Been here a few times now and haven't been disappointed yet. The sandwiches are very big as are the individual slices of pizza. There's a great choice of toppings for individual slices which are ready to go (after a quick heat up), too. The freshly baked chocolate chip cookies are wonderful and probably better than any other local place I can think of right now. Today I got an eggplant parmigiana sub and posted a picture. The bread is toasted very well so if you prefer soft bread you need to let them know. The eggplant is not heavily breaded. In fact, it's more of a light egg/flour coating which makes for a soft and more flavorful product. The mozzarella was melted perfectly and had just the right amount of saltiness. The sandwich was too big for lunch so I took half home for dinner. Not bad for $7! read more

Antonio's is a great place to pick up a sub or panini. My coworkers and I have ordered to-go from here hundreds of times, over the many years that I've worked in Hamden. The panini sandwiches are usually my first choice. For me, one sandwich usually becomes 2 or 3 meals. Even cold the next day, they're great. Just yesterday, I had the chicken, fresh mozzarella, pesto & roasted peppers. All of the ingredients were fresh, and tasted wonderful. The panini was a little burnt, but it didn't bother me. I prefer my bread a little more toasted than most. My only complaint, and my word of caution is this; once you get your sandwich to where you're going to eat it, remove the paper plate that they wrap it on. If you wait till the end of the meal, to wrap the other half (believe me, you will), you'll be pulling paper plate pieces off of the bread before you can eat it again. Not sure how long this place has been here. My parents went a few times before and ranted and raved about it to me, so of course they had to take me. Of course the day they bring me, wasn't the best days. Food was okay, I ordered shrimp scampi because I'm always trying to find a shrimp scampi better than Napoli's. This one was very close, even looking almost exactly the same, but the sauce wasn't quite right. Both my mom and I actually thought our dishes tasted a little sour (we kept eating and didn't get sick or anything, so maybe just the way it smelled that day), but I still took mine home and ate my leftovers 2 days later. Definitely would love to come back and try the Panini's or sandwiches, since that is what they are supposed to be famous for. Would love to try pizza too. Solid place to grab a sub..or dinner. Came for a quick take out lunch, was pleased to see the sub shop is more like a small restaurant, I will be back to try a sit down dinner here, since the menu and my lunch choice was so promising. Got the broccoli rabe and sausage on a sub with cherry peppers, the thing was massive, and stuffed with the good stuff! They forgot the provolone I requested, but it was still excellent. You wouldn't think this place is as yummy as it is. The quality has consistently been above and beyond since I started coming here 3+ years ago. Here's a little break down- The food: always fresh and HUGE plates. The pasta dishes are enormous, with perfectly cooked pasta (never over cooked) and the sauces are consistently on point. The bake their own bread and it's fabulous. The wraps are bigger than your head and completely filled with deliciousness of your choice, not just extra layers of tortilla. The pizza is delicious also. It's not New Haven but it's a good substitute. The service: First of all, who doesn't love BYOB? They are always happy to pop a cork or open a bottle for patrons if need be. At Antonio's its their policy for the customer to go up to the counter, order and pay for their food, and then the waitress will come and serve your food. My family has been coming here weekly in a large group (6-10 people) and they allow us to order with a waitress and pay at the end of our meal like a traditional restaurant. My Point is that they're very accommodating and happy to do so. The price: for what you're getting it seems like you're paying little to nothing. A pasta dish big enough to eat for three separate meals costs about 15$ WITH protein involved. Can't beat that. Recommendations: the bruschetta is my FAVORITE. They make it fresh everytime and is totally to die for on top of their home made bread. I'm totally convinced that the chicken orzo soup will cure every cold or flu like illness known to man. The Bolognese is also amazing every single time. If you want to have a really delicious dinner and not spend a lot of money Antonio's is most definitely the place to go. Not only is everyone there super friendly and treat you like family, but DAMN can they make an awesome ________! Everything (and I mean EVERYTHING) from Antonio's does NOT disappoint - especially my fave - their Chicken Cutlet & Broc Rabe Panini. Their panini bread is fresh and homemade and their rabes are incredible (hard to say for many places). Arriving to the restaurant I excepted the food to be the typical fast-food Italian "chow" that one would often think of: heavy on the stomach after eating, crumbly breads, and the usual American-Italian charm. Flies. Flies everywhere. We were surrounded by flies that were landing on us and the food. If that doesn't enhance your appetite, the silverware had spots and pieces of food on them. We ordered Moz-sticks and were given entrée plates that took up the entire table for our finger food. Then the entrées came. The sauce under the chicken on my fiancées plate was SO oily, that you could see the oil separating from the sauce itself. The food glistened with oil, so much so I could have shaved my face in the reflection. The sandwich I ordered was giant. I had to eat it with a fork and knife because when trying to pick it up, it fell apart. Back to the flies. It seemed they had built a colony (church, hospital, and market) around the inner parts of the window. I counted 13 flies around our table -at once, not over the course of the meal. My fiancée had to return her food because it tasted terrible, I started feeling crumby from my pesto chicken sandwich myself. Just as she was about to go back to her salad, ((that she had moved off to the side while choking down only two bites of the oil chicken)) the only decent thing we ordered, flies rose up out of the salad like a wave of arrows and eclipsed the very sun. It was like that scene from 300. As we were leaving the chef asked what was wrong, and when my fiancée told him that she didn't like the chicken very much he AGREED that chicken was "eh". If you're describing the meal you made for a paying customer as "eh", then there is clearly something wrong. We left feeling queasy and went somewhere else to settle our stomachs. I see a lot of positive reviews of this place, so maybe we should have stuck with pizza, but you're as only as strong as your weakest link, especially as a eatery. 1 Star. read more

