The location of this restaurant is likely what draws people in -- not the food or the service. We ended up here simply because it was the closest option and my friend was extremely hungry. In hindsight, an extra eight-minute walk would have offered us far better quality. This is not the fresh, flavorful Italian cuisine one hopes for. The tomatoes were not fresh, the burrata was mediocre, and even the bread was disappointing -- far from the delicious standard one expects in Italy. We started with salads, which arrived fairly quickly, but our main courses took an unusually long time and were not worth the wait. My friend ordered a steak that was mostly fat with very little actual meat. I chose the mushroom risotto special, which unfortunately was underwhelming -- I've had much better versions back home in the United States. Overall, the experience was disappointing, and I would not choose to dine here again. The location may be convenient, but the food and service fall far short of expectations. read more

The food is good but the service is not up to par. Most of the waiters just walk around and only the busboys do all the work. My son asked for a glass of water and one waiter said no and signaled to wait for another waiter. I only saw one waiter being attentive to his table. They are so unfriendly towards tourists and try to pull away even before you have the chance to ask them a question or put in an order. After walking for hours in the blazing heat, this restaurant is conveniently located in the center of Rome, just few blocks away from the coliseum and train station (along with other monuments nearby). Perfect to stop by for a cold beer and enjoy in their patio area, plus free wifi available. Although not pictured, I ordered their veggie lasagna and my goodness, it was absolute perfection. OK, we just walked out of the Colosseum, and you see the closest restaurant there. Then, look at the yummy looking menu and you choose to go to this restaurant. Then, you decide to go with the steak, but then it turns out the taste awful! So, you decide to order a pizza instead. But then when they give you your pizza. It looks really good actually was , until right when I took a bite all the pizza came off. To be honest, I would've walk the extra mile! The service was pretty good. If you're looking for a cafe with food & beverages at decent prices near the Colosseum, I recommend this place! Usually restaurants & other businesses are tourist traps that are located near historical places, whereas their quality isn't as good because they don't need to be in order to attract customers. My friend did run into a local cafe near the Colosseum that wasn't good, and they were overpriced too. We were lucky to find Angelino ai Fori, as they were a good place to grab a snack. The day of our tour, we had a break from the Colosseum & the Roman Forum. I used Yelp to try and find a good local cafe during our break, and we found this one! Their prices were fair and the quality of their food & beverages was pretty good; although they are Cash Only. They also have a very nice & clean bathroom too. Overall I would give them 3.5-stars for the quality of their food & beverage, and 4-stars for their ambiance & prices. The next time I visit the Colosseum, I will definitely make another visit to Angelino ai Fori again. read more

We went in to grab lunch, not really expecting much since this restaurant was near the Colleseum. However, it did not disappoint. The outside seating area is large, but under a roof, so every table is in the shade. Seating was fast, and we got our drinks quickly. Staff are circulating all the time, so there is always someone around if you need something, even if that something is the most massive bees I've ever seen (they have an electric tennis racket for getting rid of them) On to the food. We start d with ham and melon. You can't really go wrong here. The melon was nice and sweet, and the ham nice and salty. I then opted for the carbonata. It sounded like they made the pasta in house, the sauce was bright yellow (hello egg), and the bacon was small, crispy, and salty. This was a really good dish. We ended with cappuccino. We got there at 11:30 (lunch isn't served til noon most places) but we went ahead and ordered a hot ham & cheese sandwich and drinks. We found it here at a cafe stand. They also serve coffee here and you can opt for standing room service or sit down service on the patio. You go inside and pay at the register and then they will assist you outside where you can pick the flavors. I chose 2 (chocolate and egg custard) on a cone. For our first taste of gelato, it wasn't bad. We were probably the only two people having gelato on a 50 degree partly cloudy day in Rome but we didn't care. We had reservations at a place different from this one, but we were right by the Coliseum and didn't feel like trekking across town, so we settled on Angelino which is a block from the Coliseum. There's no hiding it. This place *is* a tourist trap. The question is, is there such a thing as a "good" tourist trap? A place that caters to tourists but still serves up tasty food? ...those questions running through my head as we got seated. There's a huge, I have to admit, *inviting* patio out front with some big trees growing through the patio. I don't even know if there is inside seating - I guess there must be, but everybody seems to be sitting outside. We started out with the: FRITTO MISTO (4/5) Mixed shrimp and calamari - thin batter and pretty good, a little tough though. MARGHERITA PIZZA (4/5) The ingredients tasted pretty fresh and it wasn't soggy. Thin crust that tasted all right. CARBONARA (3/5) This was a different type of Carbonara that I'm used to. The sauce was grainy a bit - not sure if that was a mistake or deliberate on the part of the chef. In any case, I didn't care for the sauce - maybe the egg curdled a bit in the sauce?? I was hungry and I ended up eating it, trying to think positive and tell myself that it's not bad, just a different way of doing Carbonara. LA MATRICIANA (4/5) Again, not a bad version. My daughter's dish and she didn't complain and I took a bite and it seem all right. Actually, I think she liked the dished and *I* was the one who thought it was "all right". For me the theme of this place is just that - all right. I would say leaning more to the good side, than the bad. This place is crowded all the time when you walk by. I think it appeals to the tourists because of the good patio space and close location to the Coliseum. I don't think people are looking for awesome food here, they kind of understand it's that kind of restaurant that serves high volume of decent food. If it wasn't our last night in Italy, I might have enjoyed the food more, maybe a lunch as we did some sightseeing at the Coliseum. This place is good for a quick lunch, maybe to share a pasta after seeing the Coliseum or maybe to take a break from walking, rest and drinks. I wouldn't plan a dinner here. read more

I was slightly concerned because I thought that the restaurant might be a tourist trap but the food was actually really good. My boyfriend and I definitely enjoyed our meals, the dessert was sooo yummy. One of the best meals we had while in Italy. So happy we stopped by.
