There are very few Ukrainian products in California. My family and I miss some of the dishes. While in Chicago, I found a wonderful store in the Ukrainian Village. My trip turned into a gastronomic tour. Pastries, bread, cakes and pies. Sour cream cake with cherries, cheesecake, dumplings, stuffed cabbage rolls, sausages, meat. Everything was fresh, freshly prepared, and most importantly, delicious, just like at home. The staff was wonderful, they greeted me with a smile and answered all my questions. Ann's Bakery & Deli is a great place for Eastern European goods. If you're looking for authentic items you can find many here. Located in Ukrainian Village, so it caters mostly to the local residents. Has fresh baked doughnuts and a big selection in the deli section if you're looking for meats. There's also lots of candy, a ton. Get all kinds of authentic items from canned to fresh. It has a lot of European beers and liquors. There's more than just vodka. Check out the deli section where there's freshly made food. They have everything from borscht to packzi. A lot of canned items. Usually these have ingredients also listed in English but not always so know what you're getting before so you don't get something that's wrong. Mostly good prices and lots of good deals. They also have a huge amount of candy, and people like the cheesecake that gets baked fresh. Has a lot more than a typical bakery and deli. It can unfortunately have quite a few expired items so check dates on everything. The prices are good for most things. read more

Part of me also wanted to support this bakery that I have spotted while driving along Chicago Ave off-and-on. Ann's Bakery & Deli does have a small space for parking, but I would not count on getting one of those spots. To my luck, I found an open spot along N Leavitt St & W Rice St within the neighborhood. I really adored the interaction I had with an older woman as I opened the door. At the time, she was leaving as I walked in, so I opened the door for her because her hands were full. She thanked me, and we ended up conversing about how looking at bakery & deli items can turn into purchasing extra things as she walked out. One priority I have is to make sure I wish those I converse with a great day before we part ways because you never know the impact it will have. It is the least I can do in this world where everyone tends to live in a bubble. The atmosphere is very relaxed at this bakery & deli which gives off a neighborhood corner store vibe. I must share that along with the items shelved being organized, the market was clean, but the aisles on the other hand had tight maneuvering space in-between. Ann's Bakery & Deli is a reason why I love a culturally diverse city like Chicago. While shopping, I took a liking to the variety of the Eastern European items specifically the variation of LOVARE tea flavors, the fresh produce, and of course the cakes in the bakery (cheesecake peach, cheesecake raspberry, bolero cake, and drank cherry cake). Yum! In spite of not having much interaction with the clerk behind the register, I never once felt unwelcome at any time while shopping here. I read bunch of "unfriendly" to foreigners reviews! I am Russian/ Ukrainian and came in with my Venezuela finance, we spoke Spanish entire time and every staff member treated us well. This place is adorable. They have a really wide selection of stuff too! I find it's a good replacement for Mariano's on most things, and the fact that they source much of their stuff from Europe, you get to skip the garbage ingredients on pre-packaged foods when buying from here. I find their vegetables to be very fresh, and their bread is delicious. They speak mainly Ukranian here so I'm quite intimidated to order from the meat counter, bakery counter, or smoked fish counter but it looks really good. The first time I went here when I checked out I told the gentleman it was my first time shopping there and I was new to the neighborhood and he gave me a warm welcome with free blueberries! I love finding European pastries, sausages, chocolates etc here. But the Ukrainian and Polish women who work here need to learn manners. They treat any customer that doesn't speak their language, condescendingly and angrily. It's not the customer's fault that you don't speak English and you have no desire to learn, or to provide customer service. I committed the crime of placing all my pastries in the same bag- the cashier girl angrily kept shoving another bag at me, gesturing with her head. I asked what she needed me to do; she couldn't speak English so she called another woman who also couldn't speak English. Fyi: in America we are nice to customers. read more

Farther down, the deli and the cold-cut meats await the eyes of someone looking for a taste of home or hoping to replicate momychka's signature dishes. As you meander deeper into the store, you encounter whole smoked fish that may deter some Americans, but if you were to pair it with the Kvass you grabbed when you took less than 5 steps into the store; your taste buds will travel over 5,000 miles away to Ukraine. Don't let the bakery and deli take up all of your expenses, save some cash for the imported candies that would make Willy Wonka's Chocolate Factory selection seem more boring than vanilla ice cream. The customer service is exceptional. If you have kids they will be greeted with welcoming smiles, playfulness, and for the best behaved , candy. Wow, I as just verbally assaulted by the cashier guy/manager for basically putting my card in too early, in their antiquated debit system. He pulled down his mask to further verbally assault me when I said that he was being belligerent and I need him to stop yelling. Oh the grave sin of the customer putting in card to early. And this escalated . He said he didn't give a crap and kept being belligerent and trying to shout over me. This guy is out of control with rage and needs to get a hold of himself. Mind you I have been a customer of Ann's for decades. This is totally unacceptable. Maybe he thinks he is still operating like people used to in communist block with condescending rudeness and bullying. I will make sure to let my friends know not to support a business that verbally assaults women. He should pick someone his size to bully. They don't always smile but that's a leftover from Soviet days. Their deli counter, hot food bar, and bakery are second to none. The prices are reasonable. I shop with them frequently. The service and the products are the worst I've ever experienced in any places in US. I ordered Napoleon cake for my birthday and as soon as I cut it, I smelled an awful smell of old margarine, the cake was absolutely dry and smelled like it was so old. They definitely don't know the recipe of normal Napoleon. But that wasn't it. When we called to the store to complain with the cake, the owner was so rude with us, and told us that "nobody complained with the cakes before" and "if you don't like it it's your problem". Rich's is my go-to store for East European delicacies in the neighborhood but Ann's runs a close second. I like the prepared food selection better here. There's more choices and everything seems to be ultra fresh. And then there's the breads - fresh and reasonably priced. I recently stopped in here around Orthodox Easter and they had ample piles of baked goods I haven't seen before such as a delicious sweet quiche type pastry. Both stores have a good stock of Eat European staples. But Rich's wins marginally because they have alcohol. read more

