We were looking for a light dessert after our dinner and found Anko, which completely blew away all our expectations. I've had shaved ice before, but was always a little put off because the dishes usually end up tasting too icy in some spots and too syrupy in others. But Anko has undoubtedly raised the bar when it comes to shaved ice. The texture is a surprisingly milky, creamy consistency that you almost wouldn't think is ice at all. After putting in our order, there was a slight wait (around 12 minutes), which felt a little longer than anticipated, considering that the place was relatively empty. However, the slightly-longer wait is absolutely worth the food quality. We got the Oreo Cheesecake flavor which we highly recommend. It really does taste like a lighter cookies and cream ice cream without feeling completely watered down. Honestly, most of the flavors sound great and I'll definitely be trying something else the next time I'm in the area (mango is next on my list). Although the portion sizes are slightly smaller compared to other shaved ice spots, the quality and consistency more than make up for it. The interior is nice too; it's well-lit, spacious, and was fairly empty when we were there. Highly recommend if you like sweets, but never really understood the love for shaved ice because Anko definitely does it way better than everyone else. read more

This has been on my bookmark list forever and I'm so glad I finally was in the area to try it. I visited on a weekday and it wasn't crowded. Parking is pretty limited since it's on the corner of a busy street. They require proof of vaccination if you're dining in. I ordered the mango bingsu and was pleasantly surprised by the portions. I shared this with my little cousin and we were full by the time we finished it. The shaved ice is so fluffy and melt directly in your mouth. It should be renamed as shaven snow because that's what the texture is like! Unlike many other bingsu establishments I've tried, I appreciate how they make the effort to add condensed milk and toppings to the bottom, middle, and top of the bingsu. This prevents me from eating just ice halfway through the bowl. I was too full to try the taiyaki but I will try this next time I come. As a big bingsoo lover, I was ready to try and enjoy their inejolmi and strawberry flavors. The interior was very cute and they were some other customers who were also studying there and they had drink options, so possibly a good lil study spot as well. But back to the star of the show: bingsoo. What I loved about their bingsoo is that of course you have the pretty aesthetic topping, but there's also a middle layer of whatever topping you choose so it's not just delicious flavor on top and then eating purely ice with not flavoring for the rest of the bowl( because you never think of saving it for the end). The shaved ice was so soft and there were multiple layers of mango underneath the top! I first came here to get the taiyaki. There is a choice of custard, nutella, and red bean as the filling. Red bean is traditional so you can't go wrong with that, although I prefer custard myself. They make them fresh to order, so they comes out super hot. Four per order. The outside isn't too crunchy and they should definitely be eaten warm but not right away if possible. 10/10 begging to burn yourself otherwise. The bingsoo (Korean shaved ice) game in Koreatown is pretty fierce, but Anko does not disappoint! We got the oreo creamcheese bingsoo and the mango bingsoo. Both were very good! The bingsoo in general was very finely ground to perfection, while the layering of the bingsoo was very nice; instead of putting toppings and sauces only on top, the toppings and sauce were in an additional interior layer, which made eating the dessert as equally satisfying as you ate past the top. The oreo creamcheese is good if you enjoy these flavors, but if you do not like things to be too sweet (i.e. "the Asian sweetness level"), this may not be the best choice! The mango was still pretty sweet, but it is more in accordance to the Asian sweetness standard. That being said, both were overall delicious. I also cannot post this review without acknowledging the Mom and Pop nature of Anko. The lady who helped us was working very hard and treated us very politely.
