This place is seriously delicious. To any young folks out there, you don't have to be 21 to enter or to purchase food! You'll order on the right side once you enter in, but do remember that it is CASH ONLY. Cool this is, right outside is a bunch of ATMs so no worries if you need a place to grab some moola. The only things I've tried have been one of the burritos and the Stoner tots/fries. Don't remember the Burrito much except that it's good quality and worth getting if you're stuck on campus. With Stoner fries/tots, they're as decent of "carne asada fries" you can get close to within walking distance of campus. I tend to ask for the tots to be extra crispy. They have salsas on the side for you to grab, and it's an adequate portion given the fact that it's on a college campus. Overall, it's a treat spot to occasionally visit for me. Oh how I yearn for the days of yore, when the Anthill Pub was on the second floor of the student center, the bar was about 45 feet long, pool tables abounded, and there was outdoor seating with adequate heckling room. Oh the days of going up to the pub for one beer at lunch time / two beers at lunchtime / one pitcher at lunchtime / an afternoon at the pub / oh hell I don't need to go to class that bad / let's see who else I can get to join in my class ditching tomfoolery. Alas, those days are gone, I am no longer a student and instead of missing class, I am skipping out on my job as a master of the custodial arts, and the new Anteater Pub location is a bit tepid, with no outdoor seating and a lack of bar games. However, they DO have an AMAZING selection of beers, and in Irvine, that is the deal of the century. And it's on campus! And they give you free chips sometimes. And their sweet potato fries are wicked good. These are all glorious things to be enjoyed with friends, or by yourself as you "study." Unfortunately, when I went in the other night, it was packed with people, and the bartenders were hopelessly aloof. The line was hideous (up to 10 minutes), and one of the girls seemed totally overwhelmed and unable to multi-task. Usually I'm all for the fact that they let you try the beers, but I ended up ordering because I didn't want to wait 5 minutes between trying a drink because the girl was playing her own personal game of human shuffleboard. The Pub has it's merits, but at the end of the day, just having good beer and decent food isn't quite enough. read more

Sighh, dearest Anthill Pub & Grille, thank you for helping me pull through my last couple years of college! haha, just kidding,...well sorta.. :] I returned for a visit after a whole year of being apart, and all the good 'ol memories came rushing back *tear* Me and my friends came here on the regular (after our classes of course....), usually after 4pm (till 7pm) because that's when Happy Hour begins! It's $1 off pints and $3 off pitchers--bringing the pitchers down to about a measly $9! (depending on the type of brew you order). Never once have I ever received a flat beer from this pub! For a pub that's located on a college campus, they've got quite the variety on tap! My favorite has got to be "Purple Haze"--it is very difficult to find this beer elsewhere, so be sure to try this while you're at it. This pub is also great if you wanna grab a bite to eat (the food is pretty good too!) and watch the game in between classes. TIPS: - This place is CASH ONLY! -- but there are ATM machines oh so conveniently located outside (chase, wells fargo, bank of America). which is a good thing...and a bad thing i guess haha. - Got the drunk munchies? It's not on the menu, but try their "Stoner Fries;" inspired by ever so popular dish, carne asada fries. The meat isn't steak, but its some sort of ground beef...not the best fries I've ever had, but still very good! - The Quarter Club: Come have a drink at the pub every day for a quarter and your name will be engraved on a metal plate and put on a plaque on the wall! Came here after class for my first time last night. They have a huge selection and the bartender was very patient with our indecisiveness over deciding what to get. The prices are pretty good and the "stoner fries" are super nomnom! Anthill Pub has been a consistent go-to watering hole of mine in OC. Even though places like Eureka have moved in right across the street, I still find myself going to Anthill. The pub is located on campus at UCI next to the Student Center. If you're not a student, I would suggest parking across the street at the UTC - you should be good, just walk through the UTC and go across the bridge. It is Cash only here, but there is an OCTFU, Chase and Wells Fargo ATM machines located right outside the pub. I like coming to Anthill b/c their beer selection is great and it rotates on a regular basis as well. You can always see what's on tap on their Facebook page. They always have a good selection from local breweries. If you are unsure which one to choose, they offer you samples so you can taste ahead of time. I suggest going for their happy hour (4-7PM) - The pitchers are couple bucks off and you can't beat the deal anywhere for good craft beer. They serve a small selection of wine as well, but no hard alcohol. As for the food, I've only had the tator tots (gotta leave more room for the brew), but make sure to order the tots w/o the seasoning unless you want them to be super salty. The portion size is good as you get a tray worth of tots. The only negative is that I wish they had more TVs (I think there are 3 total) - if they did, then I'd go and watch my favorite sports teams there. Make sure to tip the bartenders!!! read more

