This is an update to a prior review. This has been one of our favorite restaurants in the area but our last visit fell short. We ordered the family platter and a hummus to go. We were told it would take 30-35 minutes, which is fine for cooked to order food. It really wasn't very busy, but the order took 50 minutes. The order was sitting on their counter ready to go, but it appeared they were backed up with making the bread. Once the bread came out, they bagged it up and we were ready to go. They almost forgot to give us the side salad, but they remembered before we left. Now for the food... - The bread that we waited for- was doughy and undercooked. It had burnt pieces stuck to it and they were not shaped as nicely as their usual bread. - The hummus side that we ordered, which was almost $8, was a half filled half pint container (very small amount) of what appeared more like a sauce rather than the thick hummus we are accustomed t. I wouldn't order this again. - The salad was watery...they need to drain the water better - The rice was cold - I think it was sitting out too long - Now for the main event - the meats - we enjoyed the flavor. This saved our dinner, we did enjoy the meats. We called them about the bread and they were apologetic, and told us we can stop by for bread next time we are there. As this is one of my favorite restaurants, I want to give them an opportunity to do better next time! The afghan bread and their rice have alway been my favorite part of their meals! I think it was an off night for them, I'd definitely give them a chance again in the future. read more

Afghan Kabob and Grill continues to provide delicious food. I have been coming here for years now. The food here is still absolutely amazing.... a flavorful mix of spices. Everything from the Chicken Chapli Kabob, Chicken Gyro Platter, Chicken Tikka Masala, Beef Kabob to the fresh made naan is delicious. The hummus is a must try. The prices are still extremely reasonable and the portion sizes are large. The service and staff is also very personable, friendly and full of suggestions. The interior has a casual front side with tables and the back has some booths with some ethnic decor. There are not many Afghan restaurants in the area, but hands down this is one of the best ones I've been too. I definitely plan on continuing to eat here. read more

I've only ordered take out but every single time I do it's hot and DELICIOUS! Such great food, some kind of Afghani/Indian fusion going on here and it's amazing. The family kebab platter is a must have: amazingly tender long grain rice with currants topped with the best Kefta I've ever had, tandoori chicken, huge tender lamb cubes and an amazing chicken kebab that's so tender and deeply flavored with citrus and spices, this dish is a standout and at $55 it's a bargain, easily could feed a family of five, comes with this amazing whole wheat bread that must be afghani. I always love the samosa chaat in chicken or vegetarian that's hard to describe, but I researched it and think it's street food from India, they chop up a samosa and cover it in rice and cholay (chicken peas), it's cheap and filling and seriously delicious. The eggplant dip is great it's called banjan dip, loaded with garlic it's a nice addition. Another great add on is the meats, they offer most meats as side orders, pairs perfectly with two sharing an entree or two or with the fantastic family kebab platter if you have more hungry mouths to feed. So great to taste food from Afghans, hope to see more new dishes I don't know! read more

After reading the reviews, we decided to give this place a try. The restaurant is long, with tables lined up just a few feet away from the windows. There is also a dining area in the back, which is sectioned off with an elaborate archway. We ordered the appetizer platter, which has hummus, banjin dip, falafel and chopped salad served with Afghan naan, Hubs said that this was the best item we ordered all night. Loved the falafel and the dip and bread. Daughter ordered the tandoori chicken kabob and thought it was ok. She thought it was a little dry and said it could use a little sauce. Hubs ordered the salmon kabob and thought it was dry, but he didn't know if he could order it rare or medium. He said that the rice was pretty nice and he loved the onion. I thought the salmon was a bit overdone and dry. I ordered the Milk chai and this was delicious. This was freshly made and I loved it. Service was very friendly and quick. Owner was telling us if there's something we didn't like, he'd gladly give us something else. Will definitely return to try other items on the menu! read more

My friend and I had an amazing meal the other day at Afghan Kabob and Grill! It was my first time trying Afghani/Pakistani food and everything was delicious! Usman was very hospitable and kind and did a great job explaining the menu to us. We tried a bunch of appetizers including bolani kachalou, reshmi kebab, chicken samosa, loaded fries with beef and chicken, and naan with hummus and babaganoush. I have to say, the hummus was what really blew me away - how could something so simple be so delicious? We tried the cheeseburger and rice pilaf with assorted meats like lamb, chicken, beef and shrimp. The meats were all tender and seasoned well. I also really loved the mango lassi drink, it was thick, sweet and refreshing, perfect on a summer day. We finished off with familiar desserts like baklava which I've had before. Then we tried for the first time the gulab jamun, which was fried dough with sugar syrup flavored with rose water, as well as rasmalai, which was a dessert soaked in a rich milk and flavored with cardimon and nuts. It was really great to try so many new foods and experience a bit of the culture. I highly recommend this restaurant when in the North Brunswick area! read more

