I found this place on my phone and I live in Manhattan and I decided to come to New Jersey to save money on cat dentistry which is frightfully expensive in New York City. I was happy to see that the entry price was nearly $1000 cheaper than Manhattan. I booked the appointment. I even came back for the required bloodwork before the dental appointment as it was even cheaper than in New York City for that as well. Brought my cat for the visit today, called before I came and no one said anything about the wait even after arrival, waited 40 mins with no one even checking if we are ok. It was hectic with multiple dogs around and my cat started getting fever. Week before that I asked them to repeat the blood for my visit and they refused even though lab work doesn't require Dr only tech, but they said because they injured his leg before that he couldn't step on it they can't take him. So I came back for the Dr risking the health of my pet for a week. We left without a visit even though they knew about urgency of FIP condition, the need of blood test, transfusion or fluids, and no one even gave us a call. Now I'm assuming they just afraid to be sued and kept making me wait on purpose. I would not recommend this place, the receptionist is rude, the techs are incompetent, and the Dr is young, but I was surprised he never even called back. No compassion here, poor animals. read more

My cat had her first appointment on October 5th for a check-up and full lab work (Superchem, CBC, T4, and Ova & Parasite). When we returned on October 23rd just for her vaccines, the clinic repeated the exact same tests without informing me, without my written approval or signature, and without reviewing her medical history. To this day, I have never received any of the lab results -- not from the first visit nor the second one. There's no email contact for follow-up, and it's very concerning to pay for tests that were repeated unnecessarily and possibly not even performed correctly. Sadly this practice has been sold to Pet Vet Care Centers and Dr. Freedman will be retiring soon. His dental specialist recently resigned and the front desk admitted a "staffing crisis." Dr. Tierney is excellent, but I'm not sure how much longer he will stay given the new ownership. Their customer service has gone to pot, and instead of assuring me they would send in my monthly (5+ years) renewal for my dog's controlled substance (antiseizure medication), they simply stated 'we must follow proper protocol and place the prescription on a doctor's desk that even goes for preventatives and food (sic). We have several clients with pets on chronic controlled substance medications to which we follow the same protocol and call into the pharmacy with either a generous amount or additional refills or they call with appropriate time. Saturday's are a short day and just like any other day a busy day especially when we are short staffed. That being said I do not expect you to be compassionate about our staffing crisis or being overwhelmed" adding again ". On top of it, they continued by sending me - a 10+ year customer who has treated multiple dogs, referred many other clients, and spent thousands of dollars - a letter explaining why I was wrong. Sorry, the customer is always right. And your business is sadly failing. read more