Great brew selection at reasonable prices - 12 bucks or so for a pitcher. Never experienced this, but friends have said that the bartenders can sometimes be quite the beer snobs. Otherwise it's a great on-campus place to hang out. Note: the place is cash only. Seriously, who carries cash these days? I only carry cash in my wallet when I'm in vegas and even then it's usually gone pretty quickly. Anthill Pub has happy hour between 4-7 and it gets packed. It can be difficult to find a seat or table during those hours. I think they need to cordon off some of the outside to make an outdoor patio area, and with the freed-up room, put some pool tables on the inside. I love the pub! What student/alum doesn't?! Happy hour is from 4-7pm ($1 off pints and $3 off pitchers) and feature local, craft brews that they rotate on a weekly basis. They also have food options such as chips & salsa/guar and really tasty potato tacos. Don't forget your cash because they are cash only (but they're are ATMs outside)! They've been steadily raising prices over the past few years, which is really unfortunate because it's now on par with other HH's (think Eureka and Yardhouse) and isn't as budget-friendly for the student population. Also, if you don't already have a UCI parking permit you do have to pay for parking but as anystudent/alum know, UCI parking is inescapable and ruthless. read more

It's hard to find a pub that sells as many craft brews for such an awesome price in Orange County, especially in Irvine. They have about 30 beers on tap, some of the usuals being Scrimshaw Pilsner, Racer 5, Black Butte, Purple Haze, No. 38 Stout, and a few ciders for the ladies. They also rotate in some heavy hitter crafts from mostly California breweries if you're lucky. If you not into beer they do have a decent wine list, no hard alcohol though. The food can be hit and miss depending on who is in the kitchen, but you have to remember this is a college pub, not a gastropub. I just wish they had some cheese... Good crowds on Thursday and Friday nights, mostly college undergrads and grads. Lots of great bartenders through the years that are great to talk to and educators in their own right to the world of beer for these college students. Parking is pricey on campus but you can usually park across the street at the UTC after 5 and just walk over. Make sure to leave a tip! read more

I feel like Howard Wolowitz every time I come here. This pub is targeted to all the Ph.D students and UCI professors who want to drink and forget how incompetent their students are. *zot, zot*. I'm kidding! I didn't and don't currently go to this school, but I come here on occasion to hang out with my Ph.D friends. It's a neat hang out to be at on a Friday afternoon. Sure, with just a mere Master's of Engineering degree from a Public University, the conversations that happen there are way over my head. No matter, with 7-8 dollar pitchers (roughly 3 pints) of ice cold beers during happy hour, we could have a conversation about feelings and I would still be happy to hang here. The food is decent, but part of the reason why I don't come here as often is because they jacked the food to fair prices. The sweet potato and curly fries are good to share, but I'm not really a fan of the Fire Ants (buffalo chicken bites). The place can get crowded, so you'll have to be patient with finding a table. This place is Cash only, but there's a Bank of America, Chase, + 2 other kinds of ATMs right outside. A little about my credentials: I first got into cooking & food when I was in college. After being rejected by numerous girls and getting zero action, I decided it was time for a change. I needed a new makeover to boost my geeky, engineering image. I applied for a cooking position at a Mediterranean-Italian Restaurant near my home and learned to cook all sorts of pastas and dishes. I never became a professional chef, but I continue to enjoy & love food. 8 years later and 55 lbs heavier, I am now an engineer that travels all over the world trying new foods and learning about different cultures. read more

