I first came here during the pandemic when there were still restrictions so I could only rate outside which at the time, was freezing lol. Now I have gotten to go inside a few times post pandemic. I have had their beer at beer festivals before coming here just didn't make it until first time last year. This brewery is located on Mellwood Ave. I read in another review there is a parking lot here but, I've never seen it. I've always parked on the street however, I've never had to walk really far. The few times I've been inside it is small but cozy in a way. There is only one bathroom on the inside, some bar seating and a few tables. They have bar snacks but no food, you can bring food or have it delivered. You will most likely pet a dog when you visit here, I have just about every time. I like seeing Sake and Hiro the brewery cats when I visit. They hang out in the brew room when the dogs are out. My favorite beer(s) is Atomic Amber and Cream nation. I've had just about all of them but those 2 are my favorite. Good beer and a great place for animal lovers to come to. read more

I recently paid my first visit to Apocalypse Brew Works and, damn, this is my kinda place! We went on a Saturday evening to a Star Trek viewing and I was, like, "Why haven't I been here before!??!". Apocalypse is very easy to get to, right off of the Mellwood exit. It's in a rather unassuming location and covers a lot more real estate than it looks like. Nestled directly off the off-ramp, you barely need to turn your steering wheel to make it into the parking lot. My first visit to any brewery starts with a flight, and then a pint or two. On this visit my flight, rather intentionally, ended with a Green Chile Wheat, which was so freaking good I had two pints of it after my flight. It's THAT good. I've always been a fan of chili infused beers and have to say, it's one of the best I've ever had. The Fallout Shelter (tap room) is aptly named and decorated in a -- you know -- fallout shelter kinda motif. A nice sized bar, 15 taps, and a little bit of snackery available for...snackerying. Outside they have a more-or-less permanent temporary tent set up. For the event we attended there was a table for the host and a couple stand-up tables (I love stand up tables). Also, a huge-ass Jenga set for your skill/amusement. The outdoor area is sizable and I can see where attending larger events here would be a blast. I imagine hundreds and hundreds...er...dozens of tables with umbrellas scattered across the land where beer lovers, friends and families, and even kids and dogs can hang out and enjoy a nice summer evening. While there's no food on the premises, you can BYOF (Bring Your Own Food. I just made that up.), have it delivered, and they have food trucks on occasion. I spoke to Leah (one of the owners) briefly and she seemed genuinely nice and looks like she absolutely loves what she does. In fact, the entire establishment has the feel of pride and of craftsmanship. Some breweries feel too....industrial and corporate. I didn't get that feeling at all at Apocalypse. From the outside this place has lots of great vibe! Looks like it would be so fun to play outside with your friends and bring a big group. On the other hand, the inside is very, very small! Why do I give this brewery a five star? The people are very passionate about their beer, took the time to talk with us and even bring us back to where the brewing happens. One of the owners really showed how passionate he was and was very inviting to us. They have lots of heavy ABV as well as a clear diverse menu of unique types of beers. Something for everyone! Apocalypse is the perfect spot to sip on something cold on a beautiful, warm day. The inside is really small, but they do have a large outdoor space with benches, games, and room for everyone's pups. Their selection is a bit smaller than others, but I did try a few that I could definitely come back for! The cream-ation and the watermelon crack (but who doesn't love that one?) Their pours do make up for it by giving you a tad more than others. Their parking is a bit tricky, and if you are parking on their property you will have to drive through their outdoor space, which could be tricky if there's a lot of people out there. It's also literally right off the highway, so it can also be hard getting in and out with so many cars flying by. Put this on your summer spot bucket list! I can definitely see this place being a fun hangout too at night. read more