I went to this vet for over 25 years and over five dogs were well treated there until now, they refused an appointment for my little guy who had been going to them for over ten years, he is in congestive heart failure. I have been going there for about 11 yrs, and have always received outstanding caring service...but recently on one of the saddest days of my life I had to face the jolting reality that my beautiful 15 yr old pup Rizzo was at the end of her life..I was in a full on panic, Left a message for them over night and Amina called me as soon as they Opened , I rushed right in, Dr Lang was so incredibly caring and kind. We understood together that it was time to say goodbye . And so begun the process .The love, patience and absolute kindness I received from both Amina and Dr Lang in helping me to make all the decisions that go with this dreaded event, still brings tears to my eyes. They were Angels on Earth when I needed them most. Rizzo was cremated and I picked up her remains there as well, a week later . Everything was so Beautifully and respectfully done. Do not go to this vet if you want to travel with your animal in the future or want loving people actually passionate about their jobs taking care of your pet. The staff here is either misinformed or maybe they just do not care enough to do things right. For example: First they gave us incorrect and completely false information of what was required for us to fly with our dog, telling us that they cannot issue the international health certificate until these additional tests were done. Our dog already had all the necessary vaccinations and other health criteria that is actually needed to travel with a dog, They said that the country we were flying to required a bunch of additional tests to check if the vaccinations they gave actually worked (like an antibody test) at the time i decided to take the vet's word for it as I was not familiar with the process and was not about to risk it. Turns out they just lied to us and those tests were not required but optional and they made us unnecessarily spend thousands of dollars for nothing. I only found out because of another problem they made us go through during this same process where after the payment was processed for 1) the tests 2) expedited testing and shipping by the lab (that they told us we should get) the vet tells us that we still WOULDN'T be able to travel with our dog because the test would regardless NOT come in time. Like why did you suggest it then and why did I just pay for the expedited testing??? They lacked full transparency until they got the money to tell us that even if the papers would come in time, they would not be able to write the international certificate as it takes them 10 days to process. As a result, I was so scared that I couldn't take my dog so I started to do extra digging on my own to look into the actual government pages to see if there was another way. Turned out the country did not actually require any of of these documents based on their government website, even though the first Google result gave wrong info. I'm assuming they based their requirement conclusions off of this first result (which was a random blog post from an untrustworthy source) full of made up and false requirements. If they took a minute reading the second link which is the actual government's website or USDA (which is what you expect a vet to do as it is a part of their job). Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if it was them who wrote that false blog post under a new domain to charge their clients thousands more if the client (like me) first consulted their vet and took their word for it. Always check the country's government website, USA governments website, and that country's consulate's website before agreeing to any procedures or tests this vet is not suggesting but saying is required. 2. Most people working there don't love animals nor are passionate about their jobs. They will be super kind and nice to you the very first time you go to them as a vet, but don't be fooled by it, it's a fescade to get that new client. It honestly looks like they hate every minute of working there and you only recognize it after your second visit. like you can truly see it in their faces and they are horrible with empathy when it comes to handling your dog. Although they don't always allow you to go back with them, in an instance where we did, the lady was so aggressive and careless over my dog's treatment and how she was handling its body during it. My dog was in pain and she really hurt my baby's eye. Like NO. They do the bare minimum and while doing that they are aggressive. We've been bringing our pets to this office for over 20 years - since the wonderful veterinarian Dr Friedman opened the location. and was tending to the animals personally. it's truly a shame what they've done to his practice. it's no surprise they've lost great veterinarians like Dr Daniel Tierney to other, more humane practices. Took new puppy in for full check up and shots. Told vet the dog was scratching a lot and i suspected a possible flea problem. Examination was over much faster than i anticipated, under 15 minutes. Received no paperwork stating the vets findings. Vet only verbally told me the puppy was a little underweight but otherwise healthy looking and told me to come back in a month for another vaccination. The vet also told me she didn't see any fleas on the puppy.... Fast forward a few hours and i'm at home. I see the puppy again scratching a lot. This time i examine the dog myself, i immediately see lots of dandruff within the puppies hair. I call the vet and ask why she didn't tell me the dog has dandruff. The vet says she didn't see it (yet the vet claims she checked for fleas but didn't see the dandruff). Vet now tells me the dandruff is "probably" caused by dry skin. I ask about the possible other million possible causes for dog dandruff, vet says if i like i can bring the puppy back and they'll take another look... My experience at Animal General recently was very disappointing to say the least. They were always good in the past when Dr. Freedman was there but he has since retired and the practice is in the hands of those that shouldn't be. I came in for x-rays because my cat couldn't put any weight on her right leg but this didn't stop the dr from doing her 5 minute painful exam on the broken leg which was totally unnecessary since we were getting x-rays anyway as this was the primary reason for our visit which they were well aware of. We were told we would have to wait for the x-rays to be taken because we were "late" and we would have to be seen between appointments. I came in at 11:10 for my 11:00 appt. 2 hours later they got around to taking the films on my poor cat. Maybe double booking isn't a good idea guys. I was of course charged $620.00 for the 5 minute(painful) exam and 3 x-rays. The anti-inflammatory pills they wanted to sell me, I thought we had at home. When I told them this and requested a written script in case I didn't, I was denied. The dr made up some excuse that made no sense as to why it wasn't a good idea. They simply didn't want to lose the additional $30.00 had I filled the script at a pharmacy that wasn't their own. This clinic used to care more about your pet than the almighty dollar, but no more. Every aspect of the visit was disappointing. Save yourself the headache and your pet the additional discomfort and find a better vet to bring your pets to because this one has gone downhill. I took my puppy here for her first exam since she had come home with us. I called and was able to make a same day appointment with the vet. We were checked right in and I filled out some initial paperwork. We were taken to the doctors room with another employee who weighed her. They really liked my puppy Glory and asked to take pictures of her. I obliged. Anyways then we waited for several minutes for the vet (like waiting at the real doctors office). Finally Dr. Knight came and she was very nice and super great with Glory. She gave me some advice about pet insurance and answered the questions I had for her. Overall it was a good experience and very easy. Nice and clean environment. They sell food and treats I believe but there is also a pet store 2 doors down in the same plaza. Plenty of parking here! My two fur babies (one cat & one dog) have been patients of Animal General since I relocated to New Jersey in 2012. I must say as a health provider myself, I am very pleased with this facility. Initially it may be slight expensive but considering the ease of appointment scheduling, care and consideration of cost by the doctors it is so worth it. The doctors and staff work very closely with specialists in times of need. For example, my Pomeranian (pictured below) was diagnosed with CHF suddenly in November of 2015. I do not want to even begin to explain the time intensive nature of this disease/condition. However, having the combination of Animal General & Oradell Hospital care has been the best combination I could provide my dog. As my mother says, "Dr. Tierney gives a better explanation of findings than a general practitioner to a human." read more

