Anko has some of the best sushi in the city! It's in the Streatery which is a few restaurants under one roof with a big common area. I love the concept and hope it stays around. Sometimes it's packed and sometimes it's empty. Anko itself is just a tiny little shack in the corner of the restaurant, but don't let that fool you. They have a big omakase menu. Items start around $3 and go up depending on the ingredients. I believe you can get the whole Omakase menu for a set discounted price. Now for the food. I love love love their handrolls. They aren't on the menu so you have to ask about them. The spicy scallop handroll is my favorite. I did not love the deep fried roll so I would still with the raw sushi. Their poke bowl is amazing. My favorite omakase items are Aburi Toro Salmon and Crispy sushi spicy tuna tartare. read more

This is probably the only place I will be able to get sushi from now on. This place is incredible. I have never had sushi that tastes as good as this outside of Japan. This rice is warm, the fish is fresh, the pieces are the correct size and the spice level is perfect. I can't even have enough words. I hope it never closes! This place is great. I go here for a more casual atmosphere and sushi. The restaurant is in a the Streatery which is a food hall. They have specials that they post about throughout the week. I have had several of their nigiri. My favorite is the salmon toro and the regular salmon. All of the toro's in general are good. Miso soup is also excellent. Ginger salad is very good and a big portion, you could split it between two. Cucumber salad is great! It's more of a sweet sour taste, and a great portion. Anglo Sushi is part of Louisville StrEATry. It offers primarily sushi and also promotes weekly Wednesday meals. (I really wish ramen was available regularly!) Menus are available at the front entrance and on the wall near the space. Order from them as well as pay. My husband opted for his meal at Anko. He received his miso soup and seaweed salad fairly quickly and enjoyed both. His two rolls came out long, long afterward. So long that the rest of us had received and eaten our meals. Service is a bit slow as the space has only one chef making rolls and a runner taking orders and dropping off food. We noticed other Anko customers were receiving the same wait. Overall he enjoyed his meal but mentioned it was basic and nothing to bring him back. He said his rolls were basic and he avoided the others due to pricing. read more

Anko sushi is definitely a hidden gem. I randomly found Anko on Google map when I was in the area. I immediately changed my dinner plan to come here instead. It was definitely a steal for $60 omakase nigiri set menu. Super fresh and high quality fish. So gooood!!! Located in Streatery, Anko Sushi was the star of the show for me. Located right as you walk in on the left they have the menus listed and you order from them separately from the rest. The owner was working hard behind the counter making the carry out orders while still tending to the folks in the food hall. Our food came out super quick, it was fresh and full of flavor. While we were sitting there we saw so many folks come in and pick up their orders and the owner always had a smile on his face. The buzz surrounding this place has been deafening. Since I'm a long-time sushi fan, Anko vaulted to the top of my to-try list shortly after opening. It took me a few months to make my way to the Louisville StrEATery - which is essentially a trendy, standalone food court - but I eagerly took in the sights and willfully over-ordered four rolls with my girlfriend. Anko is tiny, surprisingly so. The small scale means that even though the employees worked like energizer bunnies, the wait for our food ended up being substantial. I've got to give them high marks for presentation, though - the aesthetic of the rolls was novel and as effortful as any spot in town. Look at my photos and your mouth may start to water. They're beautiful! Here, though, is where the superlatives end. My bar for sushi in Louisville is Oishii, which - along with Sapporo - is one of two places I'd award with five stars. Sapporo gets five because of their amazing happy-hour deals: you can enjoy four-star sushi for one-star prices; you can't beat that! Oishii receives five stars because they're just flat-out good. Anko might be a hair more expensive than Oishii, but their pricing is comparable. The trouble is, Oishii's rolls just taste better. If Oishii is a five, Anko is more in the three realm. And Oishii features faster service, servers who check on you, slightly more generous portions, and better ambiance. I like Anko, I just can't imagine seeking it out when Oishii is a competing option. The StrEATery is cool, so I'll no doubt find myself back there. And when I do, I'll probably grab another Anko roll or two. Although Anko didn't impress me the way they've impressed many patrons, I'm still grateful for any additional sushi options in our city. read more

