We go to a lot of bookstores. A *lot* of them. We travel for work and I try to hit up every non-chain spot I can find. It takes a lot for a bookstore to impress me, because - one would think - isn't a bookstore just a bookstore? This spot is SUPER cute, in a very walkable area of Tucson where they actually appropriately alternate between places to shop and places to eat. They have a wonderful selection of cards you'd never see anywhere else, tons of cute notebooks, and the book selection is great! I don't recall seeing ONE mainstream book, which I loved! I have an embarrassingly large stack of books I need to get through so we only bought some odds and ends. The toy and kid's area is top notch. So impressed, Tucson! read more

The staff are super cool- friendly and helpful . They have a decent selection of books for every interest and several recommendations from staff. They carry several DEI authors/ genres. Antigone use to be one of my favorite bookstores as a local but I've definitely outgrown its quirks. I'm tired of the cold customer service whenever I'm waiting to check out with no line in front of me. Today I walked up to the cashier and greeted them but was only met back with a meek hello and then they quickly walked away. Perhaps I misread them sitting behind the register as they being able to check me out but I definitely don't think that was the appropriate way to redirect me, instead I awkwardly stood there looking to see if the other person was able to check me out. They usually have a great selection but I wouldn't recommend if you actually want to connect with book lovers. read more

Definitely the best bookstore in southern Arizona. Far better than Barnes & Noble, which carries mainly commercial garbage. If you want something unique and truly interesting shop at an Indie bookstore, and Antigone's is the best of the indies. read more

My wife is in a ladies book club and Antigone had it in stock. I will called it , in a hour , it looks new. The selection was on a cart with my name. Service was prompt and efficient. 15 minutes free parking on their lot. Longer than that you can ask for a window pass for the dash. The homeless are right outside the door begging money and is a turn off. But there are a few in fourth avenue, so I guess control is difficult. I would go again n read more

I love a quirky independent bookstore, and Antigone is definitely right up my alley. They've been a lovely feature on Fourth Ave. for the entire time I've lived in Tucson, and I absolutely love dropping in to browse whenever I'm in the area. As a smaller shop, they don't have a huge selection, but I've always reliably been able to find new releases, books related to current events, and a wonderfully-curated array of gems that I might not have known about. They're also happy to order books, if you can't find what you're looking for on the shelves. The books will always be at the marked price on the cover, but in my mind it's 100% worth it to support a local independent business rather than save a few dollars. Plus, Antigone has a loyalty card -- you get stamps for each $10 you spend and then you can redeem the filled card! In addition to their books, I love coming here for gifts. They have a lot of unique local items that make great presents, especially for friends who live elsewhere. Around the holidays, I particularly enjoy shopping for little tree ornaments to give as gifts, and people really love the ones I've gotten from Antigone. Shop local! We had a great experience at this bookstore. They are still requiring masks and limiting capacity and staff were super friendly at the door. They have a solid selection of newer releases as well as some calendars, cards and stationary type items. The store is also solar powered which is awesome! We picked up a card and several books. Decent selection for YA, LGBTQ+, and mystery/thriller. They also have a shelf of advance reader copies you can pick out for free (with a purchase, 1 per customer) which is super cool. I only started frequenting Antigone during the pandemic and must say how impressed I am with how they are handling orders. It's so nice to have a local option to order a book with and pick it up the same day. It's even faster than Amazon! Their website allows you to order and pay online and you'll receive an email when your book is ready to pickup. For quick turn around you can also pick up the phone and call. I live on the other side of town and am trying to limit my trips out and about but I hadn't received my order notice yet so I called and they helped me out and had my book ready! A truly independent bookstore is a rarity, a thing of beauty and a joy to enter. I have stopped in a number of times and realized recently that I never reviewed it here. It starts simply enough, with a small parking lot right next to the building- no need to drive around in circles looking for an empty meter. When you enter the shop you can tell you are surrounded by bibliophiles. The selection of books is vast for a smallish shop, and they are happy to order something for you if they don't have it on the shelf. In addition to books, they have a variety of journals and other lovely items to peruse. A wonderful place to spend an afternoon or drop a dime to support independent bookstores and the local economy- a winner all the way around! read more

It's kind of hard for me to not love a bookstore, but Antigone is one of those places that I want to like a lot, but just can't, because apart from its cool sounding name, it doesn't have a lot going for it. Apart from the section on Arizona that highlights some wonderful local authors, the book selection here is awful. I browsed the history section and found some really questionable stuff. They also have merchandise that is quirky in a very generic sense, but in no way reflects any sort of personality. It's just quirky for the sake of being quirky. What stands out about this place though, is the fact that it is locally owned, solar powered, and has seriously great customer service. Still, you should check it out if you are ever in the downtown area. It's definitely not my vibe, but it might be just what you are looking for. read more