I was looking for something quick, reasonable, fast, tasty and well rated at 3:30 (after a lotnof Delis start to close) I found this place. I think I would probably rate it a 3.5 but I am maybe being generous at 4. First off it was nice to be greeted so well. Sirs and Thank yous go a long way. I ordered te chicken parmasan on a sub. It is a good portion but not massive. About what you would expect and hope for. The roll was way too toasted, like hard to bite into and it just started falling apart all over. The chicken was great. Very well done. The sauce is clearly freshly made but is lacking just a bit. It's just not quite there but close. Perhaps I just did not get enough sauce because I never felt any sauce was falling off of it. Lots of cheese. This was good. Restroom is clean. Overall clean and quiet environment despite gaving some crowd. Overall pretty good but not great. I would not seek this place out but I would not avoid it. It's been 4 months since my last review and nothing has changed except now they have FEWER staff there taking orders. I called in my order again and arrived at 11:30 to pick it up. There is still no "phone order only" line. So I had to wait in the regular line, and wait and WAIT. They had ONE girl taking orders from the people in line AND taking phone orders. When she took phone orders, she completely stopped taking line orders. One phone call was literally 7 minutes long. SEVEN MINUTES!?!?! And the phone just continues ringing and she is the only one answering. So the line moves at a crawl. Even though I only had 3 people in front of me, I didn't get up to the counter for 20 minutes. And this was at 11:30. Imagine how this will be at noon, when swarms of people show up. Food is decent, but I'm done with this place. My time is more valuable and it's absolutely ridiculous that people who call in their orders have to wait in the regular line. THAT'S WHY WE ARE CALLING IT IN... so we don't have to WAIT. This place needs a serious reorganization. They need to make processes flow more efficiently. Until then, they've seen the last of my business. What a shame. It used to be a great place 2 owners ago. I am always looking to have a good slice of Pizza, ALWAYS!!! I stopped by ANTONIOS ON RT 5 IN NORTH HAVEN, and I was taken back. I am a big fan of simpler is best and have to say that Antonios is an example of this. Let me elaborate... I remember when I was younger the pizza was simple and delicious as it should be. I believe that I found that place, ANTONIO'S!! I stopped for a slice and had more than a pleasant experience. I chose 2 slices, 1 pepperoni and 1 mozz. Immediately upon leaving with the slices I sat in my car, opened the box, then couldn't wait to take a bite. The mozz was first and my first bit took me back to my younger days and that taste overcame me. PHENOMENAL TASTING PIZZA!! The sauce was simple, just the tomatoes, maybe a little salt, but not too much more than that. The mozz was delicious, whole milk and smooth flavor. Together with the super-thin crust, this is true New Haven-style, and 1 of the best I have ever eaten. from first to the last bite there was nothing short of AWESOME!! I then had the pepperoni to eat, I couldn't wait. This was not as good as the plain mozz. Let me explain, the pizza was good, but in this writers opinion, there were too many slices of pepperoni on the slice. It made the pie a little oily, but it was still tasty. The pepperoni overcame the slice. I ate the slice and that was that. As I was waiting for the slices as they were heating up, I saw some other pies in the case, the ones with toppings were nothing short of generous, I think a little too generous. SO again, in this writer's opinion, a little less on the toppings would make the slices nothing short of perfect. I believe the overage of toppings per slice overcame the flavor. SO if I had a do-over, I'd do 2 plain mozz. If I were to order a full pie I'd have to ask for not so generous on the toppings, but would always order a plain mozz in any event. Heard great things about the grinders here so I went recently. Ordered a philly cheese with onions and peppers. First off, the cheese was cold, grinder roll untoasted and cold, meat was so well done it tasted like shoe leather, and the worst of all? There was so much grease dripping out the bottom of the roll I had to hold it over my plate to contain it! It was as if the grill was loaded with grease/oil when cooking the steak. I've eaten something delicious here, and ordered the same thing two months later and it was borderline inedible. The only thing I've had here that is consistently good that I can recommend is their scungilli salad. Needs a little extra lemon, but other than that it's quite tasty! This is handsdown my favorite spot in the area for pizza, stuffed bread, sandwiches, etc. Stuffed breads are absolutely fantastic and I bring them to almost all my family parties. They have great paninis, my favorite is the chicken pesto. I would say that most of Antonio's business is probably take-out orders, however they do have seating and a wait-staff. It is BYOB, which is great and fairly uncommon for the area. The decor is simple, but the place is kept immaculate. It gets busy almost every night, but especially Thursday-Sat evenings, so plan for this when ordering to-go. I tend to add at least 10 or 15 mins to the time they give me when placing an order as I have had to wait a few times (still worth it though). My family and I like to come to Antonio's when we are in the mood to have dinner out but don't want to break the bank at a fancy place or get crappy pre-made frozen food from a chain restaurant. Everything here is fresh, authentic and delicious! The portions are large so you definitely get more bang for your buck. They have everything from pizzas to subs to salads to pasta dinners. The entrees come with a soup or salad which is always nice and they have different specials on the board every day!