The pre-renovation, pre-trendy ultra fab Anthill Pub would have garnered a generous 4 stars from me, with the -1 coming simply from the lack of decent food on the bar menu. The brand spankin' new Anthill P&G, although real purty on the inside, most certainly only deserves 3.5 stars at the most -- and the addition of the .5 from the outstanding selection of beers on tap. The old pub had a real PUB feel to it, to quote another reviewer above me -- pool tables, crappy but functional arcade games, darts, the works -- as well as a sprawling outdoor patio where we cancer stick wielders all kicked it without fear of scorn or shame. The new pub feels like... a mini Yard House with bigger chairs and better beer choices -- no outdoor patio, no games of any kind, nothing to offer the typical pubgoer other than beautiful bright plasma flat screens -- as well as a much more sophisticated food menu. It breaks my beer drinkin', cigarette inhalin' lil' heart to have to give this place only 3(.5) measly stars. I feel that its shining past alone deserves much more recognition. I didn't even go to UCI; my UC's on-campus pub went through a big remodeling process of its own not too long ago, so I understand what these kids and locals went through. Alas, this isn't Yelp for Yesteryear. Bottom line: parking blows, but so does Steelhead Brewing across the way. Service is so-so, but it's not like a bunch of drunky college kids really give a hoot. Haven't tried the food yet -- don't plan to anytime soon. An $11 pitcher rocks, having no hard liquor definitely does not. All in all, Anthill is worth checking out, especially if you have friends who live nearby (or maybe, an ex-boyfriend you're still pining after who happens to work on campus) -- but don't depend on transforming it into your local watering hole. read more

Seems like the pub is steppin' it up with the food! I tried the pulled pork sandwich last time I came in here, and surprisingly it was one of the better pulled pork sandwiches i'd had in a while. They have a great beer selection, though sometimes when it gets busy they end up running out of certain kinds by the end of the night. Happy Hour is 4-7pm, and it's $1 off pints and $3 off pitchers so you can get yourself a pitcher of something for around $8. This is a great place to stop by between classes or after a midterm to just kick back and relax. They also have comedy nights on most Mondays during the school year. Some of the comedians really were not funny, but there have also been some really good ones as well. In terms of food, I like the BLT sandwich and the pulled pork the best. Their sweet potato fries are decent, as well as their stoner fries (somewhat of a spin on carne asada fries). Certainly better than what you can get anywhere else on campus. I wish all of their sandwiches came with fries automatically instead of the potato chips they serve, but then again I should probably just be happy that there's actually a place that serves alcohol on campus. read more

Came here last Friday when visiting some friends from UCI. 1) The beer is cheap. 2) They had a live band playing and their bassist was SMOKIN'. 3) The people that worked behind the bar were diligent and nice. 4) The drunk people there were very entertaining. I tried the Purple Haze raspberry wheat beer and it was DELICIOUS. That beer is mos def gonna be my choice beer from now on. Also tried the hard apple cider, which was good as well. Haven't tried their food yet but probably will some day. Most pints are $4.50. They have a lot of live music which ranges from reggae ska (Sublime) to hip jazz. No cover, so just enjoy. Stoner tots are to die for! And I love the happy hour prices! They have a super nice and friendly staff. Had my first beer here when I turned 21 in October! I love this place. The drinks may not be the best but they are cheap!Lets face it once your a little buzzed your really not concerned about the taste of your beverage. I really like the crowd, you meet people from everywhere and they all have a different story to tell. The food is amazing, last week I ordered carne asada tacos and OMG I haven't had a taco like that since I was in East LA. (Before the remodeling) This is one of the placed I really looked forward to going to when I turned 21. I thought it was "so cool" to drink a pint of beer before/after class and then take a little nap at Aldrich Park. It was a great place to hang out between classes and after the Reggaefest. I'm not sure how fun it is now after the remodeling. I heard that they took out out the pool table, and they don't have that outside balcony area anymore. Favorite place to go for the munchies! For a senior, I don't go to the Pub as often as people think I do. However, whenever I do come here, its always a great experience. The atmosphere is great for hanging out and winding down after a hard week. I went here for a friend's birthday and the food is great. I ordered the Stoner Tots (MUST GET!) and the California Burrito. The burrito started off really good but towards the end it was a bit salty. However the homemade tortilla chips it comes with are amazing! Definitely gonna miss this place when I graduate. read more

