Yikes! Would not recommend this restaurant to anyone! The $14 egg curry was incredibly watery and included just 2 eggs. The $16 karaikudi chicken had just two measly pieces of chicken in it. The naan was tough and far too chewy. The parotta was thick and oily. You could barely even call it a parotta... Everything in our order was incredibly salty. A very disappointing meal. This place used to be my favorites in 2010 time. It was so authentic. Between 2014-2017 , quality came down :( I went there in February and Bang- they are back . Fantastic food now .. loved everything except the wait times ... Parotta with kurma was just excellent!! Chicken fry biryani was outstanding ... loved the soup . After I came to know this place serves DEER MEAT food which is something not served in the Indian restaurants, I stopped going in or ordering the food from them. One will not know the difference between Goat meat and Deer meat as I have heard. It was a good place for food since in started in 2009, but not anymore for me. read more

We decided to try this restaurant as we are from the area and had never been here before. This was our first time eating here- we ordered king fish curry with 2 chapatis and onion chili dosa. The fish curry was the worst fish curry that I ever had- not sure if they don't know how to make it...also fish was falling apart- did not look fresh. When we questioned the hostess, she refused to admit that it was not fresh or to take it back. The Chapati was crunchy- which I asked for them to replace. The dosa and sambhar was standard/good. I believe the rule of thumb to follow in this place- stick with only foods that you know are authentic South Indian such as idli, dosa etc - and to not venture into trying non vegetarian foods. read more

I have been a customer of this year by year deteriorating restaurant for years.I have seen its quality take a nose dive from its peak. Recently during a visit with family (I stay quite close to Anjappar (North Brunswick)) things reached a boiling point and i lost all patience as the guys running this restaurant straight out to save money took things to a whole different level. We were 6 of us and arrived at 8:45pm and the moment we entered the first thing that greeted us was the stuffiness and stink.Everyone was sweating but since my uncle wanted to try some spicy food i brought him here. We immediately noticed that most of the buffet was not refilled and we thought like any good hotel more food was on the way or so we thot.What followed was the worst dining experience of our lives.Even after polietly asking the staff to get more food they blatantly said they can only do so much and in a restaurant that was in full capacity mentioned they don't want to waste food.I politely told them they were charging us $16 per plate for a buffet and we barely had the opportunity to taste 5-6 items.The staff guy got angry and said its not his problem so i asked him in order to increase their profits they were ready to put the customers experience on the line and swindle him by saying food will go wasted.The older lady at the desk instead of apologizing mentioned its a loss for them.I told them that they shudnt be talking this way or putting customers in such situations where to earn a few dollars in profit they take customers for granted. I think as indians too we tend to go along and thats why restaurants such as these take us for granted with their cheap mentality.It is important these guys learn their lessons and shud take a leaf out of their other franchisee Anjappar -Princeton (i truly value good service) in hospitality, service and hygiene. By the way it was so hot and stuffy inside we were in and out of the restaurant in 30 mins and our damage $110. Hopefully as business decreases these guys will learn their lesson. read more

I would have given zero stars if it's possible! I had a very good impression on this restaurant from Chennai but they just spoiled our Memorial weekend lunch with friends! Firstly they don't respond on the phone and are very arrogant if you get lucky to speak to them. Not sure, why? Secondly they say they're giving combo with 64 oz of Biryani but they cheat by giving just half the quantity as we measured on a kitchen scale Biggest Blunder of all is they give chicken kottu paratha instead of veg kottu paratha! An authentic chettinad experience right here in the northeast. We were a party of two from NY and MA and we stopped here specifically for this subset of Indian cuisine and it was a great food experience. Don't expect too much on the service end. I have been going to this place from the day it opened in North Brunswick in NJ. I have visited all the branches as well - In Green St., In Princeton, In Lexington Ave and in North Brunswick. I just had take-out today and the quality of the food has remained consistent. The cuisines that I order have been always cooked to perfection from day one until today. I have personally received good attention and hospitality from who ever servers me (Dine-In or Take-out) on every single occasion. And btw, I have lost count how many times I have been there. Items on the menu are not worthy of its price tag. Whoever is making the dosa batter needs to be fired immediately as they do not know how to balance the rice-urad ratio. If you want good Indian food, especially south Indian, this is the place for you! Whether its with friends or family, it has an accommodating atmosphere and very well decorated with ample space. I came here multiple times and was never disappointed. The first time we got pepper chicken, chicken lollipops and chicken biryani all of which were great, my favorite were the lollipops - very crispy and spicy but not too much. The second time I got the chicken thaali. Every time the portions were great and quite filling. We had to take some back both times. I also had their masala chai and lassi which were quite good too. I recently had a horrendous experience with a take out order. I ordered egg biryani and what I got was that, with pieces of chicken in it. I am a vegetarian who occasionally likes to eat eggs and when I ordered the dish I wasn't expecting to see meat. My guess, they recycled chicken biryani, added a couple of eggs to it and were selling it as a separate dish. How convenient!! The worst part? the manager Mr. Kannan had the gall to tell me I should be looking at the menu better while ordering and that, egg biryani was listed as a non-vegetarian item and is made with CHICKEN BROTH!!! What??? He also went ahead and gave me a piece of advice that vegetarians shouldn't eat egg to start with. WHAT again?? their menu lists egg biryani in the biryani section right under the vegetable biryani which can easily mislead people and it absolutely does not have chicken broth in the ingredients list. Such lies its unbelievable!!! The management and the cleanliness of the Princeton and North Brunswick locations is terrible and they do not know how to treat their customers. This is not my first experience but I finally found some time to write a review. The restaurant in Princeton markets itself as upscale but they are far from it. I would never go back. read more