Hooray for good sushi! Typically I stick to my tried and true places but I was meeting friends for a picnic on the southside and decided to try Anko based on glowing reviews. This was an excellent decision. I ordered online through the Toast app and my order as ready right on time. Anko is located in the Streatery and is the first stall on the left after you enter. The menu is posted on the wall with prices and descriptions in case you opt to order upon arriving and/or dine in. The gentleman staffing the counter was courteous and helpfully warned me the soup was "very hot." True story. I ordered miso soup, seaweed salad, and an avocado roll. Everything was perfect. Perfect! The soup had a subtle miso flavor that wasn't overpowering and the tofu and wakame were the perfect textures. The seaweed salad was amazing - just the right amount of dressing and again, spot on with the texture. The avocado roll was fresh, rolled beautifully, and had just the right balance between creamy avocado, rice, and wrap. Pricing is incredibly reasonable, especially for the quality. It's quite possible I've found my new favorite sushi place. read more

Ho-boy. Anko Sushi is magic. I'm afraid to give this review for fear of others knowing this gem. But Anko needs the spotlight and more need to be in the area and visiting him. The spot is located inside the Streatery, a food hall with various delicious options for everyone, but with an asian focus for sure. While you're waiting on your sushi to be prepared by hand you can order a boba tea or grab a thai tea from two other vendors! Anko does a daily special menu with omakase boards, hand rolls, nigiri boards, etc depending on the day of the week. They even have ramen specials some times! Every piece i've had there has always been a delight and prepared with so much knowledge, care and respect for the fish, the history and your dining experience. Prepare to wait a little bit, especially if you hit at peak meal times and especially especially on weekends. But fear not, every moment of wait only builds the wonder of how impressed you'll be when it arrives. Also, grab yourself a seaweed salad or other small dish to snack on while you wait! I went on a Wednesday when a trivia night was going on. Despite a solid crowd, I easily found a seat (there's plenty of space!), and my rolls and salad came out relatively quickly. The presentation was absolutely beautiful, and the rolls were fantastic. I really don't know what else to say other than you should try it. The best sushi place in Louisville without a doubt, I've been to all the other recommended ones here like DKD, osaka, yi, etc. and I always end up coming back here at least once a week. I am not from Louisville but live here now but everyone I've brought here, local and from out of town, always agree this is the best sushi place they've had in Kentucky. Anko is easily comparable to nationally recognized sushi restaurant and I've eaten sushi my entire life. Numerous trips to Japan where I've been to Toyosu fish market and before that Tsukiji, and the quality is the same which is expected because this is where Anh, the chef, gets his fish imported from. I've had experiences at several Michelin starred restaurants such as Craft Omakase or Tatsu, and several others and Anko does not lag behind at all in quality or taste while much more reasonably priced. I will be here for the next few years and I am so glad a place like Anko exists to fulfill my sushi cravings! read more

