HOW does this place have such positive reviews? HOW?! I had one of the most disappointing meals I've had in a long time at this restaurant... and I most definitely won't be back. Quick thoughts: 1. Upon entering the restaurant, there was an odd smell... something either musty, or like food that wasn't exactly fresh. 2. The decor is VERY dated. 3. Server wasn't especially friendly. Considering there was basically nobody IN the restaurant (maybe 2 other groups during the time my mother and I were in the restaurant for lunch), it didn't seem like an especially demanding time... not sure what the issue was. 4. All food seemed like it came out of a can, box, or some other manner of being pre-prepared. 5. The sauce on top of my linguine with red clam sauce left A LOT to be desired... and the entire bottom of my bowl was watery nothingness. 6. The clams in my linguine with red clam sauce did not smell appealing... like they had been from a can, but left on the counter for an extended period of time and were starting to go bad. Incredibly unappealing. The food here is relatively cheap, and that's one of the only benefits... because there's no way people should be paying more than a couple dollars for a dish at this place. Though I took my food to go, I opened it upon getting home and immediately thought to myself "Nope. Not going to eat any of this" and threw it away (not something I like doing). Remains one of the best locations for plentiful, excellent, and reliable meals. They are still take-out only, but food is available fast and ready when promised. Easy pickup! Menu is full of classic Italian dishes made with old-school flavors and hard work. The kitchen is open to watch when picking up flood- staff is busy, and the premises are always immaculate. I came here previously for a dinner with friends and family before a wedding. We ordered a large meal and almost everyone got their famous sauce. I honestly can't taste the difference from a canned marinara. I don't know if this place has changed hands or what but the food is mediocre. It's either very bland or extremely salty. I got fried cheeseballs or something and the breading on them was flavorful, the only good thing I have to say about the food. The service here is very nice, even for take out. Even when the servers are stressed, they take their time to greet you. I got my friend a chicken parmesan to go and it was so drowned in sauce, it was completely soggy by the time it got to him. The chicken was also really dry which was unfortunate. The restaurant has a nice, homey feel. It's comforting and there's usually a good amount of guests. That old gent taking your name? Mr. A. himself. Yeah, that's him on the wall, too, in that yellowed clipping from the Post-Standard from the '70's (not so grey back then). A 36 hours in Syracuse article from the N-Y Times on the all lists Angotti's as a "must see" stop (I think the article was from '77, amazingly). This is just the checkered tablecloth/red sauce joint you've been hoping to find. Sweet and sassy and 100% pro waitress Chrissie took perfect care of us. Everything's good, so I'm not going to list out a favorite. A funky spot on funky Burnet st., but don't let that put you off. We are from this area and go back often to visit family and this restaurant is always on our hit list. We are currently in Texas and Italian food is a sad joke down here even the decebt places have nothing on northern Italian food. I recommend the chicken parmesan, oh man it's simply delicious! It is simple ingredients, simple dish but it's oh so YUM! The restaurant is rather small and homely, plan to get there early as there's often a standing line to get in. There are stairs to get to the main dining are so it's something to keep in mind for thoes who have limited mobility, that being said there are two booths at ground level but I'm not sure if a wheelchair would fit, if I needed to fit one, I would call ahead and find out what staff suggest, they may have another option that I did not see. Private parking lot next to the building so it's easy to find parking. If your on the fence about this place, please try it, it's one of my favorites! read more

This is my go to Italian place. My family frequents this restaurant and I ALWAYS recommend it. The place is very casual, with large portions, low prices (a family of four can eat for less than $50) it ain't fancy, but you know you're going to get a good meal. The good: The food and prices are great. The red sauce is seriously the best I've ever eaten. The people that work here are almost always nice, and treat you well. I LOVE the eggplant Parmesan (only available Thursday through Saturday). My wife always gets the gnocchi and loves it. The bad: like I said it is a very casual place. It's kind of like going to Nona's house for dinner so don't expect candles at you table and a gentleman playing the accordion table side. For me the sauce is amazing, but I definitely would say it is salty. For me, I would sell a child for the recipe, but I could see where some may not like that. It doesn't taste salty when you eat it, but you can tell a few hours later that you ate something seriously salty. In summation: I love this place. This place is super cheap, and good for the price. Should you stop in if you're on a weekend-long visit and looking for the best Syracuse has to offer? Well, no. No shit. If you're hungry and want two meals worth of food for under ten bucks, you can't do much better. We got the baked ziti with ricotta (7.95) and lasagna (6.95) and ate about half of each. The pizzas looked great and are under ten bucks for a large as well. Service was attentive and friendly. I disregard a lot of Yelp reviews when it comes to describing service. If you can't hide the fact that you're an insufferable pretentious douche in a short Yelp review, your server was also probably more than aware of how terrible you are and they probably treated you accordingly. Everyone at Angotti's made sure to say "hi" or "bye" and the owner was standing around making sure everything went smoothly. A long time Syracuse Italian tradition with some quirks. Pros: The portions here are enormous! Seriously, I've never left without a takeout