Likely driven past a hundred times, yet had not been in until today when coworker met for quick meal. With slight lunch rush there was a bit of a hustle and bustle vibe going on, but service was friendly and swift. Whether you want to sit at the bar, table for two, four or more, this is a great little diner to enjoy a breakfast or lunch meal. Placed order, being it was raining felt like a soup day for me and boy it was tasty!! Coworker swears no bad food to be had here and will be back to sample some of the rest of the menu items along with the amazing service! The service was top notch. For a small dining room there was enough staff to keep things moving. I ate at around 10:30 on a Sunday morning and it was starting to slow down. When I arrived it was a wait out the door. I'd say anytime after 11:00 on Sunday is better than arriving before that. I hadn't been here since the place used to be Cindy's Country Cafe (which I brought all visiting friends and family to for brunch). This meal was fine, food was fine. We recently moved to the area and decided to give Jax Diner a try--what a great find! The coffee came out strong and bold, just how I like it. My favorite dish had to be the omelet--perfectly cooked and packed with flavor. The French toast was spot-on, golden on the outside and soft on the inside. I'd recommend ordering the sausage gravy on the side; it's a little greasy, but the flavor is absolutely worth it. The potatoes were another highlight--crispy and seasoned just right. The diner itself isn't huge, but that adds to the cozy, welcoming feel. The staff couldn't have been friendlier, which really sealed the deal for us. read more

You may know this from earlier reviews, but in case not, I'm on a search for the world's best biscuits and gravy. Until yesterday morning, the holder of that title was 3 Monkeys in Richmond, Virginia. That title changed hands at the bar at Jax Diner yesterday in Middletown, RI. The man running the food, I think his name is John (my apologies if memory fails me!), is a force, in both a physical and epicurean sense. He towers o er the grill with a presence and makes the best sausage gravy I have ever tasted, and that is saying something. I practically ignored everything else on that considerable plate of food because I didn't dare leave a scrap of the biscuit and gravy! It's that good. Title worthy good. It's made to order too - yup, you heard that right. When I sat down and told the server that this was my first time there, the local guy to my left chuckled and said, without looking up from his plate, "it won't be his last." When our eyes met, I saw the truth with no words exchanged, that I had found my way accidentally into the club of Jax believers, those who truly understood what makes it great there. Drove all the way here because there were no special labor day hours on their website, instagram, or phone voicemail (tried to call a couple times) just to find a piece of paper taped to their door saying closed....Disappointing! read more

Stopped here on way home from Newport, RI for breakfast. AWESOME! The menu has so many great choices. Small, local diner that was absolutely a good call for food. The owner, Michael and his staff are so in tune with prepping, cooking and serving a delicious breakfast. I had a great talk with his mom who happened to be there. Another reason I stopped; my dog is named Jax! So needless to say it was a great experience all around. Watched my kid play a youth sports game down the street and after I searched local breakfast this place popped up. When I pulled up I saw a trailer and thought what was I thinking. I walked in and saw it was a restaurant style diner which was pretty cool looking. The kitchen right in front of the bar so you can see everything being cooked. I ordered a breakfast sandwich and hash brown due to the time I had available. I wasn't expecting much but boy was I surprised. The everything bagel was so flavorful it was amazing. The hash browns had a perfect hint of seasoning. My kid had hand battered fresh chicken tenders. The fires were hand cut. A standard, run of the mill diner. Service was friendly, seating area was spacious, and they have stools at the counter if you're eating alone. This is an absolute GEM! We were a party of two and were a little worried about finding a quick table since this place is so tiny when we stopped in for a Sunday breakfast. We were seated immediately! This is a place for small groups (2s and 3s), anything larger might expect a bit of a wait. They do have some outdoor seating for the summer. We got the Eagles Nest (eggs Benedict with corned beef hash), the Workin' Man (eggs, biscuits, and sausage gravy), and split a pancake. I have been dreaming about these sausage and biscuits since I ate them because they were so buttery and amazing. Cannot recommend highly enough! We ordered a plain pancake but the kitchen accidentally made their special pumpkin. They were going to remake it for us but we said we were happy to have that one. It was packed with spices and very tasty. The servers were all lovely and welcoming. I absolutely LOVED this place. We live across the state but we will make the trip to be back, it's worth it! read more

Have visited twice now - once to dine in and another to get takeout. The food is very good! Excellent diner food. Their pancakes are PHENOMENAL. The portions of meat are generous and the bagels are good quality. I didn't love their iced tea (too bitter for my taste) or their home fries (plain fried potatoes, no seasonings). It's a bit more expensive than other places. The restaurant is small and appears to only accommodate one larger party at a time. Service was very friendly both visits! read more

Walking in to this small cozy place, we were greeted promptly and everyone was super friendly and kind! Our server was so sweet! The menu looked really great- some very creative options and something for most. I ordered the garden omelet with egg white- to be honest, I was a little disappointed- it was overwhelmed with vegetables and hardly any egg white. The potatoes were really good. My son was really happy with his fluffernutter French toast- he even shared a bite with me- it was definitely nostalgic from the peanut butter and fluff sandwiches we had growing up! What a great little spot, they serve breakfast and lunch. Breakfast is served all day, which I love. I had "The big rig" with my eggs over medium. The eggs came out over easy?, But I ate them anyways, they were good, just not cooked how I had requested. The "Home fries" hit the spot, the French toast was on point and I gotta say they did pretty darn good with their homemade sausage patties. Our server was friendly and attentive. The only downside is the place is tiny. Great addition to the limited Portsmouth dining scene! We had visited the predecessor a few years and although decent food and service, the place was in bad shape. Wind blowing in the windows, etc. Never returned. First visit the other AM. Remodeled and pleasant space, great staff, and a HUGE breakfast and lunch menu. We all had different breakfast combos and all were winners. Will be back to see how they do at lunch. Lots of parking. I expect this place will be visit especially on the weekends. read more

First time for us since Jax opened. The owners did a nice job of refurbishing the restaurant while retaining the diner ambiance. We were greeted upon arriving and chose our table across from the cooking area. The menu is extensive; something for everyone. We started with coffee (in real mugs). I ordered the The Cowboy Bennie (homemade sausage patties atop buttermilk biscuit, with poached egg and hollandaise. The poached egg was a true poached, not half way soft boiled. The hollandaise was creamy and tasty. Hubs had The Yee Haw (omelette with ham, pepper,onion but no cheese at his request!). Both served with home fries which were crispy and nicely seasoned. Portions were plentiful. Service was attentive and friendly. There were quite a few customers enjoying the food. Glad to see the diner reopened in this new incarnation! read more

This is our second time coming to the newly rebranded diner near our house. It's difficult sometimes to stand out from some of the other breakfast places around town. Service here is great, staff is very attentive. The restaurant can be a little noisy at times, which when you're just waking up can be a lot to handle! The restaurant must've had some feedback, because their potatoes used to be underwhelming, but this second trip they are light and crispy and certainly above average. We came here during the week for a late breakfast and the day we came there was no AC, but they had plenty of fans to keep the place cool. The place was empty, which was great because we were able to sit right away. We ordered the chicken and waffles along with the big rig which came with French toast, eggs, sausage(I went with the sausage) or bacon, and home fries. The chicken was great and had a nice little kick to it with the spicy maple syrup and the waffle was also light and fluffy. The French toast was also sweet even without syrup on it and was light and fluffy as well. Not a big fan of the homemade sausage because it tasted more like a hamburger.
