But that didn't stop him from spending 15 minutes on the phone with me asking questions and sharing his expertise. He even asked me to send him the cat's recent medical records, which he reviewed and then called me back with further detailed information. All this for a cat he was unable to personally treat... Dr. Lowenstein embodies deep and abiding care for our pets with no sign of the profit-first and up-selling that I've encountered at other vets. I contacted him about a stray calico cat I took in and she started having some issues with her paw due to a missing left dew claw (favoring it and licking it) and he listened diligently to my concerns, (oh and did I mention he responded immediately to my call even while he was feeling a bit under the weather)? Nearly 3 years ago, the clinic across the street told my partner and I that we needed to consider euthanizing our 16-year-old cat Evie because of her severe, intractable constipation. She had hit a crisis point and was barely eating. Somehow, in my panic, I stumbled across online reviews for Dr. Lowenstein. Thank goodness I did, because Evie is still living a happy, high-quality life 3 years later. Dr. Lowenstein is incredibly knowledgeable and skilled, but more than anything, he will give as much time as it needs to figure out your pet's problem. He spent a lot of time on the phone with us at the beginning, troubleshooting and adjusting Evie's medications. He also explained everything carefully. The clinic across the street had given us the impression that there was little room for adjustment on the meds. On the contrary-- there was tons of room, and Dr. Lowenstein explained in specific detail what dosage was possible for a cat her size. Ultimately, she just needed time, follow-up, and patience to sort out the issues that had seemed completely unmanageable. It felt almost miraculous, but it was just the kind of good old fashioned medicine that you don't get at vet clinics now. After a couple of years, Evie had another issue come up. This time, she needed a visit to a specialist. We were worried-- one of the reasons why we were happy to have Evie seen at home was because she was utterly terrified by vet visits-- but Dr. Lowenstein was able to send us a prescription that would help keep her calm for the visit. He also knew the best person for her to see, and he got us an appointment much more quickly than we would have been able to on our own. It was an incredibly helpful visit, and with the knowledge we gained there, we have been able to work with Dr. Lowenstein to manage this condition as well. I can't believe how much extra time we've gotten with our beloved girl because of him. She is still full of life and sass and snuggles at 19. When our 14-year-old kitty Jerry was diagnosed with cancer in October, we made the difficult decision to let him live out his life at home, rather than pursue more treatment. We asked Dr. Lowenstein to take over his care, because we knew he would be invested in making sure Jerry was comfortable and happy. Jerry was EXTREMELY aggressive when put in a carrier and at the vet's, so it was a relief to have him seen at home. We came to the end with Jerry this week. Dr. Lowenstein was incredibly helpful in talking through when it might be time. He didn't make the decision for us, but he gave us all the information and things to consider for us to make the decision that we felt was right. He was especially patient and generous during these hard discussions, and helped us find clarity in what is a confusing and overwhelming situation. We were also worried that Jerry, even in a weaker state, might still be aggressive at the end and not go peacefully. Dr. Lowenstein talked through this with us and prescribed medication to calm him beforehand. When he came to help Jerry pass, he took his time to make sure that everything would go smoothly and peacefully, which it did. Afterward, I had some clay ready to make paw print impressions, but after struggling for a bit unsuccessfully, I was about to give up. Dr. Lowenstein offered to help, and even though this isn't something he usually does, he turned out to be great at that, too. He treated Jerry with dignity and care, and I feel so at peace with his end. I really can't recommend Dr. Lowenstein highly enough. He is seasoned and skilled and kind and all kinds of wonderful things, but most of all, he will truly care about your pet, and he'll follow through on that to do whatever is needed to be sure that it gets the best care. read more

This review is 5 years late. I called Dr. Lowenstein in late 2017 for help with my beloved 18-year-cat. Boo was diagnosed with IBD/suspected lymphoma, and her condition was worsening. She hated going to the vet (or anywhere,) and, considering the cold weather, I decided no more outside trips. Dr. Lowenstein came over within 24 hours. In the following 5 months, he went above and beyond to help her, and I believe his care extended her life. Even if that was only by months, it truly meant the world to me. And at the end, he was extraordinarily compassionate and kind. In 20+ years of pet ownership, and visiting maybe a dozen vets throughout NYC, no one comes close to the level of care he provided. I really can't recommend him highly enough. I've given his name to anyone who needs a house call vet. Now that my dog is getting a little more difficult to care for, I may be calling him again soon. read more

