Customer service second to NONE! I called ahead and spoke with Eryk regarding a specific pistol. He was upfront and honest and very helpful. when I came into the store to look at the weapon, he was even more helpful. He gave me info and even further proof that I was purchasing quality, he showed me it was his weapon of choice for daily carry. Most guns stores have the "holier than thou" attitudes however, both Eryk and Zane were super knowledgeable of the current laws in CA and answered all questions regarding changes to the current laws (restrictions/bans/etc.) which made me, the customer feel right at home. Purpose: I was there to buy a gun. they could have easily just started the DOJ/CA background check/etc taken my money and sent me on my way, but they went out of their way to assist, answering other questions regarding AR's and pistols. Additionally, they showed me potential upgrades to the weapon I was purchasing and gave me the pros and cons of certain brands. Where most gun stores/dealers would gladly have you buy extra junk or parts you don't need or want, they gave me honest opinions even if it didn't benefit them. I started coming to this place after it first opened. Things have changed. Years ago, I brought my shotgun in to have some aftermarket add-ons installed. When I came to pick it up, the guy at the counter told me that he "had to mill" on the shotgun to get the accessories attached. I was angry but what was I going to do? It made no sense engaging them because he could not undo what he had done. So now years later, I decided to walk in with a friend because we were having lunch close by. And I joked with the guys behind the counter, calling myself, a disgruntled former customer. They did not find it funny. On a whim I bought a tac light for a compact semi auto handgun. I didn't need it nor was I shopping for it. But the guy behind the counter told me that it was the proper light for that gun. Not true. That light came with a bunch of small attachments called "keys" which would affix the light to the accessory rail of many different models of handgun. Which was something that the employee neglected to tell me. But in the end, that is my fault... I believed this guy when I should not have and allowed him to sell me this janky tac light. Had I known that the light was not specifically made for my gun I would've never bought it. I think most people would not which is why he left that detail out. So once I realized that this was not the right light for my gun I called AO Sword. The person who answered the phone, the same guy that sold me the light, asked me if I had used the proper key to attach the light. I told him that I had not, and asked if I returned if he would show me how to attach it. He agreed to help so I returned. He took my gun and the light and proceeded to walk to the back area of the shop, which is employees only. I told him that I wanted to watch him attach the light. Without stopping or looking back at me, he said "I don't want to lose any of the parts" and just kept walking. So I'm angry because I don't know what he's going to do with my gun and given my previous experience I did not trust him. But beyond that, why he thinks that he can do whatever he wants to do to my gun, and completely disregard what I had said, was maddening. But I just kept my cool knowing that there's no way to win in the situation whatsoever. He was gone for more than 10 minutes which is a long time given the fact that I do not trust this person. He came back with the tac light attached to the gun and showed me how he did it. According to him, he had to figure out which was the proper key and then was able to attach the light. This key system was never something that the designer of the accessory rail contemplated and I did not want it. So I asked the person behind the counter if I could just return the light. He told me that he would have to consult with the manager, and the manager was not in. He asked me if I could come back the following day when the manager would be in. I'm already seeing where this is going. I told this guy that I'm here now and the light can literally just go back on the shelf. He told me that he would call the manager of the shop and ask if he could accept the return. After the phone call, he told me that the manager said that because the package had been opened, he would have to make the decision in person and that I should return the following day. I literally held up the packaging and showed how the packaging could just be easily snapped closed. But it didn't matter. So the following day, I called the manager and expressed my displeasure with everything that had happened. He told me to come back to the shop and he would see what could be done. But he would not tell me that he would accept the light back in return. So I told him that I was not going to go all the way back to the shop just the chance that he was going to accept the light in return. And because the shop is a significant distance from me. I said I would just make the charge back to my credit card which I did and I lost. So AO Sword, enjoy your $250 win. I'm pissed off at how completely petty and bullying you are. I will never return and I will be outspoken to anyone who will listen how your shop should be completely avoided. It happens that I and many people I know have disposable income and are frequent customers of these types of shops. If I was able to leave negative starts I would. I have purchased items from David Chong's store previously with zero issues. I placed an order for a firearm on Apr 22nd 