I hope I am not being too foreward with my introduction, but I like your preface. *yuk yuk* In all honesty, Antigone is everything you need in a local bookstore, the owners go out of their way to show their love of books AND community. (Hey ladies! You rock!) Antigone will register your book club (if you don't have one, I got chu) and provide discounts on your book club picks each month, for the entire group! Not only this, they also provide punch cards (for each $10 spent)!! I love me some good deals, especially if it covers (ha get it?!) my reading addiction. There is something about holding a book in your hands physically, and flipping each page (my poor Kindle would cry if she could read this). I love growing my collection, and supporting local. The atmosphere is so cozy and comfortable, and the staff is always eager to help! I'll leave you with a story... yesterday a book fell on my head. I only have my shelf to blame. ;) read more

Sharing the love for local businesses so am going to shout out Antigone Books on #ThankYouThursday! If you're looking to support small/local for your holiday gift shopping, highly recommend Antigone! They have a nice selection of books, funky cards, journals/notebooks, socks, puzzles, and a kid-friendly section. I couldn't find the book I was looking for as a secret Santa gift so the staff helped order it and it arrived within 4 days (much faster than I expected)! The shopping experience also felt so safe during pandemic times - they limit the number of customers who can enter and limit browsing to 30 minutes as well as enforce mask wearing. Antigone is definitely my one and only guilty pleasure on 4th Ave (well during the daytime that is...) I have always loved bookstores growing up, and my favorites have always been local bookstores, where the staff careful curates their selection. In Tucson this is definitely IT for me. Well, the place to get brand new titles that is. Walking in you are immediately greeted with a wonderful array of recommended books. It normally takes me a good 30 minutes just to get through the front of the house just because there are just too many selections to get through. Annoyingly, the staff makes it incredibly hard to walk out with just one title.. Most recently, I walked out with The short and tragic life of Robert Peace, Hyperbole and a Half, and Let's pretend this never happened. I must confess that I only planned on buying two titles, but some sneaky staff wrote the most persuasive review for "Let's pretend this never happened" and stuck it in-between the cover and the title page... Needless to say I was convinced I couldn't live without that one either. Overall, this place is a gem. It is so important to support local businesses, and what better way than buying a book or two from Antigone? read more

My first visit to Antigone completely surprised me. I don't like 4th Ave. It's fairly dingy, dirty, and crawling with people, some of which are highly questionable, particularly when the sun goes down. Therefore, I thought Antigone would be more of the same. But not so! The store is large, clean, and inviting. Their book selection is solid. They have tons of quirky and whimsical tchotchke type items. They have lots of novelty items like bumper stickers and such. It's a very interesting store to walk through. Their prices are generally what's marked on the cover of the book per the manufacturer, so I wouldn't say they're great in that regard, just run of the mill. They do have decent used and sale sections, though, so don't forget to look through those books! The service was cold. Very cold. I expect a LOT more from a local bookstore if you want me to come back to that store. Particularly a store that's in a frustrating area, with little to no available/convenient parking. Overall, Antigone is a decent independent bookstore. I'll definitely go in and maybe buy something when I have the displeasure of being on 4th Ave. read more

Ah, there was so much to look at I am not sure of where to start. Let's start with I got a nice massage from the Tingler that they had on display for sale. If you don't know what a Tingler is, it is a massager that massages millions of nerve endings in your scalp with its spider-like copper arms. They have a ton of cards for any occasion which is why I went in here. Of course they have books, puzzles, art, mugs, posters, magazines, knick knacks, and t-shirts to mention a few. Basically if you are looking for books this is a good local off the sidewalk shop to come into. If you are running out of time and need to head back to Phoenix and have not yet gotten anyone anything, you can also come here and gift shop. They have plenty of items for everyone. read more

I have always loved stopping into Antigone to browse while I'm out and about on 4th. They have lots of unique gifts, cards, and stationary. I don't purchase many books anymore, I try to utilize the public library as much as possible, however I was recently looking for a specific book that the library didn't have. I checked Antigone's website (which could use an update), but it wasn't very helpful so I thought I would just pop over there and see if I could get it. When I stopped in last week they had a table set up in the doorway and their staff was all wearing masks and sanitizing everything frequently (they even sanitized my debit card before handing it back to me, thoughtful!). They had the book I wanted, for a very good price, and I thought to ask if they carried the journals I like (which is a very specific type of journal) and they DID. In the exact color I wanted and for a cheaper price than Amazon, too! Since everything has been weird and unsettling recently it felt so good to stop at a great local shop where they had exactly what I was looking for. It really made my day and I really appreciate the work Antigone is doing to serve the community right now. Books are so important, especially right now while we all have some extra time to read. I highly suggest stopping over and seeing what Antigone has for you today. read more