This place has such good food! I love the decorations in the restaurant, they are very authentic. One downside is that they don't really have the heater on during the winter so make sure to be wearing a sweater if you are going to eat there. We got the hummus and combination platter #2. I don't eat beef, and they happily substituted the beef for another chicken dish. So our platter came with lamb tikka, chicken tikka, and chicken seekh kabobs. So good!! The hummus was phenomenal as well, it's spicy and creamy and it comes with amazing naan that you can tell it came straight out of the oven. Loved our experience here overall. The service got slow towards the end of the night though. Still would recommend to anybody who is looking for a great dinner! read more

This place was so bad, bad is an understatement. Ordered a kabob combination for 1, there was a long peice of hair in the rice. The server came back and said it's not ours because our staff is only men like excuse me?? That was not our hair cooked inside the rice. She didn't apologize and said I'll jus give you a new plate of rice. They did not even remove it off the bill or apologize. We ordered a couple of things, it looks like she was writing it down but she forgot a coke, she kept my brother waiting and said you didn't order a sandwich but we clearly did. Chicken was undercooked, sauces were flavorless. Saw a cockroach while eating. Krispy Krust is across the street, do yourself a favor and avoid at all costs. read more

First timer ... it was good .. few items were really awesome and some were OK. Hummus and Felafel were really good. Loved the taste of hummus !! Really went well with the bread they gave .. we asked them for suggestion for kebab and they told chapli kebab. We actually didn't like that much. It was average . I don't think we will order chapli again. My friend then had lamb gyro. He really liked it ... it was soft and tasted good with rice. Wait time was there for take away order. Seriously the best gyro meat I've ever had. Like THE BEST. Can't believe they packed so much flavor into gyro meat. So tender and well seasoned that I wish every gyro meat tasted that good. Hence the lamb gyro plate was a medeterran life changer in New Jersey. We also had the hummus which was good and smooth, and homemade, but that gyro plate had all my attention. They give you two sauce squeeze things on the side so you can add tahini sauce or some other sauce if you want, and the lamb played comes with bread and salad and enough rice for 3 people. The best chicken kabobs I have had in a long time. I tried the Mediterranean ones, they were marinated and grilled over charcoal (my guess based on taste) and were cooked to perfection. I loved the Afghan rice, also fresh, light/fluffy with raisins and carrots. Their sauces were delicious, one with dill/cream and the other a cilantro based one. I will drive for this place. Prices were very friendly. Service also, we were greeted so warmly and thanked as we left. Can't wait to come back! read more

We ordered a mixed Gyro platter and lamb tikka kebab and both were very good. I wish I knew what the mixed Gyro platter was before I ordered- it was amazing it was chunks of real chicken and chunks of real lamb with peppers and onions. My lamb tikka was very good too. The salad of chopped cucumbers & tomatoes was refreshing - similar to a Greek salad. The service was welcoming, friendly and accurate and the restaurant itself seems very clean. Try it! read more

We have been attracted to this place because of a prior experience at khyber pass in Manhattan. We ate there and we loved it. Since then when we hear Afghan we say let's go. So we went. And shocked afghan buffalo wings. Hahaha. It was a mix of fast food American and some kabobs. Samosa was delicious. Maybe because we were hungry but for that we can go. The afghan rice we go for was not at the level of our expectations Kids got wings. Came late. Other cheesesteak. And that was also. Ehh Service was beyond horrible. The reason of the 3 star is for mediocre food and cheap prices. Service needs to change. They had a server who did not know what they were selling. But the price is unbeatable read more