She was super thorough and did not try to upsell me on things she did not need. I went in because my dog was feeling under the weather a few days prior and I thought it was time for an annual checkup (shots and stuff). Ive taken all three of my cats here for over 10 years. This place is very helpful, friendly and outstanding. My female cat is a bit of a bitch and does not like men, and to be handled by strangers all the time. She loves to be pet by any of the staff here and they love her, a few of them know her by her name-Starr DiMuro. The main reason why this place won me over and truly made me feel loved was what happened the day after Hurricane Sandy. My family and I lost our apartment due to it, which resulted in me having to bring Starr to my boyfriends house--where 7 other cats live. A situation in the past hapepned that resulted in us having to sedate her a little to deal with stress, my family and I knew this would work best to calm her down and get her used to being around other animals at first. When we pulled up, the lights were off and i paniced. No one had answered the phone, and i knew this could help her. Not only did a staff member come to the door, but she checked my chart, called up Oradell Animal Hospital in Paramus and spoke to them about calling in the medicine. Everything went smoothly and Starr was fine. Dr. Friedman left me a voicemail to check up on Starr and make sure everything went fine. Even a few laters later, he called again to find out if we needed anything. This place is truly loving and cares about their clients, and little furry friends. Ive used other vets and have had just the 'whatever' attitude from them, and almost a cold feeling. Deff. bring your animals here, they will go out of their way to help them and you. read more

I brought my beloved doggie to Animal General the first 12 years of his life, despite moving to Brooklyn I even then continued to make the journey. I only wish I had stayed with them for the last year as my dog may still be alive today. Most of the vets that I encountered at Animal General were insanely thorough to the point of being overzealous. I was completely happy with this because it meant they were thinking proactively and I didn't have to say "yes" to everything they suggested. Dr. Freedman was particularly helpful in realizing that my dog was probably in serious pain from inflammation in an old injury that wasn't readily obvious. Another member of the team helped me get to the bottom of by babe's allergies when other vets had brushed it off. Last summer I was exposed to toxic mold in my apartment for 3 months straight. As soon as I realized what was going on - I took my beloved doggie to a vet in Brooklyn and asked them what we could about the mold for my dog - checking him and proactive since they thought he wasn't showing signs of illness. (I had explained that his stool had been extremely off all summer.) The Brooklyn vet was adamant that he was fine and did nothing. Four months later he was diagnosed with an extremely aggressive cancer and he passed a few months later. I called Animal General early on to talk with Dr. Freedman to get his opinion about my dog's cancer. Despite being hit hard with the flu Dr. Freedman immediately responded, had me send him all of my files, and got back to me with his opinion. There was no charge and no insistence that I had to come in for a consult. I was so thankful for his compassion and care for my doggie - no difference that we hadn't been in in a year. I can't help but think that if I'd brought my boy to Animal General that they would have been proactive about the mold and testing. I will likely find myself making the drive to Animal General when I next again have a fur baby because I've now worked with 3 different vets in Brooklyn and haven't experienced the proactive vet care that Animal General provided. read more

