I am powerless to an independent book store and this one was a lovely surprise! The selection was fantastic. The politics made me feel at ease. They were queer friendly. Another treasure trove of gifts and curios. (Luchador bottle openers. 'Nuff said.) T-shirts and magnets and coffee mugs and candles and socks and all those bookstore shelf finds that help decorate and style your space a little more to the intellectual side. I loved the featured and recommended books from staff. A few were already favorites of mine and many were books I have been recommended elsewhere. There were also several I hadn't seen or heard of before, and I like the sense of discovery within a quality set of options. There are local Arizonan books and authors featured all over and in their own section. Obviously, there's a rich history and natural backdrop for our city, and there is an accompanying rich literary history. Culinary, too, by the looks of it. I did not get one of these, but Antigone was chosen as one of the release storefronts for signed copies of Neil Gaiman's latest. If they're on his list, I knew I needed to make a visit. I'm a fan of almost every bookstore, that is true, but Antigone really has something special that I think many should have the opportunity to enjoy. They're solar-powered, they're local, they're a small and cozy shop, and they're in a nice area. These are all things that make them special but first and foremost: they like books. The employees actually seem to know something about books, which is a step up from a lot of larger retailers where you ask them where their indigenous studies books are and they need a crash-course in what indigenous studies is, and don't get me started on LGBTQ literature (so many big chains don't even have a specific area for this). Yes, the employees here know about the books in their store: they know where things are, they know what's new, they're up-to-date on events going on in the store. They've always been warm and receptive to me. They're more than willing to watch me struggle between picking between two books (I try to buy one book at a time, which is so hard!) and then come to my rescue and give an opinion on which one they would go with. AND there are little "recommendation" tags all over this place--customer recommendations, book club recommendations, employee recommendations, etc. They are not huge, so they stock recent things that are all full retail price. I know, I know...Amazon can be cheaper. But I really like to support local so I've been trying to buy at least one local book from them (full price and all; although they do have a clearance area!) a month. If you are looking for a book they have a website, but you can always call and ask for a specific title before making the drive. Again, they're more than willing to help you find what you're looking for. A lot of the literary fiction I've picked up here has been great. I adore their non-fiction selections (yay!). And they also have some harder to find genres: LGBTQ, Steam Punk, etc. Lots of children's books as well! They have some great titles that I may just purchase and hang on to until I have children. As someone who really appreciates how they set up their space, it is also cozy and you could bring a kid in here to pick out a book without too much worry that someone will get angry if your kid cries. Seriously, the vibes here are nice. If you are looking for fun gifts, they have all kinds of mugs, magnets, pens, journals, etc., for that perfect gift. You don't have to be queer or queer-friendly to dig this place, but it surely doesn't hurt. Window shop and enter, straighties, you won't turn gay or freak out just by going inside. We're a friendly kind. Jewelry, books, gifts, THE BEST MAGNETS AND PINS SELECTION IN TOWN, cards, slightly new agey fun stuff, a great staff, and great recommendations from them. Well, every time I go to Tucson, I have to stop by Antigone or I feel the trip wasn't complete, so I have to upgrade to 5 stars! I still am not crazy about all the other "stuff" here at the bookstore, but I recognize that is my own personal taste. Other people (and friends I go with) love playing w/Frieda Kahlo finger puppets, and posters, and mugs and various cat paraphernalia. I prefer a bookstore just to be a bookstore, but if you are looking for gift items, their selection and quality is pretty superior to most (although Blue Willow has a bangin' weird kitchen utensil section...but not with a lesbian angle). I find their staff selections of particular interest, I always find a sociology book or women's studies book or economy book worth my time and interest. I love their work and displays, and they have a size able Graphic Novels section. I always buy my magazines here (bust, bitch, readymade, venus, etc) and Papaya cards. In fact, I realize I should be grateful for all the stuff they have for non-book enthusiasts to pay with, so I can browse and read in peace! read more

