I brought my adult granddaughter to CAV during Restaurant Week for a birthday lunch. We had early reservations and were seated at a lovely table by Cliff. Our drinks were good but the food was outstanding. The Watermelon Gazpacho was the star of the show, though the mushroom risotto and raspberry sorbet were also nicely conceived. Hands down best clam chowder I've ever had. Soooo flavorful! My entree was the filet, it was cooked medium and was buttery and tender. We came by for an early mother's day brunch on Saturday. We had a reservation for 11 am, we were 7 minutes late and were seated immediately. The decor and vibe of this restaurant was fun! It was definitely something I haven't seen before, lots of antiques all over the walls, a sleigh attached to the ceilings, mirrors lined up on the ceilings as well. Service was lacking unfortunately. We were seated at 11:07 am with menus and water, a waiter finally emerged to greet us after about 20 minutes and we placed our drink and food order as we had been waiting for a bit and didn't want to risk waiting longer. We ordered 3 mimosas, the walnut encrusted brie as an appetizer, the maine lobster with scrambled eggs, the pistachio encrusted crab cake with poached egg, and the brioche french toast à la CAV with eggs and bacon. The drinks took about 10 minutes to come out, almost simultaneously with the appetizer, which was absolutely delicious! Our mains came out about 30 minutes later. All super yummy. When it came time to pay the bill, unfortunately our waiter was nowhere to be found again. We waited another 20 minutes and finally paid and left. It wasn't super busy either as there were a few empty tables, but for some reason the general pace of the workers were much slower than your usual restaurant pace. I wouldn't be opposed to giving them another try in the future, maybe grab a drink at the bar or try their dinner menu but unfortunately it's not a place I would be dying to come back to. read more

CAV is one of my favorite spots in Providence, especially for meeting my best friend before a show at PPAC. The decor is fun and eclectic, and the cocktail and mocktail menu never disappoints. The espresso martini is always a go to. We've never had a bad meal, cocktail or service here. There are plenty of options that can be made gluten free, and the portions are generous enough that we almost always leave with leftovers. My only suggestion would be a menu refresh, as it hasn't changed much over the past few years. That said, it's still a solid, reliable choice every time. Bonus points for having a parking lot, though fair warning, GPS can be a little tricky and may not bring you to the correct side. I've definitely done a few loops around the block before figuring it out. read more

Dinner at CAV was exquisite! The eclectic decor, food and service were impeccable. They have a nice beverage menu. Two of our foursome had OJ & rum cocktails, two of us had red wine. I had a glass of the lowest priced Cabernet Sauvignon ($11.50) and it was lovely. A basket of warm bread and whipped butter was delivered to our table with the drinks. We started with 2 orders of shrimp cocktail ($15 each). Each order had 3 huge shrimp in what tasted like a homemade cocktail sauce. The Native Point Judith Calamari ($18) was pan seared with garlic, lemon, banana peppers and basil. It had a lovely buttery flavor and was so good. My entree was the Duck Confit ($38). The seared breast was enhanced with a cranberry orange compote; the leg with a blood orange brandy demi-glace accompanied by sweet potato sage puree. The meat on the leg literally fell off the bone and was absolutely delicious. My dining companions had the Poulet aux Poires (chicken with red pears, $31), Lobster Pappardelle ($39) and 14-oz. Grilled Ribeye Steak ($49). All were delectable, and there was plenty to take home. Since we were (belatedly) celebrating my birthday, the restaurant brought me a complimentary scoop of salted caramel gelato with a candle. Nice touch! read more