You mean....I've never written a review for Apocalypse Brew Works?! Inconceivable! I have had the opportunity to visit many times over the years. They don't have my favorite beers, but I can always rely on finding something I like well enough to have a glass or two of. Their summer staple, the Watermelon Crack, in particular is one of my favorites! Crisp, clean, perfectly sweet. A great hot weather beer. Unless there is a special event there though, this doesn't feel like a come-sit-and-drink brewery. It is more of a stop-in-taste-buy-for-carry-out kind of place. There is a very small indoor area with a couple high-top tables to stand at. But other than that, it is all outdoor space. And not much of it is covered. They might have a small pop-up tent or two out in the lot, and some oversized pub games (giant Jenga, anyone), but it is a mostly open and non-shaded blacktop lot. If there happens to be a special event or festival of some kind, there will be more seating and entertainment. But I stand by my first assessment, that if you are visiting this place on a whim on any given day, if you find it in its natural state of operation, you are probably not going to stick around too long. I have also had the pleasure of touring the facility and learning some more about their brewing a couple of times. Once was with a Yelp event and once was while with a group on the Derby City Brew Tours. If you get a chance, have them show you around. It is worth your time. I don't come here terribly often, only when there is a festival or other event really. But the beer is tasty and chilly and they are certainly worth a look-see. read more

We turned into what looked like a fallout shelter.  One of the oldest breweries in Louisville, Apocalypse Brew Works had the chain link fences, warning tape and gravel lot covered with fire pits.  Craft beer lovers were everywhere keeping warm by the fires and enjoying the 3 barrel-aged beers on draught.  You could tell these were diehard fans.   Apocalypse has the equipment, so they've been designated the local keg cleaner for several small breweries in town who don't have their own machine yet.  It's obvious, this craft community helps each other out!  And Apocalypse is expanding production, adding a canning line in a few months to keep up with demand.  Cheers! read more

This place is a gem. Super small inside area with only a few tables a few seats and not much more standing room but that is what makes it special. It was dark outside but it did look like the whole lot outside was set up for some summer fun. Definitely a place you would want to be when the weather warmed up. We arrived right at closing time but the bartender(BILL i think) was polite enough to give us a few minutes to enjoy a few of there beers. We ended up leaving with a couple t-shirts, a hoodie and a few growlers. One beer that really stood out was a whiskey sour. Very unique. Definitely need to plan on being here when the weather is warm to set outside and enjoy some Apocalypse brew. read more

Apocalypse Brew Works is so chill -- you'll want to hang out here even if it's not the end of the world. This small brewery opened up right when the craft beer craze was starting. And despite so many other breweries opening around town, it still stands strong. For those who haven't heard about it: Apocalypse's schtick is to "drink beer 'til the end." Its end-of-the-world theme extends from the names of the beers (Cream-ation and Atomic Amber, to name a couple) to the "Fallout Shelter" taproom to the fact that this brewery uses solar-heated water, grain reuse, material recycling and found objects and equipment in the brewery. If the End of Days comes, at least Apocalypse will be able to construct a brewery from what's left and we can drink away the end times. It also has a great outdoor area. Apocalypse is in a small building among a larger plumbing company. It's surrounded by chain link fence, and inside this space, picnic tables are set up. It regularly lends the space out for events, like the music festival Poorcastle, and food trucks. It's also dog friendly! And while you're chilling outdoors, venture into the Fallout Shelter for a beer. My favorite is Fallout Dust, a brew that uses peppercorns for a slightly spicy finish. There are a lot of great breweries to go to in Louisville, but I have to say that Apocalypse is my favorite. It's unpretentious and all about good beer and great company. I ordered a custom growler for my sister and her boyfriend as a Christmas gift and decided to fill it with some local, Louisville beer. I went to Apocalypse to get it filled and was delightfully surprised to learn that it's only $10 to fill a growler! That just solidified my choice that Apocalypse is the best. Since all their seating is outdoors, it's a great place to go during COVID. Masks are required unless you're seated at your table and they only allow one person/pair of people inside the brewery to order at a time. They often have a food truck there and sometimes even live music! read more