2020 and paid 80% in cash, the rest on a credit card. After a few months, I sent an email asking about status. I received a nasty email saying, "they do not manufacture what I was looking for and I would be notified when it was in stock." Fast forward ELEVEN MONTHS LATER March 30th 2020; I sent two more emails questioning the status and my dissatisfaction with their lack of communication. I received an email dissertation from David saying he's, " not there to hold my hand through the process and that I was responsible for contacting them." I stated I wanted a refund and he typed I would have to pay a 25% cancellation fee. For what? The privilege of holding onto my money for 11 months and being rude to me? I let David know when and what time I would be there for my refund. Arriving at the store, David was nowhere to be found and I explained to the staff member the situation. There was a check, minus the 25% fee deducted waiting for me. Mind you, I paid cash and used a credit card for the remainder, not by check... I asked the employee what his thought was on holding my money for 11 months and still having to pay a fee for no goods or services received, he didn't care either but was at least polite and pretended to be empathetic. I will NEVER patronize this company ever again and I will let everyone I know or meet to never give David Chong or AO Sword even a nickel of their money! Very unprofessional, rude and unacceptable. I am an African-American disabled Air Force Officer and I was looking to purchase a new handgun, specifically a Glock 19 or Beretta. However, I was met with immediate poor service by the staff there, in particular, David, the store owner. Not only was there a one (1) hour and a half wait to even get in, but once I did get in, none of the staff wore face masks. Further, David, the store owner, limited the number of patrons to six (6), but had no sense of urgency or concern to help customers in a timely manner. It should also be noted that I only went to this store because my friend (a white male) recommended it. Nevertheless, I was met with a combative tone and attitude by David, the store owner, who unnecessarily interjected himself into my shopping experience with snide comments. I don't usually notice or comment on the personality of salespersons, but this store owner had such a twisted and self-absorbed way of speaking that he is practically a walking case study of narcissism and self-delusion. For instance, as I was completing the state required firearm safety certificate test David, the store owner, again interjected and instructed me to move to the back of the store to complete the firearm safety certificate test even though the direct salesperson that I was working with had previously told me that I could complete the test at the counter while she went to get the gun that I was purchasing. David, the store owner, without prompting, said that he was "overruling" her instruction to me, and was now requiring that I complete the firearm safety certificate test in the other room without any explanation or rationale. In short, David, the store owner, just gave me an "order" to move even though he provided no reason for why he was requesting me to do so. It was just something that he wanted and ordered me to do just because he was the store owner. When I asked him why, David, the store owner, angrily said, "Is there a problem?!" Then before I could respond David, the store owner, demanded the firearm safety certificate test paper back and said, "We will not be selling you a firearm today." I want it to be known, that I do not write this review because I want to lambast a business owner nor do I have an issue with how a person runs his or her business. The reason I felt compelled to write this review is to inform future patrons so they know what to expect. This is the same thing that I would've done if a young airman came to me and asked for advice on what to expect at a new base and any relevant local Air Force instructions. When you patronize a store you should be well aware of who runs it and how they run it. I, for one, do not recommend that any person of color or any current active duty or retired military personnel patronize his store because he doesn't live by the same code of conduct that I dedicated my life to uphold or hold to be true. That's honesty, sincerity, honor, respect and integrity. I don't usually post reviews of businesses, but after my experience with this place, I feel compelled to share and hopefully save others from the absolute B.S. I dealt with. #1 The prices here suck. #2 This is the type of place where you feel like you're bothering the staff by coming in the door. I bought a used gun from them that I've been searching for for a long time due to the manufacturer no longer making the specific model. After I filled out all the paperwork and paid in full on the spot I was told they just got this particular firearm in the day before as part of a collection they bought and they wouldn't be able to "sell it" for 30 days, and then at the end of the 30 days they could do the federal paperwork and I would still have to wait the 10 days after that to pick it up. On day 30, I called to check the status and nobody could answer my questions about the status. I was told the manager would call me back with the info. A week later, I called again and was told the original seller still hadn't completed the paperwork and it should be done by the end of that week. A week later I called and they told me the federal paperwork was just finished by the original seller and they would