This is one of my local favorites! I've definitely ordered everything on the menu at least once. I've got nothing but good things to say about this place and anyone who has ever served me there. I was tempted to update my review after reading some recent ones here that mentioned poor service. Perhaps they did undergo a change in ownership or management recently, but I can report that those complaints were not in evidence the other night. We were treated to a friendly and smiling waiter, silverware and napkins, and a pitcher of water, along with bottles of their signature sauces. After walking out of the Asian restaurant in the same shopping center mid-meal, due to the horrible food and the uncaring attitude of the owner, this was a welcome relief. Since we'd eaten a little bit at the other place, sharing a dish was in order. The Mediterranean Kabob fit the bill. The chicken was tender and the rice was fantastic - a touch of what seemed to be cinnamon amped up the flavor, and it didn't have that dried-up steam table taste and feel. And it was not salty at all! I'm not totally crazy about the Afghan pita, which is a little too thick for my taste, but everyone else loved it. A very substantial and hearty falafel wrap rounded up our order. Everything was fresh, tasty, and reasonably priced. I'd rate it 4 1/2 stars, but rounding it up to 5, because I'm thrilled that it's still good as ever. And it also made for a happy ending to the earlier disastrous dining experience. read more

Took a drive to explore the local food spots and ended up picking up lamb kabob and gyro platter. The staff were great - welcoming and friendly - a real 'we'll take care of you" vibe. The expectation of how long the food will take was set and met, which to me goes a long way. The food itself was in point. Lots of flavor in the meat and the rice, and plenty of sauce. It was a bit pricey compared to the amount of meat that I'm used to at my local spot in Brooklyn but this is a much better facility. Can't wait until the world is back to normal and I can try dining here in all it's glory. read more

This hidden gem blew me away! I came here with a friend and we ordered the Chicken Rashida and Mediterranean Kebab. The chicken rashida was more like a curry and the mediterranean kebab was marinated chicken. The chicken was very tender and flavorful. Both are accompanied with Afghan rice and bread which only add to the flavor. The rice is simple, but the extra raisins make it interesting. The Afghan bread was served warm and was SO delicious. Perfect for dipping in the chicken rashida. The interior was very casual and reminded me of a cafeteria. You order at the counter and they will bring the food to you. I had seen this place before in passing, but had not eaten in before. However, I've had takeout from another location in Hamilton, which was good. We were looking for a place to eat to celebrate my sister's birthday, and with a few dietary restrictions in our party, we landed on this as a place with ample options. Because of our dietary restrictions, along with our menus they brought us an allergy list, which was somewhat helpful but a little confusing too. I ordered a lamb dish, which was delicious. Absolutely the most delicious Afghani food in the area. The kabobs are perfectly seasoned and their chicken tenders are a must try (they tasted like they were dipped in pakora batter before they were fried, yum!) Their best deal during Covid times for families is the family meals. We got the Sample Kabob platter for 6, for $59.99. It came with a big tray of rice, big tray of kabobs, salad and bread and all the sauces on the side. Portions were generous for 6 people, we even had some food leftover which came in handy with the kids the next day. Highly recommend this restaurant. The customer service is top notch too. This place is a hidden gem in the suburbs of North Brunswick. If you're a fan of kebabs, this is definitely a place you want to check out. They're mainly known for their kebabs but they also have a variety of other selections such as curries, sandwiches, wings, etc. I actually haven't ordered anything else but kebabs and apps but I'm planning to try the curry the next time I go! If you're coming with a group or even just one person, I'd recommend ordering family style. That way you can taste a little bit of everything. I'd start with the hummus and pita. It sounds like an average dish, but this place puts a good kick on it. The hummus is topped with this spicy seasoning that gives it the perfect kick. The pita is also very different from normal pitas you would find at most restaurants. It's very different from your typical hummus and pita platter. The banjan dip is also good (similar to baba ganoush), but I'd pick the hummus over the baba ganoush. For main entrees, I'd recommend getting mixed kebabs - whether it's one of the combination plates, the sample platter or just multiple entrees of any of the kebab plates. All the meat is cooked to perfection and seasoned just right. It's all a matter of preference of meat and whether you prefer skewers or seekh kebab. I've tried the chicken kebab, chicken seekh kebab, lamb tikka kebab, and beef seekh kebab. All of them were so good!! Highly recommend this place and definitely plan on coming back in the near future whenever I'm craving kebabs! read more

I must have caught them on a bad day previously and I'm here to rectify my review! I decided to try them again via DoorDash because I was craving a mixed gyro platter and some wings but had zero desire to leave the house (one of those days...) Not only did the food come quickly (and hot!), but the food was a million times better than when I dined in. I have no explanation, but everything had terrific flavor, the yogurt sauce was on point, and the wings are the best ones I've had in the last year. I'm 100% converted! :) read more
