The Newport Marriott has always been one of my favorite places to stay, and one of the highlights is breakfast at MainSail. As a Platinum Marriott Bonvoy member, I receive complimentary breakfast, which makes the $32 buffet price feel like an added luxury rather than a splurge--but even if it's not included in your stay, the experience justifies the cost. The buffet covers all the essentials--eggs, bacon, sausage, fresh fruit, pastries, breads--but also goes above and beyond with made-to-order omelets, waffles, and a rotating selection of specialty pancakes or French toast. It's the kind of breakfast that you actually look forward to, and we made a point to start every morning of our stay here. Service on this visit was excellent--friendly and attentive from the moment we walked in. That's not always been the case during peak summer visits when the restaurant gets busier, so it was nice to enjoy the more relaxed off-season vibe without sacrificing quality. And of course, the setting is a bonus. With floor-to-ceiling windows overlooking Newport Harbor and the Newport Yacht Club, the views from MainSail are beautiful and add to the peaceful, coastal charm of the experience. Hotel restaurants are always a little risky. They sometimes have a captive audience and don't try as hard as they should. Mainsail is NOT one of those restaurants. People come from off the street (and off the docks) to dine here. We had breakfast. Seated next to the expansive window wall we had an awesome view. Our server was polite and super attentive. Coffee was brought fresh to the table and a carafe was left behind, nice touch. Avocado toast looked amazing. The yogurt parfait did too. My wife complimented both dishes. We came here for Breakfast 2x while staying at the hotel. Decent but not great food. I asked for a cheesy omelette but it was pretty dry. Service was just ok- pretty slow but friendly. Casual, well lit ambiance with a lot of seating. Menu was pretty basic. read more

Even as hotel restaurants go, this is very average. I had a Greek yogurt parfait with fruit that was god but service was really slow despite the restaurant not being very crowded. Great ambiance on a warm sunny day though- you can look out on the harbor and even sit outside on the deck. Bar next door also has a nice beer and drink selection so that's a plus. read more

The restaurant located at the Marriott in Newport has stunning views of the harbor. We had a reservation and the dining room was not busy. Waited 10 minutes for our table which was reasonable if they were busy but it was perfectly fine. The food was very good but for the price we expected better service. Another table left after not being acknowledged for 25 minutes. Our waitress/waiter never checked on us after we received our food. We needed refills but never got them. Dessert was not offered and I had to track them down for our check. They need busers to refill waters and clear plates so the waitstaff can focus on customer service read more

What made my experience even better was the excellent service provided by Marie. She's an awesome lady who goes above and beyond to make sure you have everything you need to enjoy your breakfast. The Newport Marriott is a really pretty hotel right on the marina. We were there for a company Christmas party and stayed the night. The weather was rainy and we were looking for breakfast without having to go far the next morning. The MainSail was the perfect option. The restaurant is open and airy. They have a buffet option but also have al la crate options as well. My husband got the homemade hash and eggs. The poached eggs were over cooked and barely runny but everything else was delicious. I had the croque Madame. It was gigantic. I ate about 1/3 of it and was stuffed. It was served with a very soggy salad that had about 1/4 red onion in it. The croque madame was delicious. Our waitress was great - attentive but not overbearing. I can't say I'd come back for no reason but if I was staying at the Marriott again - I wouldn't hesitate to come back. I'd be particularly interested in trying the brunch buffet. read more

We discovered MainSail after getting off the boat from the Newport Jazz Fest. MainSail is located in the Newport Marriott. The drink and food prices are not over the top for a hotel. Stephanie was our server. We ordered a Cabernet and some beers. Food- Clam chowder, Chicken Tacos and Mussels- Good quality! The outside views of the yachts moving through waters are mesmerizing at sunset! Overall service was good and prompt. Definitely recommend Mainsail for drinks and food. We had $30 credit to spend at the Marriott so we decided to eat breakfast here, since our baby woke up so early. Wow, I was so impressed! Definitely way better than many other hotel breakfasts. The staff was so nice to us too! Loved the avocado toast and their home fries were great. read more

Came here for our Thanksgiving lunch. The view was great. We sat right by the window and could oversee the entire harbor. For the food, the crab cakes were more like a croquette but that's OK. They were delicious. The main I got was the swordfish which might have been slightly undercooked. Nothing terrible though, and the veggies around it were fantastic. My wife got the turkey dinner, and the amount of food was wild. She had at least double my quantity! She got the apple pie dessert, which she raved about. Even though pie a la mode is nice, not really great for cold weather. I got the pumpkin pie latte tiramisu. It was delicious! The service was decent, but the place was practically empty. The price was a little high for what we got considering no drinks were included at all. read more

