This place is crazy busy, which makes sense given the location; but they are able to get you seated relatively quickly. Service is great and our waiter was incredibly friendly. It definitely gives the vibe of a family-owned restaurant as everybody is joking with one another. Food is incredibly fast given how many people they are serving, and the quality of food although not the absolute best, is still amazing especially for the price. We had the artichoke, which was maybe one of the better ones we've had all trip. As well as the ravioli, a pizza, and grilled pork. The pork was my personal favorite as it was cooked perfectly. After visiting the nearby Colosseum, I chose Luzzi for dinner choosing to sit outside on the street but they also have inside seating too. This is a popular and busy casual restaurant. I ordered two items from the Primi part of the menu. Cacio e Pepe €9 to be followed by noodles and mushrooms €8.50. Yes it was going to be a pasta heavy meal. The bread basket arrived and the first thing I noticed was that the bread here in Rome was better tasting than in Firenze. The spaghetti, cheese and pepper dish arrive first and it was delicious. Cacio e Pepe is so simple and yet so good. Italian comfort food at its best. Later the mushroom pasta dish arrived. The ribbon noodles and mushroom pieces in their sauce were equally satisfying. The pasta here in Italy is first rate as you would expect and here at Luzzi they do not disappoint. The table service was good too. First of all - we asked for a cup of ice and we got one. (No one serves ice with your water.) It was so hot, that it immediately improved the situation as we were not able to get a table outside. I went here while in Rome because it was close to our hotel. We made a reservation (I highly recommend because it's busy). The house white wine was really good and cheap. Food was horrible. I rarely leave reviews but this place is worthy of a review and it's a bad one. Somehow managed to find the worst pasta in all of Italy. We had the Amatriciana (one of Rome's dishes) and tasted like rage and cheap boxed noodles and also had the Cacio e Pepe and it was as dry and overly salted. Wine was trash and the "extra virgin" olive oil they served was a blend of oils imported from the EU. Isn't one of the things Italy is most known for its wine and olives? How do you screw that up? Definitely a tourist trap. They are out to rip off tourists with mediocre - bad to food. For lunch, I wandered around the area by the Colosseum to find a place to eat. While walking down one of the streets, a man in a chef outfit was standing outside his restaurant ready to speak to people to encourage them to eat there. This was pretty common for many restaurants in the area hoping to get tourists to eat there. However, this man was extra aggressive, following me down along the remainder of the block saying "PIZZA! PASTA!" in broken English in hopes of enticing me. I was not impressed and ignored him. Getting desperate, after wandering around a bit longer, I see a restaurant with outdoor dining that seems to have locals dining outdoors. Hungry, I take a seat, only to realize later into the meal that this was the same place with the in-your-face chef! My mistake for not being more wary of my surroundings. The menu I received had both Italian and English for each of the dishes. Locals appear to receive a different menu with only Italian; I'm unsure if they also receive better service and food, but I wouldn't understand why they would dine here if they didn't. Overall prices were pretty reasonable if not cheap. However I was very disappointed to see the little disclaimer at the bottom of the page for pizza saying that all pizzas served from 12am to 7pm are precooked or frozen. Essentially, if you order pizza there for lunch or early dinner, you're not going to receive a fresh pizza! Pizza was out of the question and feeling and about the restaurant choice, ended up getting raviolis, lasagna with meat sauce, and bruschetta al prosciutto. Food came in timely manner, and everything appeared to match the item that was ordered. That's where the positives end. All the food was warm, not hot. Presentation was poor overall; although the bruschetta al prosciutto appeared fine, the flavor of the meat and the bread was overall un memorable. Ravioli's presentation was not disgusting but not great. The lasagna looked like it was thrown onto the plate without care. The ravioli and the lasagna were both bland; both were about the quality I would expected from instant/packaged equivalents that I could make at home. Certainly not a great meal out in the US, let alone in ITALY. The locals at this restaurant declined the bread basket when it was offered to them, so it is most likely for a charge. This is not uncommon at Italian restaurants, but when if it is offered to you, feel free to decline it. Of all the meals, I've had in Italy, this is by far the worst. Afterward, I went and had a much better second lunch from a bakery down the street. Do NOT waste a meal eating here. The food is edible, but with all the amazing food in Rome, edible is far from being enough! read more