Dr. Bruce has been my vet for more than 20 years. That speaks for itself. He is extremely kind, compassionate, and sensitive to my cats as well as my own anxiety around having them examined. It can be stressful for me as well knowing that my cats might be scared. Having Bruce come to my house (as opposed to having to round up the cats and take them into an office) is valuable to me. It cuts the stress in half for both myself and my cats. When Bruce comes to my apartment, he is so patient, gentle, and welcoming to the cats, that they come to him for their exam. He also takes so much time to explain everything he is doing and why in a way that someone who is not a doctor completely can understand. And if you have her pills that they need to be brought into an office setting , he does not hesitate to recommend that. He has always answered my calls. If he does not pick up the phone right away, he responds very quickly (usually within minutes) no matter what time of day or night it is. he really is an angel and works tirelessly in his mission and obvious calling to provide the most thorough and loving care to all pets. Dr. Lowenstein is a patron saint of the animal world. When our cat became ill I discovered him online and immediately made an appointment. He is the MOST responsive, kind and knowledgable vet I have ever known. He came to our apartment several times. He was extremely kind to our 18 year old cat Stuart who became violently ill when he even saw a carrier. He made his last weeks so gentle and bearable. Dr. Lowenstein is amazingly responsive, answering my calls, texts and emails within minutes or hours. His kindness and attentiveness extended to the most excruciatingly difficult moments at the end of our cat's life which happened at home, in a place on our couch that Stuart loved. He was with me all the way, with great advice and support when my cat friend was diagnosed with cancer. He was able to access his medical record from the AMC almost immediately and provide hospice care (including getting meds delivered quickly) until the decision had to be made to euthanize him. Dr. Bruce is providing care to the animal with the utmost kindness, patience, and a loving heart. He is generous with his time, and professional expertise. There is no other veterinarian we will go to other than Dr. Bruce Lowenstein. He's been our primary vet since 2006 to our then dog, Cookie, and our two cats, Orange and Grey, when they were alive. He is still our current vet to our three cats (Cal, Misty & Tux) and dog Baci. When Cookie suffered from her debilitating knees and now that Cal is suffering from weight loss with intestinal issues, Bruce is completely thorough from examining to diagnosing them. Cal is doing much better now due to Bruce's prescribed medicines and care. There is an amazing level of comfort to how knowledgable he is with the latest technologies in medicine and care. I called Dr Lowenstein because I have a new 8 weeks puppy who is going to grow into an enormous airedale, we are located in the city, and I want to cover all of my bases as far as pet care, in the even that reduced mobility becomes a concern. Dr Lowenstein was incredibly informative regarding subjects ranging from various ambulette and 24/7 emergency vet clinics in my area, pet insurance, vaccinations, training, and much more. It is glaringly obvious that he is passionate about what he does, looking out for what is best for the dog within the limitations of the owner's wallet. He was a wealth of info, and yet I had to get off the phone to walk the puppy... but I am supremely grateful for Dr Lowenstein's time and expertise. Dr Lowenstein has been my vet since 2009. Prior to finding him I bounced around from vet to vet, questioning the decisions and prices I paid. Most vets pass you along to the techs and don't answer many questions. Dr. Lowenstein explains the diagnosis and the pros and cons of the treatments and the costs. I'm always grateful for his patience, guidance and attention. He is truly a kind soul and cares about my pets. His prices are incredibly reasonable considering the service he offers. For many New Yorkers are pets are our families, and its a jungle of greedy vets out there! As an example, my cat named Fuzz Buzz always had an issue that no vet could figure out. I met Dr. Lowenstein when Fuzz Buzz was about 8 years old. Fuzz had a funny walk, as if his hide legs were riding a bicycle. He got around ok but always lifted his hind legs extra high. Three vets in upper manhattan could never diagnosed his condition. Finally I decided it was a good idea to give a house call vet a try. Carrying FuzzBuzz and my other cat Bird, was a handful for any taxi trip and then I found Dr. Lowenstein. Luckily Dr. Lowenstein's first visit was more economical and more comfortable than the nerve racking visits to the veterinarian clinic. After 8 years of wondering what was wrong with Fuzz Buzz, Dr Lowenstein diagnosed him with cerebellar dysplasia, a neurological disorder that can't be cured. It was a relief to finally understand his condition and to know I had done my best to help him. Today, my other cat, Bird is 22 years old!! thanks to Dr. Lowenstein!! Who monitors Bird's heath closely. Bird has many common problems geriatric cats have. He now weighs 8 lbs, has high thyroid levels, kidney disease, and inflammatory bowel. He takes 2 medicines, food enzymes and extra fiber in his diet. Dr Lowenstein texts and calls me to see how Bird is doing often. Having an older cat with so many issues can be scary. 