I have never left a review before but I was traumatized by my bizarre experience here: I was fostering an abused and abandoned sphynx cat through Little Wanderers (with the confirmed possibility to adopt). I was directed to bring him to Dr. Davila at this office for a simple check up. Within seconds of the start of his appointment, he was separated into to a back room. After waiting for 2 hours with no updates, the vet returned to the waiting room with an empty carrier. I was told that he would be neutered the following morning (which wasn't a part of the original plan, but I was happy to hear). I asked what time to pick him up and was awkwardly told they would be in touch. I was then skeptical of what was going on, but trusted Gotham and Dr. Davila. But after calling the following day to check on him, everyone refused to answer questions for many hours. Eventually I received a brief text from the agency that he was adopted by Dr. Davila. While I am happy the cat was adopted (and would have been thrilled had I been told at the office), the situation was handled poorly. I was not given the courtesy of being told what was in progress until long after the paperwork was finalized, and obviously irrevocable. What could have been a celebratory moment was turned heartbreaking and confusing. Due to the secrecy, I can't help but think the decision was motivated by the wrong reasons, and I hope the cat is in good hands. I understand that foster cats are meant to be adopted. That's great. But this was strange, underhanded, and immoral. Stay clear if your pets are expensive or rare in any way. read more

Stopped taking my dogs after misdiagnosis which caused major problems in my dog. Stay away from Dr Ashley. She is the rudest least caring Vet I have ever encountered. I'm shocked she is still there! Care is very inconsistent and always feels transactional. Always request docs on bloodwork and notes. What is in the notes isn't always communicated and can affect future insurance coverage. I asked her very basic questions about safety of anesthesia for my cat and necessity of x-rays, and her tone was very condescending and she was short of details or explanation. The price for a consult was already $375 so one would think that price includes a comprehensive discussion with the doctor but apparently that's too much to ask. I'd stay away. We have been taking our dog to Gotham for 3+ years with decently good care throughout, but our last visit's lack of quality was so poor that we will now be leaving the practice. After our dog had some dental work, we had a scheduled follow up with the dental specialist at 9am on a Tuesday when the offices opened. After 60 minutes of waiting and checking in with the receptionist twice, we decided to leave. The dental specialist had finished with their first patient and was seen walking around. The receptionist said we were next, but 60 min later, we still hadn't been called back. This is absolutely unacceptable, especially without any communication as to why there was a delay or any apology for the delay. If a patient was 60 min late, we surely would be billed for the missed appointment. We never received a follow up call or an apology. read more

I brought my dog Chester to Gotham Veterinary Center because the office is around the corner from my building. He was a rescue, and they helped me finalize the adoption by neutering him, and then provided decent care for the next three and a half years. My three star rating is because I recently had to put Chester down after he got a leptospirosis infection. Though I did everything emergency vets recommended to give him a fighting chance, it wasn't enough and his body was unable to fight it. I have since learned that there is a vaccine for leptospirosis. I notified my friends with dogs in the city to make sure their dogs were vaccinated, and all of them told me their vets insisted on the vaccine even though it wasn't required by the city because of how prevalent it is due to the out of control rat problem. I don't recall any of the vets we saw at GVC ever mentioning this vaccine. I am heartbroken to know his pain and suffering could have been minimized if not avoided had he been vaccinated. I nor any other pet parent should not have to be an internet expert on veterinary science and know about every optional vaccination in order to take good care of our pets. That's why we bring them to the vet. All patients: make sure you talk to your vet about the leptospirosis vaccine! GVC: make sure all of your vets and technicians are including discussion of leptospirosis and the vaccine in their annual check-ups with patients. This is an easy step to help other avoid the pain and suffering Chester went through. read more

