Honestly...don't really understand the great reviews but maybe it was an off night. I placed a pick up order for the karaage chicken combo, the fries were good...but unfortunately the chicken wasn't. There was a lotttt of fat in many of the chicken pieces and the quality of the meat wasn't that great. The rice that comes with it was pretty good. Other than that, I wouldn't try this again just because of how much fat there was in the chicken. read more

A new challenger has entered the ring for best fried chicken in LA with the opening of Anzu. I know these are probably fighting words, but after your first bite of their Karaage, you will understand. The crust is thin and crisp, the chicken is impossibly tender and juicy. Seriously, you will be haunted by how good this is. I wasn't too sure what to expect ordering their Umami Fried Potato, but these fries are a surprising winner as well. They look like they are of the breaded/battered variety but they taste like very well seasoned potato! Glassy on the outside, creamy on the inside, you definitely want these too. Prices are reasonable and service is fast and friendly. You need to check this place out, whether you are coming here for a full meal or if you are feeling peckish and need a little something to hold you over while waiting on those insane lines for some of those other establishments down the street. Anzu is one of our favorite take out places for dinner. We get karaage meals, fries and occasionally the loco moco. Easy quick parking by telling the attendant you are picking up to-go food. We don't like eating there since it's a tiny outdoor food stall type restaurant with a few stools and chairs under a tent. Remember they are closed Tuesdays and closed between lunch and dinner from 3:30-5:30pm. read more

I live in the neighborhood and noticed that this place opened up in the old Ketchy's space. I got their 5 piece karaage snack (pretty filling, though) and their umami fries. Yes!! Chicken karage combo was bomb. The chicken was juicy and crispy. The dipping sauces were on point. The fries were amazing, seasoned so well and super crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. They may not have a ton on their menu, but when you do something so well, you don't need to. Their keema curry is one of the best I had in LA!!! It is not easy to find a good curry. All curry restaurants I've tried lacks some taste, but this one one just perfect. Definately come back for that. Also tried teriyaki avo burger, it is little bit on heavy side for me, buns are butter grilled, but it added flavorful taste to it. The meat was good and substantial and they were fried crisply, not greasy at all but, somehow the flavor was just ok for me. I had it with the ponzu sauce so I was looking for a traditional flavor. I got the fried chicken by itself and it was great - freshly fried with the choice of a few different sauces, and at a good price! You can also get your chicken with different sides if you want a more filling meal. The place is quite small with only a few tables outside and a window to order. Given my experience in Japan, I would rate this restaurant very high. I have picked up Loco moco bento(Salisbury steak with Demi grace sauce), Karaage chicken (fried chicken Japanese style with soy sauce, hint of garlic mixed in with the batter) and ginger pork bento with amazing taste. First of all, they are very light using very fine frying oil. This is very important because it brings out the good flavor of the cooking and allows you to eat continuously. Second, the sauce the Anzu restaurant uses is very well designed. The Hamburg sauce in the loco moco uses its own unique brown sauce mixed with variety of seasoning.The taste reminded me of the very fine sauce in many of the restaurants in Tokyo. The light Karaage batter is a result of years of experience in making the fried chicken in Tokyo. Because hundreds of restaurants compete in Japan, the taste must be refined to win and the chef certainly imported such taste from Japan. The ginger pork balances soy sauce and the sugar so fine that I don't need water to go with it. Finally, the price is just fine. With all other restaurants raising price because of higher growth in economy, most of the bento in this restaurant is under 10 dollar with enough food. The big 10 piece Karaage chicken was priced about 10 dollars and was very filling. I saw many Americans buying the chicken with Ponzu, tartar, or sriracha sauce If you want the best chicken and Japanese bento, this is the place to get a good hot meal cooked to order. The fried chicken is crunchy AND juicy. Pretty cheap too for the amount of food you get. The outside area is just a small patio with a few tables and chairs, so be prepared to take your food to go. I had the fried chicken special with fries and it was all tasty, especially with the sriracha dipping sauce. A welcome gem in Sawtelle's predominantly noodle central.

Anzu is like Chick-Fil-A's sophisticated, distant cousin...and I mean that in the best possible way. Anzu specializes in fried Japanese chicken, which is called karaage (pronounced: ka-raah-gay). Karaage is essentially chicken nuggets, but the *best*, *juiciest*, *most flavorful* chicken nuggets you've ever had. I know the previous sentence sounds a bit ironic, but it's not. Anzu serves a few other food items such a hamburgers, but I didn't look too closely so I don't recall anything else. There are various karaage order sizes, and you can order a la carte, or with a side salad and rice. I ordered an a la carte ten piece, and I was *full.* Each order comes with one or more dips (depending on the order size). I chose the kewpie mayo (I'm not usually a mayo fan, but I'll go for kewpie and appreciate that they serve Japanese mayo!), and a sweet chili sauce. Both dips complimented the karaage, but honestly you don't need it. The karaage is moist, and has a good ratio of skin to meat. The skin is flavorful, and mildly sweet. Service is friendly, and prices are fair. There's seating for about ten people on their patio, so if you're in a group, be prepared get cozy. Anzu is a gem - I'll be back! read more

Small, homely place with just an outside seating area that serves more as a takeout waiting room than a sit-down restaurant. The food was phenomenal. Karaage chicken had a very light batter and comes with the choice of 4 dips. The best for both the fries and karaage chicken was the sriracha mayo. The fries were lightly salted and slightly spicy, fried to a perfect, golden crisp. The karaage chicken was easy on the crunch but the moisture was honestly out of control. Not a single fiber of chicken was dry and it was so incredibly delicious. Whatever you saw with the chicken was what you got. It's not half batter like most fried chicken you get. The curry dog was fantastic with such an interesting combination with seaweed. The keema curry was delicious, but I wish they gave more meat and less rice with it. Nevertheless, it's a great place for casual eating and to-go so make sure to stop by! It's a pity that the restaurant's a little off to the side from Sawtelle, I think it deserves much more foot traffic. I sincerely wish this business the best. They truly deserve it read more