Over the past year, I have spent $2,500 in surgeries on my dog at Animal General. This week, he had a split nail that is bleeding. I called on Thursday to request an appointment. They told me they were booked but to call back on Saturday at 9am to get an emergency visit. I just called at exactly 9am and was told that he still could not be seen. My 2 year old French Bulldog Blanca and I were heading to Mexico and needed a health certificate to travel. I saw Dr. Freedman who is the BEST veterinarian I have seen over my pup's life span. He explained things that my vet in Los Angeles, (where I lived previously), had never mentioned. Apparently, Blanca has a knee issue in her back leg that causes her to skip while walking. I had never known why she did this. While Dr. Freedman needed simply to fill out the health certificate, he took time and loving care to walk thru Blanca's overall health with me. The facility was clean. The receptionists were attentive. Couldn't speak more highly of this place and primarily because of Dr. Freedman's bed side manner and expertise. read more

I took my six month old Maltese to be spayed at Animal General on June 11 2019. While she was there I received a text from the vet tech who was assisting Dr Ng with the surgery . She wrote that she took an " AUNTS DECISION and cut the puppies facial hair ". The puppy which is a pedigree dog with champion lineage had just been groomed at River Pet where I had paid $90 for the grooming and had given a $30 gratuity which I was willing to do in light of the beautiful grooming she had received. When I picked up my dog after the surgery her faced was unrecognizable from when I brought her in. The hair on on side of her muzzle was cut down to the skin which you could see. IT had been chopped off and one side of her face was totally uneven from the other. When I got home and saw the full extent of the damage I broke down in tears. When you see the before and after photos here you will understand why. I texteD DR NG and asked how and why she allowed a tech her supervision to take matters into her own hands and do something that she has not been trained for or is licensed for and was not asked to do ?? I told her I wanted to be compensated for grooming I received a email back from DR FREEDMAN. the owner of ANIMAL GENERAL wrote back to me and said neither he nor Dr NG would compensate me. That I should go to another vet. That he would not answer any further emails From me and without my records were sent to my house that day Now i had no intentions of returning to AnimalGeneral After this horrific experience and unprofessional medical treatment BUT it seems to me to cast out a patient while she is recuperating from a surgery they performed is obvious negligence on their part. read more

I have been taking my dogs here for over six years. I love all of the vets in this practice. Even though there are several vets in the practice, there is great consistency to the approach and level of caring across the staff. The things I love most about this practice are: 1) The caring attitude of the staff. 2) Followup by the vets to see how my dog (or cat) is doing. 3) Conservative approach to treatment 4) Affiliation with River Pet. When I need to board my dogs, which is rarely, I feel comfortable knowing that the vet is just a few doors down. 5) Availability for to leave my pet as a "drop-off" if my schedule precludes me from being present for an unexpected appointment. For an additonal fee, I can drop my dog off in the morning and one of the vets will see them as time permits. 6) Costs are very reasonable for the area. With the conservative approach to treatment, I spend much less than I did prior to brining my pets to Animal General. While the follow-up is always great, they were particularly great during the last several months of my elderly dog and cat's lives. That was a very difficult time and they were able to answer all of my questions and offer support, sometimes even calling from their commutes home to check on things. I love these guys. I have referred several friends to this practice, including former neighbors in Northern Manhattan. They have all raved about their experience at Animal General and it is significantly less expensive than vet practices in Manhattan. read more

0 stars if i could honestly. Clearly they can't tell breast cancer when they first see it like this other vet who saw it 10 DAYS LATER and knew what it was within a matter of SECONDS. I even googled what breast cancer in dogs looked like and it's exactly what my dog has. However, NOT ONCE was it mentioned by any doctor there. NOT ONCE so obviously it didn't come to our attention. They just said it was tumors that can be removed NEVER mentioning it POSSIBLY being breast cancer though. AND ITS BEEN GROWING RAPIDLY and has now become inoperable. SAVE YOUR MONEY, SAVE YOUR TIME & most importantly SAVE YOUR DOGS LIFE AND GO ELSEWHERE. read more
