I'm always on the hunt for a good savory pastry so I got the ham and cheese croissant and it did not disappoint. Meh. I could've swore that their food used to be good. Not anymore, unless I picked the only 4 terrible items on the list. I had macaroons a few weeks ago, and remember them being good. These were the only items in their selection that had a price, $4, so I got two togo. The lemon bars and blueberry bars looked delicious, so I got two each for after dinner. We got 50 little neck clams, and needed some bread. Their sourdough looked good, so I got a loaf. The sourdough that we bought was literally the most dense bread I have ever eaten. Even soaking it in clam broth did not help. Tried an un-soaked piece, and it was like eating tough jerky. The dogs didn't even want it. After dinner I cut one each of the pastries in quarters to share. The lemon had a very slight taste of lemon (very very slight), and although the blueberry appears to be packed with fruit, it only tasted like soggy dough. (See pic). My last shot was the macaroon. I gave one to my daughter to split with me. She barely split it. The filling was like the mixed it with marshmallows. It stretched while the cookie crushed, and also did not taste good at all. I would like to think they got a new pastry chef that is learning, but sorry, at 42 bucks for that amount of food that was all bad, I'm not going to be another guinea pig. Can't rave enough about this bakery. It's an adorable German bakery tucked away near downtown Cary. The baked goods are so delicious but not too sweet. Plum kuchen and cranberry-apple kuchen. Mmmmm. If you're interested in German pastries, on your next trip to the Farmer's Market, stop at Annelore's. Annelore's was my last stop and by the time I got there, just before closing, there was only kuchen left. I was really looking forward to trying something not-so-common. Not to complain, though, because it was good and not nearly so common after all. In fact: uncommonly good. When the first bite hit my taste buds, I was sold. As much as I liked the plum kuchen, the cranberry apple was even better. It was slightly tart owing to the cranberry; the apple never over compensated to make it too sweet. The cake part was light, not a pound cake texture, but more a true pastry. It was perfect. What I can't figure out though, is how anyone eating a full German meal, which can be pretty filling, then eats this. No way. This is a meal in itself. Yikes. $4 for a sugar cookie?!? I told my kids they could each get one before I saw the price. They weren't even that big and barely decorated. I've had much better sugar cookies for a fraction of the cost elsewhere. I could have easily made an entire batch for the price I paid for two cookies. They tasted fine but such a rip off. My boyfriend and I stopped by the Farmer's Market in Raleigh today and happened to notice the Annelore's stand as we were leaving. We ordered a piece of streusel and LOVED it. My boyfriend's background is German, and he claimed it was the best streusel he'd ever had. It was $4 for a generous slice, and we were informed by the gentleman that the cherries were actually imported from Germany. Best bakery in Raleigh/Cary area, hands down! The quality is amazing, the taste of their baked goods is almost identical to baked goods I've had in Sweden and France and that is excruciatingly difficult to find in this country. The sweet pastries are not too sweet and made with real ingredients, everything is handmade! My favorite so far has to be the apple strudel which is light and fluffy but still crunchy while the filling is perfectly sweet with a nice real apple and cinnamon flavour. Their location in Cary carry many more items and they have coffee and tea, and some drink options for children as well. It's well worth the price for these authentic German baked goods! read more

So based on what the owner advertised, they apparently use zero chemicals in their baked goods, hooray! Their baked goods run at about $5 per piece and they only take cards for orders of $10+ The beestinger was flawlessly fluffy and the cream in the center was not overly sweet! I was kind of bummed by their apple purse- it was on the dry and bready side... There was not much of a selection and it was overpriced. I paid $9 for a small sugar cookie and a bee sting. The best part of this was the bee sting. It reminded me of a modified Italian or French creme filled pastry. I may give an extra star if the proprietor was more professional. He got a little political in his opinions. This is hands down the best authentic German Baker in the Triangle. They sell at the NC State Farmer's Market all week long, the North Hills (Midtown) Farmer's Market on Saturdays and the Western Wake Farmer's Market also on Saturdays. The bakery was started by Norbert and Annelore who are both German born and create all of their pastries using local and authentic ingredients. Their pastries are baked from scratch using traditional German technique and execution. I would tell anyone buying based on price that these pastries and baked goods