With that said, we've been to this location multiple times over the last 10 years primarily for shots and check ups. Tbh I never really thought much of previous experiences as we never got much done other than what we deemed were necessary for preventative health (and at set prices). Consequently, I never had negative nor positive experiences here in the past. It was purely transactional appointments lol. Now this most recent visit was quite the trip lol. My parents called me saying our dog had been having multiple episodes of small, bloody emesis--some frank blood mixed with primarily saliva, very small in size and otherwise no other changes to her behaviors. So she was still super active, eating/drinking fine, etc etc. however, just due to the fact that she had multiple episodes of emesis in a 24hr span, they wanted me to take her to the clinic in order to see if further work up was necessary. Ok to be transparent, I'm a nurse so while I may have a rudimentary understanding of animal healthcare, I am well versed in what this type of thing should look like lol. To be fair, the receptionist who answered my call was friendly enough and was able to slot me in for an appointment within the hour. So that was cool. But holy shiz lol, I swear the vet I interacted just didnt give a sh*t, was having a bad day, or idk. Maybe they're just super incompetent. I explained the context of everything + showed pics of her emesis. They didn't even do a physical exam or anything. They literally just handed me a paper with a list of (very expensive) things they wanted to do. They wanted to give my dog Zofran, a fluid bolus, run imaging, and get multiple sets of labs, as well. I forget if there was more to it, but the estimate they gave for all that was already running me close to $1k. And again, no physical exam was done. It was almost like they didn't even comprehend the context of why we were there. Like why are we wanting to give Zofran + a bolus if my dog is otherwise eating/drinking perfectly fine + showing no signs of lethargy? She just had 2 random episodes of very small emesis over a day. Imaging I understood what they were getting at but also like ok?? It just seemed like this was just a money grab appointment for them. The vet left pretty quickly and the tech or assistant or whoever came in, and I voiced my thoughts above. And I stg yall, she just nodded her head and legit agreed with everything I said lmao. I was so confused. Anyways, I agreed to grab a cbc just to make sure she wasn't having internal bleeding or anything, which was also hella pricey at like $2-300. And yall, get this.. even tho she was already in a muzzle + I had a good hold on her, they wanted me to pay hundreds more for an anesthetic lmaooo. I said no and wouldn't ya know, the tech or phlebotomist who came in got her blood in seconds with no issues. Ok this was a long review but yeah. Long story short. Maybe this was a one off experience or maybe experiences vary at this clinic depending on which vet/staff you interact with... but it's concerning when there's that much of a disconnect between both staff/staff + staff/patients + staff/animal. This legit just felt like a money grab, and it's sad bc I'm sure a lot of people who don't have as much of a background in healthcare would've agreed to xyz.

We weren't positive we were ready after losing our senior chi abruptly to a blood disease, but Pate paired us with the perfect pup for us and ensured we got off to a great start together as a family. The rescue industry is hard. There is so much variation in terms of quality of experience for both the animals and adopters/fosters, and they are often trying to do so much with so little. Motley Zoo does it right. We've since tried to work with a couple other rescues and it just doesn't compare. Some are ok and others down right scary if you get a peek behind the curtain (I'm looking at you DGS). But the medical care and attention the animals receive, the communication with us, and the long term commitment at MZ just shines above the rest. They are the only rescue we've worked with that truly cares about investing in training for the long term well being of the animals. They transport them here super humanely and are such a great organization. They are 100% legit so I am unsure about all the negative comments, I am a real life person from Oregon who adopted a dog from them. Our coordinator who was based in Washington also connected one of our dogs siblings to use because at the time we didn't have social media and it's been so great to develop a friendship with them and for John and Elliot to be able to reconnect. The adoption prices has definitely gone up since March 2024 but not surprised as so has everything in this country. John is so well behaved and came that way and I attribute that to the amazing fosters these dogs have! Thank you TLP and if you're looking for a cat or dog, I highly recommend saving one from the overpopulation Texas area where this rescue saves dogs!

What stood out most was how thoughtful and thorough they are. They do not just let any dog go to anyone. They ask questions, learn about your lifestyle, family, and living situation, and help make sure it is the right fit for both the dog and the adopter. They truly want every dog to find a forever home. I originally came in to meet a specific dog, but Sarah and Eliz helped me think through whether that dog was really the best fit for me, my family, and the dog. Their honesty and care meant so much. Sarah, one of the volunteers, spent over three hours helping people, answering questions, supporting the animals, and making thoughtful matches. Once again they were there to help even at the worst possible time. Without pressure to prolong our kitty's life, the team there provided support and allowed me to make the difficult decision to help his suffering end.