Be prepared for Anko Sushi to blow your sushi brain! 1000% times better than famous Michelin starred sushi restaurants in San Diego and the West Coast. For I did not know true sashimi perfection until Anko! We ordered our favorite, Omasake! The Nigiri was served at the perfect temperature, with the visual acting as a feast for the eyes.  As for pricing, I.was.blown.away! I've paid upwards of $16-$21 per sashimi/nigiri. The total for our Tuesday Omasake board was $47 - *to note* it would be nice if the amount was told prior to ordering (as we would have ordered fewer rolls). So, come prepared to spend $50 - well spent, though! One aspect we did notice is that rolls were smaller than other sushi restaurants in Louisville. It's not a big deal, but something to consider when ordering or sharing with a table! Besides being fluxxed with orders on Omasake Tuesday, our Omasake plate and rolls arrived in fifteen minutes or less! All in all, my new favorite sushi restaurant in Louisville. If you are in the Louisville area and want to try some of the most unique sushi anywhere give this place a try. Their menu is very unique with rolls you won't see anywhere else. I ordered the $53 Omakase and it was excellent. Very unique with ingredients I've never had before. Very fresh and the presentation was excellent. I'm going to give this place another try on their hand roll specials on Wednesdays. I'm giving five stars because the sushi is amazing. I wasn't a big fan of the restaurant or having to order drinks from a different vendor. I would have bought another beer but didn't want to leave my food unguarded to get it. Theres a reason this place is rated as high as they are. Worked in a Japanese restaurant for 3 years in my 20s and I was the only who worked there as English being their first language. I learned a lot about the culture and food and this place is the first time I felt "at home" The onigiri reminds me of the lunches I would have with the employees in between shifts. It's easy to see and taste that Owner/Chef Ahn Le truly cares about the food he puts in front of you. It's top notch in quality and simply amazing. The location is a bit off but 100% screams Louisville culture. I also highly suggest grabbing a beer or two at the bar right across the way from Anko. They have Sapporo on top and and pairs perfectly with the sushi that chef Ahn son prepares. Hands down, best sushi in Louisville... by a long shot. I just wish I had pictures to share. Next time! This was our first time trying Anko. It was ordered for delivery and the packaging was very nice. I wasn't expecting a party tray but for 9 rolls it was perfect. Everything was very flavorful. The rolls were customizable, something I hadn't seen before, so we only did that to 1 roll. Some of the options were dishes I'd seen before but with a twist. Anko is building a buzz for itself so we had to come try it. Their Facebook and Insta pages show they're in it for the love of Japanese food and are serving up bespoke specials you can't get anywhere else in town (okonomiyaki one day, katsu sando the next; unique sobas, udons and donburis the next). This is fantastic! And prices are very reasonable: $12-20 per person can get you a full meal. What's surprising is its location: you'd expect this to be the latest addition to Frankfort Ave or the Highlands but it's a small corner kiosk in a shared food hall in Beechmont, the nabe just west of the SDF airport (if you've been to Annie's Cafe for Vietnamese food, it's on the same block). Formally named the StrEatery, it's an open room with communal tables in the middle and several food stalls -- Anko plus Mochi Dog, Fresh Out the Box (which also has a stall at Logan Street Market), a bar, and a few others -- around the perimeter. So the atmosphere is extremely casual. The printed menu is roll-heavy, with a few nice add-ons: tamago-yaki (omelet on a stick), onigiri (rice balls), poke and donburi (fish-topped rice bowls). There are 6 vegetarian roll options, and some cooked/fried rolls for your friends who wince at raw fish. Strangely, there's sashimi but no nigiri options on the printed menu; maybe you can special-order it but it's notably absent. Or you can go on a Tuesday, when they offer an omakase (chef's choice) sushi plate. New fish deliveries are Tuesdays so that's definitely the best day to come. On the food we ordered: - Onigiri are filled with salmon, come in an order of 2, and each is the size of a softball. They're actually too big in my opinion. - The tamago-yaki is very nicely made and again, comes with 2 skewers which are each 6+ inches long. That's a lot of egg! - I ordered the Paraduxx roll because it's the first one on the signature list. It had a great flavor and left me very satisfied. But it was large. I wonder if chefs are captive to voracious Louisville appetites, but for me, a piece of sushi should fit in your mouth. We've had rolls at other places -- Oishii jumps to mind -- that are close to hockey pucks; that's a bad eating experience to me. The Paraduxx isn't that huge, but if you share my likely-unpopular opinion about sushi size, be mindful. Bottom line: should you try Anko? If you like sushi, rolls, or Japanese food -- Absolutely! Go Tuesday or Wednesday when the fish is freshest and the chef's specials are available. This is a passion-driven place that Louisville diners should ensure stays open and supported. It was all incredibly delicious, fresh, and it was fun, too, moving through and trying each one. I'm very grateful that Anko has opened and that an experience like this is now an option in Louisville. I also got a sunset roll on the side, and it was well made and fresh as well. The reviews here appear to be a congregation of serious foodies, and they all hit the nail on the head: Anko is the best. Finally, Louisville has fantastic sushi. While Louisville has long been a great food town, great sushi was the one thing lacking, probably due to the scant Japanese population. Not anymore. Anko was recommended to us by a group venturing to Lexington for Japanese food (as we were), and they were absolutely right. The rolls here are as good as anything in town, but what you're really coming for is the sashimi and nigiri, especially the Omakase. At an extremely affordable price, it's as good as any Omakase I've ever had, including ones in triple figures. Now, the presentation and delivery is certainly not as intricate as you might find at more expensive, more intimate settings; but the flip side is that Anko is available to pretty much anyone who wants to come out. The food itself is of the highest quality, and the subtle flavors added by the chef combine with the fish immaculately. I couldn't recommend Anko any higher. read more
