First off we love a greasy spoon. Annie's is rated 4 1/2 stars and Tripadvisor but 3 1/2 stars on yelp. We decided to give it a try because the Tripadvisor reviews. Maybe it was a mistake? Open till three and we got there at 2:30. We told them we would order quickly and get out of their hair, but we appreciated the service. Ordered fish and chips and scallops and chips. Portion was unbelievably small of fish and way overcooked to the point. It was downright chewy and tough. It was beyond disappointing. Our waitress was nice and apologized and gave us a small credit. But at $15 a plate, I really did expect more.I expect that Cook was ticked off, but we hoped that ordering something made entirely in the fryer would've made his life a little bit easier. I've been hearing about this is the place to go for breakfast but with it being July 4th week we figured it would be too long of a wait. We went for lunch instead after doing the cliff walk and it was the perfect time to go! No wait and the food came out super fast. Our waitress was a no-funny-business kinda woman, straight to the point. I got the spinach salad with bacon mushrooms and onions and they put lobster salad on top, perfectly cooked with just a touch of mayo. Coleslaw was warm and wayyy to much mayo so skip that. But the salad was huge and very filling. Husband got the chicken Parm sandwich with sweet potato fries and they were amazing!!! Definitely get their sweet potato fries!! At the recommendation from The Boy's coworker, we were told Annie's is a must so we hit up this place as soon as breakfast hour rolled around. Service is incredibly friendly and I can see the appeal if you're nostalgic for that old time-y diner vibe. I opted for the banana nutella french toast topped with strawberry compote, a special for the day. I don't often choose sweet over savory for breakfast, but it just what I needed to start the day; they don't skimp on the fresh fruit which is nice. I actually wavered between two stars and three and this is why. They were friendly but we had to ask for a refill of coffee. Also, the burger didn't come with bacon which it was supposed to so we had to ask for that and then wait for it to be prepared. I ordered the crab cake bennie and while the egg was poached perfectly and the hollandaise was tasty, the english muffin or the crab was burned and I kept getting a funny burned taste in my mouth. Also my potatoes were raw so I didn't even attempt to continue eating them. Yes, the prices are reasonable but I think there might be a reason there is no line here on weekends. Perfect timing...we got a booth immediately upon arriving for breakfast. After that, we sat and watched as others waited... Our server was really great and super friendly. It's a massive personal fail to eat at the same restaurant in a new city twice, but we ended up doing just that at Annie's (scheduling mistake) and I'M NOT EVEN MAD ABOUT IT. Day 1, we had breakfast. Classic comfort diner food in an elevated environment. The corned beef hash was luscious and meaty and everything I wanted it to be. The pancakes were unreal. Day 2, I had the club sandwich and holy noms... it's real roast turkey (the thick cut stuff), delish bacon, the perfect amount of mayo. And they toast every single piece of bread, even the one in the middle. It's a must-order, on classic white bread of course. And did I mention, we never spent more than $30 for two of us??? Strategically located next to the Audrain Collection this is a solid solid spot for brunch and breakfast. It's a long-ish walk but if you want to walk off what you're about to put in its doable from The Chanler at Cliff Walk hotel. I got the lobster eggs and they were nice enough to hard poach because I was preggers at the time. Hubby got typical breakfast platter. The servers are very nice and personable. There were a couple of families with young kids and both servers kept up hilarious repartees with both kiddos. Coffee is decent and ever flowing. Place feels homey. I believe it's cash only! A couple friends and I went here on our road trip to Newport. This was a last minute decision and we were extremely happy with it in the end. We were seated within 30 minutes, there were at least 4 parties ahead of us, but the staff worked efficiently to get everyone in. The food was amazing! We did the crows nest Benny and the crab cakes Benny and both were honestly amazing. From the hollandaise sauce, to the perfect poached eggs, to the crab cake/corned beef hash. It was scrumptious and one of the best eggs Benedict I've ever had. I wasn't a big fan of the homefries, as I prefer hashbrowns but I barely ate them since the eggs Benny had me so full. My Annie's Benedict was awful-the canadian bacon was overcooked so that it has no moisture left was hard to cut and impossible to chew, the english muffin was so overdone I had a hard time cutting it and the homefries were flavorless, we had to request to get the a little more coffee but I am not sure why we bothered because it was watery and flavorless. I've been to Annie's a few times over the years and the best part is it's " breakfast all day" feature! This December though what brought me to visit was the fabulous holiday ceiling display ! It must have taken forever to attach these Christmas ornaments on ribbon to the ceiling for the effect was wonderful and would put anyone in the Christmas spirit! We drove 1.5 hours in the middle of holiday prep to visit Annie's! We enjoyed the pancakes and bacon and a western omelet while taking in the holiday vibe. It was almost closing time and only a few tables were occupied, but our waitress was pleasant and our meals were served quickly and were tasty. The restaurant is long and narrow, with no room to even queue up at the register. In fact, they have to keep the condiments on small wall shelves because there isn't room on the tables! Space is definitely tight, and it doesn't feel pristinely clean. The toilet is literally a little water closet next to the ATM. If it was a little cleaner and a little less tight for my big behind to wiggle around, I'd have liked it better. 3 Stars. As a previous reviewer mentioned, the ATM literally spits cash, so have your hand ready to catch so your bills don't hit the floor! If you're looking for a brunch spot in Newport you know how the general landscape is going to play out - a bunch of overpriced restaurants offering "their take" on a breakfast classic. Annie's is the perfect anti Newport establishment with its traditional menu and homey, small town diner feel. The walls are lined with old photographs and news articles, and there's a beautiful bar towards the back of the restaurant that peaks into the kitchen. While they do have some fun "twist" items (I had the crab cake eggs benedict - my favorite AND must have every time I see it) their bread and butter is literally bread and butter.