are worth every penny of what you spend. They are one of a kind and you will not find these types of items anywhere else in the Triangle. Some favorites include the pretzels, cheese bread, anything with baked apples, the seasonal kuchen, and the bee sting cake. When you take one realize that the recipes are of traditional German origin and offer the perfect amount of sweetness. Not too much and not too little. They are never too rich and can be savored bite after bite. Annelore's offers holiday pastries depending on the time of year and their daily selection grows each week. This booth provides me with little pieces of German heaven every time I visit. Everything looks so tasty so deciding what to get is always a challenge. I believe I had the bee sting cake the first time I visited, and sampled various kuchens on different occasions. I am never disappointed and always look forward to stopping by Annelore's when I'm visiting the farmer's market! They even make black forest cakes on special order (made with authentic Kirshwasser brought over from Germany!) and I plan on ordering this for my BFF (and me) for her birthday next month. My husband and I go to the NC State Farmers' Market every Saturday and we ALWAYS get something from Annelore's German Bakery. Annelore does the baking and Norbert, her husband manages the business end of it. Norbert (and his employees) have gotten to know us well over the past couple of years. They are incredibly friendly and it's always wonderful to hear Norbert talk passionately (and knowledgeably) about the baked goods. My husband and I don't give them huge amounts of business (just our weekly stop), but we are always made to feel like very valued customers. The baked goods are absolutely incredible. They are always fresh ("just baked that morning" fresh) and very tasty. The apple purses are one of my personal favorites, along with the veggie strudels (perfect for lunch); my husband loves the soft pretzels and cheese bread. There are always seasonal goodies. In the fall, you cannot beat the pumpkin whoopie pies. Around Christmas, it's the Stollen and the Pfeffernüsse. If the only Pfeffernüsse you've ever had came pre-packaged from a store, you don't know Pfeffernüsse. Annelore's Pfeffernüsse are a staple for me in the fall....they go fabulously with a cup of hot cider! There are too many awesome baked goods to go through here, so I will just say this: EVERYTHING tastes devine. And the taste comes from the ingredients and the authentic German recipes and techniques, not from excessive butter and sugar. I love that the baked goods don't ever taste overly sweet. They are rich without being sickening. Annelore's is in the process of building a brick-and-mortar bakery in Cary. It's great to see them expand due to their success. The sweet pastries are very good but where this place excels is in the savories. The mushroom turnover is amazing and the quiche is very good. The fruit pastries and the more traditional dishes are the best, imo. I have been looking for a more "down-home cooking" feeling bakery, and not so much pomp, since moving here and finally found it. The prices are comparable to other nearby bakeries but the quality and quantity is better. One turnover is more than enough for a decent breakfast. I don't get to the State Farmer's Market often, but whenever I do, I try to grab something from this bakery stand. Everything tastes fresh, not too sweet, and authentic from what little I know of German pastries. My favorites are the fruit kuchens, which are sort of like fruit-topped crumbcakes/cobblers. Their apple streudels are also fantastic--light and flaky, not too sweet or dry. Make sure you give the bakery guy the correct amount of money though. I once misheard the amount I owed for my desired pastry and the money I gave him was too low by $0.25. He gave me the Evil Look of Death and coldly repeated the price of the pastry. I gave an apologetic smile and said that I had misunderstood the price, I was sorry, and fished my wallet for an additional quarter. He repeated the correct price with a cold voice and continued to give me the Evil Look of Death until I gave him that quarter. So...don't cheat him (intentionally or unintentionally) if you want to avoid the Evil Look of Death. read more

This is my favourite German bakery in the triangle area. Their stuff is authentic and delicious. They also don't over-sugar their cakes, which is rare. The peach kuchen (German for Cake) is really really good - again, you'd think that a canned peach cake would be killing sweet, but it wasn't The baker really knows how to use the sweetness of the fruit to accentuate the dessert. I also LOVE their German christmas cookies they have during the holidays - it's a real treat. I've had a lot of different things from them, from brownies to lemon bars to cookies. It's all very good and fresh. They are at the farmers market every day. Despite the fact that the average Saturday morning at the farmer's market is a zoo, Annelore's keeps everything moving really quickly, while also managing to have time to explain