Ann's Bakery is one of my favorite grocery store in the Chicago area! They offer a huge selection of meats, cheeses, and baked goods. They also sell lots of produce, so you can do a pretty full shop there even if you don't just want to cook Eastern European food during the week. The staff is really friendly and help me figure out what's what. Great place, I don't know what those other people with negative reveiws are talking about. Everyone had a mask on when I walking in here and everyone was amazing and helpful. There's the fresh and tasty meals ready for to go! Lots of good ethnic food reasonably priced. Easy to get to. Loaded up on polish rye bread, sauerkraut, beet juice and pickles. Yum Definitely will be back and I recommend Anna's Bakery to everyone. But I can't give the 5 stars, because the staff members do not speak while English, which is totally cool to me. You are going into a European store, customers that do not speak the language should respect that and get offend for it. Wonderful bakery in Ukrainian village. I'm always sure to stop in whenever I'm in town to buy my vodka filled candies and to get some of my favorite cookies to snack on as well. They ask for id if making a card purchase, so have it out and at the ready. Beautiful gift bags for sale also, and I've never had a problem here with expiration dates. read more

I stopped into Ann's to try it out and buy a cake for a birthday.The shop looks interesting, with lots of Polish delicacies and they were doing a healthy lunch business at their 'hot food" counter. I picked out a very pretty Tiramisu cake, surrounded by a pink ribbon - a nice presentation, at an even friendlier price point! However, it was down hill when it was time to serve the cake. It was old, stale and flavorless, and lacking in filling. It is not often a cake gets pitched into the garbage around her, but this had no redeeming qualities. The rest of the shop looks well kept, and has interesting imports...but if this is an indication of their baked goods-- steer clear! read more

The first time I was in Russia it was before "the change." It was not unusual to see dozens or hundreds of people in line at food stores, even though they knew that probably there would be no inventory. Outside of each subway station there were long lines of people selling 'silly' things: one shoe, two inches of vodka in a bottle, a couple of pencils. People were hungry and would overlook conventional norms for food safety and ingredients. And such was the feeling I got at Ann's Bakery and Deli in Ukraine Village in Chicago.If you don't speak Russian, I wouldn't recommend stopping in, you'll be treated like a 2nd class citizen by both the help and the other customers. The Russian shoppers are just plain rude, the help, not only rude, but unhelpful to non-Russian speakers. Why I felt the resemblance between the bakery goods and pre-change Russia? A lot of the food on the shelves is past the expiration date, but it doesn't stop the locals from grabbing it up like theY just got the deal of the century on caviar. Bakery goods are mismarked for prices and the shelf order is nothing short of chaos - with different goods all mixed up so you wouldn't be able to tell the price in any case. As many other customers have opined, I got home to find 1) not only were many of the baked goods stale (odd, as it was the day before Easter and one would expect a bakery to be chock-a-block full of fresh goods), and 2) the hustle of the cash register and treatment by both customers and help alike, made me miss the fact I was drastically overcharged for some items. If you regularly read my reviews, you know that I endeavor to find something redeeming out of every visit. Not so here. Pass on Ann's Bakery, even for the curiosity factor. But I don't want to discourage anybody from visiting Ukrainian Village; the cathedrals are magnificent and there are authentic Russian restaurants and culture to absorb. read more

It's old and it tasted like old butter spread/margarine. So disappointed!!!! Don't ruin Ukrainian cuisine impression with this failure. I think my fiance would murder me if I didn't give this place 5 stars. He's from Romania and I think Ann's takes him back to Bucharest. He loves the bakery items, the fruits (mainly the gooseberries), and the fruit tea selection. I always get pickles (so good!) and some random cheese I've never heard of. Manager was rude, when I called next day to let them know that I had food poison after buying food in their store and most of products where expired, she didn't apologize, she was acting like she is back in Ukraine, acted like it was my fault! Will never go to this store again!!!! I live far away from Ukrainian village , the only reason I went to the store because my baby had doctor visit.