box. Pretty large selection of italian food with daily specials thrown in. Rarely is there a long wait. Also, Boylan's sodas which is always a plus. Cons: To begin with, Angotti's has precisely zero ambiance, which they seems to really own and celebrate but putting up newspaper clippings that say as much. So don't take your date out here for a romantic evening. Second, quantity of food doesn't make up for quality. It's hit or miss. When it's good, it's really good. When it's bad it's pretty bad. Most of the time it's a good experience taste wise. The wait staff, however, seems constantly stressed and disinterested in making you feel welcome. I wish all of them in their the-dyed "uniforms" were just more cheery. Lastly it's in an area of town some might not call "the best" So make sure you park nearby and lock your doors. Taken as a whole, Angotti's is a solid bet for decent Italian food. Bring the kids on account of being able to feed three of them with a standard entrée. This place gets 5 stars just based on the food. I will say, at first our waitress was a little rigid and lacked a smile, but as we starting to joke with her and ordered she lightened up. The food was large, full of flavor and just perfect. I do not love super sweet sauce, but this sauce was just the right amount of sweet. Items our party ordered: Meatloaf, spaghetti and meatballs, chicken parm, eggplant roll, and stuffed shells. Everyone gave the food a perfect score. This is a hidden gem. It is family owned and operated and a favorite of the locals. I walked in. And at first I didn't know what to make of the place.. The atmosphere isn't the best, but the server Andrew was so sweet and cool. They didn't have sweet tea and he sweetened it for me so I didn't have to! He was on top of the refills as well. My food was brought to me in a timely manner and it tasted ok. I guess I'm pretty confused about all of these reviews. When I asked the server if each item I was considering was homemade, the answer was always no. No to the sauce, no to the pasta, no to the everything. Just always no. If I wanted to eat store-bought sauce from a jar, I would do it. But I don't want that, so I don't do it. Disclaimer: I am not Italian (when I was younger I thought I was, but then I had therapy) but I like Italian food. Like those cliched movies where the family sits around the big table,,,little kids fighting for the biggest meatballs, dad and grandpa heaping piles and piles of food on their plates while mama and the aunts talk too loudly about "that woman from down the street". The radio and television playing in the background as I try to kick my sister under the table. That's Angotti's. Angotti's feels like family. They're not my family (I told you, I'm not Italian) but I'm treated like family every time I go. Nana sits in the corner, welcoming me with a big smile and a wave. The big screen television is broadcasting some sporting event. Up the narrow stairs of the (very small) restaurant, there are more tables...close together, inviting conversation. Walking in, you're greeted with the strong smells of Italian cooking: oregano, tomato paste, loud chatter, love. The restaurant is never not packed, parking is always an issue, though they have a parking lot next to their small abode...it's never enough. Sometimes cars are double parked...just a quick in and out, because Angotti's has take-out, too. Again, I'm not Italian and I'm not related to a single Angotti, but their food is the best I've ever had. From the baked ziti to the pizzia...it's simply the best I've ever had. Nothing else compares. Just go. That's all I can say. One more thing: they don't deliver. Why??? And they have weirdo hours (like they know how good they are and can just close for several hours/days)...depriving me of their yummy goodness. All said, they're more than worth the trek. read more

In Syracuse, fortunately, we have a myriad of fine and even great Italian Restaurants. This is NOT one of them. This place has been around over 30 years, and I can't understand why. Mr. Angotti is a fine gentleman who has run the place forever, but his wait staff is, for the most part, horrendous. We were going to a nearby show, so thought we'd try it, (against advice). We got there two hours before the show, to give ourselves plenty of time-the place is small. We had to wait in line, single file, in a narrow hallway, including a half flight of stairs. No place to sit down, and no bar! Despite the fact Yelp lists them as doing so, they don't take reservations. After 40 minutes of waiting we finally were seated. Only to wait ten minutes before we saw a waitress with a menu. She re-appeared after another ten minutes to take our order. We waited another ten minutes for the chicken pastina soup. Soup was both very bland and very much room temperature, and lacked any chicken, just some broth. The antipasto was ok. We waited, and we waited some more. It was over an hour from when we sat down to get our entrees, and then only because we grabbed a passing waitress (our 's had disappeared for at least the last half hour) and complained. The passing waitress went down (kitchen is on ground level, seating one flight up) and returned to assure us food was on the way. She remarked: "when you order soup and antipasto, we don't serve your food till you are ready" duh! I told her we have been "ready" for 45 minutes. When our original waitress did appear with the food, in typical "blame the victim" mode she chided us for not telling her we were in a rush. I said we weren't in a rush when we sat down, we had an hour and 15 minutes to get our food and eat it. She explained "Well we do a lot of take out, and we're very busy and this is how we do it. We never ate one forkful, we put it in the cartons that she literally "threw" at us and we took it with us. If you have read any of my other reviews, you will see I'm patient and usually can find something good in every restaurant. Not this one. Skip it. If you are on a budget go to Dominick's or Luigi's. If you want to step up a little Francesca's and Asti's are both good. Delmonico's and Strada Mia are also fine as is Pascale's up at Drumlins Country Club. The best are Santangelo's and Vito's.
