Ich liebe Annelores deutsche Bäckerei! I first got goodies from Annelore's booth at the State Farmer's Market in Raleigh. The Apfel (apple) turnover was delicious, as was the Heidelbeerkuchen (blueberry cake) and Zitronenschnitten (lemon bar). I saw a nice gentlemen there that day who I think may be part owner; based on what I see on their website I wonder if it was Herr Norbert. While waiting for another guy behind the counter to bag my goodies, I happened to mention (to who I think was Norbert) that I'm learning German, and he spoke some basic German to me! Which I understood - OMG, must tell my German teacher. A couple weeks later I needed to bring desserts to our monthly Book Club meeting, and Annelore's was my first thought. I decided to visit their actual store in Cary. Even though it's an hour away from home, I stopped by one day when I had to go to Raleigh for an appointment. An Annelore's employee helped me with selecting about six cake slices and 2-3 different bars, plus some German cookies. The inside of the store is very clean, and there are some places to sit if you'd like to eat there. The employees were kind and helpful (and patient, in my case, trying to decide what to buy for a Book Club group I'd never met in person). Annelore's German Bakery is a wonderful way to take care of your dessert needs and support a local business at the same time. If you need a dessert, cake, scones, or other treats for your home gathering, BBQ, church social, potluck, business lunch, or other event, I would definitely let Annelore's take care of that part for you! 10/10, highly recommend! Came here recently and really enjoyed my visit! First, there's a small parking lot right next to the bakery, and I think a larger parking lot at the rear of the building. I got lucky and snagged a spot near the front, though :) I looked around at everything and it all looked so tasty! I decided to grab a loaf of pumpernickel bread, but next time I'll probably get a dessert or two. The staff were helpful throughout my visit. They asked me if I wanted my bread sliced, and when I replied in the affirmative, gave me a helpful chart with a lot of different options for how thick I wanted each slice :) I took the bread home, stuck it in the oven, and ate it with some butter and jam. Stopped into this bakery on a whim driving by. Very clean interior, and the bakery case had plenty to choose from. I purchased the honeycomb and it was very tasty. I wouldn't say that the service was over the top. She did wait patiently as we looked at everything for quite some time and checked us out, but never did offer up any suggestions or help as to how things taste or what we might want to try. Everything stands from last time I reviewed, fantastic bakery with fair prices, friendly/knowledgeable staff, and incredibly delectable treats. One thing that had a slight improvement but I will insist desperately needs improvement is their packaging. While this time I did get plastic clamshell containers, which is better than the foam lunch clamshell I got a full tart in last time, it was still a bit disappointing. The small paper bags for the cookies made sense, but then it was all thrown into a generic yellow smiley face thank you plastic grocery bag. I beg, please invest in some nice bakery cardboard boces, that way multiple treats can go into a single box too, and then just some nice paper bags. I love the food, but when trying to gift them or take it to somebodies house I feel odd pulling stuff out of a grocery bag and each item being individually in a plastic clamshell. read more

Bottom line: I enjoyed my early morning cheese danish/coffee stop recently at Annelore's German Bakery, as well as the Bee Sting and Prinzregententorte pastries/cakes purchased for later. Nice open bakery shop, clean and bright, with many appetizing selections in the long display case to choose. Good service encountered. The Deets: Looking for a change in breakfast, I stopped by Annelore's German Bakery recently near downtown Cary. Stepping inside, the bakery is bright, open, and very clean with a nice display case area with the counter/register as well as limited seating available. On the latter, there appears to be ample space for more seating in the shop but gives the feeling it is limited by design as the sign on the door indicates that dine-in visits should be limited to one hour "so that future guests may have available seating." I was in the mood for a cheese danish for breakfast so ordered one with coffee and enjoyed there at the bakery. I also ordered a couple of pastries to take home as well, choosing the Prinzregententorte and Bee Sting to enjoy a bit later. The cheese danish was good, being flaky but crisp outside with a soft inside with nice cream cheese filling. Having the Bee Sting pastry a bit on in the day, I enjoy its very light texture and creamy center along with the slight crunch of the topping. However I have to say I most enjoyed the Prinzregententorte the most. This cake, named for a past Bavarian prince regent, is composed of several layers of sponge cake with chocolate buttercream icing on top and between each layer...my kind of cake! Service was good while ordering at the counter, and it was nice that upon leaving they thanked me for my visit as I walked out. A very hit or miss experience. Their Black Forest Cake is probably their best offering. I'd rather come here than go to Guglhupf. Parking is easier and they offer the Black Forest cake by the slice. read more

They have many gluten free options, but you do have to ask, they aren't all labeled in the case. Try the roulade! It's gluten free and so good. Kind of pricey but worth it. read more

My family and I decided to spontaneously stop by on our way home from downtown Cary on a Saturday. We got there about an hour before closing, so I was surprised to see that they still had a fairly decent selection of baked goods available. I tried some of the blueberry bar and the blueberry tart and loved that they weren't overly sweet. They had a nice, strong, natural blueberry flavor and tasted fresh even though it was later in the day. I do wish they had a few more drink options than just drip coffee, but it is nice that they offer 1 drink option rather than none at all. read more