start my part of the federal paperwork the following Monday. All in all it took 2 months to be able to finally pick up my gun. As for the customer service, I felt like I was not wanted in the store because I'm not part of their cool kids club. I completely expect them to try and bash me as a customer for my review, as every negative review I've seen posted they bashed the reviewer as being the problem, even going as far as calling a military veteran "a disgrace to the uniform" in one reply. Had I read reviews before going into this place, I wouldn't have spent my money with them. Now that I've experienced this store first hand, I wouldn't spend another penny of my money or second of my time here. I had higher hopes for a small shop, but even that big corporate place over in santee by Costco and Walmart has better prices and way better customer service. I bought a rifle here several years ago. When I fired it, it would misfeed (stovepipe) every 2-5 rounds. I took it back, and they said "send it to the manufacturer, they'll help you." I did that. The manufacturer said "Tested, fired, no problems" and returned it. I fired it again and had the same issues. Yes, I tried different ammo - 5.56, .223, Federal, American Eagle... The gun didn't work properly. I took it back again to the store and asked what they could do for me. They didn't offer any solutions. I asked if they could sell it on consignment. The salesperson - who had already been fairly apathetic in every conversation - said to me, "Well I can't take a broken gun and sell it to someone." ... when that's EXACTLY WHAT THEY DID TO ME. I've had a bad taste in my mouth about this place for a long time. I suggest going somewhere else, like Discount Gun Mart. They're way friendlier, more helpful, and they don't have any attitude. I must reluctantly give a 1 star review. I say reluctantly because I am a business owner and I get how hard it can be. I am also a customer, and I was not treated right. In fact, this place was horrible. I dropped my Ruger 45 pistol off around September of 2016 for a repair. I was expecting a month or two wait and a 50-100 dollar bill. Come Christmas time I started calling to find our what was up. Three times I was told they would check and see and get back to me, but nobody ever did. The forth time I called I explained that I really needed my gun and would be willing to come pick it up and move on, no hard feelings. Once again, " I will check with the gunsmith and get back to you ". Nothing. No call. No email. So, I go in and politely ask for my gun. No problem. I got it back, but here is where it goes from too busy to deal to complete b.s. The owner, a nice enough guy, comes out and says he couldn't find the replacement part. Moreover, I would never find the part and would join the ranks of P90 owners with broken magazine release Springs and useless guns. Something did not feel right. I went and did a Internet search and found out that true, the spring was discontinued. But, in the same page of search results was an ebay link to a guy stocking Springs. Bam, before I left the parking lot I had two Springs ordered. A couple of YouTube videos later on how to replace the part I did it. The whole time I was working on the gun I was getting more and more annoyed that my gun had sat there for 4-5 months and the part was readily available. Meanwhile, the whole time I got a deranged former employee stalking me. I went to the city for a restraining order but you know what? I NEEDED my gun. Like I said, on the phone over all the calls only to be lied to. Here's the deal; if you are going good to lie, make it a good one. Or just say, I can't deal with the b.s. repair because I'm too busy making rifles and that's what pays the rent. read more

BEWARE! As a new firearm purchaser I chose to rely on sales people that were seemingly experienced with a new gun owner and a reputable business which was well established and what I I believed to have a good reputation. Before purchasing, I went there 3 times searching for just the right gun that would work for me. After careful consideration based on professional recommendation from the sales associate who convinced me that the gun she recommended was the best model for me and personally recommended because she used that same gun. Fast forward, 2-months... Today, I went for my first new user training and learned that the gun was way too powerful, the kick from a snub nose (short) revolver is tremendous, which injured my right hand. I took the gun back expecting good customer service. After talking to one of the original sales person and another associate they called out the manager who told me "THIS WAS NOT A GOOD CHOICE FOR ME and asked "WHO PUSHED YOU INTO THIS GUN". I was then told there are only 2 choices because they will not give a full refund according to the "contract" and I have to pay 30% restocking or leave my gun on consignment. The gun was shot by me 4 times and the instructor 3 times, that's it! I was willing to get a full credit to buy something else from them today. Also, my husband planned on a new purchase next week from AO Sword. But they would not offer me a full credit. This is just "business stupid". Since I was sold a product that clearly was not suitable I expected a full refund/credit. Additionally, my husband was going to buy another firearm next week from them that he has an eye on for himself. I am now suck with a firearm along with 350 rounds of EXPENSIVE ammo that can only be used in a .38 special. My husband and I really hoped to become gun enthusiasts and go to the range as a new experience together. Therefore, if you plan on buying a weapon and are a new gun owner, go somewhere else, like a shooting range with professionals and a place you can try out the firearm FIRST because AO Sword will not take provide you with good service. Too sad they lost 2 lifetime customers for a (retail cost) $150 bucks, again, business stupid. read more

