Based on Angelo's positive yelp reviews, and it's relative proximity to home, Saturday dinner became pizza night. Immediately walking into Angelo's you sense an old-school pizzeria atmosphere and instantly I got the smell of pizzas getting baked in the ovens. I decided on a large Margherita pie (my favorite style of pizza) and Angelo's Grilled Portobello Salad. Upon arriving at home and opening the box, what I saw did not look much like a traditional Margherita pizza. Calling Angelo's about my concerns, I spoke to the young man who also took my order in the restaurant, and referenced my order; describing what I saw in my pizza. He said that's how Angelo's make their Margherita. Sorry, but what I received should NOT be called a Margherita. The components of what makes up a Margherita pizza (in conjunction with the description on their own menu listing plum tomatoes, fresh mozzarella, fresh basil, and parmigiano reggiano) just did not match. If it were a regular plain pizza, Angelo's "Margherita" would be fine; it had a nice crust, the sauce was solid, and the cheese was good too, but it lacked most things attributed to a Margherita. I'm still zooming in on my photo to try to spot the basil. The Grilled Portobello Salad was quite tasty, as the Arugula, tomatoes, olives, and red onion were all fresh, but I did not notice any of the listed grilled peppers Considering the plethora of available pizzerias in the area, my first experience at Angelo's will probably be my last. read more

Easily the best Italian restaurant I have eaten at in decades! Tonight I ordered their Veal Saltimbocca and Eggplant Rollatini. For starters, I am very particular about how veal is cooked. It needs to be soft and tender with a quality flavor from the meat. Their chefs know how to prepare a "delicate", yet flavorful cutlet. When I can slice the meat with the edge of a fork by just leaning on the meat, I know I have quality there. Add to that the exquisitely steamed spinach which wilted just slightly yet gave an almost sublime flavor to the penne along with the fresh and rich mushrooms for the gravy and you have an excellent dish. But the prosciutto gave a light saltiness that enlivened the meal. The penne base was lightly firmed as it should be. There was neither hard nor mealy. This gave a great balance to the overall plate. Definitely this is an entree I will order again. The eggplant rollatini was equally scrumptious! For starters, the eggplant was cooked expertly with just enough firmness to each slice that ensured there was a distinction to its position in the entree. The sauce gave a distinct flavor with each of the spices being distinctive, but not overpowering of the others. The cheeses were also comforting with their own value in the meal. This was served on another base of penne. Once more the pasta offered a great balance that was lightly firm. The side of garlic knots made the meals complete. Just a brief warming for 15 seconds on medium in the microwave (I was traveling a good distance with these meals before consuming them) made for warm, soft, and heavenly poppers I would order on their own. In all, this was one of the most exquisite, legitimate Italian meals I have had in quite some time. The flavors and satisfaction made the trip I took to get these entrees well worth it! read more

Angelo's is a decent pizza place. I typically order subs and pasta here, although I've stopped in for pizza as well. They have really good soups - broccoli cheddar is good, French onion is good... my only gripe is their pasta is weird / hit-or-miss. Their bolognese is unlike any other place I've ever tried... there's hardly any tomato sauce, and it's literally a ton of dry ground beef and giant chopped carrots and peas. It's very dry and bland. Same with shrimp scampi and francese - dry, needs flavor. Lobster ravioli is great one day, but the next time it's kind of seafood-y in taste. Garlic knots are good, need salt though. Sandwiches are okay, but the bread is kind of "fake", can't put my finger on it. Other thoughts: people are friendly, menu is expensive for what you get. Convenient location. read more

The dining room has a dozen round tables, corner windows with no shades at all, sun warm coming through the window today with just a fan, no air-conditioning. Tried Angelo's for the first time, and I must say I was very pleased. I had the ranch grilled chicken salad and it was so good! I'm not big on bacon in my salad but gave it a shot and I have no regrets. My nephew had the Santa Fe sandwich and loved it. Meatballs were also really good. I warmed up some of their garlic knots when I got home and I used it to spoon the sauce from the meatballs (I know, I'm brilliant, right?). The only downside is they don't deliver to Keyport, but they are worth picking up. The gentleman behind the counter had one of his guys carry my order to my car...like a true gentleman. I recently found Angelo's (Thank you, Yelp.) A few weeks ago I tried calamari in red sauce, a side of broccoli rabe and veal parm- all good, generous portions. I went back today and got a white pizza and an eggplant pizza. That clinched it for me. My wife liked the white pizza a lot. I thought the eggplant pie ranks among the best pizza I have ever had anywhere, including New York and Italy. The crust was perfectly done and very tasty. The eggplant was big chunks, not thin over-breaded slices you get elsewhere. The cheese was fine and the sauce was really good, as well. Just perfect. The staff was friendly, as well. Their sandwich menu looks inviting, and maybe I'll get around to it eventually. This is so much better than cheap chain pizza that it will be a revelation if that's all you have ever had.