Gotham isn't a bad vet center, but it definitely always gave me the vibes they were there to take your money. The vets are caring, but their services and tests are a lot higher than other neighbourhood vets. I just don't think it's worth coming here when there are better options. I will say that they never helped me figure out what was wrong with my pet, so I took my pet to somewhere else and they did some tests Gotham never even suggested and found our answer. I am so sad to write this review because Dr. Brown was wonderful for my dog, but I took my cat in this week and had such an awful experience with Dr. Ashley I feel I need to warn other cat owners. I had never met her, nor did she see me interact with my cat at all, and upon describing to her that his behavior is difficult and he has major mood swings so be mindful of how he'll react to an exam, she responded to me as if I hated him and was a negligent and uncaring pet owner. She pushed bloodwork when he's entirely healthy and asymptomatic, vaccines that I gave in to since he's traveling (he comes into no contact with anyone as he's indoors), and she looked me straight in the eye after taking him out of the room for the exam (also weird) and told me "he's a good cat. I'm sorry you don't like him, and it's heartbreaking to me that he doesn't have something in his life to make him happy." Literally shamed me and has zero idea how I am as a pet owner. I left in tears and lost sleep over how awful this was. Please, do NOT make an appointment with Dr. Ashley. Absolutely awful and unprofessional treatment. read more

Every time I go I have found the staff responsive and helpful, no matter how busy and all through Covid. Vet had no bedside manner. Super judgmental. Not my regular vet, who didn't have immediate availability. Absolutely do not recommend.

All the vets seem really capable, but the reason that I moved to another practice, is that it's hard to get a consistent vet, and each different vet seems to treat each health issue separately, without looking at the pet holistically. They also mostly take your pet to the back for the exam, you wait in the waiting room, and then they come back out to the small waiting room so you have to talk to vet make choices in front of whoever is waiting (with their pets). The most important Thing is to be able to trust your vet to take care of your animal particularly when surgery is necessary. From doctor Brown's taking blood work to setting up the appointment with one of the surgeons, Dr. Alvaro, the process was very smooth and well run. Everyone did their job from Rachel, Annie the receptionists, Janis the nurse & the vet techs. Jaak had to remain a little longer before I picked him up. Dr. Brown was supervising all. Discharge planning was very clear with the medications I had to give Jaak & when. The biopsy went to pathology & I was to return to remove the stitches 10-12 days. Dr Bryant was great and took good care of my cat who was throwing up everyday. He is now well and his belly is all well.

First off--this is not my personal vet. I have a client who takes her dog here. Dog wasn't feeling well, acting funny, loopy so I brought her in AFTER the owner called and emailed everything that was going on. Despite all this and getting the confirmation to bring the dog in--they had us wait with the dog in my lap unable to stand and continued to dismiss me as I explained she needed IV fluids ASAP as she wasn't eating or drinking, and was definitely lethargic. One staff member was especially rude and incompetent. She continued to brush me off as I asked how much longer we'd have to wait, that it was an emergency and she should be brought in by a nurse. At least three times I was told that the doctor had to come out and take Gracie. Until I decided this was unacceptable service, the same woman behind the desk (young, 20's, long dark hair, tips frosted) sighed and rolled her eyes and went to the back to get a nurse to bring Gracie in. I explained that she needed her meds given right away and the nurse balked like it was too complicated. The woman behind the counter spoke loudly and said "yes, we were emailed and have all her meds on file" and the nurse nodded confusedly and took the dog into the back. Lastly when I asked if I could leave my number as her owner was out of town, the same woman behind the counter slapped a post it onto the counter and as soon as I'd written my info down took the pen I handed her and threw it on the desk! Sad to see this kind of abysmal service. It wasn't even busy! They made me feel like we were inconveniencing them by bringing in a sick dog! If my client weren't so loyal to one of their vets in that office, I would've taken her to my vet --Westside Veterinary Center where she would definitely been taken in immediately rather than leaving us to wait indefinitely until I put up a fight. Based on this experience, I strongly recommend you take your dog or cat elsewhere. Somewhere they actually care about animals! read more

This is an atrocious vet and will fraudulently bill you for extra work you did not know was going to happen or consent to. In 2016, my cat had routine senior bloodwork. Over a year later, I was billed $143 extra for a test I never was quoted for and the results of which I never received. I disputed this, didn't hear back from them for a year, and now, 2 years after the alleged test, I finally received the records which showed my cat's blood work was entirely normal and didn't even require this extra test - AND that test usually costs no more than $92 (I called around - most vets do it standard in a blood panel. It's a thyroid test.) I was told the manager would call me about this issue, since I have zero record of this payment, but instead they sent me to collections. At least I know they won't get the full amount now since collections takes most of the money. Don't go here. Go to Symphony Vet. They are a far, far better vet. I switched to them waaaaay before this all happened because Gotham ALSO ignored the wasting and high blood counts of my OTHER cat, who ended up having cancer and needing treatment. Symphony caught that, not Gotham. Do not go here. read more