I was here for a private event and the menu was a brunch menu...it is the perfect restaurant for a special occasion. The food is plated beautifully and tastes amazing. There's a really rich food culture in RI and CAV is one of them. The food , the art filled environment with statues from all around the world and great service are all things I really appreciate and to get this all under one roof was an awesome experience! I live in NYC so I m somewhat jaded by eating out in other cities because I don't feel like there's a comparison to our rich and diverse food culture. Kickin it off with the queer o meter. A solid 10 perfect for everyone, eat drink and be merry! We went for a Sunday brunch with a friend. None of had been there in a long time and the last visit was a dinner. We enjoyed it then and we got a refresher on why. The funky decor, friendly staff and great brunch choices ranging from soups to sandwiches to omelets and more. For drinks we got a rum runner, Bloody Mary and a a coffee martini. The rum and martini were excellent. The bloody? It wasn't great, it lacked the depth and complexity I like in a good bloody. Frankly that's my only con. Went for a friend's birthday and everything was just ok (I'm surprised by the 4 star average, tbh). The good: the atmosphere is really cool, super unique, amazing cultural art everywhere. I think you can even purchase the pieces if I'm not mistaken. I got the Sophia salad and it was very nicely done. Not over or under dressed, and nice, fresh ingredients. Lastly, I hugely appreciated the menu items saying "vegan upon request". That for me was worth a star alone, it makes ordering so much simpler for everyone involved. So big kudos for that! Skipping ahead to more "good", I didn't get dessert but my friends that did seemed to enjoy them. Honestly, that's kinda the end of the good for me. The drink and food menus are just plain outdated (besides that "vegan" note addition). I looked for one cocktail that I could trust to be not too sweet and couldn't find one. Also, there are WAY too many vodka drinks... that's usually a sign for me that they don't have great cocktails or bartenders. Plus, having "gold" (aka not real) tequila anywhere except the bottom shelf of the crappiest liquor store in town is just a no-no. The whole list just screamed old school, and not in a good way. I ended up asking if I could order a simple margarita and it was just... odd. We kept trying to figure out what we were tasting. It was incredibly tart (better than too sweet at least), but not "lime juice" tart, something else. And that's kind of all I tasted... made me wonder if they're using those powdered lime packets or something? My entree wasn't any better. I got the mushroom risotto and I don't know what that was, but it sure as hell wasn't mushroom risotto! The presentation was like a Thai curry meets a crock pot stew, with the mushrooms in the bowl and the rice on top. That in itself was odd, but I was totally willing to go with it if it tasted great. It did not. Again, kind of stew-like vibes with lots of things that didn't belong and did not taste good (I think I tasted some herbs de Provence in there?). I was hungry so I ate maybe 2/3rds of it, but at some point I just couldn't anymore. A friend also got the same thing and agreed. It was just... weird. Then there's the price. My GF and I each had 1 drink, split a salad, and each had an entree. With tip, it was around $70/person. You can live with not great at $30-40 a head. But $70? No. I couldn't justify trying this place out again even if I wanted to. PVD is such an amazing food city, so I do hope CAV updates and reworks a few things so they can keep up! Had such a yummy breakfast here and can't wait to go back again. I honestly think this is one of the best brunch spots, the atmosphere is so fun (lots to look at inside) and they have a little bit of everything. Almost everyone in our party got the eggs benedict (one of our favorites here) and it was truly a 10/10. I also got belgian waffles to share but we ate those so fast I couldn't even take a picture. I never really love getting iced coffees at restaurants I feel like it never tastes right but we got a huge iced caramel latte and it was amazing. I hated my food so much. I was here with 8 other people and I tried and disliked each dish. It was very underwhelming for the price I paid. The service was slow and it was impossible to pay. I would not recommend this place to anyone. The server was not accommodating whatsoever and we had a very difficult time paying our bill for no reason. To say I am disappointed and frustrated is an understatement. I would genuinely rather go to McDonald's over this restaurant. The scenery is also horrible. It looks like I'm in a horror movie. We returned after an absence of almost 2 years. There were four of us this time we were seated in the black back room for the first time, although I had eaten there on several occasions during dinners hosted by my former university. The place with its unusual decor and electric mix of artwork is quite engaging and enjoyable. It was busy on this Sunday night. We decided to stick with appetizers, which we shared. We ordered thecrab cake, fried artichoke, goat cheese croquettes, mushroom crostini, calamari, and a Caesar salad. We ended the meal by sharing a crème brûlée and a mango sorbet. As people were going to be driving in different directions, only one of us drank alcohol- a Merlot - and everyone shared a large bottle of sparkling water. The check came to $147 without the tip. We made a reservation here for our anniversary dinner. Inside the restaurant was eclectic, wasn't sure what to expect as we'd never been here before. But I liked it! Our server was Tom, he was great! Seems like he was serving every table on the Tuesday night but the service was still very good! We were chatting during dinner so it was nice to not have someone checking on you every 5 minutes and interrupting the conversation. I had a maple old fashioned that was very good. We got the tuna steak, bolognese, and a dinner salad. Everything was good! Serving sizes were perfect for us. We had the salted caramel gelato which was also very yummy! You totally would miss it because it's tucked behind a few building but the parking is easy with the parking lot across the street and the restaurant is super access from the highway! While we were visiting Providence, we made a later dinner reservation at CAV. The location is in a very quiet area and it sits back, nestled in a corner in between some buildings. The inside decor was very eclectic, but it all kind of comes together and was unique. Our server was great. We had lobster bisque and a Cesar salad to start. Then for our entrees my husband had the lobster pappardelle (so good) and I had the striped sea bass (pictured below) everything was cooked perfectly. The prices were reasonable as well. For dessert, the blackberry merlot sorbet had so much flavor and was delicious!!! read more