My friend and I was fooled by how many people were there and ignored the latest bad reviews, but trust me, this place has the worst customer service unless the waiter actually knows the guest. We just got ignored for ten minutes while standing outside waiting to talk to someone. This spot is simple, homie, and so Roman with a little bit of touristy. As we entered, we greeted the guy asking him for a table for 4. We used simple Italian sayings and he spoke back to us in English. We laughed, and they started serving our table with plates, cups, and we ordered mineral water with gas or fizzy water. The fizzy water was so good. I don't like mineral water in the states becuase it tastes like rocks, but here, it's so simple, and light, and just right. The customer service is so Italian. Remember, Italian customer service is NOT like the states. The United States treat you like queens and kings but here, the more Italian it is, the more simple and straight forward they are. Expect to feel at home here. I mean, it is a very simple restaurant so expect that kind of service. But we enjoyed our customer service. We asked a few things from the menu, we asked how to say a few things in Italian, and then one of the staff smiled at us across the room, and made a joke to comment on what we said earlier! Just like home!! I actually loved it. So the pizza is really cheesy which I liked. The mozzarella and vegetable pizza had 3 different types of vegetables, eggplant, bell pepper and another I didn't recognize. We all loved it. That crust was soooo crunchy...mmm. The mussels and clam pasta was a hit too. I don't like mussels or clams back home but here, it wasn't fishy or chewy so they must be better quality that what I normally have. I do recommend this spot but please have realizations expectations as far as the service. Just a few blocks away from the Colosseum, Luzzi is a mediocre tourist trap of a restaurant owned by sleazy businessmen, and easily the worst restaurant I visited during my weeklong trip in Italy. When we arrived, I was happy to see that the restaurant was packed with gregarious Italian locals. The problem was that this was the "better" Luzzi. Our snappy host told us to wait 5 minutes, and then led us a block down the street to another space called Luzzi--let's call this "Bad Luzzi". Same name, same menu, but we suspected something was up when we saw that everyone in "Bad Luzzi" was non-Italian speaking tourists. After tasting the bland, overpriced plates they dare call authentic, our suspicions were confirmed. We fell into their trap. Outside, the Italian locals were served larger portions and aesthetically pleasing dishes. Inside, well.... take a look at my photos and judge yourself. Escalope was dry, tough, and disgusting. Margherita pizza tasted like a reheated frozen DiGiorno pie. Salmon pasta was the ultimate disaster, flavorless with a few microscopic bits of salmon sparsely scattered throughout. I enjoyed every single meal here in Italy, except this one. This killed the entire mood of my vacation spent with my dear friends. I've read a lot of reviews and other places about the bad service. Well, here's my experience.... When we first sat down, we behaved like every tourist wanting to order right away and were being ignored. Then I decided....hey I'm on vacation and not in a hurry to go anywhere so what's the rush? The nice young man did come and ask if we wanted something to drink....for 2 euros we get half a litre of house wine, or 2.5 euros for water... such tough decision....wine it is! Then we relaxed, talked about our day, where we've been, looking at our pictures while drinking our absolutely amazing wine. By the time the waitress came we were well relaxed and thoroughly entertained by the loud tourists next to us complaining about something or another. The first few things we ordered (noodles with mushroom, artichoke) was fine but as soon as we ordered Oxtail Roman style the waitress' eyes lighted up so we though....must be good. Let's just say we ordered 2nd's...the intense wine and tomato's flavour.....'nuff said! She was so pleased we raved about it and that smile no other patrons saw was coming out in spades! Everything else weren't bad but they are what you'd expect fast food Roman style. When I got up to pay, she charged me 30 euros....we had 2 helpings of Oxtail (list at 10.5 Euros each), pasta, artichoke, wine and bread (which we didn't even eat but i read on the menu there's a charge for it). Should be at least 45 euros +.... No way it added up to 30 Euros but she just kept smiling at me saying something in Italian about no charge so I just went with it and gave her a good tip. It's Day 1 in Rome but value for money this meal beats everything else so far. Sorry - no picture of the oxtail Roman style....we ate it all before we realized we didn't take one. The food here is excellent, but service is absolutely horrible. We were seated right away, but waited around 20 minutes before a menu was handed to us. Even after making eye contact with the server multiple times and asking for a menu, we still waited and waited. Then another 40 minutes went by before our order was even taken. Our appetizer was given after the entrees. The house wine (which btw was awful) took another 20 minutes to be served. Staff were fighting with each other in front of customers, but their tempers quickly cooled off. Anyway, about the food. Linguine with mushrooms was initially just ok. Once they added shredded mozzarella, the story changed. The dish then became one of the best meals I had in Italy - hands down. Their bread was awesome. Our appetizer was served after the entree lol, but we had to remind the server we ordered it. The rabe (cicoria ripassata) was mediocre. Overall, I'd come here again but not super hungry.