The best (maybe the only?) night-time hangout around UCI. Great beers - all classy, brewery-made, and probably about 25 on tap at any one time. No Budweiser or Coors to be seen here! The bartenders are students and the owner, and they're all pretty cool and get to know you. They have various entertainment on certain nights: trivia night, comedy night, jazz night, etc. One downside is that their pitchers are about half the size of a real pitcher; there's only about three beers in each one. The food is okay, but nothing special. The kitchen tends to close around 8:00 and last call is around midnight. It's a good spot to come after work with friends. As an alumni of UCI, I have fond memories of the old Anthill Pub. My usual lunch was a corndog, fries, and a pint of Downtown Brown. All for about $5. The new pub is still college income friendly. Even without their happy hour, the prices are the best in town. I was able to get a bottle of Three Philosophers for ~$10. That's barely even a markup! The sweet potato fries and seasoned fries are perfect to snack on while you're enjoying the great selection of craft beers they have on tap. Cons: No more corndogs. Not open on weekends. Crap parking. You have to pay to park on campus, but I just park at the University Center and walk (~10min). read more

So while studying for my TEFL (teaching English as a foreign language) certification at UCI Extension last summer, my classmates and I frequented the on-campus pub (thumbs up to you, UCI) most weeks of our summer-long program. I love the "fire ants" (buffalo chicken with celery & carrot sticks) with a tall, refreshing glass of Fox Barrel pear cider. And the giant baskets of fries to share. Better than Disneyland. Generous selection of superior beer and wine that not only will satisfy the tastebuds, but they'll make you cool. No doubt. If you want luscious, flowing locks of hair, go to the pub and drink a beer. The pub's also getting in new beer quite often. In addition to the outstanding beer collection, the staff is hilarious and witty, always friendly, and very good at remembering people, making each visit a welcoming, personal experience. Not to mention, they have a genuine knowledge of beer. I have yet to be disappointed. Scott and Melissa are awesome, and the bartenders and kitchen staff rock! There's always something going on, whether it be trivia, comedy, or my all-time favorite Jazz night on Thursdays, featuring live sets...great talent. The food is also good. My roommate is vegan; I'm not, and we've never had a problem ordering from the menu. My personal favorite is an off-the-menu item, which is basically the chili fries with guacamole and other stuff. Something that I often take for granted is a clean restroom. How often, I've stepped into another bar only to discover myself walking into a puddle of piss and tissues. There's only so much I can do to express my utmost gratitude that the staff really keeps things clean. I can honestly see how much pride they have in their work. Good job guys, and thank you! All in all, the Anthill Pub and Grill serves a dynamic, inviting atmosphere that brings in a diverse crowd of people to the many events that they host each night of the week. Never went to UCI but I can't say that really matters. The beer selection here is phenomenal. And at least some of the taps are rotating, so you can typically find something new. No hard liquor and no generic domestics means the fraternity crowd you might expect to be here isn't, or at least they're not up to their beer bonging high jinks. Music is a louder than I'd like and seating is limited. The funniest thing about this place is the orderly line that UCI students make at the bar. Never seen that before at a bar. Props. read more

Park across the street and walk across the bridge to find this place. Campus is empty...is this place open? Get close, we see some body's. Score. Walk inside and see a decent crowd. I didn't expect too much from a bar on a commuter schools campus. Turn to the right? WAHHH where was my LAN party invite? This place straight up has customers that bring their own laptop's, xbox's and PS3's to play games. MvC and Street Fighter oh my! I was actually kinda into it because I played a lot of games when I was younger =P Bartender was pretty nice. Good selection of beers. The Pub has a good atmosphere, though later in the night the music gets rather loud. The beer selection is nice, lots of IPAs and reasonably priced. I do wish they offered mixed drinks though. In terms of food, I thoroughly enjoyed the Stoner tots and the mozzarella sticks...be careful with the Super Spicy wings though! They don't have a ton of flavor and will bring tears to your eyes. I believe the key to a successful education, is with a responsible dose of leisure, leisure in the form of a beautiful pitcher of beer. Let's face it, what better place can there be on campus than the place with beer? None that I can think of... The Anthill Pub, located in the most bustling part of campus, the student center, is a great place to be even if you aren't thirsty... drinks aren't the only great things offered at the pub... the food is pretty good too. The Anthill Pub's decor and atmosphere is pretty true to the pub feel, and that goes with its food too, that being said, the menu is nothing especially exotic... burgers, sandwiches, hot dogs, fries, the standard choices enough to satisfy the average college student's appetite. The price range isn't too high; I don't think there's anything on the menu that surpasses eight dollars. All in all, this is a great place to go after a long day of class, or maybe if class is a little more entertaining buzzed, a great place to go before class. read more

