The first few times I went to this place I loved it. It is such an experience. It is delightfully tacky in decoration and the owner Angelina is very nice and funny. Their menu and their portions were huge. Their clams in red sauce and fresh garlic bread, to die for. Sadly, the last time we went with a huge group of people and two things happened. The portions were much smaller and not that great tasting. When we got the bill I almost fell over. We had ordered a little bit of alcohol, but it looked like we were ripped off. Angelina's son was the bartender and it wasn't top shelf either. There are no prices on their menus, so every time you can get charged a different price. I know alcohol isn't cheap, but we had to have been charged at least $20 a glass. read more

For the record, I never made it in the restaurant. My bf, his family and I went there since they were advised that this place was phenomenal. We arrived around 5pm and were advised by a passerby that they opened between 5:30pm and 6pm. The windows were open but the lights were out so we figured someone would be by soon. We decided to wait in case there was a long line. Another couple waited for a few minutes and then went next door. We waited until 6:20pm and gave up. We ended up eating next door at the Spanish restaurant also. We came out after 7:30 and hey guess what? Angelina's never opened up!. At least send someone to put a sign at the door and let customers know that something came and unfortunately you wont be opening up. read more

It's been a while since I've been here and to celebrate my wife's birthday we ate here on a Saturday night in February. With the mixed reviews on some sites, I felt the need to provide a disclaimer to prepare folks for this dinning experience. The restaurant is small, eclectic, bordering on tacky but it's like being in your Italian aunts home. Angelina and her son basically run this place, no bus boys, waiters or chefs just these two, with Angelina being the artist. She is a passionate host and remarkable chef. Like your aunt or grandmother she is opinionated, but you have to commend her patriotism. Go into this dinning experience with an open mind, if seeing a campaign sticker from a candidate you didn't support offends you, then perhaps this is not your place. But open your mind and pallette, because what they do here is amazing. From the tomato and mozzarella salad, I know you're thinking a simple salad....no this is fantastic. Bright tasting, zesty, flavorful with fresh herbs and a delicious vinaigrette. The garlic bread, simply fantastic, cheesy, garlicky with luscious buttery flavor. I had the classic lasagna and it was the best I've had. Meaty, cheesy, with rich layers so delicious. My wife had the shrimp oreganetta, buttery, garlicky with tons of flavor. Angelina is a master artist and will simply blow you away with her interpretations to classic Italian dishes. Come here with an open mind and an empty belly, don't come here fragile and waiting to be offended or trying to debate your political position. Come here to eat and enjoy the food for which is fantastic, bountiful and succulent. A must for Italian food fans, you will be blown away. read more

This place really dissapointed my family and I . After spending countless hours (Sure felt like that), in the restaurant waiting for the main course , all three of our dinners were beyond terrible . I orderd the Veal Parmigiana, it was the most OVERCOOKED, TASTLESS, HORRIBLY BREADED VEAL I have ever experienced eating, and I have been eating it at some of the best in NYC, NJ, ETC...Just no excuse for it , and $$$ too...WHY?? It all went right in the garbage after we left the resturant !! My wife had the Shrimp Marinara, she said that was the most TASTELESS, WATERY, marinara sauce she has ever eaten . It sure was enough for a party of 6 to eat, but Sorry, just plain awful..The SHRIMP was also curly, WTF is up with that . It makes me wonder where this shrimp was from . Oh boy, just AWFUL. We would never go back, and furthermore, because of that horrible experience, don't think I would be back in that area to eat . The Marinara sauce is just awful, too watery!! I have been to places, FAMILY size portions, where the food is EXCEPTIONAL, this place is bad, not excuses . Funny to me, that while we were dinning, some of the people next to us , where telling us how great the food is and they are regulars there, I bet!! I know one thing, they don't know good italian food . So to all reading this REVIEW, you can bet I know what I am talking about when it comes to eating ITALIAN food. I went to Angelina's for dinner... The place was too dark, can't figure out the decor, and way way to pricey for the food you get which was just barely ok, but must say the waiter paid close attention... to his phone! The portions were extremely big, and maybe if the portions were cut to half they could lower the prices. The menu looked like they were made by a 3rd grader and ridiculously over sized. I've been going here for about 10 years. This is seriously the best Italian restaurant ever. Really, it's the best restaurant. Small and cozy. Yes, you feel like you're sitting