This is our third trip to Rome. Tonight, the staff at this restaurant made us feel like family while steering us to amazing food. The prices and portions for Central Rome were very generous. We started with the focaccia served with olive oil and balsamic for the table. It set the mood. For appetizer we did artichoke and bresola. Every member of the table loved it. The entrees were great. If they are having the mushroom special --get it. It was one of my top 5 things I've ever eaten in Italy. The pumpkin truffle ravioli and mussels were also super stars. The sea bass was fresh and had good flavor though the potatoes were cold and one of the filets was a little drier than I would've like but still tasty. Save room for dessert. Our table sampled tiramisu, panna cotta, blueberry and elderberry cake and the fresh lemon almond biscotti. OMG best biscotti ever. What you also need to know is this. Contrary to the negative reviews, Trattoria Tritone is great! My gf and I are staying in a hotel across the street and we decided to pop in for dinner. Upon arriving, we were promptly seated in the main dining room with plenty of locals. We are both Americans and speak some Italian, but we're far from fluent. The staff were appreciative of our efforts and they did a great job. With respect to the food, we ordered the artichoke appetizer, a pasta dish, meatballs, and the tiramisu for dessert. All of it was great and we both agreed the portions were bigger than we expected for this part of Rome. After wine, water, two coffees, and all of the above mentioned food, our bill came out to €89 which is fair and less than we expected. During a lunch break between our Vatican and Colosseum tour, we got caught in a torrential downpour. Upon hailing a cab to simply get out of the rain, our cab driver recommended this restaurant to us, saying it was one of his local favorites. He called to ask if they were able to accommodate us- and without hesitation they allowed us to come in (despite their entire staff- both the waiters and the chef- eating their lunch at a table when we arrived). The outside of the restaurant is gorgeous, covered in ivy and bougainvilleas (can't even imagine how romantic it is at night). The inside of the restaurant is very cozy, covered in tiles and arches, with chili peppers, pots and pans, and meat hanging from the ceiling. We ordered the pici carbonara and the ravioli with black truffles- both of which were delicious!!! Not sure which dish I enjoyed more. Just a great meal. It's off the madness of Trevi, but close enough to see it and take pictures then have a civilized meal 5 minutes away. We went on a beautiful night and sat outside. Perfect and intimate. We had the carafe of wine, great value and delicious. The bread arrived hot and about three different varieties. All fantastic. We ordered the melon and prosciutto for a starter and then a carbonara, fettuccine fungi and the veal meatballs as a main course. The meatballs were not what we were expecting - they were super small in size (slight larger than a gum ball) and came out cold, mushy and flavourless, and the tomato sauce that covered it tasted like it came out of a can. The carbonara wasn't any better - it was super heavy and gritty tasting. It almost felt like we were eating a bad fettuccine Alfredo as it arrived with a huge goop of white sauce on top. The fettuccine fungi was decent, thought my husband commented that I only felt that way bc everything else was so bad. Good... but so is most every place in Rome. We arrived late one night and just spotted the place on a whim. The host asked if we had reservations. We said no, so he sat us inside and delivered us each a glass of complimentary wine. (Aperitifs are, like, a thing in Italy.) In time, a table outside opened up, so we were ushered out there. Our waiter, God bless him, seemed in a terrible hurry the entire night. As I discussed wine with my girlfriend, she asked him, "How is your rosé?" "Rosé!" he said, and wheeled away. He came back with the rosé and started pouring. We learned pretty quickly that saying *anything* in this guy's presence meant that we were ordering it. I had the spaghetti carbonara, which was nice, but nothing incredible. My girl had some sort of pasta with dried chili peppers inside. She hates spicy stuff, but I love it... so I tried one. I'm still panting, a week later. At least one waiter made a point of singing while grinding pepper for neighboring tables. But it seemed like he was mocking his guests, not legitimately performing. F that guy. A nice touch: When you're finished with your meal, they give you a souvenir ashtray. Because it's Rome and everybody smokes all the time. Disappointed after reading such good reviews. Started with artichoke salad. One small mushy choke served with warm oil. I went back and looked at pictures of this dish from others and the difference was day and night. Next up Pasta Carbonara. Was okay, serving was small, but tasty. My boyfriend and I came here on the second to the last night of our trip to Italy. We made reservations for 8:30 PM and walked over. This place is located near Fontana di Trevi so if you're looking for something close by, this is it. We were greeted and seated after informing them we had a reservation (prenotazione) and were seated in the second room on the left. The room is bright with a fake balcony up top and photos of celebrities who have dined there lining the wall. Our table was next to the photo of Shawn Ashmore from X-men. Behind us was a small section of the wall carved out to hold wine. We ordered bread and olive oil (you must ask for the oil in Rome) and decided on artichoke to start (which is what Rome is known for), the tartufo ravioli (because it's truffle season and protip, eat with the season and region) and the cacio e pepe. The menu is in Italian, English, Spanish, Japanese, and two other languages as well. If a menu is in any other language than Italian, they probably cater to tourists frequently. This one catered to ALL the tourists so I was a bit wary. However when the food came, it was better than I expected. My boyfriend thoroughly enjoyed the artichoke as he never had it prepared that way before. The cacio e pepe was quite rich but it was good. The truffle ravioli had fresh black truffle thinly shaved on top so you could faintly taste the truffle. I would suggest saving some of your bread so you can mop up the oil/sauce the ravioli is in. We also ordered half a bottle of wine (yes it comes in that size here) and two shots of espresso at the end. The check took a while to come after we asked for it, but hey, it was getting busy with the late dinner crowd, so understandable. The restroom is located downstairs and was clean and well kept. The food was solidly above average, not the best we had, but one of the better ones. The complementary appetizers were the best. Went here on a whim. Got into Rome and walked around all day. I was staying up by the termini so I wanted to get away from that area to eat. From hotel by station it's about a 20 min walk, on the way to Trevi Fountain. It's not hidden in any way but I thought it was pretty authentic place. There is nobody outside begging you to come in and eat and the service is not pushy to Americans. It was mixed with more locals anyways. Maybe 80%. The staff was great and food was simple Italian dishes made with super fresh ingredients with amazing flavor. It's a casual place yet busy place, however nobody talks too pound and you can easily hold a conversation at your table. Pretty much anything your order here is going to be great. You just have to be patient. I feel a lot of times Americans wright reviews and say the service is slow or my food took a while to come out. Calm down your in Rome for heaven sakes. Enjoy your time and don't be in a rush everywhere. Order the house red wine by full craft. It's a liter or wine that is filled from the basement as family friends of the restaurant make it. It's no 1982 Bordeaux but it's damn good for 8€. Also too, they make their own lemmoncello so ask for some after your meal and it's complimentary. read more