Visited 07/24/2021 Staying at the Marriott for a couple of days we just came down for our 'comped' breakfasts. First day we had the buffet, but that wasn't available on the weekend due to the dreaded covid. The second day I noticed this pretty amazing French toast dish passing by as we walked in. Now I'm not a big "French toast" guy, but this dish looked pretty amazing. Reading the menu it said it was stuffed pina colada French toast and since I love Pina coladas, I figured I just had to try it. WOW! This was by far the best French toast I've ever had. Stuffed with a creamy 'Pina colada mixture of pineapple and coconut... and a huge scoop if whipped cream. Good Grief! I can't believe I ate the whole thing! I also didn't eat anything for the next 24 hours. But it was well worth it. Back in NJ I get sudden urges to take the 3-4 hour ride to order that again. If you see it on the menu... don't hesitate! Oh and yes... Samantha is an awesome waitress. read more

The service here was just amazing! Came here for our anniversary night on a Saturday night. They're practicing social distancing while making others wear a mask to come in. You can take off your mask once you're at the table. The manager (didn't get his name) was amazing. Very hospitable... and just awesome. Our server Samantha was such a sweetheart. The only reason to eat at mainsail is convenience. It's located in the lobby of the Newport Marriot. We had the breakfast buffet for $20 per person. Standard omelet station, waffles made to order, and a buffet of cereal, granola, fruit (good selection of berries, melon, grapefruit, pineapple), yogurt, assorted breads and muffins and a hot station of scrambled eggs, bacon, sausage, and hash browns. Coffee, tea and juice are included but not self serviced. Food is average, service is great. But one morning is enough. We all decided to eat in town the next day. That says it all. read more

Beautiful view, terrible service. Nine of us tourists for a lunch sitting. Hostess was very nice and asked us to wait while she set up a table. Manager come by and says dinning room is full you'll need to move to the bar. Hostess end up seating us and waitress takes our order. Bring the alcohol beverages but not the sodas. After about 25 min. another waitress drops our food off at an empty table behind us. We wait 5-10 min and decide if it's not our food we will eat it anyway. Hostess see this and begins to help and advises her manager. Manager then proceeds to offer and apology and 25% off the check & states the waitress is overwhelmed. Bottom Line: A convenient and good-enough option for Marriott hotel guests. If you're walking around the Newport wharves there are definitely sexier places to dine but for a convenient meal while staying at the Marriott Main Sail is a-ok. The restaurant has a nice décor, good views and a decent menu. I think their busiest time is weekend breakfast/brunch. For breakfast/brunch you can order off of the menu or get the buffet. There are two levels of buffet - one that is about $12 and includes cereal, pastries and fruit and a $20 option that includes made to order waffles and omelets. I don't each that much at breakfast so $20 is a steep price to pay when I really just want some of an omelets and a few bites of fruit but it seemed like the best way to go here. Even though I did go with the buffet option, the waitress was very attentive and was glad to bring me a to-go cup for my coffee. read more

Beautiful view of Newport harbor. This is the second time I went back. My server was a pleasant bartender who waited on me in outside patio area. When I ordered the hamburger (med-rare) I told her last time it came out well-done. She promised she'd make sure it was med-rare. Came out med-well. I don't blame her though. I guess it's a kitchen issue. The post below is from the 1st time I went here. I ordered the hamburger and asked for medium-rare. After waiting 20 minutes, my burger came out well-done. Very disappointing. Although they immediately took it back, I had to wait another 15 minutes for my food. This happened while only a handful of customers were there. I went to Newport with my twin sister and mom to have a local kinda low key birthday. Initially we went over to the Brick Alley Pub for dinner but they had a 30 minute wait and we were doing a ghost tour at 8. The tour meeting place was right outside the restaurant at the Marriott so we figured we'd try there instead. We walked in and was greeted by the most delightful worker named Pat. She was a gem throughout our whole meal. We told her we were going on the walking tour and she filled us in about it and informed us that she wouldn't let the tour leave without us and we'd be served right away. She was correct. The service was speedy, the food was absolutely delicious and the atmosphere was pleasant. Pat and our waitress did a fantastic job taking care of us on our visit. I would highly recommend the restaurant to all and I can't stress enough that the Marriott should be so pleased they have such a genuinely kind person like Pat as an employee. I can't say enough good things about this experience and plan to call the hotel and let them know how great it was. read more

A really beautiful spot overlooking the harbor and a wonderful morning treat for breakfast especially ending a weekend of fun/sight-seeing in Newport! The breakfast is a bit on the high side. It seemed the average prices ranged 15.00 - 20.00 (breakfast brunch is 20.00 per person) but the portions were nice and the service was courteous and attentive. We had dinner Saturday night at the mainsail, four of us. We ordered the steak, short ribs and lobster. All was excellent. The steak was cooked perfect and we were just surprised how good it was for the price we paid. Lobster and short ribs were also good. We also ordered salads and they were good to. Next day we went for breakfast and ordered the buffet. We did not like it. We would definitely go back for dinner but stay away for breakfast. read more