in your family dining room...that's the charm of it. I have a hard time not ordering the same thing because I love it. Mussels with linguini. I've had the chicken Milanese which is amazing and also the roasted pork. Not a bad thing on this homemade menu...homemade food and homemade menu. This adds to the charm of the place. Angelina is the owner, cook and her son is the waiter. I love the relationship between them and it does feel like you're at Sunday dinner...if your were in an Italian home (which I'm not and that makes me love it all the more!) Fresh cannoli at the end if you can even possibly stuff them in. We've drunk them out of wine twice and John Paul had to run to the store to get us more. How much better service can you even ask for? The people who wrote negative reviews don't get what Angelina's is all about. Some of them didn't even eat there....they were put off by a phone call with the restaurant and never went. The food is authentic and awesome. That's why she has a regular following.Yes, there's a wait as Angelina cooks your made -to-order dishes. She's a force of nature and shouldn't have to answer the phone to tell people the ingredients in her food. This isn't Olive Garden. All the decor is immaculate and so are the bathrooms. But most importantly, the food is keeps people coming back. Everytime I go there we chat it up with people at other tables; everyone has opinions on what are the best dishes. I love this place. Hands down this is the best meal I have ever had in NJ. I would give this place 20 stars if I could. JP and his Mom run a great place. Both are part of the charm of Angelinas. Angelina is one of the kindest people you will ever meet. She comes out to talk to guests while busy cooking. She is gifted in that everything she cooks, it just to die for. JP is a sweet guy who yells "MA" when he walks into the kitchen. He is super sweet and fun to talk to. The mussels, mozz salad, shrimp and just about everything for an app is delicious. The portion size is huge. You literally could eat the first course for the entire dinner. I love the mussels and typically take home the remaining juice from the mussels to use later. When I re-heat it, it is perfect. The table comes with fresh hot bread. Perfect to dip into the white wine mussel sauce. The roasted pork, chicken parm, the prime rib, seafood plate are all just amazing. Again, these are huge portions and you will most likely want to take it home. Each plate is cooked to perfection therefore be prepared the food takes a while to cook. Angelina makes it from scratch and all of the food is freshly picked earlier in the day. Hands down the BEST Italian food ive ever consumed!! Shrimp Parmigiana and Shrimp Oreganata being my favorites. Once youre seated be prepared to wait for your food, these dishes are made to order by Angelina herself and only Angelina but the finished product is worth every minute. As far as the ambiance, it is a dimly lit establishment with quirky decor. Its like an aunts house who never has to decorate for the holidays because all of the decorations are already up. My husband and I went last night for our 6 year wedding anniversary. I lived in Bayonne for 11 years and never came here, never heard of it. I got a tip from my sis that I should check it out. We walked into what seemed like a forest LMAO! The plants are right in the doorway, we were dying laughing as we practically climbed over them... We didn't wait long- we were there maybe an hour and 20 min in total. We loved how it was decorated like old school italian/christmas. This lady takes your order and then goes and cooks your stuff. We were the only ones in there. We ordered a caprese salad, it was like a foot high with red juicy tomatoes, chunks of fresh mootz, and italian dressing and basil. And got 2 loaves of delicious brick oven Italian bread. At that point, we were in heaven. We ordered a veal parm, and a chicken parm with spagetti with garlic and oil as our side pasta. I ordered a beer and it came in a ICYYY cold glass, again in heaven. The chicken and veal parm is OUT OF THIS WORLD. I must have eaten at every Italian place in Bayonne and Staten Island, and nothing compares to this. Better than my own LOL. I swear 3 people could have eaten off of my plate. We had so many leftovers we are actually mouth watering today cant wait to eat for dinner...OMG. Only complaint is that there was a couple of those fruit flies around us, probably from all the plants...had to kill a few which was kinda gross but the food made up for it so i didnt care, i was kinda busy stuffing my face. Angelina's is the best restaurant around. I miss Angelina's after moving from Bayonne, but I always go back just for some of "Grandma's style" cooking. It's a very small, very friendly, family owned establishment. My wife & I are VERY picky and we absolutely love the coziness & always changing eclectic decor. If you are in a rush Angelina will make you a take out order, otherwise you will need to be patient for Angelina to make your meal cooked to order. Dont listen to Nicky Negative from Manhattan. He's clueless if he can't appreciate this style of cooking and he just