What a wonderful bakery! This was my first time stopping in. I wanted to try everything! I got a selection of both savory and sweet: Spinach & Feta Turnover Mushroom Turnover Potato, Bacon an cheese turnover Blackberry Forest cookie Gingerbread cookie Chocolate pistachio shortbread Almond Florentine Raspberry Cheesecake (my favorite!) The Mushroom Turnover was my favorite of the savory pastries. My husband liked the Potato Bacon one. The only thing I didn't love was the gingerbread cookie. I thought it was a bit dry, but my friend said it is a traditional German gingerbread cookie whereas I'm conditioned for the very sweet and chewy version. The raspberry cheesecake is amazing!! Everything was of superb quality. The texture and moisture of the pastries were exceptional. The flavors were great, ordering the Black Forest cake I was worried it might be too sweet but they put the right amount of sugar where the sugars do not overpower each bite. A small personal preference: their empanada fillings were uneven as it seems to be their style to not mix the contents, but I know that is just personal preference. Having tried almost half their menu (going back for a second round of pastries) I would recommend almost everything especially their ham and cheese croissant. TLDR: Beautiful shop full of neat, organized German treats. I've tried their products before at the Triangle Oktoberfest and passed by the bakery in the past. I finally planned a trip to the bakery. I parked right out front and was greeted upon entering. The store is spacious with ample seating and natural light. The large display case is neatly organized with a variety of German treats. Everything is labeled with the name of the item and price. After looking at all the mouthwatering options, I chose the apfel kuchen, Black Forest cookie, and blueberry turnover. Although not as flavorful as I hoped, the Black Forest cookie was good. It would have been better if paired with coffee or tea, which they do sell. I gave the other treats to coworkers and they loved them! In the past I have tried the pretzels and pfeffernusse cookies, which were good, but a bit dry and the pfeffernusse had too much cinnamon for my taste. Similar to the cookie, the pfeffernusse would have been better if paired with coffee or tea. It is pricy, yet comparable to similar bakeries in Cary. They also sell some alcoholic beverages. Great find. A smidge on the pricy side but given they import many of their ingredients, it's well worth it. Has a mix between German, Austrian and French pastries and Torten vibe. Everything tasted delicious and authentic. Very clean inviting store. Ended up visiting Annelore's stand at the Raleigh farmers market to take some items along for our journey. **AUTHENTIC, TRADITIONAL GERMAN BAKERY IN DOWNTOWN CARY** My Bavarian husband wanted to taste his childhood cake favorites, so we drove 30 minutes to try their must-haves: the Prinzregenten Torte and the Donauwelle. PARKING ======== Not so bad on the weekdays for afternoon tea. BAKERY GOODS ============== PRINZREGENTEN TORTE This seven layered cake starts with sponge cake with chocolate buttercream and topped with a layer of chocolate ganache. Each slice is topped with a gold flake, which was a nice bougie touch. The cake was not overly sweet, but prefer it to be a bit moister in texture. The chocolate ganache tasted too "refrigerated", and I believe at room temperature, it may taste better. RATING: 4/5 DONAUWELLE This traditional German pastry starts with a layer of vanilla sponge cake, then chocolate genoise with fresh Morello cherries, followed by a layer of Bavarian cream, and topped with chocolate ganache. Wasn't overly dry or sweet. RATING: 4/5 PUMPERNICKEL Supposed to be heavy, slightly sweet rye bread made with ground rye. I thought it was a bit on the lighter side (compared to other pumpernickel I've had), but still good quality. RATING: 4/5 MULTIGRAIN BREAD We made cheese sandwiches at home with this and thought it was OK at best. Good quality flour, but in terms of texture, nothing stood out for us. RATING: 3/5 OVERALL ======= Counter service was superb, friendly, efficient, and easy going. They asked me HOW thick I want the breads sliced, and I thought that was AMAZING. However, I thought the paper plates and plastic flatware were not sustainable or aesthetically-pleasing to serve $10 cake slices on, but that is my opinion. I had ordered a black forest cake from the Cary store. It was over $100 probably the most expensive cake I've ever bought. But the worst part was the cake was totally dry. I've had black forest cakes in Germany and in Florida and in Pennsylvania and in New York. They all are loaded with cherry liquor. I checked out Annelore's with my daughter one afternoon, and was pleasantly surprised at the wide range of options they had, from sweet to savory baked goods. I ended up trying the Blueberry Kuchen, which was kind of like a blueberry coffee cake or streusel cake. I thought it was not very sweet, which I actually appreciated. Oftentimes I think coffee cake can be overly sweet, but I think I prefer the subtle sweetness of their kuchen. My daughter went for the Whoopie Pie, which she really enjoyed. I got to try a bite of it, and I felt the chocolate cakes were a tad dry. However, the cream filling was nice and smooth, and also not overly sweet, which again I appreciated. My daughter gladly ate the entire thing with no complaints. The space is nice and clean, it is also very spacious and well-kept. Parking was not an issue when I went, as they have their own parking lot. The staff was also very friendly and patient. We will be back to try more baked goods, I'm sure! read more