Hubby and I had dinner at Main Sail at the Newport Marriott this weekend along with our stay. Normally we avoid hotel bars but it was raining. We were pleasantly surprised by the fantastic food. Hubby had half dozen little neck clams as an appetizer (little small but it is December) and he said they were really good. I ordered the fried calamari with banana peppers and butter and sauce. To say they were yummy was an understatement. The tomato sauce was so good we asked for seconds and I wanted a spoon to eat it all. For entrees we had chicken rice bowl which was very good and I had brown rice so that was a healthy option. Hubby had the fish and chips. Fresh fish tenderloin pieces cut into finger size pieces. He says it was a 9 of 10. The fries are house cut and double fried. They were my crack!! Staff were laid back and friendly which was great for a rainy Friday night. Thoroughly disappointing. Was going to go with two stars, but the straw that broke the camel's back was the server not returning all of our change when we paid with cash. Situation: Mother's Day brunch, photo of menu attached. Quality would have been adequate for $29, but $49 was a scam. The waffles were all premade, cold, and hard as rocks (waffles at a Best Western continental breakfast are far superior). When my wife said something to one of the staff about this, they shrugged and went "those are the waffles," and walked away. The pancakes and French toast were also cold with sauces dumped on them congealing in a chafing dish. The omelette station, in fairness, was quite good, as was half of the carving station, where the sous chef Vince was very professional and friendly. Ham was regrettably very dry but the strip steak was the highlight of the meal and tasted quite good. It had a bourbon caramelized onion jam and a stoneground mustard to go with it. Desert bar was...meh. Tasted good but everything was straight out of the freezer. Overall, I'm upset because I wish I could have treated my wife better on Mother's Day. read more

So, I don't usually write reviews about anything, but I had planned to have a great Mother's Day for my wife and my 86 year old mother in law. Two weeks ago I made dinner reservations at the Newport Marriott on the harbor. Beautiful building with great finishes and views. Food was highly rated. As it turned out, the best part of our visit was our treatment by the very professional parking valet attendants. I had 1:30pm reservations. We were seated in a breakfast area. When I said we had come for dinner, we were told we'd have to move to another dinning area. Grabbed the wheel chair and mother in law and walked as directed. There was know-one at the eatery station. A bar tender noticed us and came over. He told us there was no room for us and said we could get dinner back where we had just moved from. Back we went. Same waitress changed our menus from breakfast to dinner and took our orders. Food was so so and we got out of there. I tipped the valet well. You want a top shelf day or stay, go to the Chatham Bars Inn on the Cape. Those folks know what their doing. read more

Very good for a hotel restaurant. The burgers and fries are excellent. The turkey club is made from fresh carved turkey. The wait staff is friendly and the atmosphere is nice since the goal make-over of the hotel. There is a 20% cost savings for RI residents...nicely covers the tip. read more

Normally, I am not a huge fan of Hotel restaurant brunch / buffets. I like my bacon crisp and dry and most bacon found in Buffet lines is floppy and greasy; the eggs are either dried out or too runny - not the case here. Every single piece of bacon I had was crisp and dry and the scrambled eggs were perfect. They had fresh raspberries & blueberries as well as other fruit, muffins, pancakes, fresh belgian waffles, an omlet station and a huge array of other yummy food! We had a nice table with a view of the sailboats in the harbor. Susan waited on us, and we were well taken careof, and she gave us great tips of what to do and see in Newport, just had an overall nice time chatting with her!! We will be headed there for breakfast tomorrow as well! read more

We ate there for the convenience as we were staying next door. Mistake. Although it was certainly dinner hour, there was only one other couple dinning. Service was fine. How could it not be? First, a bug crawled out of my salad. They offered to replace the salad but I had lost my desire for it. I ordered salmon. It was dry and average at best. I asked for some kind of sauce to make it more palatable. We have eaten there in previous years and haven't found it to be so bad. Different chef??? read more

Mothers Day Brunch! What a joke! Brunch consist of breakfast and lunch items. Well having roasted potatoes and a lobster muffin is not "lunch". Breakfast area was unorganized and the selection was minimal. The desserts were dry and flavorless. I would never go ever again. read more

One of the worst experiences I have ever had in a restaurant. Of the seven of us, three had to send our steaks back because they were not done to order. No one ever came back to fill our water glasses. Sam the waiter was great but over his head because they did not have enough staff. At the bar in the main foyer they did not stock scotch. At the Skiff bar they charged $16 for a scotch Manhattan. Other guests did not like their meals either. We were told the chef does not like his job. Enough said. Stay far away. read more

Well first off, we arrived and the reservation we put in a month ago, and got confirmed once more yesterday, had mysteriously disappeared. The hostess were very rude telling us we never made the reservation, even though we had the confirmation voicemail was in our hands. The MainSail hosted our wedding's rehearsal dinner, and we had a great meal! The restaurant is beautifully decorated with a modern and tasteful nautical theme with a gorgeous view of the harbor. Davon and his staff were super attentive and friendly, and the food selection was very tasty (we had the NY strip steak, chicken breast, and lobster pappardelle). It was a great deal for Newport, and I'd highly recommend it for either a nice evening out or a cool setting for a large dinner. read more