I was extremely let down with my experience with these guys. I went in expecting to find a bunch of aholes, who have anger issues that reflect in their customer service. Instead I was treated like a valued customer. No arrogant, know it all attitudes to be found. What a gyp. Seriously, why couldn't I get a little bit of the "old" plastic gun discrimination like the other El Cajon gun store? Honestly these guys were great. I went into AO after a buddy recommended them for Cerakote work. The craftsmanship they displayed with his shotgun was outstanding, so I figured I would give them a try. I took in my stripped Glock frame and in less then two weeks walked away a satisfied customer. They were definitely able to fulfill my less than standard Cerakote order. From what I could see from the case, their prices on firearms are actually pretty competitive compared to other San Diego shops. They also were eager to answer my questions with regards to a hard to find pistol. More importantly they made sure that I left their shop with all the information I needed. The best thing about the shop is the lack of ego, which I think plagues a lot of shops, well, that and a clientele of a bunch of "door kickers". About a month ago I was looking for a California legal attachment for my AR called a Kingpin. I had already called around looking for one at the 3 closest gun stores I usually frequent. A friend recommended I give them a call as they specialize in rifles, or so he was told. I checked up on yelp for reviews and they had a good report, so I gave them a ring. I was informed by a man named David or Dan, I can't remember, that they do not have that particular brand in stock, but have a different brand pin that serves the same exact purpose. I told him I'd be at their store in 30min. After he gave me the name of the brand (Juggarnaut, I think)I quickly researched to see if it was compatible and of sound build quality. It actually sounded better than the Kingpin. Upon getting to the store maybe 35 min later max, that's when the problem started. I explained I had just called and was looking to get the pin recommended to me. Without looking around or asking anyone, the salesman said they didn't have one in stock. I was taken aback by his curt and rapid response, as if I was causing some kind of inconvenience to him. I told the salesman I talked to Dan or Dave, and he specifically told me they had one in stock. Again, the salesman repeated his first response, like a robot. I asked if I could speak to the person I spoke to on the phone, and was told that nobody by that name works there. He then turned around and started asking another customer if they needed help. He didn't ask if I wanted to order one, apologize for the inconvenience, or even seem like he wanted to be there. Not wanting to cause a scene or get riled up over something out of my control, I decided the best thing to do was leave my experience here. Before leaving, I looked around the store a little and dialed the number I called earlier, just to make sure I didn't make a mistake. I walked out of the store as the salesman picked up the phone and said hello multiple times, as I just wanted to confirm I'm not crazy. Last week I was with friends and we get to talking about guns and I bring up my story. My buddies cousin tells me to stay away from that place, as the owner DAVID, is a lying snake. Turns out my friends cousin waited months for a part that never came, and was given the run around. DAVID also had the nerve to tell him he was holding his gun for too long and it's taking up space. "Asian dude with a goatee," I ask? "Yup," he told me. Same dude that answered the phone, lied and provided absolutely no service. Great work DAVID. I called here to inquire about the Megafin Featureless AR Grip on January 13, 2021. Spoke to Bryce and he said it was $59.95 or may have said $59.99 when I asked, "Why so much?", his response was, "Because we are paying more for accessories these days". Price gouging? Possibly, since this items MSRP is $39.95. AO's markup is around 35% OVER the manufacturers MSRP. I visited AO Sword Firearms on Monday, 11/30/2020, and wanted to buy 9mm ammunition. The salesman said that he would not sell me ammunition without buying a firearm. I then went to Turners in El Cajon and bought 2 boxes without a problem. I am disappointed. I prefer to shop with a local small business when possible. Two times, AO Sword has taken my money for gunsmith services but now refuses to take my money for ammunition. I will not return. read more

I had no idea this local gun store existed until meeting the owner, David, off-site and he told me he happened to be firearms dealer. David was able to obtain a firearm which is currently very high in demand within a relatively short time. No only that, AOSF's price, while not the lowest in town, was reasonable considering that the other gun shops had waiting lists for the same firearm of up to 50 buyers long! The fact that AOSF had the high demand firearm which I wanted at a reasonable price, that combined with their outstanding customer service, almost assures I will patronize AOSF for all my gun needs in the foreseeable future. I got first class service from David, Doug, and Bryce, and would highly recommend AOSF to all of my co-workers, family, and/or friends. Way to go AOSF!!! read more