doesn't get it. You dont see restaurants like this anymore. It's a refreshing change from the same old same old. Just set a night aside and dont rush. Just enjoy the best Italian food in Bayonne. (probably NJ) We recently had Lasagnette, Shrimp Francaise, Eggplant Rollantini app. and an amazing Romaine, Tomato, Onion, Mozz Italian salad. Her Ravioli is great too as is the Stuffed Artichoke & Roast Pork. Anything off her menu is awesome. (And anything but salty, my wife can't eat salt so that's just a flat out lie) John Paul's accent seems more Long Islander than Brooklynese. I wish I could have seen the coke spilling incident. I ordered mussels as an appetizer and I feel like there were 6-7 dozen mussels in the bowl. I ordered shrimp as entree and there had to be 20 shrimp on my plate. All of the food was made fresh when ordered. i would highly recommend this restaurant for anyone in the mood for a great Italian dining experience in Bayonne. My only warning is to give yourself enough time for dinner because while the owner is very attentive, it seems like she cooks to order so it takes longer than average. So my husband and I decide to try it out for ourselves I called during the week and the mother rudely said no reservations necessary. We get there to find an run down hole in the wall place it seemed more like a bar not a Resturant . We were greeted by the son whom said no room for us tonight because the tables were being held for different people. I begin to tell him we traveled from staten island to Bayonne and called during the week and his mother came out of no where and said there is no room rudely. Unique and relatively unknown, Angelina is a worthwhile visit for those who are prepared to have a very relaxed but authentic and filling Italian meal. The restaurant is quite small and intimate. The decor is somewhat kitschy with remnants of Christmas and Valentines trimmings still in evidence...this is the week after Easter. The place is clean and fresh though perhaps a little cluttered. Food is freshly prepared by Angelina so it does take a lot of time. Slow does not imply apathetic, rather deliberate and hindered by Angelina's unassisted kitchen duties. The wait is worthwhile. Angelina does prepare food exceptionally well and in copious quantities. Stuffed mushrooms were savory and the stuffed artichoke was also uniquely prepared and delicious. I had shrimp fra diavolo which was perfectly spiced, not wickedly red-hot. Served over perfectly prepared linguine al dente. The veal parmigiana was colossal and brimming with flavor. The overall menu is what you would expect, elementary, straight-forward, and traditional. The selection may be somewhat ordinary but the preparation and the portions are extraordinary. Don't expect an extravagant wine selection. We had a very reasonably priced Chianti but wine variety is quite limited. You come here for the food! Dessert selection was also limited to tiramisu or ice cream. Again, the portion was mammoth and the tiramisu was as good as it gets. No credit cards accepted so bring cash. Bottom line, food is terrific and ample. Service is obliging and receptive. If you are in a rush, go elsewhere. If you want traditional Italian, and want to relax over a bottle of wine while a great meal is being prepared, this is a good choice. read more

After not eating here for 10 years because of a badly prepared meal I decided to try only because I got a coupon for $25 off from a website through my company. Immediately I was turned off by the angry owner yelling over her shoulder that they don't take coupons, then she proceeded to yell "we don't take credit cards either, cash only". Now embarrassed, we sit and when my shrimp francaise was brought to the table it was sitting in a pool of francaise broth about 3/4" deep. THE EXACT REASON OF THE BADLY PREPARED meal 10 years previous. The shrimp was unrecognizable as shrimp it was a soggy mess and the pool of broth was sour. The kicker was when the bill came because I was charged $29. I won't comment on the length of time it took to be served as I can understands she prepares it herself, but as I was sitting there I had bad memories of years ago when we waited well over an hour to be served. The decor is horrendous but I guess that she may be trying for a quirky atmosphere, which would be ok, IF the food was acceptable. My go to spot for Italian!!!!! Delicious!! All made by Angelina herself. Appetizers are always mussels in red sauce and the tomato and mozz salad. Can't go there and not eat those!!!! The mussels are enough to feed about 10 people!!! Very large portions of everything. Along with some hot bread. My favorite dinner is the shrimp oreganata. I've tried this dish at other places and nothing compares. The seafood fra diavolo is amazing!!!!! A half order is more than plenty for two people. I will never go back to this restaurant. I didn't think the owner was that friendly of a person. she looked and seemed like she didn't want to be there. There was only one other couple there and we still waited 1.5 hours for our food. I ordered ravioli in vodka sauce and the sauce was watery and really wasn't that great.
