncomfortably dank place that is tastelessly decorated with a bizarre mixture of Christmas lights, ornaments, and toys. There was a long wait before we ever saw a menu, and close to an hour before we were served. But we thought, hey, the place has been in business for 38 years so the food must be amazing! Wrong! Someone at the next table commented that the portion was pretty large. The "waiter" said in a bad Brooklynese accent, "Yea, large portions! My muddah she was born wit lead in her fingah-tips!" We ordered Stuffed Shells and Ravioli a la Vodka. The sauces were very heavy, acidy, and salty. The ricotta filling was bland in both dishes, lacking parsley and seasonings. Meanwhile, the family at the next table finished and asked for the check. Angelina accidentally spilled a coke from that table and quickly took a pillow from the decor to soak it up. The "waiter" came out and said, "Youse gotta excuse my mudder - she's kinda burnt out after 38 years!", to which Angelina screamed, "JERK!!! 28 years old, still at home and I can't get rid of him!" and it escalated from there. Unbelievable high drama! The menu had no prices, as if aspiring to be an upscale restaurant apparently! But I figured for what we were ordering it should be about $8 - $10 range. It wasn't. The value was absolutely terrible! The pasta dishes were $12 and $18 - double of what many other establishments in the general area charge for the same thing! Service was rude and unbearably slow, taking more than 90 minutes for only a 1 course meal!!! The family members were even fighting in front of the customers. The place is a nightmare in every way! I heard about this hidden gem from a friend and me and my friend decided to give this a try; I'm so glad we did! The atmosphere was funny, it was like you were sitting in a very large living room (yes, there is a couch in the middle of the place) you had 4th of July decor all around, plastic palm trees with Christmas lights, quirky and cute! This is def a place where they take their time with your meal. It's run by 2 people (mom and son) Angelina and John Paul! What an absolute ball we had last night with complete strangers! Make reservations well in advance and deal with Angelina who is curt and rushes you on the phone so we made our reservation for a party of six for a Saturday night. Then several days before your reservation, you hafta call in your order so she can have all the food to prepare what you order.Only this time when I called she told me I was too late even though I called on Wednesday like I had done on our previous visit, which I told her. But she just kept repeating, too late. When i asked exactly what were we to do she got to the point and told me a large party had called so she just cancelled us and gave our reservation to the larger party without even notifying us. ZERO ZERO ZERO. Wow! I have never been angered/sadder while writing a review. It's 5:30 Sunday and I've been eating so much chicken/fish I decided to check out some beef/lamb options in my new town. Called an Indian place called Kashmir something in Bayonne that I found right here on Yelp. They didn't have any good dishes that were just lean meat, but the lady who picked up the phone gave me an excellent description of each of the items and the price when I called her twice. Cordial but doesn't have what I need. Move on. The lady who owns this place/picked up the phone is a psycho! Asked her what she had with beef or lamb. Gave me names of Italian dishes so fast , that I asked her " can you clarify what was in each one?" Her response directly (I kid you not- out of the blue) and WITH attitude...."No I can't, I'm too busy right now. Goodbye" *Slams phone* I'm so stunned, and a little angry but I realize I can't help someone like that, and I'm not going to order from a place where the chef could possibly do something to my food in retalation. I have no idea what triggered such a response. It's not racism either. Was born and raised in Jersey City, no accent, no nothing! She is just unbelievably rude. I absolutely love this place. I've only been to Angelina's once, but I have been looking for the opportunity/proper hunger level to actually try it out. While its a bit deceptive on the outside, when you walk into Angelina's you can feel the love of family in the air. The owner's name is really "Angelina" and she has been working that kitchen with LOVE forever. When I went, there was only a family of 5 enjoying their dinner. Accompanied but the sounds of the NBA playoffs, along with the bartender/server, who appears to be Angelina's son, striking up engaging, yet familial conversation. The place has a ton of couches that are very plush and remind you of eating at home on the couch, with a dark room surrounding you. I loved this place. The food was absolutely amazing. Decided to try out Angelina's with some friends on a Monday based on some Yelp reviews. The restaurant has a non-descript doorway, but upon entering I knew we were in for something special. Walking through the door was like walking into my Italian grandmother's living room in the 1970s... And I mean that in a great way! Plush couches, old chairs, plentiful/old decorations and Sinatra playing in the background makes for a comfortable atmosphere. It was like eating in the living room during an Italian holiday. On the day we went, Angelina herself was the hostess, waitress and chef. The menu was handwritten without prices, and she said if it wasn't on there she could probably make it anyways. She refused to give us any recommendations, but assured us that everything was fantastic. And she was right. We started with the family style salad which was delicious, and then had the seafood fra diavalo (for 4, but really enough for 8) and chicken parm.