On 3/10/2022 I went in to pick up an item I purchased, some accessories and ammo. Total would have been about $800. Just before the ammo was rung up, the lady that worked there stated that the price of the ammo went up from $14.99 to $19.99 and they didn't have time to change the price. I had her call the owner. He explained that because it is behind the register, the law doesn't apply to price as marked. I could afford the extra $35 (7boxes × $5) but it is the principal of doing the right thing. I ended up putting back over half the items and went to Big5 and saved even more money. I hope the $400 loss on the stuff I put back will make them rethink about being ethical. read more

I initially went in to look around and see what was available, fully expecting to be treated like a newbie or lime I wasn't worth the time. This experience was the exact opposite. To make this an easy read, I will put my responses in list form: -The owner is a veteran as am I and he has always done right by me when it comes to honesty within a business dynamic. -Yes, turnaround time is slow BUT the sales reps tell you that up front. -AO Sword uses QUALITY parts so ordering a part off of eBay is not an option for them. However, if you yourself buy the part and take it to them to be installed, they will gladly assemble your firearm for you. -The amount of firearm knowledge under this one roof is immense and I am taken away after every conversation I have with any of the employees. -I've lived in every part of this country and AO Sword is hands down the best gun store I have ever had the pleasure of doing business with. End of story. If you are curious about this place, stop by and have a look. You aren't obligated to buy anything. Just go in there and talk to the employees, look at their stock of firearms and make the decision for yourself. Just a heads up, they get SUPER busy sometimes. "Why would a gun store with some bad reviews be busy?" Well you can figure that out can't you? THIS IS A GREAT STORE WITH A HUGE CUSTOMER BASE. Mr. Chong, the owner, answered all of my questions, made suggestions, and explained the pros and cons of one optic/attachment as opposed to another. It didn't feel like Mr. Chong was even trying to sell me anything or spend money on things I didn't need, he just wanted me to get exactly what I wanted, which goes to show that he cares about his customers and wants them to be 100% satisfied with the finished product. A while ago I went to the police station to try and find out how to know if a gun past down to me was ever registered. The officer told me to go to AO Swords down the street. I had no intentions on buying anything I only needed information. The gentleman I spoke with gave me everything I need to know even though I didn't spend one penny in the store. Long story short I now purchase all my firearms from AO Swords and in the past year I have spend about 5k with them. Yes I can shop all around town for the cheapest price but when I purchase a firearm I also want professionalism and knowledge And THAT is what I find at AO Swords! read more

Original post: you will probably not find a nicer guy selling AR's in El Cajon or anywhere. the guys are nice, knowledgeable and low pressure. they are a bit overpriced and in my case I payed extra for a complete FDE upper and got a black and tan mess. They say "oh, some guys like that" I said well, not me... For another 40 we can FDE paint your ejection port cover ...Me no thanks, won't be back. read more

Hit up David via Facebook about an airsoft trade. His confirmation was quick and he let me know the hours and location. When I showed he welcomed me warmly and with a handshake. He looked over my item, retrieved his half and asked if I had any questions. I didnt, so I was good to go. The other in the shop were great people too and if I had more time I would have hung out longer. I called one time and not again for 4 weeks. You showed how unfriendly you are in your response to my review. Reality checking a customer sounds like A1 customer service skills to me. I feel like you have anger issues and tried to bait me into an angry response with your response to my review. I have learned my lesson and will only take my guns to Clothey and sons for now on. They have done me right in the past with my Ruger P90DC. I would not let you work on a Super soaker after that experience and response. read more

I came in yesterday for the first time with my parents. This is the 6th gun shop I've been to in the last two months and I'd have to the it's the friendliest! I was helped by David, Bryce, and Brian (I think those are their names). They all greeted us with a handshake and introduced themselves to us. We happened to drive by and decided to stop in. I have been wanting to buy an AR-15 and saw how easily I could customize my own there. I ended up deciding to buy one! David talked over each piece and gave me so many options. So i went into this place and the staff were super friendly and welcoming unlike most other gun shops in SD I had been browsing. The staff and I talked and these guys really set it up. 10 days later this shop made one of the most incredible AR-15s I have ever seen and they worked with me when I wanted to change a few things before the bulid was completed. This guys very super professional and knew what they were doing. When I walked into this place they way they acted earned my business. And they made my dream gun.