I love this store more than any other store in Tucson! They have a great selection and will order anything! I asked if they had a certain dr Suess book for my daughter long before this was my favorite shop. It was one of the first time I have been there.. They didn't have it.. They asked many times if they could order it and call me when it came in! Due to time frames that was not an option but who these days does that? They have so many adorable nick nacks and local items. They have mugs to magnets, wall hangings to stuffed animals and clothes, on top of books books books! And when you are done shopping they give you a stamp card for a future purchase after you buy 200$ worth of stuff... It's really easy to do! But they also do free and beautiful gift wrapping! Did I mention I love books? This is another bookstore I can get lost in. If they do not have the book that you're looking for in stock, they will order it for you. And it's not just books that they have here, jewelry, bags, accessories, hard to find gum! It's also located right on 4th avenue, so that's another plus. This place is eccentric and weird, but also cute and cozy. This bookstore has a personality of its own and I love it. My only thing is that they do not specialize in used books. Cute little local bookstore on 4th Avenue. Grab a coffee at Epic Cafe, then wander down to Antigone...great store for browsing, reading, and buying. My favorite part about this place is the Second Sundays book club. Focuses on women fiction authors. A diverse group of about ten ladies. Very laid back...they sit in a circle in comfy chairs and compare notes. Everyone is very friendly and you get to meet people you probably normally wouldn't. I found this place when I first moved to Tucson. Just the title had me intrigued. I miss the local bookstore with local flair. Borders and B&N have put a majority of these stores out of business. Thank you to the alternative scene in Tucson! Yes, they have great books on a variety of topics. Most are alternative lifestyle centric. This is the first place I go for that special book or journal for important people in my life. I always find something no one else has. They also have a large selection of bumper stickers, pins & magnets that are socially/politcally focused. Some are hysterical and I can't help but read everyone - everytime I go inside. I would recommend this for anyone who loves interesting finds. read more

Political democratic and liberal bookstore would be an appropriate name. Stupid that you have to give your name before you enter the store and you have only 30 minutes. The best type of small independent bookstore! They have a specialization (gender issues and equality), they hire people who care about that specialization, and stock books and stickers and things along those lines, but they're not bound to it - there's all sorts of fun things here that you might find. Lots of staff recommendations and other personal touches that make it a joy to visit. I'd feel guilty about the fact that I usually use this place for book recommendations (that I then purchase off Amazon), but I always make sure to buy some stickers and/or magnets or toys - and given that the profit margin on those is far higher than on books, I figure I've balanced my karma. I've heard some complaints about the staff, and it's true that they're not the hop-up-and-get-in-your-face kind, but I actually prefer that - I'm usually pretty independent, and don't mind asking for help when I need it. Today I walked there on my lunch hour and spent a good 10 minutes in the store; I was not greeted upon entering the store, as I walked around, nor when I left. Also this store clearly is one-sided and is uncomfortable if you are not right-winged. I shop local as often as I can and was looking to buy something for a friend who lives out of state to prep her for a visit to AZ. Great bookstore, but not a whole lot of variety in the options. It seems they stick to very niche options, which is great if you're into those specific things. The big themes here are LGBT, cooking, and steampunk. Half of the store is unrelated to reading books and there's an interesting variety of calendars, writing stock, and knick-knacks. It's fun to come and browse the place to find some books that aren't commonly found in other stores, but it's not a place to frequent. read more

The book selection is great and the staff is very helpful (in fact I go there so often they've started recommending books better than Amazon). I haven't been into Antigone Books in a while. Had called and was looking for a particular Calendar for 2017. They had it and more... pleasant staff guided me with purchasing children's books as well as a few quirky gifts for that "hard to buy for" person.. I spent an easy hour browsing and still hadn't seen everything. I have to come back for more.. who'd a thought half my Christmas shopping could be done at this quaint store on 4th avenue. Many years ago The Haunted Bookshop was my favorite indie place to buy books of all sorts. When they closed, much to my chagrin, I had to find a new favorite. Ever since, Antigone has been my Go To for just about everything in the literary realm, as well as unusual gift items. I love the people who work there, too, because it's obvious they love books as much as I do. I drive about 18 miles to get there from Oro Valley, and feel it's well worth the effort! read more