I had heard about the food here being really good. The service sucks big time. The waiters have no idea what is going on, and are completely uncommunicative. Half the stuff on the menu was not available.From whatever was available, food was served 45 minutes to 1 hour after the order was given. The waiters did not have the courtesy to serve water during the wait. They showed loads of attitude, as though they were doing us a favor by serving us. The food was good, but for the price we paid and for the excruciatingly long wait, Ive had much better food elsewhere. At the end of it all, while paying the bill, one of us commented that the service is poor, and the response was haughty...such that complaints of this nature were very usual to the staff, and they dont seem interested in making amends. They have a 'Take it or leave it' attitude, which, according to me is not very inviting. I am not going to go there again, so they have lost at least one customer for good. I recommend this place, only if all other options are exhausted, and you have a lot of time on your hands, and definitely if there are no kids in your group. read more

Anjappar is a non-vegetarian chain restaurant from South India. Their food is quite different from the North Indian food which is served in most Indian restaurants. When I go to Anjappar, I always order Chicken 65, Chicken Lollypop, Mutton Bone Soup, and South Indian/Madras Coffee. I also like their biryanis, fish fry, and mutton sukka masala (take it to go, tastes better the next day). Their weekdays lunch buffet is an excellent value for those who want to get a little taste of their menu. It can be very crowded during the weekends, but they recently expanded the restaurant to accomodate more diners. Good service, friendly host. BYOB. The only downside for me is the desserts (and also the fact that it's 40 miles away from where I live) but it does not take any star away from this place. Be sure to check out the specials listed on the board by the cashier for some interesting items that are not on the menu like appam, paniyarram etc. If you are new to South Indian food, you might also want to try the staples e.g. Dosas, Idlis. I don't order these here because I live in JC and we have Sri Ganesh Dosa House :P Please note that they have a couple of hours between lunch and dinner when they closed down the restaurant. I think it's between 3:30 and 5:30 but you might want to confirm. read more

This review is really one that if I could have, I would have given three and a half stars. The good here is really good. Having eaten authentic chettinad cuisine in India itself, I was very pleased. I ordered the vegetable kothu paratha which was spicy enough to make me drink quite a few glasses of water. My uncle got the egg kothu Maratha which was very mild spice wise but still delicious and filling, and my cousin got the chicken lollipops which he completely demolished before any of us could turn around. Two appetizers you absolutely must try are the paneer and the fried (I think?) cauliflower. Absolutely delicious. I could have snacked on then the entire meal and still been satisfied by the end of the night. My only complaint was the service. It was slow at times and often I had to get up to find the waiter/waitress to take out order. They also left us pitchers of water that were not frequently filled or replaced, which may have contributed to the hyper spice that I remember. In addition, chettinad cuisine also had less vegetarian options and it just so happened that a lot of the veggie food we wanted was not available. There's another location in nyc which is closer to me so maybe I'll check that one out to see if they're any different. read more

A bunch of us actually rented a car, drove all the way down to this little town JUST TO EAT AT ANJAPPARs. This is authentic stuff people. not for amateurs....the food is spicey as all hell and it is incredible. I was pretty much euphoric from the spice overload and very very full (but the food is not unhealthy so you feel un-full an hour or so later). Definitely go for the "meals" i.e. the plate with all the awesomeness of several vegetables, one meat staple, yoghurt and dessert. It's a plateful of heaven. Do not miss the chicken 65...(my mouth is watering as i write this), nor the fried fish. And Wash it all down with cool, spiced buttermilk...mmmm mmmmm! This is awesome true-to-its-roots chettinaad food...and is definitely worth the money (even after accounting for gas and car rental !!!) what I wouldn't give for this resto to be in manhattan. So this place has steadily and predictably gone terribly downhill over the past few years. Initially the food was delicious but the service was always suspect. Now the food is appalling and the service is non-existent. We got up several times during Sunday lunch to get our own napkins and utensils. Our food was staggered and so the last mutton dish arrived after all were well past lunch. Plus no one seemed to have any idea of what was going on. In the past, we justified patronage of this place because we liked the food. Now we can safely say that there is really no reason at all to eat here...