I can't believe I have not reviewed this place yet. Tonight I wanted an ice cold beer so I opened my refrigerator and retrieved a Crowler of Atomic Amber. This is one of my favorite beers, I am always excited to have one there or anywhere that carries it. The establishment is awesome, they allow and encourage you to bring your dogs and enjoy the outdoors. They have music and different types of food trucks to satisfy your food cravings. Some of their popular beers are Atomic Amber and Watermelon Crack. They allow small samples so you can find the flavor you like. This place has people from all walks of life and makes everyone feel welcome. They have large outdoor Jenna and Connect 4 games for adults and kids if you bring them along. Since winter is coming they get crowded in the brewery area. They do have fire pits outside, my wife and myself live the winter and we don't mind having a beer in the snow. You can win free brewskies by answering random questions the DJ will throw atcha! Now that is my kind of jam. And you will meet folk ranging from 21 to 93... maybe even older. The name suggests that this nanobrewery doesn't expect to survive beyond this year, but I expect there's a market for more small breweries in this town. I also think Butchertown was ripe for this place. My two visits thus far have been on pleasant evenings when they had food trucks set up in the parking lot, but I expect their long-term plan is simply to offer patrons a chance to get a pint or two while they are filling their growlers for the weekend. Here are a few reasons why I think this business will survive into 2013: * First and foremost, it's alcohol. And the beers I've tried so far have been pretty good, although I'm hoping they get a little bolder in their offerings. * It's basically a warehouse in Butchertown, so rent can't be too high. Although if the wind blows the wrong direction, the stench might not help those aroma hops. * The owner/brewers have other jobs, so I don't think anyone is relying on this (yet) to feed the kids. * Each time I've come, it's been packed, I think mostly with homebrew aficionados. So, plenty of community support. People like to drink with friends. * Finally, the apocalypse ain't gonna happen this year, which opens the door for this business to grow. Of course, there is always the next nut job predicting the End of Days is around the corner, so they can market this way as long as they want. read more

Apocalypse Brew Works is really great! It's small, and it's super casual, which I love. I most enjoy visiting Apocalypse when the weather is nice, because I like sitting outside and drinking beer. Depending on weather they'll have picnic tables and umbrellas and/or tents set up outside, and they have some games, including giant Jenga. My favorite beer is the Watermelon Crack, but I also enjoy the 1912 Kentucky Common, and the ENIGMA Bourbon Barrel Sour. Plus, one of my favorite parts about Apocalypse is that they allow animals inside! I'm not a huge fan of the cats, but I love hanging out with the puppies! I am disabled and the owner went out of the way to make sure I could get around matter fact they went so far to ask me how they could make it better. This may be my favorite brewery in town. Everything I have tried has been excellent. Their beer is simply top-notch. You can beat the prices, and the vibe is extremely relaxed. The place itself is a relaxing, no-frills setup with picnic benches set up in the parking lot. Bring your own food, or enjoy the food trucks that stop by from time to time. Bring your dog. I've passed this place many times without stopping in. It just doesn't look appealing. But, it's on the Books and Brews list, and I had enough time for one beer before dinner. And the space is as unappealing as I had imagined. Industrial and small. It was cold out. Luckily, there were stool spots available inside. I had the barleywine, (I love that the local breweries (Falls City (prefered) and Butchertown both have it as well) are doing this style. I also tried the porter and the oatmeal stout. Sadly, none of these beers clicked for me. They all had a tinge of sourness to them. Might just be part of the brewers flavor profile. So, how does an unappealing space and beers that didn't cluck for me add up to four stars? The people! Both staff and some regulars were an absolute joy to be around and get to know. If eating didn't need to happen, I would have happily had another beer that didn't click to continue conversing with them. I'll be back for that reason. read more

I, honest to goodness, can not believe I have never reviewed Appocalypse! How did this happen? I love Appocalypse - it is my favorite. Not only because of the beer but also because of the owners. Namely Leah (hope I spelled that correctly!). She loves brewing beer and I swear I can taste the love when I drink it. Especially the hefeweizen. And the Smoked Porter. And the Fall Out Dust. Ok, the amber, Watermelon Crack, etc., etc. All of them! They have snack food you can purchase to go with your beer and they almost always have a food truck. It is right off the expressway in the edge of Butchertown/ Lower Frankfort Ave area. They love dogs and welcome you to bring your well behaved best friend. They even have dog bowls under the spigot. they have picnic tables outside and bar stools inside. They have one person restroom (so help keep it clean, K? Thx!). Also, they may have a band. This was one of the first breweries I stopped by when I was in Louisville for the majority of 2015. I had heard about "Fallout Dust" and being a fan of pepper and spice figured I should give it a try. They knocked it out of the park with FD. The peppercorn is there and burns but in a good way if you like spice. If you dont you might not love it as much as I do. Their location is pretty nice, more setup as an outdoor space, they have a huge outside patio area and a small tasting room. When the weather is perfect its great to sit outside but if its a little cold or wet out the tasting room will be packed. They brew some good stuff other than FD, but anytime I see the logo or hear about them that is the first thing I think about, also the awesome two brew house cats! Hiro and Saki! read more