To me, not much gets better than a local, independent bookstore. Find just about anything readable here, though their specialty (I would say) is LGBT and feminist material. They also have a fantastic kid's section. Their staff is friendly and incredibly helpful. Also a great place to find political bumper stickers, t-shirts and such. read more

The creep factor in this bookstore is way too high. I agree with other reviewers that there is a good selection of cute gifts, bumper stickers, and refrigerator magnets. There is a sign at the door asking that you leave your bag with the cashier while shopping, which I did promptly. Nonetheless, an employee shadowed me everywhere I went. As I was making my way to the cash register, my husband entered the store. I began to show him a few funny items that I had found. When I turned to leave the store (after making several purchases), I noticed the shadow woman. My husband said that she had followed me the entire time. I then regretted having ever entered the store. It is a sad commentary that shop owners feel that they have to follow customers around, but those of us who voluntarily hand over our bags and make purchases? Seriously. Looking over the reviews it seems we all pretty much enjoy the same features that bring us here over and over again. I LOVE dropping in here and most especially when I am not on a "mission." It's a great place to browse and, as others have said, although not a mega sized shop, it is neatly packed with fabulous items in addition to books. This is really the place to find a special greeting card , boxes of incredible stationery, gorgeous prayer flags, interesting t-shirts, etc. No one is there to pester you, only to help if you ask. The selection of interesting paperbacks including staff picks, is amazing (I never buy hard cover books) and I love supporting not only a locally-owned business but one that supports local artists of all kind. (I wish I could afford those exquisite felted hand-bags) And, let us not forget that they support local writers of both prose and poetry (maybe other literary forms too) in their reading series which are intimate and comfortable. Funniest damn birthday cards on the planet, and you'll overpopulate your fridge with their witty magnets...they even have an entire display of photoshopped bush-hatin' cards (the Rocky Horror Bushenfurter is the schnizz). Be ready to pay more than you'd like for hard-to-find items, and the novel selection is right on. You won't find these tomes at B & N. Antigone Books was one of the first feminist book stores in the nation, and I'm thrilled that it's still going strong. Their book collection has been beautifully curated to represent women and minorities (both authors and characters). Every book they sell has been carefully selected, so you know it'll be an excellent read. Their children's books are excellent. The staff are super knowledgeable about the titles they offer and have always given me great suggestions - I've never been disappointed. This place also has a ton of cute little gifts and and they often host community events. The store fits right in with the 4th Avenue vibe. I had the pleasure of meeting Raul Grijalva at Antigone's 40 year anniversary party. This place is truly a Tucson gem. read more

I was in Tucson on business. Stopped in here. And I LOVED the place. I went back like 3 times. I felt sooooo comfortable. The selection was FAB!!!! I bought a few books and cards. I did not have my baby then, if I had, I would have bought for her there. The children's section was GREAT. It was so great that a woman with no kids, and none on the horizon remembers it. I'm a little embarrassed to say this-- but it was my first time checking this place out. I felt like I was cheating on bookmans. But now I realized they are very different stores. :-) We went shopping with our out of town friends here-- there was something for everyone! We all walked out with a bag full of goodies! Books (local authors and otherwise), local Tucson gifts, eclectic items and much more. We even found books in Spanish (which I'm sure isn't difficult in Tucson, but we didn't have to shop around, which was nice). This is a Tucson gem. Cool little local bookstore. The selection of books is eclectic compared to chain stores. They might not have the novel you want to buy, but if you are looking for something quirky or off-the-wall, you just might find it here. I went in looking for books on local plant life and walked away with a stack of books. Really great! And the way I found those books was to ask the friendly and extremely helpful staff. This place also sells all sorts of eclectic knick-knacks, cards, stationary, etc. Also sells tickets to local concerts occasionally which is nice (I hate ticketbastard). If things look a little pricier than you might think they should be, try to remember that you're supporting a local business. And even better, you're supporting a local business in the one part of town where you can walk from shop-to-shop-to-shop. So after buying something, head over to Che's and buy yourself a congratulatory pint for doing something good for downtown Tucson. read more