Three years ago they missed a serious allergic infection. My dog almost died, blue Pearl saved him. We moved to Europe, they will not prescribe his heart worm meds because they need a heart worm test. I guess I could fly my 100 pound dog over or they could read my Hungarian vet's report in Hungarian. They will not work with you or assist you. Worst vet I have ever had. read more

The vet started to push unnecessary services, so I said yes thinking that it's an extra cost to what I already paid. They ended up charging me again for a visit, shots and some other random things. I never thought I would adopt again, but two years later having recovered mostly from the loss I found that I could open my heart again and Nulis entered my life. I wanted her from the moment I set eyes on her and our first visit to Gotham Veterinary Center proved to be the right choice on every level. Kind, calm front desk staff set the tone, and I would like to emphasise just how important these people are to any organisation. Their attitude either by telephone or in person hold the key for any prospective client, a job requiring a very specific skill set when dealing with the general public. There is nothing worse than finding some usual lump on your furry friend. With complete nerves on end, i was squeezed in on a Friday night and seen by Dr. Rosen and her clinical team at Gotham Vet. I just discovered the private cremation I paid for for my 20 year old cat was done in a communal cremation and she's gone and I can't get her ashes back. I followed up diligently week after week for her ashes and kept getting the answer of someone will call you back. I'm beyond heartbroken. I will now have to take my other 20 year old cat to another vet because I don't trust them that this won't happen again with my other cat when he goes. My dog has issues with his thyroid level and has to have his blood checked frequently. Today I took time off work because I was told no tech appointments are available on weekends - I guess it's techs who take blood. Once there, I asked to have his ears checked because I think they're infected. "Oh no, we can't do that. This is a tech appointment. Only a doctor can check his ears. You'll have to make another appointment. " And take more time off work, and pay another fee. Maybe I should have been told when I made the appointment, "Your pet will not receive any actual care at this appointment, so don't bother asking." Time to find a vet who cares more about its clients than its rigid and expensive policies. read more

I dropped my dog off at 8:30am (as requested) to be seen for a consult with the practice's surgeon. It was requested I give her no food or water in case they needed to sedate her for x-rays. They kept my dog in a cage for 7 hours without food or water and when I went to get her (I told them I had to pick her up by 3:30) she hadn't even been seen or x-rayed. She was sitting in a cage hungry all day and the doctor "was in another consult." I wouldn't trust this place with my stuffed animal. And its a shame, as my first impression of Dr. Brown was how caring she was towards my dog, however, this just isn't how you treat an animal or an animal owner. Period. read more

I was looking for a reputable vet practice on the UWS for our 2 year-old rescue Maltese from the Humane Society. A new friend highly recommended Dr. Brown and I am happy to report our first visit went smoothly! With a small caveat. I made an 8:30 a.m. appointment because I didn't want to stress Janis out coming later and having to deal with an office full of animals. I was there early, ( it was Dr. Brown's first appointment) but wasn't seen on time. Not a great first impression and I wasn't told about a delay. It was a little stressful, but Janis was only shaking a little. Once seen, all was forgiven. Wonderful experience! Janis was a hit with the doctor and tech, because she's a people lover! Dr. Brown was courteous, amicable and professional and obviously loves her clients! Janis was given a shot, had her eyes checked for schmutz and a mani-pedi! I used this vet for my dog for about 3 years. I didn't really have any issue untill now, but my dog never had a problem either. Last summer I needed to travel, therefore I put my dog in a boarding facility. I needed the bordetella vaccine for that and I brought him to the Gotham. They gave him one year vaccine shot that made him imp for two days. Few days ago, I was traveling again and the facility called me to alert me that the bordetella expired. I called the vet asking about the bordetella for boarding my dog, specifying that the facility told me they had records stating that it expired. They assured me that the bordetella didn't expire, and sent me the certificate stating my dog was covered. ITwo days after, I went to drop off my dog, but the facility didn't take him because, as I discovered on the spot, NY Law requires a 6 moths vaccine and NOT the 1 year coverage. I am not a vet, so at the moment it didn't make a lot of sense... My vet assured me he was covered, and not only for 6 months, but one entire year! The facility showed me the law, and after that I made some research online. The six month vaccine is a spray, it's less aggressive and more effective beause it is given every 6 moths! Therefore I complaint with the vet, and they replied that the two vaccines were equivalent, stating that it was the facility's decition to not take the dog while other facilities would do it. When I insited, showing the NY LAW (2014) that FORBID ANY facility to board the dog without that specific vaccine, they just replied that they are not responsible for the information they give. This costed me an entire weekend trip that I planed to attend one of my best friends' wedding. Moreover, I paid to give a vaccine to my dog that hurted him for not specific reason, and I obviously paied more for that. I would discourage anybody to use this vet. read more

