Backstreet Restaurant is hands down THE BEST deli shop in the entire Inland Empire. No question. The moment you arrive, it feels like stepping into a classic storybook setting. The place has this timeless charm with trees, a cute garden atmosphere, and cozy outdoor seating that makes you forget you're even in Riverside for a second. It honestly feels like dining in another era while eating some of the best comfort food around. Their French dip is unreal, easily the best I've had in the nation. Very quaint neighborhood sandwich place in the courtyard of a former residential property. The service is very friendly and the food is prepared in front of you. There is no indoor seating but there is plenty of shaded seating. However, when it's hot, it's hot - even with shade. I love the sandwiches and salads. On my salads, I added pastrami on top. I paid $20 for a bland tuna sandwich on bland rye, no toaster to give the soft bread some texture, no sandwich toppings like lettuce, onion, tomato... they don't have them. They offer mediocre sides and a salad bar with pickles, pasta salad, etc. I wish this place could just make a good sandwich instead of offering these sides that are just ok. Strangely, the place is popular amongst retirees who probably go for the ambiance and great service. Location is 100% beautiful but the food is not. I've been till many years to go to backstreet and never had the chance to until today. I found nothing five star about it. I ordered the house special which was roast beef and pastrami on a sourdough bread that was not toasted. My husband was ordered a roast beef and my daughter a ham sandwich very not anything to go back to the pasta with slimy and tasteless the potato salad did not like the texture. I'm not sure where the hype is. I bought three sandwiches and a pie and four drinks came out to $88. I could've made a better sandwich at home without a slimy texture or un toasted bread. I will continue to go to simple Simon, I understand people had different taste buds but this was not mine. I would invest in some spices seasoning and maybe suggest toasting bread for certain sandwiches. The banana cream pie tasted like instant banana pudding did not feel it was homemade. I didn't find the ingredients for the pie to be high-quality. The servers were very nice. The receptionist or cashier also polite. I do not take any of their hard work unseen. I politely asked, "a whole one please". She replied "this is a whole one". I was straight up shocked at what was happening. But I was too embarrassed to question or cancel my order, because there were people standing closely behind me. The sandwich comes with one side, I chose the cole slaw. I get to the cashier, and she says "it'll be $21.00". I was like, huh? She said "yah, it's a hot sandwich, so it's more". It would've been somewhat understandable, if the sandwich was worth that price, either in taste, size, or both. Aside from the small size of the actual sandwich. The cole slaw, while looking pretty, was very under seasoned and lacking in flavor in general. The beef was tender and juicy, but also very mild in flavor. The Au Jus was very bland and weak. And sadly, the bread was a little on the dry side. In all fairness,the service was very good, very friendly and very polite. I couldn't have asked for better service. But ultimately, it's the food that matters. Anyone that knows me, knows that I have absolutely no problem paying a higher price for premium food, drink and, product. Hands down, my favorite sandwich in Riverside. I've been coming here since I was a kid and is still great. My favorite thing to order is a Woody Allen on an onion roll. It has corned beef and pastrami. The mustard and the Swiss cheese compliments it very well. Not only is the sandwich amazing, but so is their potato salad. Very delicious! I always pile my plate high with bread and butter pickles and of course their pasta salad which is amazing. Both come free with your order. The homemade banana cream pie here is the best I've ever had. It's a must! The only criticism would be the same as every other food place now - the prices have gone up so much! For the sandwich, a coke (refillable), and a slice of pie I was sitting at about $26. I suppose this is normal now.
