It has been many years since we have been here. I remember eating here as a kid in the early 70's the meatball grinder and the Mafia grinder were always my favorite back in the day. We decided to pick up lunch today and got one of each sandwich. Wow what a great food memory! The bread is just as I remember, the meatballs were very good and a generous portion, delicious. We got the Mafia with extra meat and cheese but unless you are really hungry you probably don't need to. Antone's is a Riverside landmark that is the same today as it was 50 years ago. I've lived around the corner from Antone's for two years now. My wife and I have been curious about them but "they're never open" we thought. Then I read on next door they closed and we're opening up on random days. Well I think the true story is, they're just opened for limited hours, LUNCH! So if you're not a local at mid day, you'll miss them. Well to the experience we had. My wife and I happened to be passing by on a weekday at lunch hour and dropped in. A couple people were just leaving and we had the place to ourselves. A young man gave us the low down on the menu and suggested the meatball sub on garlic. He said garlic bread is a added cost but for our first time he'd give it to us for free to test. He assured us we'd always order it that way. We were not disappointed at all the sandwiches were great! I really hope the hours get expanded and more people go by and support this local spot! I overheard the guys saying they're open on Saturdays, or that they will be. So if you're at work during the week, try to go on the weekend. read more

This place has been around forever, a real hole in the wall kind of place that I have driven by a thousand times, but never stopped to consider. I did a little research and they appear to have a strong following and a lot of people who love it. I finally recently decided to stop by and give it a try. I got the meatball sub on garlic bread and another side of garlic bread because carbs are delicious. It's COVID, of course, so I take it to go just a short drive to my house. I opened the sub first. It was good, but I honestly didn't understand the hype around it. There are a lot of places in Riverside that make a good meatball sub, so maybe I had high expectations because of all the hype in the reviews. It really just kind of was okay. The meatballs were sliced, almost like a meatloaf sandwich. The meatball was soft and a little mushy, not bad but not quite the texture I love most of the flavor seemed to come from the sauce. I couldn't really sense any enhancement from ordering the sub on garlic bread (which is an upcharge), and I could tell why when I opened my side of garlic bread. I expected something more than the pale yellow and lightly seasoned toasted sub roll that I got. It was honestly kind of dry. Not much in the way of garlic or other seasoning. For years I've wondered what the hell is in that building? It's always closed, at least when I drove by. Is it a front for something? Permanently closed but no one bothered to make it apparent? So I guess pure curiosity and a desire to try some place in central Riverside I've never been to before led me to Antone's, the mysterious Italian restaurant. From the reviews I didn't learn much except people loved the sandwiches. Did they have dine in service? Wine? As it turned out, neither. Walking in from the back (I like coming in from the back ;) I took in my surroundings. Tables, empty, but people standing in line. Only then did it dawn on me they were a lunch place, primarily for take out, but ample seating for a bus of seniors if necessary. In addition to am unfulfilled quest to find the ultimate Cuban sandwich, I hunt high and low for the ultimate meatball sandwich too. The wonderful gal who took my order told me I could try it with their garlic bread as an option. Evidently that wasn't well known as another lady, a regular it seemed, exclaimed she never knew that. I decided to stay simple and establish a baseline with the sandwich as is before delving into garlicky waters. That and a cup of water led me to consider coming here again for cold grinders and other choices next time my schedule coincides with their 10am to 4pm hours of operation. The Meatball Sandwich: in the picture below it is fairly plain in outward appearance but man is the Italian bread great! The meatballs themselves are broken up in a rich tomato sauce. This helps you eat it, but I also needed a fork to scoop up the overboard passengers. Compared to the competition below, 3.5/5-stars. Subway: big fail and fake tasting. 2-stars. Quiznos: better than Subway, but tastes uninspired and mass produced. 2.5-stars. Isabella's (Redlands): lunch only, fresh baked bread with plump moist and well seasoned balls, excellent sauce and cheese ratio. 4-stars. read more

I stumbled upon this place when I was searching for an Italian restaurant in this area while I'm in training for work. Please keep in mind I really tried to like this place but I did not! I was have a craving for sausage and peppers, how difficult could this be? Well first off, I called this in to ensure I picked this up in a timely manner, since I only have a 45 min lunch break. I pulled up and it's a cute little house, ample parking. I approached the counter and I let lady know I'm picking up my order, so I paid and waited. After a few minutes I got my little bag, nice and hot. As I opened it, it looked small for the $10 I paid, just the sandwich no drink, no chips. I was very disappointed to see that the sausage was a patty. I was so disappointed. It was also bland and not good at all. I will never go back. read more

The ONLY reason that this isn't five stars, is for the fact that if you are craving a delicious sandwich after 4pm or on the weekend, you're out of luck. They only open on weekdays and close before dinner time. Aside from the limited hours of operation, this joint has amazing sandwiches. Try the mafia or club on garlic bread and you will be a fan too. So fresh, large portions, and a friendly team of individuals who eagerly provide assistance with the menu. There's pizza and pasta as well, but I've yet to try those. Top the meal off with one of the house made cannoli, which are to die for, and you've got yourself a meal. read more

I have been going to Antones since the late 70's and have loved every sandwich I have eaten with the exception of the last 2 visits. Got my usual order, came home and ate and felt like the bread was different. Kind of wrote it off as maybe it was just me. Then a few weeks later my husband brought home food for our entire family and EVERYONE agreed that the bread was not the same. I actually only ate half. Whats going on? I had been to Antone's back in high school and had completely forgotten about it until realizing that it was one of a few Italian places close to my office. It's a family run place that has that family feel when going inside. The smell of marinara sauce permeates the dining room. It was lunch so I had the beef sandwich with mushroom, peppers and cheese. Absolutely an awesome sandwich. But a messy sandwich too. Be prepared to use lots of napkins. Cant wait to try their pasta dishes. read more

Wow! I had a turkey sandwich on Thursday that I am still thinking about! The bread is so fresh and just slightly powdery flour on top. Obviously fresh baked daily. All the ingredients were top notch but the sauce.....I could drink it! It is a red wine vinegar dressing that I actually dipped the sandwich in it was soooooo GOOD! Just enough seasoning. Got to give a shout out to one of Riverside's finest family owned and run eatery! Antone's on Brockton Ave has been serving the greatest grinders for many years. The homemade bread is the best I have ever had, the meats and cheeses are always fresh. I started eating at Antone's back in the "60's when Tony and Mary Verani owned and operated the restaurant. Roseann took over when her parents no longer ran the restaurant. Now her son Casey, is running the operations. Casey has managed to continue the same great service, and better yet, the quality of the food!! So if you haven't been there in a while or you have never been to Antone's, I highly recommend you do so. The meatball grinder on toasted garlic roll is my favorite.