I have been dealing with a bird mite infestation that has made myself and my dog the hosts. After multiple attempts at eradicating them via different medications from my previous vet, I decided on getting a second opinion from Dr. Brown here, but ended up spending nearly $800 over three visits in one month, and ultimately was told there was nothing else she could do for my dog. My education around bird mites over the past 9 months has led me to many experiences of vets and PCP's being unable to provide any kind of remedy for long term bird mite infestations, however to simply be turned away rather than explore options I brought to the clinic from others' experiences felt dismissive. read more

I cannot recommend Gotham highly enough (and my sister is a surgeon/professor in the large animal program at Cornell). My dog came to me severely physically abused, untrusting, and terrified. Over the past six years they have lovingly and patiently built a relationship with him and always disregard his spontaneous bodily eruptions (he still pees on his favorite tech). They have never once pushed unnecessary tests or procedures, and have even dissuaded me from getting multiple unnecessary echos. They will also give you an itemized list of pricing *before* they proceed, so I'm not sure where the few bad reviews are coming from. Every doctor on the staff is so wonderful I never even bother setting up an appointment with anyone specific - my once near feral dog now loves them all. read more

I have been going to Gotham Vet for over 10 years with my dogs. I go for everything from vaccinations and annual check ups to dental work. I first fell in love with Gotham because I met Bonnie Brown, founder and vet, and really liked her. She's not always available, but I'm comfortable seeing any of the vets there as I've had appointments with many of them as well. This past week I went in with an ill dog and while at Gotham my dog's health rapidly deteriorated to the point where I had to put my dog to sleep. The vet I was with, Joanna Rosen, was outstanding. She helped me understand why my dog's health failed and was compassionate and caring when I had to put my dog to sleep. Although I love Gotham and everyone there, I do find them to be on the more expensive side of things. Also, because they are very thorough, they always want to order every diagnostic test available and I have found myself throughout the years declining certain services that I either could not afford or did not personally think were needed. For example, I declined an expensive echocardiogram they wanted to do before my dog's dental work because she had a mild heart murmur. Speaking of dental work, it is very expensive. My dogs are a breed that are known for bad teeth and I've had multiple cleanings for both of my dogs over the years. For two dogs, the bill has never been less than $2,000 and has gone as high as nearly $3,500. The work was definitely needed, but it's super expensive and the dental tech is not afraid to be condescending and abrasive if he thinks that you aren't doing what he thinks needs to be done like daily brushing. Finally, Gotham is not an emergency facility. They send you to Blue Pearl for emergencies and Blue Pearl is VERY expensive. I had one dog with an intestinal blockage and that was $7,500. Bottom line is that I love the vets and I love the care and attention for my pets and that's why I'm willing to pay their prices. I recommend them to my friends and would recommend them to anyone, but I also explain that they are pricey. read more

In my experience, vets are vets (unless they're bad vets, overpriced vets, or your pet has serious or chronic problems). Gotham Vets is full of vets and they have taken great care of my pup since I left Uptown Vets. But what was really nice was that, a few days before Christmas, the place that was going to be boarding my pup called to tell me that they required a 6-month bordetella. He was still in a one-year shot, which was good enough for daycare and playtime, but apparently not for overnight. And even though I'd made the reservation weeks before, they thought that it would be best to wait until the very last minute to tell me. Then they said that he had to have it at least 48 hours before his stay started. Which left me a window of about 2 days to get the shot. Called Gotham, explained the situation, and they told me to come on in. Went in, got it done, and Christmas wasn't ruined. I just love it when potential crises are diffused by responsive and compassionate service. read more