their pastries for those of us who aren't familiar with the German pastry tradition. Also, their use of tablet-based credit card readers and automatic e-receipts is fantastically convenient when you've forgotten to get extra cash ahead of time and don't want to wait in line at the ATM. Logistics aside, every product bought from their stand has been delicious. Their chocolate raspberry tulips are rich and moist, without being overly sweet. They are a great option for when you want a cupcake that is a reasonable size and doesn't have a three inch mound of icing on top. Their chocolate pistachio shortbread is everything you could ask for when you are craving both buttery, crumbly cookie and chocolate ganache. This is a specialty bakery producing at a small scale, so you're going to see it in the price. These aren't Hostess snack cakes, so expect to see their small, individual pastries going for about $3 apiece. They bake great pastries with fantastic customer service, and are the perfect special treat on a sunny morning at the farmer's market. read more

I'm a tad confused concerning the negative reviews. Perhaps the reviewers had never lived in a large metro city before? If they had, they would know that European pastry is quite different from American pastry. First and foremost, the European pastry is made with some of the purest ingredients available, low in sugar and fat, and because no added chemicals are involved in any part of the process, the product has a very short shelf life. I personally loved every item I purchased earlier this week. Yes, the price is higher than dunking donuts, or other 'chain' restaurants, but they don't have corporate money behind them to survive. If you have a sophisticated pallet and truly enjoy European pastry and bread, this is the place you should run to - you will not be disappointed. read more

This is a high quality selection of baked goods. I will on a rare occasion pick something up if I have visitors (maybe). The prices for cookies and pastries are outrageous in my opinion. Over $3.00 for scone (sweet biscuit) - i think in actuality it was closer to $4.00. The scones are good - don't get me wrong but nothing to make it worth a $4.00 mark and I refuse to buy ever again. Even the smaller children's sugar cookies are off the charts. I want this to be a staple bakery when visiting the farmer's market but I can't imagine making such a purchase for each visit. I love German baked goods and have frequented far too many in Germany. They are delicious and special but I crave the feeling of routinely picking up a baked good without feeling buyers remorse... On a family trip to Raleigh NC were stumbling around to see the place and ended up at the NC State Farmers Market. I saw the pastry stand on the way in but decided to hit it on the way back around. Let me say, I know great pastry. The only other place in the US I've had pastry like this is in the French pavilion at Epcot in Florida. The pastry store in Epcot has two lines going out the door - no room to browse. They are that good - Annelore's is this good. Awesome, awesome pastry! It is a good thing I live in Atlanta or I would be gaining some pounds via pastry. I've even though of ordering and having my faves sent overnight via Fedex. Seriously, that good. I buy goodies from Annelore's often when I shop at the Farmers' Market, but I recently ordered a birthday cake from them. My girlfriend is gluten-intolerant, so they made a flourless three-chocolate cake that was the best flourless cake my girlfriend has ever eaten. Light, delicate, crunchy at the bottom but creamy on the inside ... just a treat. They are not the place if you want stuff written (I don't think they do that) but if you want damn good cake, these guys know what they are doing. In two words: overpriced ripoff...their baked goods are okay at best. When I wasn't paying attention, My 15 YO daughter bought a cookie that wasn't very good for $5.00!! The pretzel which was priced more inline with market standards ($5.00). However, after sitting in a basket on a table nxt to the counter, in the moist air for several hours, it was stale. That would have been fine if warmed up however, it was also bland. I have been to Germany and know what a good pretzel is, and have had plenty of good ones in US- and this was not high-level. I'm lucky enough to have my own german grandma to bake me kuchen when I visit, so I can say that this is without a doubt the best and most authentic kuchen I've ever had (Don't tell my grandma). It's not really as much of a dessert as a very hearty and fruity breakfast. Its sweet and the streusel on top is basically butter and sugar with a touch of flour to hold it together, but the base dough is more like sweet bread/challah, and the fruit isn't over done - its very straightforward fruit flavor. They have a great selection of German breads and pastries at the farmers market, but to get their cakes you need to visit the store. I brought a whole princeregent's cake and it was one of the best things I've ever eaten. Visit the bakery and try cake by the slice.
