Was in South Plainfield for a wake and decided to grab a bite afterwards. A quick yelp check of popular eateries in the area, and Angelina's Tavern, only a few doors away looked promising. The reviews were on the money. Rustic looking, half dive bar, old school looking joint with a full bar and a separate dining room in the back. Ultra casual vibe throughout, not very large dining area, with plain wooden tables placed around the room. I guess cozy, comfortable, and homey would be my call. Decor was very simple, but just right for this ambiance. I wasn't looking for elegant dining, just good solid food, and of course, pizza. Plus, they have a good sized parking lot, which is always a plus. Very hospitable, quick, and friendly service. Kudos to our efficient waitress who was very busy as the tables were mostly filled, but managed to stay on top of everything. The shared appetizers were delicious (shrimp special, Arancini, and fried Calamari ), but the star of the show was the wood fired, classic Grandma Pie ( also comes Sicilian style if that's your preference). The pie was excellent, and a great companion to my cold bottle of Heineken beer. Generously sized, perfectly seasoned, nice crispy, crunchy crust and undercarriage, with a tasty sauce and cheese topping. It all married together very nicely. Since I was never was here before and it's within walking distance of my home I finally got around to going. You pretty can sit anywhere you want either at the bar area or the dining room they don't seem to hardcore about assigned seats. The downside of the dining room is it's in the same room with the pizza over so it's gets hot they had ceiling fans on but it was still very warm.My waitress was very nice I started off with the meatballs they were good but what stole the show from them was the bread that came with them for dipping. It was soft and light and tasted amazing. The main dish was the parma pizza. It was very good you can never go wrong with anything with prosciutto and mozzarella. It was thin crust but was sturdy enough to be picked up. My only complaint was that the sauce was too watery for my liking but it didn't derail the dish. We were recommended by a friend small world. Everybody knew everybody from our town although location is in South Plainfield Family is from town, which is where we're from. Food selection was great. We were thinking about heading out to that pizza spot in Raritan but they seemed to get pretty arrogant on their website based on a pizza review, so we decided to find a more local joint. And holy smokes, Angelina's tavern has such a local vibe - the servers and staff are super friendly and helpful. Was blown away by the food! The pizza was way up there with some of my favorites. Great flavor, crust, fresh ingredients - only complaint was the pizza interior was a bit liquidly, which doesn't make for great cold pizza for breakfast, so just finish it there. I think they dropped the ball big time! The worst experience tonight, this was my second time going and I am just appalled by what we were served! We ordered wings and they tasted like the frozen ones that were fired and topped with sauce. The penne vodka tasted so bad! It was something that looked like it was reheated from ShopRite. The chicken in the pasta was not fresh either, and was the precooked chicken chunks in it. I will not be going back! Waste of money, time, and a night out for dinner. I was so excited to see the brick oven, but the head chef must've taken a break today. My margherita pizza was very bland. I couldn't taste salt in the dough, nor in the margherita sauce. Moreso, the margherita sauce was too watery, and mozzerella slices were too thick. Picking up a slice, the overfill of sauce drips, making the experience disappointing. One end of the pizza was cooked too long on the hot end, pretty burnt. Didn't look like the nice symmetrical pizza I see on their Instagram posts, as mine was lopsided looking. The arancini balls made up for this experience. Very good, love the vodka sauce and meat stuffing, standard. I may give this place a try again, as their penne vodka with shrimp and octopus look really good. Cozy little bar with a total local feel but with not so local prices, at eight dollars for a draft a 'flat tire' this is not gonna make my rotation. I had a taste for spice that only fra'diavalo over seafood and pasta could satisfy. I noticed they only shrimp but the bartender Rob was nice enough to add mussels calamari and clams but he also said there would be scallops in it, which it was not and I made that clear again after the meal arrived and he did not bring me out any Scallops or make any adjustments including perhaps a canoli which he was attempting to sell me after the fact. A fail. The sauce wasn't quite as spicy and watery what had a nice tomato chunks in it. When it comes to Fra'diavalo was looking for mouth burning, it did not burn which is what I yearned for, I did ask for extra spicy while ordering, which was not accommodated. It came with some bread and Italian dressing in the salad which was tasty but they put far too much dressing on it, I had to rinse out the lettuce on a napkin. The service was very personable the place is fairly clean but there were some missing things that threw me. I had discussed with him the price of domestic beer which he said was around $3.50 and two dollars on Monday which is a good deal but I tried a fat tire and he never told me it was eight dollars, eight dollars? when I got the bill I also noticed $1.50 was added for credit card which was never mentioned as well, after eight dollar drafts they're also going to add $1.50 for credit card? you got to be kidding me? I left satiated from the food but I doubt I'll be back anytime soon, I can't afford it. read more

Wow! A hidden gem in the heart of south plainfield, this made to order scratch kitchen rustic restaurant is to die for!! True italian dishes from scratch and made by the owner himself, amazing chef All the pizza selections are insane! I ordered the diavolo because the sopresetta and honey drizzle caught my eye, and i was not disappointed, one of the most delicious pizzas i've ever had. I also tried the meat and cheese board, which was incredible, extremely fresh complete with burrata and fresh mozzarella; also fresh baked bread and prosciutto sliced very thin...drool To end it all i shared the chicken parm which came with ziti and salad,yum! The owner was great, he brought us over complimentary drinks for having to wait, as they were swamped on a Friday night (even though we weren't waiting long at all). Everything we ordered was delicious. The calamari appetizer was crispy and tasteful. The buffalo wings were AMAZING - I have very high expectations when it comes to wings and these were cooked just right and had the perfect amount of spice. The "Big Plates" really do live up to their name. I ordered the chicken parmigiana that came with penne vodka and a house salad. For only $18, my meal could of served 2-3 people. First time here. Place is like a locals bar with a small dining area with about 8 tables. Weekends they have a larger dining room. Food was decent. The veal was very tough on two dishes, i wouldnt get it if i were you. Chicken parm was good. Shrimp francaise was good. Be aware entrees come with salads, if you want a specific dressing make sure you let them know or you will just get a salad put in front of you with balsamic on it.the waitress never told us the entrees came with salad and bread as per the menu(we never got any bread) we asked for a spoon 4 times and she just ghosted us and never brought one so we used a dinner fork to stir the cup. Pitiful. After salads were done nobody took the empty bowls, they just brought out the dinners and tried cramming them all on this little table between the empty salad bowls. We were like wtf? Why wouldnt you just take the empties first to have enough room for the dinner plates? Must be a south plainfield thing. Maybe its just how it is there and we arent used to it. You almost felt like yelling across the bar to the waitress but that would have really been rude to the other customers. Anyway stranded with a overcrowded table(they bring the pasta in separate bowls for each meal instead of one plate so suddenly it looks like enough food for 8 instead of four but large portions are a plus. Waitress never returned with the spoon which at that point we were all laughing about it, she just hates working there. She never returned to see if we needed anything or if the meals were ok,2 werent as the veal was like leather, maybe she was like oh crap they got the veal, i better not go over there.dont get veal here, its not good quality, its chewy, tough and grizzly. Everything veal shouldnt be. Maybe play it safe with pasta or pizza. I might go back again but ill try the pizza. They need to train their waitress to be friendlier and not blow off customers.
