THE BEST CHESTNUTS EVER! Pre pandemic there used to be the sweetest lady that would sell chestnuts on the weekend in Richmond, but sadly she does not do that anymore. Devasting. Luckily, one day we decided to visit Mitsuwa marketplace and lo and behold, the chestnuts are right outside! And they are fresh too! You can literally see, smell, and hear the chestnuts being roasted. So amazing! We literally drive all the way to San Jose just to get chestnuts every weekend lol. We also each get a pound lol. The two people running the stand are very kind and they accept Apple Pay, cash, and credit card. The best!!

They are located right in front of the Mitsuwa market. If you're there on the weekend, you can't miss it because of the long line. They are open on weekends only and they accept card and cash. I was curious about how these tasted because the line was ridic, but I stood in line anyway. It didn't take that long to get to the front. Maybe like 8 mins? Rated them a 3 because it's a lot of work to open chestnuts. Luckily it came with a chestnut cracker. When you taste it, it's sweet. It tastes like a big peanut. The taste was good. Not bad, not great. Would I get it again? I don't think so but I'm glad I tried it at least.

I've been eating these since I was a kid! They're honestly one of my favorite snacks and brings me back to my childhood :) It's quite pricey these days at $15/lb. But I put up with the price since you can't find anything like it around these parts. They give you a serrated plastic tool that you use to puncture into a flatter part of the chestnut. Then you squeeze the sides until it cracks open. The annoying part about it is that it sometimes falls apart and crumbles, or when the skin sticks to the chestnut and you spend minutes trying to peel it away. Sometimes you get a strange-tasting chestnut that isn't as fresh or it's slightly over roasted, but most of the batch tends to be really good. Other than these frustrations, I end up coming back to this stand since I don't visit Strawberry Park Shopping Center that often.

It is one of the best places that I like to visit. The owners are wonderful and nice. The roasted chestnuts are really good. I always wait for them at the end of the week. I wish them success

Peeling chestnuts, not for me.

This is probably one of my most regrettable purchases of the year. When I think of chestnuts I think of Japanese festivals with freshly roasted warm chestnuts. The actual experience that I got was quite different. I got a bag of lukewarm chestnuts. Back in Japan and other parts of Asia, I'd get chestnuts that come cracked. I pulled all the stops, took out my cutting bird, knives and even the tool they provided. It was time consuming, tedious and frustrating. Instead of a warm and festive experience with gooey roasted chestnuts, I got about half an hours worth of frustration. Never again.

What can I say? Warm chestnuts on a cold day. Perfect. Ask the woman working there to show you how to open it with the little plastic tool they drop in the bag and you'll open them like a pro in no time.

Super yummy chestnuts! But... I question the honesty of one of their employees. Last week, I asked for a pound. It's twelve dollars a pound. He asked me if $15 was ok because he put too much in the bag. I said no, that I didn't have $15. He took a few chestnuts out. This week, same thing. Is $15 ok because he overfilled the bag. I said I only wanted one pound for $12. He dumped out a few chestnuts. Seems fishy to me. Out of curiosity, I weighed the bag when I got home. It was 14 1/2 ounces, making it an ounce and a half under what I paid for. Seems very dishonest of this particular employee.

Starts at 1/4 pound. Price scales according to weight. Slight discount when you buy more ($11 per pound).

The intoxicating fragrance of fresh roasted chestnuts greets you outside Mitsuwa Market. My usual ritual after eating and shopping inside. Food: Chestnuts roasted in charcoal. Simple and delicious. Still good the next day, and the day after. Grade: A+ Service: No complaints. Grade: A Ambiance: It's basically the parking lot. Great if you love cars. Grade: Unknown Menu: See above. Only one item. Grade: A Price: $6 for 1/2 pound, $11 for 1 pound. Buy at least a pound for your eating pleasure. Grade: B+ Seating: Curb. Grade: B Cleanliness: Chestnuts are covered under a sneeze guard. Grade: A Bathroom: Anywhere you wish. Grade: Unknown Parking: Sucks. Grade: D Girl sitting with cart Scoops chestnuts with a vengeance While reading a book

So proud of cracking a whole chestnut open :)

I love their roasted chestnuts so much! Located in front of Mitsuwa market on Saturdays and Sundays only, I eagerly count down the days until I can grab my next 1lb bag. They stay open until their bin runs out of chestnuts. The latest I've been able to successfully get to them is about 4-4:30pm. During my last visit on a Sunday, there was a super-friendly gal working and patiently answering all my questions. She informed me that they do add some sugar during the roasting process, but ONLY to prevent the chestnuts from sticking together while also adding a light shiny coat. The sugar does not get inside the chestnut itself, so the sweetness is the true taste of their freshly roasted chestnuts, no funny business. I asked for tips on how to get them open in one piece and she said that the best way to crack chestnuts is to do it while they are still warm-- the inner skin is less likely to stick to the meat. Also, reheating is best performed at 300 degrees for 4 minutes in the oven. Wow, not only do they sell delicious fresh chestnuts, they're glad to give helpful hints too! Note: They're unavailable for a few months during the summer, but present for most weekends out of the year.

We love warm chestnut on cold winter day and always drop by Anson for a 1 lb bag of warm chestnut. It does get cold by the time we got home and we reheat again the over. The price is very steep and expensive $10 for 1 lb but it is nice. It come with a little opener. (see my picture). The kids always friendly and will give you sample or tips to open the chestnut. They are roasted at the stall. They are open on weekend only I was told and cash only.

I love to eat these roasted chestnuts. My craving for the roasted chestnuts allowed me to drive a long distance to get them.

My favor place for chestnuts. Ranch 99's Korean chestnuts just can not compare. It is small but sweet. 1 lb is about right for 3 of us.