However, the sauce of ravioli was too sweet for me. I really liked the ravioli itself and the veggies, but the sauce was overly sweetened and didn't go well with the turnips and raviolis. If it was served without the sauce or even just some olive oil I'll love it more. read more

The restaurant itself has a very eclectic cool vibe with chandeliers hanging throughout and antiques everywhere. We really enjoyed how the mirrors, sculpture, floor levels and windows all create a more intimate dining experience for each table. The want bread and whipped butter was nice starter. Absolutely OUTSTANDING! I've loved Cav for quite some time, but if I'm being honest, one of my last meals there I didn't love, and I'd let some mixed reviews steer me away for a bit. I am so glad I decided to return to an old favorite recently. I could not have been more pleased with my experience. I walked in and was greeted by the host who kindly escorted me to a table for one, up on what I'll call the platform. A perfect spot for dining and taking in the spectacular atmosphere. Cav looks like your world traveling uncles special hideaway where they happen to serve delicious food and drinks. I would usually start with the coconut shrimp, but this time the mushroom crostini caught my eye, and it did not disappoint. I ordered the serving for one, and could have easily only eaten half (had it not been so delicious). I followed that with the pappardelle and lobster with roasted fennel in an orange Pernod sauce. OMG! To die for it was. Each bite was absolutely incredible, and the little leftover I had was just as tasty the next night. To drink I had a Scotsman in Paris to start, which is a delightful martini using Hendricks gin and elderflower, and enjoyed a Chardonnay with my entree. The service, too, was wonderful this night. Kind, attentive, and quick. He always seemed to show up just as I needed him. Overall one of my more memorable dining experiences recently. I will definitely be returning more often. read more

This was probably one of the worst brunch spots I've had. The food was severely lacking in flavor with little to no seasoning. The bread under the poached eggs was severely burnt, and none of the food complimented each other. The only saving grace was the kind service. For a place with 4.7 stars on Google and 4.1 stars on yelp, I was expecting higher quality food but was highly disappointed. I would not recommend eating here for brunch. read more

The base of the soup was sweet like butternut squash or pumpkin. It was so yummy and chunks of lobster in it. The crab cake was okay. Nothing special. We order two pastas. The pappardelle pasta was home made and cooked perfectly. The sauce sticks to the pasta perfectly. The meat was super tender. The lobster one had huge chunks of lobster! What an incredibly special and warm place. It feels like home with outstanding food and service. Appetizers came out very quickly after ordering. That was impressive. The pace for the entree and dessert was much slower and appropriate. I started with the mussels in red coconut curry. It was so good, I had to take a spoon to the sauce even after the mussels were done. New England clam chowder came next. It was thick and flavorful with lots of clams and potatoes. They are very generous with the bowl portion. For an entree, I had the sesame encrusted yellowfin tuna which came with a vegetable sushi roll and an incredible sliced carrot and cucumber side. There was also ginger, wasabi, and wasabi mayo. I took some of the wasabi and mixed it into the mayo for a bigger kick. The helping of tuna was very generous. It has a thick crust and was sashimi-raw inside. I loved this dish. The others in my group had chicken and pasta dishes which were all outstanding. For dessert, coconut sorbet for one person and mango for another. The coconut sorbet came out in a coconut. Awesome. Presentation of all the dishes was outstanding. This is a special occasion venue and one I could see my self going to every day. I truly love this place. Remember to tip well. read more

Aaaaaaaaaaaaaaahmazing. It's been a week and I'm still dreaming about those crabcakes.... When you work from home, you rarely get to meet your colleagues. I was lucky enough to meet TWO of them, and they suggested CAV for a lunch where we could get to know each other over delicious food. It's quiet, service is stealthy, and the decor is positively gorgeous. Great ambiance for whatever you're going there for - a date, a meeting, a celebration, or eating your feelings. The person who had eaten there previously asked about the crabcakes - they are a dinner menu thing but we were able to get one and it was WORTH ASKING FOR. Better than the ones I get back home in WA. We also had calamari, which was very lightly breaded and fried, a welcome change from the heavily breaded ones. She and I got the lunch special - teriyaki steak tips with lemon risotto, and he got the seared chicken with poached pears. It was positively decadent and we had very creative martinis to complement the food. My steak was perfectly rare, as I had requested, but not chewy and stringy - a perfect cut. Dessert was delicious - the flavors were there - if not a bit sub par compared to the quality of the food. The creme brulee didn't set, and the "fruit tart" was more like a cheesecake with tart fruit on it. Still really good, but not what we were expecting. Either way, it was a nice way to end the meal. It's always hard when people hype up a place, but CAV definitely lived up to the hype. Next time, I'm going for dinner. read more