5 stars doesn't begin to address my gratitude to and respect for Dr. Lowenstein and his care/caring for my 15 plus-year-old dying, or so I thought until Dr. Lowenstein showed up, cat, Lily. Her last visit to the vet, three months ago, was so traumatic that I made a promise never to bring her in again and subject her to that. It would take her a week to recover from a visit. I was going to let her live out her life in as peaceful a fashion as possible. With several health problems as well as her age, I thought she was winding down as she became increasingly lethargic, losing weight, unable to clean herself properly. My neighbors, cat owners, looked at her during those weeks, and we all agreed. When I didn't think she was enjoying anything, I called Dr. Lowenstein, imagining that he would be putting Lily down. He spent an inordinate amount of time reviewing her records and asking me questions as he tried to pinpoint what happened when. As I recounted the story for him several times because he kept asking, he noticed something-- something that didn't make sense to him--a dosage increase that she'd had in the past that he didn't understand. He talked about all the kinds of current innovations that are out there, and, for a different kind of owner with a different kind of cat, it's good to know he has that information. With total respect for my not wanting my cat to be subjected to invasive measures, he came up with a plan to see if Lily could heal herself with my active help. As you imagine, a self-healing cat would not be a way for Dr. Lowenstein to make a lot of money. He should be well paid for every single thing he does, of course, but he created a rather homeopathic plan for her recovery that worked-- by God, it worked--relying on his understanding of the body and how it can compensate for what is wrong, under the right conditions. He told me how to create those conditions, and we waited. Because of his experience, his skill, his willingness to take the time, and his genuine interest in the health of my pet, Lily is sitting next to me now. She is gaining weight, playing with her laser light and annoying me with her never ending feline demands-- which is just the way I like it. Dr. Lowenstein is a blessing, the kind of veterinarian who is harder to find these days. He is a total pro, a knowledgeable clinician and an all-around good guy. Lily agrees. read more

So much better for my cats! Less stress for them, and Dr Lowenstein treated them with such care. We recently moved and downsized. One of my cats has been so stressed she has licked off much of her hair. There is no way she would have tolerated a visit to an office. Dr. Lowenstein was able to do the labs for both my cats, discussed treatment options for my cat, and followed up. All at lower cost somehow than an office visit. Amazing Doctor!! Dr Lowenstein is the best Veterinary Doctor I ever had the pleasure to deal with. My now 9 1/2 year old Maltese was always seen by Dr Lowenstein since she was 3 months old he is so knowledgeable and always takes the time to answer all my questions. Thru the years when she got sick, went thru surgery or just needed a routine checkup I would call him and I always was left with a peace of mind. He is amazing at following up and speaking to you via the phone and go far and beyond to explain in detail. I have full trust and never felt I need a second opinion once he gives me a prognosis, you can just see how much he enjoys his work, how caring and compassionate he is with the fur babies and that absolutely has no price. He is very fairly priced as well. I moved to NJ from NYC where I needed a house call and at the time he wasn't available, he put me in contact quickly with another house call Veterinary Doctor who he recommended and I am beyond happy for is super fast response and always eager to help attitude. Had the need for an in home visit from a vet for our cat, Kitty. Kitty refused to get in her carrier when we decided she needed to go to the veterinarian. We assumed she had a particular malady, subsequently confirmed, and wanted her checked and diagnosed. My wife found Dr. Lowestein (Bruce) on the web and we decided to call him. Within a few hours he arrived. Based on his suggestions we were able so isolate Kitty and he performed his examination. Kitty was subsequently placed on medication and is now back to her obstinate self. Great job by Dr. Lowenstein. He is also very personable, though a bit talkative. Dr. Bruce Lowenstein's passion for helping animals and their owners is demonstrated through his dedication to his work. This is a man who loves his job. Dr. Lowenstein has been my pets' veterinarian for three years and has seen us through some pretty traumatic, tragic, and peculiar circumstances all with a great deal of compassion and expertise. When my eighteen year old chihuahua/pug, Garbanzo Bean, consumed a half pound of pure chocolate Dr. Lowenstein was the first call I made. He directed me to animal poison control and later to the emergency clinic. I called him after speaking with poison control, twice from the emergency room, and just about every day thereafter during G. Bean's recovery. He also kept in contact with the emergency clinic during his three days in the ICU to monitor his progress and keep tab on the doctors. For all this support, time and expertise he was compensated not at all. Dr. Lowenstein spent literally hours on the phone with me just because of his regard and concern for my pet. When later I found myself without a pet Dr. Lowenstein freely offered to accompany me to the government run animal shelter to pick out a cat. This shelter is a pretty grim and depressing place and he wanted to ensure that I didn't take home a sick animal. He was able to ask the shelter employees pertinent questions and give the cat a brief physical before I adopted him and took him home. The time I made an excursion to the shelter without the company of Dr. Lowenstein I ended up adopting an aged, toothless, underweight Chihuahua with huge tumor like growths (yes, I'm a sucker). After admonishing me for not taking him with me to the shelter he promptly arrived to give the poor dog an examination and later made dozens of calls to clinics and surgeons around the city looking for just the care the dog needed. He was able to pull some strings with a clinic he interned for during his schooling and today, Pepino the chihuahua, is a healthy and thriving (although still toothless). Other than Dr. Lowenstein being a great veterinarian and an outstanding human being why bother packing up a terrified and sick animal and crating it across the city when a qualified and compassionate professional can come directly to your door? read more