We very randomly saw this place on the way to get some ramen. While we were eating, Chris asked if we should try Apocalypse out, so we walked over. It's a very small place and everyone seemed to be regular that knew each other. In many situations, this can be intimidating or make you feel like an outsider, but it didn't. Everyone was very nice, especially the bartender Jane, and one of the owners we met that I unfortunately didn't get the name of. Jane invited us to meet the brewery cats, whom are so sweet and soft. We only met the black and white one that night, but that was good enough for me. We had told Jane that we were in Louisville for an overnight stay. She asked what we were doing the next day and we had no real plans except maybe the Louisville Slugger Museum. She then told us of a cool place she knew of very close to the museum. We ended up not even going to Louisville Slugger, so we didn't go to her recommendation, but it was cool of her to give us such a hot tip. The brewery itself is cool. It kind of has a small fallout shelter feel and the beers all have apocalyptic names. I had the Atomic Amber which was really good and Chris had Tsar Bomba. Both beers were very good. We got there very close to closing and only got the one beer, but we were really happy to have randomly happened on the place. The next day, Chris decided he wanted to go back to get a cool t-shirt. When we went, Jane remembered us and said hi, then when she saw that I saw the black cat in the brewery that we hadn't met, let the cat outside so that we could pet him. We had to leave to go home so we didn't really stay, but Jane was just as awesome for the t-shirt transaction. If we ever make it to Louisville again, we definitely will be hitting up Apocalypse again. read more

My first taste of the dunkel made me tear up thinking of the amazing German beers of my past. So, crying always equals five stars. Everything else is just candy sprinkles. But oh the sprinkles! The cream-action would be the most amazing summer session beer and one taste made me think of kayaking with a cold one and basking in all that is good and holy in this world. The cherry stout would be the perfect accompaniment to a mild cigar and a cozy fire. The English Nut is so much better than a Newcastle. Jeebus. I'm dying here. Amazing. Flavors. This place definitely didn't wow me! But with a name like Apocalypse I had to give it a try! There's not much around the brewery but it was a quick jaunt from my Airbnb in Butchertown. The actual bar area is quite small, maybe seating for 10 tops! But they did offer a good variety of beer choices. I had the IPA they were offering at the time, but wish I would've tried the watermelon! The bartender seemed more interested in her conversation with the regulars than being bothered to pour me samples so I chose pretty quickly. Plus they aren't very eco friendly, giving you samples and full pours in plastic cups. If you're nearby, check it out for a decent pint. If not, you're not missing out on much. read more

I'm a sucker for a brewery that has resident cats, and this one has two! ; ) The outside space here is great, inside is very small, but we were here on a beautiful Spring day. Lots of picnic tables, giant jenga, and a food truck, we were all set. Sit by the fence and watch the many near-miss accidents of people coming off the highway, seriously, we gasped several times. Apocalypse, you minx you. The millennial in me likes that they're only open on the weekends, something about exclusivity and scarcity. You'll feel like you found the coolest, hippest hangout at Apocalypse at any given moment. Tucked away on the side of what appears to be a small warehouse, Apocalypse (I believe) began as an offshoot of a group of Louisville Brewers association, and now it's a force to watch. During their time in town, they've expanded to have picnic tables, food trucks, and umbrellas. Oh yes, they're dog friendly, too! I've enjoyed this beer from the tap, around town, and even bought kegs for an event. By far, their kegs were the least expensive, easy to transport and coordinate, and came with tap equipment. I served up their APA, and it was a fast hit with my group. Their staff, no surprise here, is fantastic at making suggestions; they genuinely want you to love their creation and expand your palate. On site, I've sipped on everything from Watermelon Crack to Fallout Dust to Baby Jesus IPA. Thankfully, you can find their beer on many taps around town, for your weekday enjoyment! I love taking friends here, because they serve up such a wide variety of rock solid beer. Indecisive on what to order? Just ask for a sample, and he staff will walk you through it!
