Server was extremely kind and pleasant, but distracted with additional tasks of taking to-go phone orders, retrieving orders for patrons and checking out those who made purchases. Because she was extremely busy with takeout we were left waiting for service at times. Ambiance was enhanced with dark decor and black upholstered chairs. It was very nice. Dining area was small but was not tight. The only negative was the very busy, open area to the dining room that served as waiting and pick up area for the orders to go. This was our first visit and we were a bit nervous based on the rundown looking outside of the building, but inside was clean, food was very good and service was above average. Once inside, staff was busy but very friendly and the dining room dark and chill. Meditative music played. Contemplative! We quickly ordered an appetizer, the Sexy Jalapeño - deep-fried with cream, spicy tuna and salmon. Mighty tasty! Classic Yamato restaurant if you have been to one before this is pretty much the same. Sushi is good and so is the food. Service is usually prompt and I haven't really had to wait very long. I love Yamato they pop up in smaller towns and give a variety to the regular fast food joints that you usually only would get in a small town. The kids love the different flavor sodas and we all love the Yum Yum sauce that comes with the salad. The service is always fast and polite. Orders To-Go seems to be what a lot of locals do here. What a great addition to Charlestown! Basic but authentic interior, relaxing Japanese meditation music and nicer than expected seating and tables. TV I. The back is of tropical fish instead of sports or news. I had teriyaki chicken and fried rice. Just a tad too much salt for my tastes, most will not mind. Fried rice was great! Serveice friendly and extremely fast, again not what I would expect for this area. I'll be a regular for lunch if they keep this up, even if they were in Louisville. And how it seems to be going that way with Mexican restaurants too? We were surprised to find a Japanese restaurant in Charlestown, IN. As of today, I am guessing the population of Charlestown is probably about 10000-ish people. I did not have high expectations but we decided to check it out for lunch because of the good yelp reviews. The menu is not large and the main choices are hibachi items and bento boxes (see menu picture). I ordered the shrimp teriyaki bento box and my buddy the steak teriyaki. The prices are very affordable for the lunch specials ($7-$8) and it comes with soup, a bit of salad, rice, a small spring roll, 4 small pieces of a California roll and (in my case) shrimp teriyaki. All of the food was well prepared and quite tasty. Honestly, I was pleasantly surprised about the quality of the food and the prices were very easy on the wallet too. Furthermore, I felt good about not eating fast food for lunch and having this healthy-ish food instead. Service was friendly and prompt. Stopped in the first Asian restaurant in Charlestown. At this time they didn't have their alcohol license yet. They were still new on the block ; however the service was good and welcomed with a smile. I would recommend this restaurant if your in town looking for Asian. I'm here to give an out-of-towner's perspective. We eat sushi.... a lot. We ordered cucumber rolls for our daughter, gyoza, a spicy tuna roll and a bento box with the steak that comes with soup and salad. Soup was ok, pretty typical. Although I appreciate that they cleaned the lettuce, my salad had water in the bottom of the bowl, and quite a bit at that. The gyoza itself lacked flavor and the sauce that came with it literally had no flavor. I tasted it by itself, and basically nothing. Bento box was fine, typical but the teriyaki sauce was probably the most flavorful thing on the table. Now to the sushi. The cucumber roll, although pretty with nice knife cuts, tasted like cleaner and I'm pretty sure the "tuna" roll had no tuna in it! The person who ordered it opened it up to check and felt the contents. All we could find was crunchy pieces and spicy mayo. I added a photo so you could see for yourself. It was so bad we went through the drive trough at McDonalds across the street when we were done, if that tells you anything. The pleasant end to this story is that the person in front of us in the drive thru line paid for our food, which was very nice. Thanks mysterious Indiana resident! read more

I have eaten at Yamato at least 10 times since opened several months ago. The food has been consistent, the prices reasonable, and the service most often efficient. A couple of times I had a longer wait than expected, when I was one of only two or three tables present. Another time I had a waitress who was too forthcoming with personal information. Are you kidding with the 4 Stars? Lol. . The service was good. I don't have any complaints about the services from the waitresses but the food is whole other issue. My salad had water in the bottom of the bowl. The fried rice tasted like it sat in a rice cooker ( DEFINITELY NOT FRESH COOKED). The Shrimp Tempura roll was NOT a shrimp tempura roll. The shrimp was deep fried in some kind of batter you'd find from Long John Silvers restaurant. The same batter when you order the fried shrimp. The Hibachi Chicken was old chicken that sat in a Tupperware (precooked) and sauce poured over it after it was heated up. My husband is a chef and studied at Sullivan University and he couldn't even finish his food. We left and went across the street to McDonald's and it tasted MUCH better than this place. The menu prices are EXTREMELY overpriced for the lack of flavor from this cheap food. Good Luck if you want to waste your money on flavorless food. I guess when you have no sense of what QUALITY food SHOULD taste like, this will the perfect place to be. read more