I loved the pub back when I was in college. However, it has recently been taken over by Aramark. The new owners kept the name in order to avoid negative press; however, they have mistreated the previous employees to the point where most of them have quit within 1-2 months (including the manager, who was responsible for the Pub's amazing beer selection). They enacted a system which prioritizes profit over community and have introduced policies which favor the bartenders that they brought in, who know little about bartending and even less about creating the warm and welcoming environment which Scott's team has so lovingly crafted within the Pub over these past years. -Bartenders are now discouraged from speaking to regular customers at the bar. They are watched via cameras to make sure that they are not engaging in conversation too frequently -The price of drinks has gone up, as prices do not include tax. This is not a huge deal, but it is inconvenient and it also means that bartenders get tipped less. It does not help that tips on credit cards are allocated to just one bartender who took the order, whereas cash tips are split... and guess who works the section which mostly pays in card? That's right... the inexperienced bartenders Aramark brought in. - Food is no longer that great. - Beer selection is still good, but in reality, I would not expect this to be maintained now that Scott is gone. And anyway, without the soul of the pub, you might as well just go across the street to Eureka. They've got a bigger beer selection. - That feeling of coming "home" to the pub after a long day of school/work/whatever is gone. None of the regulars are there. This place, which is usually bustling on Thursdays and Fridays, was EMPTY on Thursday of opening week. I am very sad to see this happen to the Pub, but hey - it's just the Aramark touch. They sure love turning their profits into gold and everything else into... well, it's another four letter word. read more

I still amazes me that UCI has a pub on campus, out of all the UC's UCI is the last one I'd imagine having one. Anyway once you step into this place you sort of forget you're on a college campus since everyone is sitting around drinking and talking. The vibes here are really great, and they tend to have comedy nights on onday and have musicians play on Friday nights. They have a pretty decent beer selection to choose from, my personal favorites from there are Purple Haze, Snake Bite, Black Butte, and Great White. This is the great place to come after a long day of classes, a midterm, final, or just to come get a beer with friends. A word of warning they have happy hour from 4-7 pm which means that this place gets super crowded. Sometimes it becomes impossible to find a table and the line to get beer gets quite long. During happy hour pitchers are $9, normally $12, and pints are $3.50. normally $4. So if you're at UCI and you're looking for a drink, then I suggest stopping by the pub. Oh yeah and this places has tons of TVs always on sport channels, which makes this a great place to watch games live. read more

New pub gets 3 stars Old pub gets 5 stars Take the mean and you get 4 stars The old pub was a hideaway with a balcony for cigarettes or conversation, wooden floors to soak up the beer and the bar was in close proximity to every table. I miss the smaller pub and the balcony and the beer bottle decorations serving as crown molding. I've been to the new pub twice --- there are flat screens and more tables now. It's definitely more spread apart and better suited for hosting ASUCI / AGS events. Beer selection is good - I was introduced to my first ciders here. Sometimes get snake bite or purple haze beer. Pints are $4 - $6 and Pitchers are $12 I think. You can't go wrong.. If only UCI had free parking after a certain time but you can park in short term parking for a few hours or better yet --- snag one of your friends with a parking permit. Patronage is pretty diverse on thursday nights - or at least it was when I used to be employed by UCI Student Center a few years ago when we used to run the pub kitchen. I think the same groups returned after the remodel since I saw a few familiar faces when I headed back for some pints with friends. I'll have to agree with everyone here, the new pub just isn't the same anymore. The old pub used to have that bar feel to it, pool tables, games, darts. I didn't try the food at the new bar...just didn't feel like it, but I remember back in the days, once you walked into the pub to its inviting atmosphere, there's no way you can pass on those curly fries! Anyway, the new place isn't bad, it just doesn't have the "chill" feeling anymore...more like grab your drink and go. Still, 11 dollars for good beer is just too good to pass up. Grab a pitcher of Allagash White (my favorite) and another of Heavenly hefeweizen (sweeter more fruity hefeweizen, lemon NOT recommended) and you're set. read more