I've been wanting to visit this place for a while and then while driving around Cary I saw it and decided to stop to try it. My husband loves German food and we were both excited to try some of their goodies. He got a blueberry cake that was so good and I got a Potato bacon cheese turnover that was also amazing! The guy that works there was very nice and he said that all the breads and pastries are made there in the back of the store and you can actually see them making things back there. My Mom and I enjoyed the cake. My Red Velvet Birthday cake from here was also delicious. My husband and I stopped in and ordered a cup of coffee. He picked a sweet treat and I picked a sweet treat. We shared. The treats were amazing! My husband said "I'm going to look and get something to go, do you want something?" We each picked a second treat. We ate them all that day. I don't recall the German names for everything. Had a taste for Rhubarb Kuchen so I stopped in late this afternoon. There was none out but the nice young girl checked in the back which brought Annelore out. She was so sweet telling me about her family recipe and how it was different from mine. She had a cake cooling in the back but cut it for me. Oh my gosh! lecker! So good! I've never been to a German bakery before, so I enjoyed sampling different sweets at Annelore's Bakery! The bakery is in a small lot just off a main road, so it can be a bit tricky turning in. There also isn't a lot of parking and the parking that is available is a bit hard to navigate. All of that doesn't detract from the food though. When you step in you are immediately hit with sweet and savory smells emanating from a large countertop full of pastries, cakes, and breads galore. Service is friendly and doesn't judge you for mispronouncing the names. Maybe I am a German pastry noob but I think something that would improve the experience is written descriptions of the treats. Some things are self explanatory, like German chocolate cake, but some, like Kouign-amann, were more mysterious. (Update: their website has comprehensive descriptions of all the pastries as well as the history behind some of them!) That was one of the pastries we got, along with a slice of bee sting and a slice of Prinzregenten Torte. Pastries were pricier than those I would find at Asian bakeries, but their quality was definitely top notch. The Kouign-Amann was quite delicious! It tasted a bit like the lovechild of a croissant and a Costco butterfly cookie, the flaky and sticky kind. It was quite rich but still fluffy with the layers. The outside had a slight sugary crust that was caramelized like creme brûlée. The bee sting was not my taste personally, though my friend enjoyed it quite a bit. The pastry is made of yeast based dough so it tastes like bread more than cake. I never thought I'd say this, but it wasn't sweet enough. The cream had a slight spiced taste, I think maybe cardamom. It was thick and slightly yogurt-like. The Prinzregenten Torte was the star of the show for me! It consisted of moist, expertly thin-sliced cake sandwiched between layers of good chocolate buttercream and covered with a chocolate ganache. It didn't fall apart when I stuck my fork in. The chocolate was rich and not sour or cloying. I found myself taking bite after bite without getting tired of it. Annelore's bakery is a lovely place to get your German pastry fix. If you think that's a bit of an obscure craving, come to this bakery, try a slice of Prinzregenten Torte or three, and think again! read more

When heading back to my friends' house, I decided we needed pastries. Because I love them. And one of my friends is German so I thought this would be perfect. I bought an assortment of items. I know I bought the Prince torte (Prinzregenten) and the Bee Sting and a couple of other special items and they were all gobbled up quickly. My German friend said they were very authentic and she was happy with my choices. The bakery is spacious with seating to sit and enjoy. We've been to Annelore's for a couple of times now. Although we love their turnovers and cookies, their special ordered Black Forest Cake was a truly disaster and it completely ruined my husband's birthday. For the nearly $90 price tag, we expected a moist and well flavored cake. However, the cake we got was super dry, flaky and sandy; the whipping cream was thin and unsweetened; the cherry filling was pale. The baker who made this cake does not have enough training of how to make a proper cake. No one wanted a second bite at the party and I felt so guilty that I should have baked my own cake. The cake in the picture was made by me, an amateur baker. I have to say my cake tastes thousand times better than the Black Forest Cake we had from Annelore's. read more

I was born in Germany so I can attest to the authenticity of Annelore's. I used to go to the farmer's market stands and am happy to see that they now have an actual bakery in downtown Cary. The bakery is very open and airy and spacious. There are so many decadent items on display and it was difficult picking what to get. I opted for a blueberry streusel cake and ended up taking it to a German friend's house near Wilmington. She LOVED the cake and said it tasted like home. I would come here for desserts and bread. They have a bread slicer and many great fresh options. The staff was very knowledgable and happy to talk about the contents of the items and help me pick a bread. Next time I will try a coffee. Pricewise, I think they are a bit high yet you are paying for the handcrafted items. A good German bakery in Cary to expand the global porfolio on Chatham (La Farm from France is just down the road as well). read more

My girlfriend has a stuffed turtle who is orange and purple. We once visited here and they had a cookie that looked JUST like Burtle. We couldn't believe it and neither could she!