Dr. Lowenstein recently made an end-of-life housecall for my 15-year-old cat Joey who was struggling with cancer. When I explained Joey's symptoms over the phone, Dr. L was concerned for his suffering and juggled his schedule to come that day. Joey passed peacefully and painlessly without being moved around or handled unnecessarily. Dr. L explained everything he was doing and showed the utmost compassion for Joey. Dr. L was patient and generous with his time before the appointment, during, and after. He communicated with the crematory on my behalf to be sure that my wishes were understood. Not only does he understand your pet, Dr. Lowenstein understands you. My cat never was happy about vet trips and over the years I grew less impressed with who had been a very good vet at one time. I felt I was not being heard and as a result, lack of addressing my concerns ended up adversely affecting my cat's health. Now with Dr. Lowenstein, I can have a real conversation about my cat and he does not treat anything slightly. Since seeing Dr. Lowenstein in early summer, I feel my 14-1/2 year old kitty is back on a better path without receiving a blanket diagnosis because one size truly does not fit all pets, and getting the right tests done to rule things out is helpful. The dr is available by text and phone and is always ready to help. He is really dedicated to animals and it shows. After having a few visits to my other vet this year, the cost is probably not all that much more (by Manhattan standards) and having a pet seen in the comfort of his/her home sans cabs or transportation can't be beat. Olivia was very ill and after navigating the circuit of high end veterinary practices in Manhattan not only did she not appear to be getting better but her condition was worsening. I fortunately found Dr. Lowenstein through a very intelligent pet owner/neighbor and called him immediately. He was patient and personable on the phone as I explained Olivia's fragile condition. I began the process of switching her records over to him as soon as possible. At first I couldn't believe that a veterinarian would make a house call in this day and age but that is just one aspect that makes Dr. Bruce's practice so wonderful. The process of placing a NYC house cat who is not well into a carrier and out onto the noisy streets of the city is traumatic for both cat and owner. Thanks to Dr. Bruce neither Olivia nor I will ever have to go through that process again! Congenial Dr. Bruce showed up as soon as possible to help my Livvy. He has a way of speaking to Olivia that puts her at ease. Before she was terrified of strangers but now even after he examines her, draws blood, weighs her and/or does the other necessary medical things that cats and humans dislike having done, Livvy walks right up to him as if he were an old friend rather than a doctor. Immediately, Dr. Bruce was able to make a complete and accurate diagnosis, removing the unnecessary medicines Olivia was on and providing her with exactly what she needed. She is happy, calm and doing much healthier thanks to Dr. Bruce. Dr. Bruce is a true gem, a doctor who obviously treats the pet for the pet's sake, not to line his pockets with cash. His pricing is very reasonable, an unexpected yet welcome plus. In fact I am sure that the cost of treating my cat is less due to his pricing and the savings from eliminating cab fare to and from the vet I had previously been using. Dr. Bruce is available 24/7, something I wish all doctors would do! And he spends time with me and my pet, more time than any 'traditional office vet' ever has. He is methodical in examining Livvy all while talking her sweetly through the process (as if she understands, and maybe she does?), and then explaining to me, in detail what is going on, how she's doing, what needs to be done and when I will receive test results. He promptly returns calls, answers questions and is absolutely trustworthy; everything I could ask for in the physician responsible for my beloved pet's health. I seriously doubt Olivia would be alive today if not for Dr. Bruce and his amazing ability to diagnose and treat her rather complicated condition with accuracy and compassion. I'm SO grateful I picked up Dr Lowenstein's card from Furry Paws long ago! Our sweet 16yo doxie mix Rosie had lymphoma, and the aggressive treatments City Vet wanted us to continue, were no longer appropriate, & their staff was incredibly judgemental, callous & rude. I decided to never take her there again, & called Dr Lowenstein, asking for home & palliative care... That was the best call I ever made! From that point forward Dr L stayed on top of her case, making sure she had the necessary meds to keep her comfortable and stable. She turned around & felt great for awhile! Our final gift! Ultimately the cancer was taking her from us. Dr L was SO patient, having several long conversations with my husband & I about our choices. We never felt judged.
